A mother was talking to her son about the Sun. Her son became curious and wanted to look at the sun. Immediately she lighted a candle and took him outside to show the sun during broad day light. Even that little boy started laughing at his mother’s action. Neighbours watched this with great amusement. The boy asked her, “Mum! Why do you need a candle to show to show me the sun which is million times or billion times brighter than this candle?” (Children are very intelligent nowadays; they watch lot of good and bad things on TV. Actually she wanted to compare the brightness and explain.)

There is a beautiful ARTI mantra from the Upanishad which Hindu priests recite at the temples during Deepa Aradhana time (showing lamps to God as a finale) illustrating this Sun- Candle light scene!

Hindu priests recite this Mantra to God showing a little lamp or camphor to God who is billion and billions of time brighter than sun and beg to god not to laugh at him.

Na tatra suryo bhati na candra tarakam

nema vidyuto bhanti kutoyam agnihi

tameva bhantam anubhati sarvam

tasya bhasa sarvam idam vibhati

Meaning:-

There the sun does not shine, nor do the moon and the stars. These streaks of lightning do not shine there either, (so) what to speak of this fire? That, shining, makes all others shine. By virtue of its luminosity, all these (manifestations) are illuminated.

My friend Kalyana Kurukkal of Trichy, living in London, immediately remindedme of Adi Shankar’s Saundarya lahari sloka:-

Pradhipa-jvalabhir dhivasa-kara-neerajana-vidhih
Sudha-suthes chandropala-jala-lavair arghya-rachana;
Svakiyair ambhobhih salila-nidhi-sauhitya karanam
Tvadiyabhir vagbhis thava janani vacham stutir

Meaning:

Oh Goddess who is the source of all words,
This poem which is made of words,
That you only made,
Is like showing the camphor lamp to the Sun,
Is like offering as oblation to the moon,
The water got from the moon stone,
And is like offering water worship, to the sea.

What is the science in it?

Our ancestors knew that there are objects with the brightness of billions of suns, but god cannot be compared with even such objects. This is not clearly said in the above lines. But Manikkavasagar, Tirumular and several other  saints have said them in very clear words. Manikavasagar, a Tamil saint compares all the universes to dust particles we see in streaks of sunlight. We took all these scientific facts for granted because science is a pygmy before Hindu religion! Ramakrishna Paramahamsa warns youths with a scientific bent of mind : “Don’t waste your time in counting the number of leaves on a tree!” (search yourself and then the cause of the tree first).

Western writers misled the entire world by saying that this person discovered this or that; but if you look at the books written by Russians or Chinese they have given different names from their own countries. But the truth is all these ‘discoveries’ are known to Hindu children from their birth from time immemorial! I will give you just two examples:-

1.Our earth is round in shape: all the words for earth in ancient Sanskrit and Tamil literature (Andam, Mandalam etc) say the round earth surrounded by sea in thousands of lines. But westerners take credit for it.

2.Billion Suns: when the westerners were roaming the lands of Europe without clothes or half clad, Hindus were comparing God to million or billion suns. At that time they did not colonise Americas and Australia. They did not even know what is Sun? But Hindu children were praying to God with the brightness of 10 million suns= Surya koti Samparabha. Koti= ten million is one of the small numbers in our Brahmanas literature (1000BCE). At that time Greeks, Tamils, Chinese, Hebrew speakers did not even start writing! Viswa Rupa Darsan of Bhagavad Gita (11-12) explains it beautifully well: Divi Surya Sahasrasya Bhavet!

Since I have written over 2000 articles on these things, I don’t want to repeat them.
