I wrote about the miraculous properties of Ankola (azinjil tree) found in the Singaperumal Koil temple under the heading Adi Sankara, Andal and Alangium hexapetalum yesterday. There are more interesting titbits about Singaperumal Koil of Kancheepuram District. It is not far from Chennai.

Singaperumal koil deity Narasimhar is called Pataladri Narasimha meaning red hill Narasimha. It is a rock cut temple. Narasimha means Man-Lion- one of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu.

When you come around the temple, Hot Dosa is sold for ten rupees each. Other food items are also available. Inside the temple Lord Narasimha’s statue has the third eye. The priest will remove the covering and show it to all the devotees during arti. Normally Lord Siva is associated with the Third Eye. It is rare to see Third Eye in a Vaishnavite temple like Singaperumal Koil.

Another interesting aspect is the sun light falling on the deities during two months in a year.

There is a saint behind every temple!

It is said that there is a woman behind every man (man’s success). Whether it is true or not, there is a saint behind every temple (temple’s greatness). Probably this is what makes the temple great. In a lot of Tamil temples there are Siddhar Samadhis (greatmen’s grave). This adds power to the temple.

Most of the temples in Tamil Nadu are associated with a saint, seer or a rishi. Singaperumal Koil temple is associated with Rishi Jabali. We come across a Jabali in Ramayana. But it may be another Rishi with the same name. Even poet Valmiki’s name is in 2000 year old Sangam Tamil literature!

Paris Lovers Locks and Narasimha Locks

One more interesting tit bit is the locks with the deity Narasimhar in the front part of the temple. In Paris and other western cities, we see Lovers Locks. They put the locks in the bridges to show that the lover and loved would be locked together for ever. But here I was told that they place the locks in front of Narasimha to get their problems solved. Once the problem is solved the loch is removed, I heard.

Singaperumal Koil is one of the 108 sacred Vaishnavite Temples and the deity is sung by Peyalvar, one of the 12 famous Vaishnavite saints.
