துருக்கியில் ரிக்வேத கல்யாண காட்சி -புதிய கண்டுபிடிப்பு
துருக்கி நாட்டில் பொகாஸ்கோய் (Bogazkoy) என்னுமிடத்தில் கிமு.1380 கல்வெட்டில் ரிக் வேத தெய்வங்களின் பெயர்கள் பொறிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது எல்லோரும் அறிந்த செய்தி. விக்கிபீடியா முதலிய என்சைக்ளோபீடியாக்களில் நீண்ட காலமாக உள்ள செய்தி ; இதன் மூலம் சம்ஸ்கிருதம், உலகில் கல்வெட்டில் பொறிக்கப்பட்ட மிகப்ப ழைய மொழி என்ற பெருமை பெற்றது . ஏனெனில் அதே தெய்வங்களின் பெயர்களை இந்திரன், அக்கினி, நாஸத்யர் களை (அஸ்வினி தேவர்கள்) இன்றும் நாம் வணங்கி வருகிறோம். நம்முடைய பெயர்களில் மட்டுமின்றி எல்லா கோவில் மந்திரங்களிலும் அஸ்வினி, அஸ்வின், இந்திரன் முதலிய பெயர்கள் உள்ளன . இதைவிட பழைய பாபிலோனிய, சுமேரிய கல்வெட்டுகள் இருந்தும் அவைகள் மியூசிய தெய்வங்கள் தான் . அதுமட்டுமல்ல ரிக்வேதத்தில் அதிகம் துதிகளை உடைய இந்திரன் பெயர் காஷ்மீர் முதல் கண்டி (Kandy in Sri Lanka) வரை உள்ளது. தென்கிழக்காசிய நாடுகளில் இன்றும் இந்திரன் பெயர் உள்ளது. தமிழர்களிடையே இந்திரன் பெயரோ கொள்ளை மலிவு. ராஜேந்திரன், மகேந்திரன், கஜேந்திரன் உபேந்திரன் முதலிய பெயர்களை தினமும் கேட்கிறோம்.
ரிக் வேதத்தின் பத்தாவது மண்டலத்தில் 85-ஆவது துதி கல்யாண மந்திரம். இதை நாம் எல்லோரும் அடிக்கடி கேட்கிறோம். பிராமணர் வீட்டுக் கல்யாணங்களிலும் , பிரமணர்களைக் கொண்டு நடத்தப்படும் கல்யாணங்களிலும் , திரைப்படக் கல்யாணக் காட்சிகளிலும் நீங்களும் இதைக் கேட்டிருப்பீர்கள். இதில் இரண்டு அருமையான வரிகள் வருகின்றன.
“உன்னுடைய இதயமும் என்னுடைய இதயமும் ஒன்றாகட்டும்” என்று புதுமணத்தம்பதிகள் மந்திரம் சொல்கின்றனர். இதை இன்று உலகிலுள்ள எல்லா மதத்தினரும் இதயம் (Heart) படம் போட்டு வாழ்த்து அட்டைகளிலும் (Greeting Cards and Greeting Stamps) தபால்தலைகளிலும் பயன்படுத்துகிறோம். 47 மந்திரங்கள் அடங்கிய ரிக்வேத 10-85ம்- (RV 10-85 hymn) துதியில் இது ஒரு மந்திரம்.
கணவன் 11–ஆவது குழந்தை!!
மற்றொரு அற்புதமான வரி “மணப்பெண்ணே உனக்கு பத்துக் குழந்தைகள் பிறக்கவேண்டும். உன்னுடைய கணவனை 11ஆவது குழந்தையாக நடத்து”. இது மிகவும் உளவியல் ரீதியான (Psychological) அறிவிப்பு. கணவனும் மனைவியும் கொஞ்சிக் குலவுவர். ஆனால் குழந்தை பிறந்தவுடன் பெரும்பாலான அன்பும் கவனிப்பும் குழந்தை இடத்தில் போய்விடும்.அந்தக் குழந்தையை கணவனின் மறு அச்சாக (replica) அந்தப் பெண் பார்ப்பது இதற்கு காரணம். ஆகையால் பத்துக் குழந்தை பெற்றாலும் கணவனையும் கைவிடாமல் குழந்தையைக் கவனிப்பது போல கவனி என்று அற்புதமாக சொல்கின்றனர். இதை எல்லா கல்யாண விட்டு மந்திரங்களிலும் இன்றும் கேட்கலாம்.
