On his first walk, I ask from you, O Homa!  (soma in Rig Veda), who expels death, the best life of righteous, the splendid, the all-radiant with its own brilliancy.

On the second walk……….

On the third walk……………

On his fourth walk, I ask from you O Homa ! (Soma in Rig Veda), who expels death, that may stand forth at will, powerful and successful upon the earth, putting down troubles and annihilating the destructive powers.

On his fifth walk, I ask from you O Homa ! (Soma in Rig Veda), who expels death, that I may stand forth as victor and conqueror in battle  upon the earth, putting down troubles and annihilating the destructive powers.

On his sixth walk, I ask from you O Homa ! (Soma in Rig Veda), who expels death, that we may first become aware of a thief, murderer or wolf; may no one else become aware of everything first!

Homa (Soma rasa) gives strength and vigour to those who mounted on white horses, wish to run over a race course. Homa gives splendid sons and righteous progeny to those who have not borne children. Homa gives fame and learning to all those who are engaged in the study of books (Nasko)

DASA GRANTHI IN MAHARASHTRA

For Nasko, Martin Haug adds some interesting details. Nask in Zoroastrian writings means sacred books. Parsis believe that there were once 21 books. Book means scripture in many religions. In Sanskrit they use Grantha for religious books. In Maharashtra Dasa Granthi (Ten Books) means ‘one who knows the Dasa/ten Grantha/books by heart. It refers solely to the Vedic writings, for the ten Granthas are the Samhita, Pada, Brahmanam, Aranyaka and  the six Vedangas’.

Nusk/Nask are from Arabic, not Avestan

Homa/Soma grants a good and rich husband to those who have long been maidens, as soon as he (Soma), the wise is entered.

Homa/Soma deposed Keresani from his sovereignty, whose lust of power had so increased that he said “no athrawa’s (Atharvan in Rig Veda) repetition of the ‘apaam aiwishtish’ (approach of the waters) shall be tolerated in my empire, to make it prosper; and he would annihilate all that are prosperous, put down all that are prosperous by destroying them.

xxx

Who is KERESANI?

Martin Haugh adds a foot note: It is evident from the context, that Keresani is the name of some enemy of the Athrava (Atharvan is priest in the Rig Veda), and there can be little doubt that he is the Krishnau of Vedic books who appears as the guardian of the Soma in heaven (Aitareya Brahmana 3-20; he is represented as an archer (Rig Veda 9-77-2; 10-64-8; 4-27-3). He is identified with fire (Vajasaneyi Samhita 5-32, Shankayana Srauta |Sutras 6-12, Raghuvamsa 2-49). As personage Krishnau appears to represent lightning and perhaps a particular kind of it.

xxx

What is apaam aiwishtish?

Martin Haug explains it as: – These words are evidently a technical term for Atharvana Veda Samhita which commences with the Mantra ‘shanno devi abhishtaye apo bhavantu vitaye. Patanjali’s quotation in Mahabashya gives the initial words of the four Vedas in the introduction to his book, where the words: ‘shanno devi abhishtaye’ represents Atharva Veda.

Hail to you who are of absolute authority though my own strength, O Homa/Soma hail to You! You know many things rightly spoken. Hail to You! You ask for no saying but one rightly spoken.

Mazda brought to you star studded, spirit fashioned girdle (the belt of Orion) leading the Paurvas (Pazand) the good Mazdayasnian religion; then you are begirt with it (when growing on the summit of the mountains, to make lasting the words and long accents of the sacred text /mathra (Manthra in Sanskrit).

Xxxxx

What is Paurva?

Martin Haug explains it as Persin name of Pleiades, which is variously written paru, parvin, parvah, parviz; this Parviz is given as the third or fourth lunar mansions in the later work Bundahish corresponding to Hindu Nakshatra Krittika and Rohini; the fifth Nkashatra is Mrigashiras over which Soma is the presiding deity (Taittiriya Brahmanam 3,1,2,3. So ‘leading the Paurvas’ means constellation Orion is in advance of the Paurvas on the moon’s path; it means Soma/Homa plant is supposed to be specially under the sidereal influence of the constellation Orion.

What is Long Accent?

Martin Haug explains it as: the term ‘aiwidhati’ must be equivalent to Sanskrit Abidhana’ name, appellation, word’ and the reading ‘garu’ is Sanskrit Guru, a long vowel, a very noticeable feature of the Gathas.

Aiwidhati = Abidhana in Sanskrit

Garu = Guru in Sanskrit

CURSES

O Homa/ Soma! You are the lord of the house, lord of the clan, lord of the tribe, lord of the country, you successful physician. I further invoke you for strength and prosperity for my body, and for the attainment of much pleasure. Keep far from us the vexations of our enemies.

Divert the mind of our abuser! Whatsoever man in this house, in this clan, in this tribe, in this country, may injure (us), take strength from his feet! Darken his intellect! Disorder his mind!

May he be paralysed in the feet! may he be palsied in his hands! May he not see the earth with his eyes! May he not see the nature with his eyes! Who injures our mind or body.

Strike a deadly blow O Yellow Homa/Soma! At the yellow blackish serpent, emitting poison for destroying the bodyof the righteous man. Strike a deadly blow, O Yellow Homa! at the murderer who has wrought mischief, who angrily inflicts wounds for destroying the body of righteous man.

The curses continue…………….

My comments

The curses are similar to Rishi Vasistha’s curses in the Rig Veda and the Atharvana Veda.

We come across some astronomical data here about the stars in Orion constellation. Probably they obtained more Soma plant in that season.

Those stars are very prominent in the night sky and they are important for Hindus.

Mrigashirsha/ Deer Head-in The Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna says he is Margashirsha in the months. It is corrupted as Markazi in Tamil and Tamil girls observe Katyayani Vrata and sing Tiruppavai and Tiruvemavai in that month.

Krittika /Pleiades :– Lord Skanda/ Kartikeya was raised by six women/ stars in this constellation.

Rohini:–  Hindus did celebrate marriage on the day of Rohini star. It is in Varahamihira’s Brhat Samhita and Sangam Tamil literature Akananuru.

Warning

Avestan is an extinct language. Thanks to Rig Veda we are able to confirm many details in it. But one must be aware of the fact, like we depend mostly upon Sayana, who came many thousand years after the Rig Veda, French and German translators depended upon the Pahlavi language translation of Zend Avesta scriptures. So there are lot of latter day details.

It is a fact that the matter in the oldest part of Zend Avesta, is closer to Vedic Sanskrit. But comparing  the 20,000 mantras in the four Vedas with the oldest part of Zend Avesta, shows they Parsis much less matter. Like we lost most Vedas, Parsis also lost 20 books/Nusks/Nasks out of 21.

Soma is highly praised with miraculous powers. It corresponds with what we know from the Rig Veda, Atharvana Veda, Adi Shankara, Bhagavad Gita, Tamil poet Bharati and Tamil Inscriptions (One Tamil inscription says ‘Manosudhdha Somayaji’, Soma yaga performer, pure in mind or purified his mind by doing Soma yaga)

Now I find new meanings for Tamils celebrating their weddings on Rohini star day and Tamils observing Vrata (Vow, Fasting) in the month of Markazi (Margashirsha) and Krishna praising that month. Now we know Soma is under the influence of Rohini. Puranas explained it in another way. Moon/Soma favoured Rohini among his 27 wives/27 stars!

By comparing Avestan materials with Hindu scriptures we may get new information!
