Part 3

Once again Tiru Valluvar proves that he is an ardent Hindu in Chapter two called The blessing of Rain. No one except Hindus worship rain as God. Elango of Silappadikaram ,the most famous Tamil , also praised Rain in the invocation along with Sun and Moon. Hindus worshipping rain is seen in the Rig Veda, the oldest book in the world, in the form of Indra and Varuna. Above all, the Brahmins in every house and priest in every Hindu temple use water to propitiate God. In fact, Hindus need water from birth to death to follow the religious rituals. It is not so in other religions or cultures.

Valluvar and other Sangam Tamil poets never hesitated to use the Sanskrit word Amrit. That shows ancient Tamils were well versed in the story of Churning of the Milky Ocean by the Asuras and Devas.

Thus rain is known the true ambrosial food of all that lives.

As food itself, thirst-quenching draught supplies.

13.Should rains fail, famine would ramp and rage over the wide sea-girth earth- – ANM

**

13.If the rains fail, hunger will cause infinite misery to the world

Even though it is surrounded by the wide ocean —SMD

**

If clouds, that promised rain, deceive, and in the sky remain,
Famine, sore torment, stalks o’er earth’s vast ocean-girdled plain.
If the cloud, withholding rain, deceive (our hopes) hunger will long distress the sea-girt spacious world. (GUP)

13. Should rains fail, famine would ramp and rage over the wide sea-girth earth –EVS

13.Let clouds their visits stay, and dearth
Distresses all the sea-girt earth.        SB

Verse 13 Though oceanic waters surround it, the world will be deluged By hunger’s hardships if the billowing clouds betray us. (HA)

13.Should the clouds deceive this sea-girt world,

Hunger and thirst will ramp and rage – H A Popley – HAP

13. விண்இன்று பொய்ப்பின் விரிநீர் வியனுலகத்து
உள்நின்று உடற்றும் பசி

14.No more would the farmers till their fields, if the springs of the heavens should go dry– ANM

**

14. If there is diminution in the bounty of rain
the ploughman will be forced into idleness—SMD

**

If clouds their wealth of waters fail on earth to pour,
The ploughers plough with oxen’s sturdy team no more.
If the abundance of wealth imparting rain diminish, the labour of the plough must cease. (GUP)

14. No more would the farmers till their fields, if the springs of the heaven should go dry–EVS

14.Unless the fruitful shower descend,
The ploughman’s sacred toil must end.         SB

Verse 14 When clouds withhold their watery wealth, Farmers cease to pull their ploughs. (HA)

14. ஏரின் உழாஅர் உழவர் புயலென்னும்
வாரி வளங்குன்றிக் கால்

15.It is the rain that causes ruin and it is the rain again that restores the ruined to fortune. – ANM

**

15.Want of rain spells ruins; sufficiency of it , in turn,  will lead to renewed  prosperity. SMD

‘Tis rain works all: it ruin spreads, then timely aid supplies;
As, in the happy days before, it bids the ruined rise.
Rain by its absence ruins men; and by its existence restores them to fortune. (GUP)

15.The power of rain is such that it can sterilise a country into a desert by its failure  and on the other hand can fertilise a desert by its seasonal fall–EVS

15.Destruction it may sometimes pour,
But only rain can life restore.      SB

**

Verse 15 It is rain that ruins, and it is rain again That raises up those it has ruined. (HA)

15.’Tis lack of rain that ruins all;

And the rain’s help that lifts the ruined up —H A Popley – HAP

15. கெடுப்பதூஉங் கெட்டார்க்குச் சார்வாய்மற் றாங்கே
எடுப்பதூஉம் எல்லாம் மழை