திரைப்படக் காதல் பாட்டுகளுக்கு எல்லாம் மூலம் இந்த ரிக் வேத துதிதான். இதிலுள்ள 47 மந்திரங்களில் பல மந்திரங்களுக்கு இன்னும் அர்த்தமே தெரியவில்லை. வெளிநாட்டு மொழி பெயர்ப்பாளன் ஒவ்வொருவனும் ஒருமாதிரி உளறிவைத்துள்ளான் . ரால்ப் கிரிப்பித் (Ralph Griffith) மூன்று இடங்களில் அர்த்தம் புரியவில்லை என்று ஒப்புக்கொள்கிறார். இன்னும் ஓரிடத்தில் ‘ஒருவேளை’ (Probably) இப்படி இருக்கலாம் என்பார். மற்றவர்கள் வழக்கம்போல வாய்க்கு வந்தபடி உளறிக்கொட்டி கிளறி முடி இருக்கின்றனர் .
47 மந்திரங்களிலும் 25-க்கு மேலான வேதகால தெய்வங்கள் பெயர்கள் உள்ளன. கடைசி மந்திரத்தில் உள்ள தேஸ்த்ரி Destri என்பது ரிக்வேத சரஸ்வதியாக இருக்கலாம் என்பது ஸாயனர் கருத்து. வேறு இடங்களில் இந்த சொல் வரவே இல்லை. இன்னும் ஏராளமான புதிர்கள் உள்ளன. ஆனால் சொல்லவந்த விஷயம் புதிய கண்டுபிடிப்பு.
புதிய கண்டுபிடிப்பு
கல்யாண ஊர்வலம் என்பது இந்துக்களுக்கு மட்டுமே உள்ள சிறப்பு. இந்திய துணைக் கண்டத்திலுள்ள முஸ்லீம்கள் இதை ஓரளவு பின்பற்றுகின்றனர். கிரேக்கர் கல்யாணங்கள் முதலியனவும் ஆடல் பாடல்களுடன் நடக்கும். ஆயினும் மாப்பிள்ளை அழைப்பு (Jan vasam) ஊர்வலம், பின்னர் மணப்பெண்ணை மணமகனுடன் சேர்த்து ஊர்வலம் விடுவது, அதாவது கணவன் வீட்டுக்கு அனுப்புவது எல்லாம் மந்திரத்தில் உள்ள ஒரே மதம் இந்து மதம்தான்.
தங்க ரதத்தில் மாப்பிள்ளையும் பெண்ணும் ஊர்வலமாகப் போகும்போது “எல்லோரும் வந்து வாழ்த்துங்கள்” என்று ஒரு மந்திரம் அழைக்கிறது.
பிறகு ‘கையும் கையும்’ கலப்பதுதான் கல்யாணம் என்பதையும் ஒரு மந்திரம் சொல்கிறது. இதைக் ‘கைப்பிடித்தல்’ என்று ஆண்டாள் முதல் பலரும் பாடி இருக்கின்றனர் . பிராமண வீ ட்டு திருமணப் பத்திரிகைகளில் இதைப் ‘பாணி கிரஹணம்’ என்று சம்ஸ்கிருதத்தில் எழுதி இருப்பர். இதற்குப்பின்னர் கன்யா தானம் (பெண்ணை தானமாகக் கொடுக்கிறேன்) என்ற வரியும் இருக்கும்.

மற்றொரு மந்திரம் மணப்பெண்ணை சூர்யா என்ற பெண் பெயரால் அழைக்கும் . மணமகன் சந்திரன் (சோமன்).
