படிக்கலாமா வேண்டாமா………
தயவுசெய்து கதைக்கு வாங்கோ வாங்கோன்னு அழைக்கிறேன்
என் குடும்ப நண்பர் ஒருவர் என்னையும் என மனைவியையும் சாப்பிட கூப்பிட்டிருந்தார் ரொம்ப ஜோக்காகவும்பாயிண்ட்ஆகவும்
பேசக்கூடியவர்

அவர் வீட்டிற்கு போனவுடன் காப்பி முறுக்கு கொடுத்து உபசாரம்
செய்துவிட்டு, சிரித்துக் கொண்டே சொன்னார். இன்றைக்கு
உங்களுக்காக ஸ்பெஷல், ராகு சாம்பார், கேது ரசம் என்றாரே
பார்க்கலாம்……..எனக்கும் என மனைவிக்கும் தூக்கி வாரிபோட்டது,
உடனே நானும் என் மனைவியும் எழுந்து விட்டோம்.

என்னடா இது சைனாக்காரன் மாதிரி……..எங்களுக்கு கொரோனா
வரவழைத்து திட்டமிட்டு கொலை முயற்சிசிக்கிறாரோ???

சரி இ.பி.கோ செக்‌ஷன் 345 படி இவர்மேல்கேஸ் திரு பராசரனிடம்
சொல்லி (இவர்தான ராமர் கோவிலுக்காக வாதாடி ஜெயித்து
கொடுத்தவர்)பு க் செய்ய வேண்டியது தான்……….
நானும் என் மனைவியும் நாங்கள் “ப்யூர் வெஜிடேரியன்கள்.
நாங்கள் அமெரிக்கா போன போதிலும், லண்டன் போன போதிலும்
வெஜ் நூடில்ஸ்ஸும் வெஜ் பரகரும் தான் சாப்பிட்டோம்”
(நாங்கள் அமெரிக்கா, லண்டன் போனதெல்லாம் எப்போ சொல்லி
பீத்திக்கறது????)
அவர் சிரித்துக். கொண்டேஉட்காரச் சொன்னார் இதுவும் வெஜிடேரியன்தான்
இந்த “உண்மைக் கதையை “கேளுங்கள்……

“உண்மை கதை “என்றவுடன் எனக்கு பழைய ஞாபகம் வந்தது.

சுமார் 60 வருடங்களுக்குமுன் “தினமணி கதிர்” – ஒரு வார இதழ்
பத்திரிக்கையில் புஷ்பா தங்கதுரை என்ற எழுத்தாளர் “உண்மை கதை” என்று பெண்களைப்பற்றி விதம் விதமாக கதை
எழுதுவார். திரு ஜெயராஜ் அவர்களும் அதற்குத் “தகுந்த மாதிரி”
விதம் விதமாக படம் போடுவார் !!!! ஆனால் அதே பத்திரிக்கை
முதல் பக்கத்தில் அடியில் இந்த இதழில் வரும் எல்லாம் “முழு கற்பனையே யாரையும் குறிப்பதல்ல” என்று இருக்கும்……
நாங்களும் காசு கொடுத்து வாங்கி அந்த “உண்மைக் கதைகளை”
படித்தோம்!!!!

சரி , இந்த உண்மைக கதைக்கு வருவோம்
நண்பர் பேச ஆரம்பித்தார். சுருக்கமாகச் சொல்லிவிடுகிறேன்
தேவர்களுக்கும் அசுரர்களுக்கும் ego clash……யார் பெரியவர்
என்று….அடிதடி சண்டை……ஆளும்கட்சி எதிர்கட்சி மாதிரி.
பொத் பொத் என்று நிறையப்பேர் செத்து விழுந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.
தேவர்கள் குரு “குருபகவானும்”, அசுரர் குரு சுக்கிர பகவானும்
பரமசிவனிடம் பஞ்சாயத்திற்குப் போனார்கள். அவர் பார்த்தார்
ஏற்கனவே ஒரு அசுரனுக்கு (பத்மாசரனுக்கு) வரம் கொடுத்து
நான் பட்ட பாடு …….அப்புறம் மகாவிஷ்ணு மோகினி அவதாரம்
எடுத்து நடிகை லட்சுமி மாதிரி டான்ஸ் ஆடி என்னைக் காப்பாற்றினார்.

