Not many people know that the earliest Tamil reference to Ujjain is in Tamil epic Silappadikaram that is 2000 year old . Later Saivite saint Appar sang about it in Thevaram that is 1400 year old. But Sanskrit references are 1000 older than Tamil references .

Not many people know that Ujjain is mentioned as Avantika in the Saptapuri Sloka/couplet. It is mentioned there that Avantika is one of the Seven holy cities which will help one to attain liberation from the birth and death cycle.
In the Seven Holy Cities sloka/couplet it is called Avantika, not Ujjain.
अयोध्या मथुरा माया काशी काञ्ची अवन्तिका । पुरी द्वारावती चैव सप्तैते मोक्षदायकाः Meaning: 1: Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya (Mayapuri or Haridwar), Kashi (Varanasi), Kanchi (Kanchipuram), Avantika (Ujjain) … 2: … and Dwaravati (Dwaraka); These seven cities are giver of Moksha (Liberation) (and are called Mokshapuri).

The temple has Five Stories and five Sabha Mantaps. The idol of Mahakaleshwar is known to be Dakshinamurthi, which means that it is facing the south. The idol of Omkareshwar Mahadev is consecrated in the sanctum above the Mahakal shrine. The images of Ganesh, Parvati and Karttikeya are installed in the west, north, and east of the sanctum sanctorum. To the south is the image of Nandi, the vehicle of Shiva. The idol of Nagchandreshwar on the third storey is open for darshan only on the day of Nag Panchami. The temple has five levels, one of which is underground.

Maa Harsiddhi temple is just a 2-minute walking distance from Baba Mahakal temple. Maa Harsiddhi is one of the most sacred Shaktipeeths in India.
The evening aarti is the best attraction at the temple, but there is not much space to accommodate the crowd. It’s better to enter the temple before the Aarti starts.