ஏற்கனவே சோமன், கந்தர்வன் அக்கினி ஆகியோர் மணந்த மணமகளை இப்பொழுது ‘நாலாவதாக’ இந்த மணமக க்கு தருவதாக ஒரு மந்திரம் சொல்லும். இது தத்துவ பூர்வ விஷயம். இதைச் சொன்னவுடன் எந்த மாப்பிள்ளையும் கோபித்துக் கொண்டு மணமகளை ‘வேண்டாம் போ’ என்று சொன்னதாக வரலாறு இல்லை!!
இந்த கல்யாண ஊர்வலக் காட்சி அப்படியே பொகஸ்கோய் (Yazilikaya near Bogos Kaya) பக்கத்திலுள்ள பாறையில் செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது..
தென் இந்தியாவில் பெரிய கோவில்களில் ஆண்டு தோறும் இறைவன்- இறைவியின் கல்யாண உற்சவம் சிறப்பாக இன்றும் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. சுமேரியாவிலும் , மதுரை மீனாட்சி கோவில் போலவே திருமணம் நடந்தது பற்றி முன்னரே எழுதியுள்ளேன் அதே போன்ற காட்சி பொகஸ்கொய அருகில் யாஜிலிகாயாவில் (Yazilikaya) செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது இதில் ஒவ்வொரு கடவுளும் ஒரு வாகனத்தில் வரு வதை முன்னரே வாஹன ஆராய்சசிக் கட்டுரையில் தந்துள்ளேன்.
ஏனைய கடவுள் கல்யாணங்களை விட இதில் சிறப்பு என்னவென்றால் ரிக் வேத கல்யாண மந்திரத்துக்கும் இந்தக் காட்சிக்கும் உள்ள ஒப்பீடு ஆகும்
1.எந்தப் பெண் கல்யாணம் செய்துகொண்டாலும் இந்துக்கள் மந்திரத்தில் அந்தப் பெண்ணை சூர்யா (Miss Suuryaa) என்றுதான் அழைப்பர் . அதே போல துருக்கியிலும் சூர்யா (Suuryaa) என்ற பெண் கல்யாணக் காட்சியைக் காணலாம். இந்துக்களின் கதையின்படி சூர்ய தேவனின் மகள் சூர்யா .
2.இரண்டாவது ஒற்றுமை கல்யாண ஊர்வலம் ஆகும். சூர்யா ஊர்வலமும் மணமகன் ஊர்வலமும் எதிர் எதிர் திசையில் வந்து சந்திக்கிறது . இங்கு மண மகனின் பெயர் தேசுப் (Tesub) என்னும் பருவநிலைக் (weather god) கடவுள் ஆகும். அவர் ரிஷப வாஹனம் அருகில் நிற்க காட்சி தருகிறார். இது மதுரையில் மீனாட்சி திருக்கல்யாணத்துக்கு வரும் சிவனை நினைவு படுத்தும் . அதுமட்டுமல்ல அவர் பெயரிலும் சோமன் உண்டு. அவரை சோமசுந்தரர் என்றே அழைப்பர்.
3.துருக்கி பாறை சிற்பங்களில் அவர் அருகில் இரண்டு குட்டி தெய்வங்களும் இருக்கின்றன. இவர்களை ரிக் வேத கல்யாண மந்திரம் குறிப்பிடும் அஸ்வினி தேவர்களுக்கு ஒப்பிடலாம்
4.சூர்யா என்பவள் சிம்ம வாஹனத்தில் வருவதாக யாஜிலிகாய பாறைச் சிற்பம் காட்டுகிறது. இது சிவனின் மனைவி காளி, துர்க்கை என்னும் பல பெயர்களில் சிம்ம வாஹினியாக காட்சி தருவதற்கு இணையானது
(காய, கோய் என்ற சொல்லுக்கு பாறை என்று பொருள்).