“அப்பா, குருமார்களே!! இது “கிரிமினல் கேஸ்”
நான் சாதாரண சிவில்கேஸ் வக்கீல். இந்த மாதிரி கேஸ்களை
“டீல்”பண்ணக்கூடிய ஒரே கடவுள் மிஸடர் மகாவஷ்ணு தான்.
அவரிடம் போங்கள்” என்று “மலையேறி “விட்டார்

அப்புறம் நடந்தது தான் உங்களுக்குத்ந்தெரியுமே……மந்தார மலையை மத்தாகவும்,வாசுகியை பாம்பாகவும் பாற்கடலை கடைந்தனர்,

மகாலடசுமி முதல்ஆல கால விஷம் வரை வந்தன. தங்களுக்கள்ளாகவே
“டிஸ்ட்ரிப்யூட்” செய்து கொண்டனர் தேவர்கள்.
எதிர் கட்சிகள்,” நீங்கள் என்ன வேண்டுமானாலும் செய்து
கொள்ளுங்கள் எங்களிடம் t.v இருக்கிறது, பத்ரிகைகள்
உள்ளன,,,,,,நீங்கள்ஆட்சியைக் கலைத்தே ஆக வேண்டும்”
அதுதான் எங்களுக்கு அமிர்தம்” என்றன!

சரி கதைக்கு வருவோம்..

அமிர்தம் வந்தவுடன் டிஸ்ட்ரிப்யூஷனில் தகராறு…….
பார்த்தார் மகாவிஷ்ணு. இதை வேறு விதமாகத் தான்
“டீல்” செய்யவேண்டும், என எடுத்தார் மோகினி அவதாரம்.
அசுரர்களுக்கெல்லாம், சுரா பானம்( foreign சரக்கு)
வாங்கிக் கொடுத்து விட்டு, அமிர்தத்தைக் கரண்டியால்
கொடுக்க ஆரம்பித்தார்
சுவர் பானு என்ற அசுரன் மட்டும், சரக்கு சரியில்லை, சைடு
டிஷ் சரியில்லை என்று சாப்பிடாமல் இருந்தான். தேவர்கள்
ஒவ்வொருவராக அமிர்தத்தை வாங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கும்
போது சுவர்பானுவும் குறுக்கே நுழைந்து கையை நீட்டினான்.
சூரியனும் சந்திரனும் இதைப்பார்த்து “இதோ தாலிபான் பாக்கிஸ்தான் உளவாளி“ என்று சத்தம் போட மகாவிஷ்ணு தனது
சக்ராயுதத்தால் சுவர்பானுவை இரண்டு துண்டாக வெட்டினார்.
தலை ராகுவாகவும், உடல் கேதுவாகவும் மாறியது.

இருவரும் மகாவிஷ்ணு காலில் விழுந்து
மன்னிக்க வேண்டினார்கள். நீங்கள் அமிர்தத்தை தொட்டதினால்
உங்களுக்கு கிரக பதவி கொடுக்கிறேன். ஆனால் இனிமேல்
இப்படியெல்லாம் தப்பு பண்ணக்கூடாது என்று கரண்டியினால்
ராகு, கேது தலையில் தட்டினார். கடைசியாக அவர்கள்
வாயிலிருந்த விஷம் ராகுவின் வாயிலிருந்து வெங்காயமாகவும்,
கேதுவின் வாயிலிருந்து உள்ளிப்பூண்டாகவும் விழுந்தது,
South east asia வில்!!!!! (சந்தேகம் இருந்தால் google ல்
செர்ச் செய்து பார்த்துக் கொள்ளவும்)
ஆகையினால் தான் சொன்னேன், இன்று என் வீட்டில் “வெங்காய
சாம்பாரும், உள்ளிப்பூண்டு ரசமும்”!!!!! என்று சொல்லி சிரித்தார்.

