In the previous three articles on Thailand, I pointed out the Hindu influence on Thai culture. Now I give some more information about the contact between India and Thailand
We know about the Thai Ramayana called Ramakien composed during 1781-1798.
Thai people were familiar with Hindu puranas too. The Siamese works called Naaraai – Sibpaan, deal with the ten incarnations of Vishnu.
A bronze statue of Ganesa is in the Bangkok Hindu temple. He is holding a manuscript in his hand which confirms Ganesa’s help to Veda Vyasa in writing Mahabharata.
Agastya cult is also very popular in Thailand. The legal system of Siam is based on the Manu smriti which is evident from a legal work Phra Dharmasastra.
The vocabulary of the Thai language contains a large number of pure Sanskrit words or derivatives from Sanskrit.
Vivaha , Velaa are some examples for pure Sanskrit words.
XXX
Following are some derivatives
Sanskrit – Thai
Grantha – khantha
Samgha – samkha
Candra – jhanthara
Sukhi bhavatu – sukhi hotu