5.ஐந்தாவது ஒற்றுமை ஒவ்வொருவரும் கை நீட்டி நிற்கின்றனர். கைக்குமேல் அவர்களுடைய பெயர்கள் பொறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இது ‘பாணி கிரகணத்தை’ — கைப்பிடித்தலை – குறிக்கிறது
6. சூர்யா என்னும் மணப்பெண் அருகில் 2 பெண்கள் , அவளுடைய மகன், ஒரு குரங்கு ஆகியன உள்ளன. ரிக் வேத கல்யாண மந்திரத்தில் இருபதுக்கும் மேலான பெயர்கள் வருவதால் நாம் எதையும் குறிப்பிடலாம்
7.கடவுளருக்குக் கீழே இருதலைப் பறவை (Double Headed Eagle) சித்தரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது ‘ஈருடல் ஓருயிர்’ என்பதைக் காட்டும் பறவை இது. இரண்டு தலைகள் இருக்கும் ஆயினும் உடம்பு ஒட்டி இருக்கும்
கி.மு 1400 முதல் மத்திய கிழக்குச் சிற்பங்களில் தோன்றும் இருதலைப்புள் (Double headed bird) விஜய நகர காசுகள் வரை பொறிக்கப்பட்டு இன்று பல நாட்டுக் கொடிகளிலும் காசு , ரூபாய் நோட்டுகளிலும் அச்சி டப்பட்டுள்ளது உடம்பு ஒரே இதய வடிவில் இருக்கும் அகநானுறு 12, கலித்தொகை 89, புறத் திரட்டு 785 முதலியவற்றில் இருதலைப் புள் பாடப்படுவதை முன்னரே ஆராய்ச்சிக் கட்டுரையில் கொடுத்துள்ளேன்.
8. மேலும் ஆண் தெய்வங்கள் இடது புறமும் பெண் தெய்வங்கள் வலது புறமும் நிற்கின்றன . இன்றும் கூட இந்து கல்யாணங்களில் ஆண்கள் ஒரு புறமும் பெண்கள் மற்றொரு புறமும் நிற்பர். கோவில்கள், பஜனைகளில் கூட
இப்படிப் பிரிவு (segregation) உண்டு. வெளிநாட்டில் இதைக் காணமுடியாது.
இதே போல வல , இட அமைப்பை முகூர்த்த நேரத்தில் காணலாம்.
இந்த துருக்கிய சிற்பங்கள் அனைத்தும் ஹிட்டைட் (Hittites) கலாசாரத்தின் தாக்கம் என்றும் அவர்கள் சம்ஸ்கிருதம் தொடர்பான (இந்தோ ஐரோப்பியன் மொழிக்குடும்பம்) மொழி பேசினர் என்றும் எல்லோரும் ஒப்புக்கொள்கின்றனர்.
எப்படி ஒரே சிவன் -பார்வதி, ஒரே விஷ்ணு -லெட்சுமி ஒவ்வொரு ஊர்க் கோவிலிலும் வெவ்வேறு பெயர்களுடன், வெவ்வேறு கதைகளுடன் காணப்படுகின்றனரோ அப்படி மத்திய கிழக்கிலும் 3000 தெய்வங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. ஆகையால் பெயர்களை மறந்து விட்டு கதையின் உயிரோட்டத்தை மட்டும் ‘சலித்து எடுக்க’ (filter) வேண்டும் ; அப்படிப் பார்க்கையில் யாஜிலிகாயா சூர்யா கல்யாணமும் பிராமண வீடுகளில் மணப்பெண்ணை சூர்யாவாக பாவித்து ரிக் வேத (10-85) மந்திரம் சொல்வதும் ஒன்றே.

Society as the basis of History
This is an obvious point which all the loony historians of the left and their comrades in the academy are trying to obscure. The doyen among modern historians, Arnold Toynbee held that world history consists of the history of “societies” and not nations, and he identified five living societies and two fossilised ones as constituting world history. Analysing the Western society, he pointed out how it extended backwards, almost indefinitely.
In tracing its history back to its origins, we strike upon the last phase of another society, the origins of which obviously lie much farther back in the past. The continuity of history, to use an accepted phrase, is not a continuity such as is exemplified in the life of a single individual. It is rather a continuity made up of the lives of successive generations, our Western Society being related to Hellenic Society in a manner comparable with the relationship of a child to its parent.