நாங்களும் விழுந்து விழுந்து சிரித்து விட்டு பொரித்த அப்பளாம்
ஜவ்வரிசி பாயசத்துடன் சாப்பிட்டு முடித்தோம்! இனிதே முடிந்தது “உண்மைக கதையும்”விருந்தும்!!!!!
இப்பொது நான் சில சமயம் என் மனைவிடம் இன்று “ராகு பஜ்ஜி,
கேது சட்னி “ என்றே சொல்கிறேன் !!!!!
ரொம்ப ஆசாரமாக இருப்பவர்கள் ராகு கேதுவுக்கு பயந்து கொண்டு
இதை சாப்பிட மாட்டார்கள்!
ஆனால் நான் சாப்பிடுவேன் ஏனெனில் எனக்கு கடக ராகு மகர கேது…..ஒண்ணும் பண்ணாது……..இது வரை கடவுள் கிருபையினால் ஒன்றும் ஆகவில்லை!!!!
அடுத்த கட்டுரையில் ராகு கேது எப்படி இருந்தால் நலம் செய்வார் என்பதைப் பற்றியும் அவர் கூடச் சேர்ந்த குளிகன் கத்தரிக்காயையும் பற்றியும்
சொல்வேன்.

Ancient philosophy for modern times

We tend to think of philosophy as an academic discipline or intellectual exercise. But in

the ancient world, it was considered a guide to practical life. Stoicism is one of the ancient

Greek philosophies, very influential in its day. The ancient Greeks were interested in the

‘good life’ or happiness. They found its key in “virtue” or virtuous conduct, which is

reflected in a life devoted to “self-control, courage, justice, and wisdom”. They felt that

virtue alone was sufficient for happiness.

Stoicism is ultimately a manual on ‘how to live’-  system of ethics based on logic – “the

highest point to which man can attain by the mere use of his faculty of reason”,

as the modern philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer said. 
It holds that there are things which are beyond our control, and it is wisdom

to accept this. (Cosmic determinism.) Our freedom consists in ordering our life,

in the light of reason, subject to and in accordance with this imperative. 
This attitude focuses on the present, and avoids giving in to desire for pleasure, or fear

of pain. We have to use our mind to understand nature around us and conduct our life in

accordance with its plan. This necessarily involves living in harmony with others, based

on justice and fair play.

Formally, its origins have been traced to the  Greek philosopher Zeno  of Citium in the third

century BC. He taught in Athens.

It flourished in Greece and later in Rome till the third century AD. It declined later due to

the organised  onslaught of Christianity . Its great advocates and practitioners were

Epictetus, Seneca, Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Musonius Rufus, Posidonius, etc. Throughout

the ages, it has had many admirers and advocates among the great minds: Emerson, Walt

Whitman, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, Adam Smith,

Immanuel Kant, Matthew Arnold, etc. 

Stoic wisdom in daily doses

In this admirable book, Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman bring to us the wisdom of the

Stoics in the form of short quotes from the famous practitioners, one for a day. The book has

 a short but admirable introduction, giving the essence of the philosophy focused solely

on practice. 

The Stoic wisdom is organised under three disciplines of Perception, Action, and Will.

Under each is grouped important quotations on  themes for daily reflection and practice.

Short notes accompany each quotation that aid understanding . 

The Discipline of Perception relates to  the right understanding of the world- how we

perceive the world around us. This involves our mind and reason, as it is our mind which

interprets the world!

The Discipline of Action relates to how we act in the world, what decisions we take,

their motives and aim.

The Discipline of Will relates to developing true understanding of our place in the world,

learning to deal with things we cannot change.

