SOMA MYSTERY IN IRAN; ZEND AVESTA GIVES WONDERFUL DETAILS -2

First part of this article was posted here yesterday.

Zend Avesta, Veda of the Parsis/Zoroastrians give more interesting details about the mysterious Soma plant.

Reverence to Homa (Soma in Rig Veda)! Good is Homa, well created is Homa, rightly created of a, good nature, healing, well shaped, well successful, golden coloured, with hanging tendrils ( Pahlavi translation has narmtak ‘with soft tendrils; but nam yaasush must be traced to the root nam, ‘to bend downwards. Compare Namaste= I bow to you; Namaskar= prostrating in Sanskrit) as the best for eating and the most lasting provision for the soul ( the term used is pathmainya = remaining on the way; hence provisions for a journey.

O Yellow Homa! I keep in  you by my word (your power of giving) knowledge, strength, victory, health, healing, advancement, growth vigour to the whole body, understanding of subjects of every kind.

I keep in you by my word that I might wander freely in the world, putting an end to troubles and annihilating the destructive powers (of the enemies of the good creation.

I keep in you by my word that I might put down the troubles caused by those  whose very nature is to give troubles, such as the demns and bad men, the sorcerers and  witches, the opressors, wizards and idol priests, the criminals with two legs, the apostates with two legs, the wolves with four legs, of the army wih a wide front shouting and flying (in the air)

During the happy reign of Yima (Yama in Rig Veda) there was neither cold nor heat, neither decay nor death, nor malice produced by the demons;father and son walked forth, each 15 years od in appearance.

Who was the second man who prepared you, Oh Homa/Soma? What blessing was bestowed upon him? What reward did he get?

Thereupon answered me Homa (soma in Sanskrit) , the righteous, who expels death; Athwya was the second man  who prepared me for the material world; this blessing was bestowed upon him, this reward he obtained, a son was born to him, THRAEOTANA (Fredun) of the hero tribe, who smote the serpent (Azhi /Ahi in Rig Veda) Dahaka (Daksha?) who had three mouths, three heads, six eyes, a thousand spies (Hazar/1000 in Pahlavi language), which was of enormous strength, a fiendish destroyer, an evil , a devastator of the Gaethas (settlements), a nuisance a destroyer of enormous strength,  and which Angro Mainyush produced in the material world for the destruction f the righteous.

Who was the third man who prepared you, Oh Homa/Soma? What blessing was bestowed upon him? What reward did he get?

Thereupon answered me Homa (soma in Sanskrit) , the righteous, who expels death; THRITA, the most useful of the family of the Samas was the third man who prepared me for the material world; this blessing was bestowed upon him, this reward he obtained, that two sons were born to him, Urvakshaya and Keresaspa; the one was a judge administering justice, the other a youthfuk hero, who wore sidelock and carried a club, who slew the serpent Srvara, which devoured horses and men, which was poisonous and yellow poison  flowed a hand’s breadth high; on which Karesaspa cooked a beverage in a cauldron at the mid day hour, and the serpent, scorched, hissed, sprang forth, away from the cauldron, and upset the boiling water; Keresaspa Naremanao fled aside freightened.

Who was the fourth man who prepared you, Oh Homa/Soma? What blessing was bestowed upon him? What reward did he get?

Thereupon answered me Homa (soma in Sanskrit) , the righteous, who expels death; POURUSHASPA was the third man who prepared me for the material world; this blessing was bestowed upon him, this reward he obtained, that you were born to him you Oh righteous Zarathushtra of the house of Pourushaspa (who is ) opposed to the demons and of the Ahura religion. Famous in Airyana Vajo Oh you Zarathushtra, first recited Ahura Vairya  four times, with pauses between the verses each successive time with a louder recitation (This practice of gradually raising the voice with each successive recitation, is also observed in the Hotri ritual of the Hindus).

You made all the demons hide beneath the earth, who formerly flew about the earth in human shape., Oh Zarathushtra!  Who were thw strongest, firmest, most active, swiftest and most triumphant of the creatures of the two spirits (Spento mainyush and Angro mainyush)

Thus spake Zarathushtra:

(Compare my articles in which I have given What Krishna says, what Adi Shankara says about Soma, What great poet Bharati says about Soma , What Tamil inscription says and what Vedas say about Soma; all in praise of Soma as life saving, invigorating, mind purifying; but white skinned gangs mislead the world by giving it opium colour)

(This may be compared to what Vedic poets say about Rakshas, Dasyus, Yatudhanas, Pisacha and some Dasas etc)

In Hindu Soma Yaga, there are eight mantras they recite before extracting juice from the Soma plant)

Xxxx

Note on second man Athwya

In the Vedas, the soma sacrifice for Raajyakaama and Pasukaama – for winning territories and wealth is called  Anthavasu