……….the intelligible unit of historical study is neither a nation state nor mankind as a whole but a certain grouping of humanity which we have called a society. We have discovered five such societies in existence today, together with sundry fossilised evidences of societies dead and gone.
Toynbee identified five such ‘living ‘ societies- which he said had been much the same as in 775 AD!.These are:
Western Christendom
Orthodox Christian Society of South-Eastern Europe and Russia
An Islamic Society covering North Africa and Middle East
A Hindu Society in the tropical subcontinent of India
A Far-Eastern Society
What exactly happens then in history? Says Toynbee:
The forces in action are not national but proceed from wider causes….Different parts are differently affected by an identical general cause….A society , we may say, is confronted in the course of its life by a succession of problems which each member has to solve for itself as best it may.The presentation of each problem is a challenge to undergo an ordeal,and through this series of ordeals the members of the society progressively differentiate themselves from one another.
So, history is basically how societies meet the challenges faced by them.
In the struggle for existence the West has driven its contemporaries to the wall and entangled them in the meshes of its economic and political ascendancy, but it has not yet disarmed them of their distinctive cultures. Hard pressed though they are, they can still call their souls their own.
(These extracts are taken from the Introduction to Vol.I of the two volume abridgement by D.C.Somervell ( Oxford University Press) of the original six volume edition of ‘A Study of History’. As this abridgement was carefully revised and approved by Toynbee himself, it is authoritative.)
This was written more than 80 years ago, in 1933! And how accurately has Toynbee identified the problem: the struggle for ascendancy and domination by the West! And in these eight decades, West has lost its direct political domination, but not its military and economic domination and control- it continues to exploit the rest of the world and its resources for its own advantage. And in these years, it is only Islam which has been able to challenge and slow down, though not entirely halt, the march of the West. Even communism has failed- at least so far.
Challenge to India
This has posed a serious challenge to India- not as a nation but in the sense of Toynbee, as the Hindu society. India won a famous victory against the British. And in spite of having agreed to Partition, India does not even call itself Hindu any more, and it faces both the Abrahamic outfits, which have not diluted their basic aim- which is conversion and conquest. It is fast
westernising itself, and in that sense seems to be losing its soul, contrary to what Toynbee said.
This is where India seems to be losing its sense of direction as well. Twenty five years before Toynbee, Mahatma Gandhi identified the problem facing India as due to modern civilisation, coming to us through England and hence identified as Western civilisation. He called his solution “Hind Swaraj”.
Alas, there is neither Hind nor Swaraj there to day! India is ‘secular’, not Hind. Most educated Hindus do not think of India as a civilisation. And Swaraj is replaced by formal submission to western domination through IMF, World Bank, and WTO! India today is not entirely free to order its own economic life.
May Gandhiji’s soul rest in peace!

1.Will Durant called his monumental 11 volume study of Western history as “The Story of Civilization”. But even he began with the history of the Orient. History is how civilisations have risen, survived and fallen or died. In this connection, two quotes from Durant are worth remembering.
Regarding the Mughal conquest of India, he says: The bitter lesson that may be drawn from this tragedy is that eternal vigilance is the price of civilization. A nation must love peace, but must keep its powder dry.
Regarding the Roman conquest of Greece, he says:
the essential cause of the Roman conquest of Greece was the disintegration of Greek civilization from within. No great nation is ever conquered until it has destroyed itself.
The history of a nation is thus the story of its civilisation. This is a theme made famous recently by Samuel Huntington through his book ‘The Clash of Civilizations’ as he views the current conflicts in the world as between different civilizations.
2. Many things happened in the past with which we may not agree today. Ancient Greece, famed for its democracy, functioned on the basis of slaves. The American Declaration of Independence boldly announced that “all men are created equal”, but many of the participants in the process did have slaves! They were victims of the times. It is not proper to judge them in the light of today’s ideas. We have arrived here, sitting on their very shoulders! We have prospered or progressed because we have learned from them! Secondly, we should not hate any one, on the basis of what happened in the past. We are all slaves of the ideas which rule us at a given time, and it won’t be proper to hate any one because they did things with which we disagree today!