 I did not give the date of loading or number for the article in the beginning. But all articles are available in both the blogs in the name of S Swaminathan.

Later I used ‘London Swaminathan’.

Like you did with S Nagarajan’s articles INDEX, get the articles by googling.

Following  is the method:-

THE DAILY STOIC

Busts of Greek philosophers.

Hindus are by nature philosophical and religious. Saints and singers, wandering minstrels,

men of God have over the centuries brought the wisdom of the ages to the doorsteps of the

common man. Even the unlettered peasant was familiar with the basic Hindu philosophical

ideas. Local proverbs in the myriad native tongues contain and convey wisdom that no

educated pundit or modern scholar can clothe in easy language.

Nearly two centuries of imitative westernised education, ill-conceived reform movements,

ill-tempered leftist propaganda and modern secular fashions have been attempting to change

this basic disposition. They even appear to have succeeded in their efforts to a large extent  

among the modern generation. But the older generation, and those with their family traditions

still in tact, even if distorted in form and diluted in content, are still holding on to their

heritage of religious sentiment and philosophical reflection.

Religion and philosophy

But what exactly do we mean by ‘philosophy’ and ‘religion’? We simply have in mind the

basic idea that there is a Power which runs the world, and we have to order our life in

accordance with it.  The belief is philosophy, its practice is religion. This is reflected as a

general attitude to life as a whole.The different religious sects merely represent various

interpretations of this position, giving rise to differing theologies. We may consign  

all academic controversies to the dung heap. But the practical discipline they enforce

is to a large extent uniform across sects! If we examine closely, practical religion is

contained in the Yama and Niyama prescribed under Yoga, whatever may be the sect

people follow. 

Popular religion encourages people to look upon a personal God as a present help in need,

and as remedy for all ills. People look up to God for fulfilment of desires. This attitude looks

upon God as dispenser of personal destinies. Theistic Hindu sects regard God as Mother,

Father, Child, Friend, Beloved, Master, etc  This attitude is effective, and this belief works-

as people experience in their day to day lives.

Scientific  attitude

Those who consider themselves  ‘philosophical’  and so above the common run may believe

in a Higher Power, but not necessarily that It takes an interest in or interferes with individual

situations. This is also the attitude of great scientists like Einstein who are not atheists or

agnostics, but do not think of God as a person. Einstein said:

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious……

It was the experience of mystery….that engendered religion.

A knowledge of the existence of something we cannot penetrate, our perceptions

of the profoundest reason and the most radiant beauty, which only in their most

primitive forms are accessible to our minds – it is this knowledge and this

emotion that constitute true religiosity; in this sense, and in this alone,

I am a deeply religious man.

My comprehension of God comes from the deeply felt conviction of a superior

 intelligence that reveals itself in the knowable world. In common terms one

can describe it as “pantheistic” (Spinoza)

I am not an atheist.

{ Pantheism here is the position where “God becomes the Absolute, and Nature and Self

are but his manifestations.This is pantheism, and the view-point of Spinoza-” John Dewey}

While arguments rage on either side, we can see that there is no contradiction in these a

ttitudes. Different attitudes suit different temperaments.  The basic question is how we

conduct our day to day life in the light of our religious or philosophical belief. Arguments

do not decide questions of life.

Variety, conflict , confusion

It is here that  we come across bewildering variety, conflicting advice and confusion. And not

unoften, solid hypocrisy. Often, belief and behaviour are seen in conflict. Religion is reduced

to ritualism, or magic tricks,while philosophical attitude degenerates into plain cynicism,

learned agnosticism, or  nihilism. 
While Hinduism is full of scriptures, it is difficult to point to one authoritative source of

practical conduct which is suitable for modern times. The Bhagavad Gita alone fills the

bill admirably,  but that too is subject to numerous interpretations.

THE DAILY STOIC

In such circumstances, I have found this book to be eminently practical and immensely

useful.
