тАЬEurope first learned of the old Indian drama from Sir William Jones translation of KalidasaтАЩs Shakuntala, published in 1789. Something in the nature of a commotion was created among European intellectuals by the discovery and several editions of the book followed. Translations also appeared in German, French Danish and Italian. Goethe was powerfully impressed and he paid a magnificent tribute to Shakuntala.
The stream of Sanskrit drama continued to flow for centuries but after Murari , early in the ninth century, there is a marked decline in the quality. That decline, and a progressive decay, were visible in other forms of lifeтАЩs activities. It has been suggested that this decline may be partly due to the lack of royal patronage during the Indo -Afghan and Mogul periods and the Islamic disapproval of the drama as an art form, chiefly because of its intimate association with the national religion. But there is little substance in the argument though political changes at the top had some indirect effect. The decline was obvious long before the political changes.
Yet , in spite of all this, it is astonishing the Sanskrit drama continued to be produced right through the mediaeval period and up to recent times. In 1892 appeared a Sanskrit adaptation of ShakespeareтАЩs Midsummer NightтАЩs Dream. Manuscripts of old plays are continuously being discovered. A list of these prepared by Professor Sylvain Levi contained 377 plays by 189 authors. A more recent list contains 650 plays.

One of the oldest Tamil Temples, known as Highgate Hill Murugan Temple in London, celebrated its Fourth Maha Kumbabishekam- Consecration Ceremony today 30-4-2025. It was attended by 200 to 300 people this morning. Every 12 year a Hindu temple must have a renovation and consecration according to Hindu scriptures.
Murugan is the Tamil name of Lord Skanda/ Kartikeya.
Run by Sri Lankan Tamils with the support of all the Tamils from different countries, started Pujas in 1979 and celebrated first Kumbabishekam in 1986. Late Sri Sabapathi Pillai was the force behind the temple construction.
In addition to daily Pujas, the temple runs several classes to spread Saivism and regularly conduct Manikkavasagar Festival every December.
Queen Elizabeth
Queen Elizabeth visited only one Hindu temple and that was this Highgate Hill Murugan Temple.
Queen Elizabeth II visited the Highgatehill Murugan temple on the 6th of June 2002, in her first major engagement after the тАЬGolden JubileeтАЭ celebration. Highgatehill Murugan Temple is the first Hindu temple to be visited by the British monarch in the British history. Accompanied by Prince Philip, the Queen spent about 45 minutes at the temple and a тАЬSpecial Pooja of blessingsтАЭ was performed during the visit.
Another notable thing about the temple is Mr Nagarajan has been the manager of the temple for very long time. He is known to everyone.
Mayuram Priest
For this Kumbabishekaam, the temple has invited Sri A V Swaminatha Sivachariyar from Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu. He runs a successful Veda Patasala in Mayuram (Sivapuram Veda Patasala). He is expanding his Vedic Education. He was assisted by all the priests from different temples in London today. London has 28 Tamil Temples, both big and small. North Indians have more temples in London.
Late historian and famous archaeologist Dr R Nagaswamy has performed several Dance Dramas with the help of this temple тАУ all the dramas were about Tamil Saints and Hindu stories.
The temple is visited by hundreds of people during weekends.
At the end of three hour ceremony today, all were given pack lunch and water bottle. The temple committee has done fool proof arrangements to perform everything on time.