லெபனானில் அந்த நாட்டின் ஜனாதிபதி மரொனைட் கிறிஸ்டியன் சர்ச்சில் (Maronite Christian Church) உறுப்பினராகத் தான் இருக்க வேண்டும். அந்த நாட்டின் பிரதம மந்திரி சன்னி பிரிவைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு முஸ்லீமாகத் தான் இருக்க வேண்டும். பாராளுமன்ற சபாநாயகரோ ஷியா முஸ்லீமாகத் தான் இருக்க வேண்டும்.
சுமார் 17 நாடுகளில் நாட்டின் உயர் அரசுப் பொறுப்பில் இருப்பவர்கள் ஒரு முஸ்லீமாகத் தான் இருக்க வேண்டும்.
ஜோர்டானை எடுத்துக் கொண்டால் உயர் பொறுப்பில் இருப்பவர் முஸ்லீம் பெற்றோருக்குப் பிறந்த ஒரு முஸ்லீமாகத் தான் இருக்க வேண்டும். டுனீஷியாவில் அந்த நாட்டில் பிறந்த எந்தவொரு முஸ்லீம் ஆண் மற்றும் பெண் ஓட்டர், ஜனாதிபதி வேட்பு மனுத் தாக்கச் செய்யத் தகுதி பெற்றவர்.
மலாசியா, பாகிஸ்தான், மௌரிடானியா (Mauritania) ஆகிய நாடுகளில் முஸ்லீம் குடி மக்கள் தான் அரசுப் பொறுப்பின் உயரிட இடத்திற்கு வர முடியும்.
அண்டோரா (Andorra) நாட்டில் ஒரு கிறிஸ்தவர் தான் உயர் அரசுப் பொறுப்பிற்கு வர முடியும்.
பூடான் மற்றும் தாய்லாந்து புத்த மதத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர் தான் அரசுப் பொறுப்பிற்கு வர வேண்டும் என்று கூறுகின்றன.
இந்தோனேஷியா பஞ்சசீலக் கொள்கையில் நம்பிக்கை உள்ள ஒருவர் தான் உயர் அரசுப் பொறுப்பிற்கு வர வேண்டும் என்று கூறுகிறது. அங்கு முஸ்லீம்கள் தான் மெஜாரிட்டியினர் என்பது குறிப்பிடத் தகுந்தது. “அனைத்துப் பண்பாடுகளின் சங்கமமாக” பஞ்சசீலம் திகழ்கிறது.
பர்மா (மயன்மார்) தனது ஜனாதிபதி எந்தவொரு மதத்தையும் சேர்ந்தவராக இருக்கக் கூடாது என்கிறது.
பொலிவியா, மெக்ஸிகோ, எல்சால்வடார் உள்ளிட்ட எட்டு நாடுகள் மத போதகர்கள் ஜனாதிபதி பதவிக்கு போட்டியிடக் கூடாது என்று கூறுகின்றன.
இன்னும் சுமார் 19 நாடுகள் அரசின் தலைமைப் பீடத்தில் உள்ளவர்கள் மதத்தைச் சார்ந்து இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று வலியுறுத்துகின்றன. இவற்றில் யுனைடெட் கிங்டம், ஆஸ்திரேலியா, கனடா, நியூஜிலாந்து உள்ளிட்ட 16 நாடுகள் காமன்வெல்த் உறுப்பினர்கள் – இவற்றிற்கு இரண்டாம் க்வீன் எலிஸபத் தான் – Defender of Faith என்றும் இவர் அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்-அரசின் தலைவர். இந்த வகையில் சேரும் மற்ற நாடுகள் – டென்மார்க், நார்வே மற்றும் ஸ்வீடன்.
உலகின் 85 சதவிகித நாடுகள் தங்கள் குடி மக்கள் எந்த மதத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவராக இருப்பினும் அரசின் தலைமைப் பொறுப்பிற்கு வரத் தகுதியுள்ளவர் தான் எனக் குறிப்பிடுகின்றன.
