Durga Temple at  Batu Cavea

Forty feet long Durga Statue

Batu Caves near Kuala Lumpur, Capital of Malaysia, is famous for its tallest Muruga statue in the world.

I and my wife visited the shrine on 13th March 2025 on our way back to London from Sydney, Australia.

Though the temple is up above the hill, the golden coloured statue at the foothill is the most attractive one.

One should climb 272 steep steps to have the darshan of Lord Skanda/ Kartikeya/ Murugan.

Following are some interesting titbits about the Caves.

The Hill itself 400 million old geological calcite formation.

There are 272 steep, colourful steps.

Up above the hill is the Murugan shrine. During Thaipusam festival there will be a huge crowd.

The golden coloured Murugan statue at the foothills is 140 feet tall. It is the tallest Skanda statue in the world.

At the foothills, there are several temples including Hanuman, Vishnu, Ganesh, Durga and Ayyappan temples.

On the way to the main shrine smaller shrines are located. No fee is collected to enter the temple.

In addition to the temples, there are paid shows such as Gitopadesam and Ramayana show.

There are beautiful peacock statues and a huge Garuda statue; there is also a huge Hanumans statue near the Anjaneya temple.

Durga temple at the foothills has a beautiful idol; and a devotee has made a forty feet long Durga figure inside the temple.

Malaysia being a Muslim country, it is difficult to find a pure vegetarian restaurant; but inside the temple complex the restaurants serve pure vegetarian food.

One can reach the Batu Caves within half hour from the capital city Kuala Lumpur. Good parking space is provided in the temple complex.

One remarkable thing about the place is the presence of a big number of aggressive monkeys and the pigeons like old Trafalgar Square of London.

I found 50 %  devotees and 50 % tourists, mostly foreigners and local Chinese. We finished the  Darshan of all the temples in three hours. People travelling to Malaysia, must visit this temple.

Extremists are demanding to cut down part of the mountain saying it creates traffic problems; but Hindus are resisting it.

I took lot of pictures there .