அமெரிக்காவில் எந்த ஒரு மதம் பற்றியும் குறிப்பு இல்லை. ஆனால் அங்குள்ள பல மாகாணங்கள் “நம்பிக்கை இல்லாதோர்” (non believers) (அதாவது நாத்திகர்கள் எனலாமா?) அதிகாரப் பதவியை வகிக்கத் தடை செய்கின்றன. ஆனால் அமெரிக்க சுப்ரீம் கோர்ட் கடவுள் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டவர் தான் அதிகாரப் பதவிக்கு வரவேண்டும் என்பதில்லை என்று கூறிவிட்டது.
பெரும்பாலும் அரசியல் சட்டங்கள் தாம் இவற்றைத் தெளிவாகக் கூறுகின்றன.
இந்தச் சூழ்நிலையில் இந்தியாவின் அரசியல் சட்டத்தை உலக நாடுகளின் அரசியல் சட்டங்களோடு ஒப்பீடு செய்யும் முயற்சியை புரபஸர் எஸ்.கே.சக்ரபர்த்தி மேற்கொண்டு பல சுவையான தகவல்களைத் தருகிறார்.

Evils of European colonialism
The rise of European Imperial power distorted things. It blinded the European colonial powers, who were also Christian, to the merits of the societies they chanced to rule. They did not seek to understand that those societies were different, but not inferior. Bigots like the Spanish and the Portuguese literally killed millions of people wherever they went and physically destroyed the old order, as in Latin America, in the name of their religion and God. The Muslims resisted them in Egypt and the Middle East. (But Muslims had destroyed the old culture and religion there.) The English destroyed the Native American civilisation and confined them to “reservations” like caged animals.
Subtle and sinister methods of the English
In India, the English followed a more subtle method, which is more destructive in the long run, while not appearing overly violent. They did not kill Hindus. But they destroyed the Hindu mind- its Independence and self-belief. They made Indians believe that they were not intelligent and that they were inferior. So their mission was to “civilise” us, which they considered ‘the white man’s burden’. This they attempted to do through the educational and administrative systems.
Muslims resisted the colonial power better
One stunning feature is to be noted here. The Europeans could not succeed in fully colonising the Muslims, even if they ruled them. Even where they introduced their system of education, Muslims did not give up their educational and cultural practices completely. But an English educated Hindu is almost always “modern”- i.e, he gives up his own language, literature, culture and starts imitating the Europeans fully! It is difficult to account for this phenomenon. We can witness this clearly in India. Young Hindus don western clothes and fashion. Young educated Hindu girls increasingly dress like Europeans or like Muslims (Salwar-kameez) while educated Muslims still dress like Muslims! The educated Hindu has become “secular” in the sense of diluting his religious adherence, he is diffident and defensive about it, but this has not happened with the Muslims. This is one of the problems which secular Western countries face from Muslim immigrants.
Colonial India
True Indian History- India is a civilization
But, with all this, Indian civilisation has somehow been continuous and living! This is what westerners and their Indian followers do not realise. When they talk of Indian history, they talk of the Mohammedan period and the English rule. But this is so idiotic. Mohammedans invaded and ruled over parts of India, not over all the Hindus. Englishmen ruled over Hindus, Indians (including converted Muslims who were originally Hindus). The Muslims could not convert all Hindus, despite trying force for more than thousand years, nor could the British rule beyond two hundred years- hundred years under the company, and 90 years under the Crown. So, the real history of India is not how Hindus were ruled by Muslims and the British for some time, but how Hindus faced Muslims and the English and finally overthrew them! If there is any problem, it is now, after Independence! Our threat today comes from the two proselytising Abrahamic religions (which enjoy guaranteed privileges as minorities) and the general Westernisation of our life and thought. But our religious civilisation is still largely intact, though increasingly confined to the seniors! Converted Christians of India are more devout than the western Christians. This is because of the Hindu blood running in them. We may hope that one day, it will triumph, for blood is thicker than watery western dogma or theology!
