Annual Ratha Yatra (Chariot Festival of Iskcon) was held on 17th July 2016 in Central London. Like previous years, thousands of people gathered in Central London. Three Chariots started from Hyde Park and finished in Trafalgar Square. Through out the route thousands and thousands had the darshan of the three chariots. Tourists were amazed to see such a thing in central London. They took lot of pictures and selfies with the chariots, devotees and onlookers.

Hare Krishna devotes prostrated before the Rathas on the roads. Food was distributed to thousands of people at the finishing place. Throughout the route Bhagavad Gita and other books were distributed for a token donation. Devotees from other European cities also took part in it. Senior White and Black devotees were sitting on the Ratha at the foot of Jagannatha, Balabhadra and Subhadra.

Dancing and singing added colour to the Rath Yatra. Several Bhajan groups were singing the name of Lord Krishna and Lord Rama. Even white women came in sarees. It was a colourful show. Children also joined their parents by walk and riding on their shoulders. I saw a few pregnant devotees and women with children in Prams.

Though twenty other Tamil Temples also conduct Chariot Festivals every summer, they use the local routes around their temples. Hare Krishna people are the only devotees allowed in Central London. Their discipline is well known. Very few police were visible. Crowd control and traffic control were done efficiently by the volunteers. It was an enjoyable day for the devotees and the tourists.

Though I have posted lot of pictures on face book, I have selected some good pictures and post here.

Hindus in London enjoy the four months from June to September. It is not because of summer alone, but because of lot of Hindu festivals organised during that period. From Hare Krishna Rath yatra in June to Janmashtami in September, there are lot of Rath  Yatras (Chariot Festivals) and big festivals. Lot of singers, dancers and speakers come to London and remind the Hindus of their hoary tradition and culture. It gives the Hindus plenty of opportunities to wear their traditional dresses and celebrate it as they celebrate in India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

There are over 25 Hindus temples run by Tamils in London. More temples are there run by Swaminarayan followers. There are other Hindu temples run by speakers of Hindi and Punjabi.

Hare Krishna temple in Watford (Greater London) celebrate Janmashtami when 10,000 Hindus visit the temple. I have already posted the Chariot Festival by ISKCON which was attended by thousands of Hindus in central London. Ram Navami procession in Southall is famous as well. Deepavali procession in Wembley (Brent) attracts a big crowd. Floats and decorated chariots come in the popular procession. Since Diwali falls in winter months, lot of celebrations happen inside the halls. British Prime Minister gives a party. Every Deepavali, Hindu Forum of Britain arranges a meeting inside the Parliament building in London. Ministers and MPs belonging to different parties participate in it with great enthusiasm. The Annakut festival arranged at the famous marble temple of Swami Narayan in Neasden, London attract a huge crowd. In the past few years more Swaminarayan temples have come up in Stanmore, Kingsbury and other places.

Apart from London, Balaji temple in Birmingham, Hindu temples in Leicester, Coventry, Manchester and New Castle upon Tyne have their own annual events. Swamijis (Hindu ascetics) belonging to various Gujarati sects visit London to give discourses. Sri Vallabh Trust also has a branch.

Scores of Sathya Sai Bhajan centres are there in every Petah (Council) of greater London. There are at least two Shirdi Sai Temples in Wembley and East Ham.

Mahalakshmi Temple in East Ham has bought a land and building a big new temple in East ham nearby its present location.

Saivaite Hindus have formed an organisation of their own temples and conduct annual festival in London. Scholars from India and Sri Lanka address the Hindus.

Since I have attended almost all the above events, I have the personal experience which is unforgettable. Foreigners also throng these places and taste our food. Every time a Hindu procession or event organised I see thousands of cameras flashing. Curious onlookers ask about the significance of the chariots and our customs.

Missions like Ramakrishna Mutt, Chinmaya Mission, Divine Life Society, Isha Foundation, Art of Living Foundation and hundreds of Yoga Teaching Centres, St James Sanskrit School are doing remarkable work.

Since Chinmaya Mission activities are in English with Sanskrit background, lot of youngsters attend their activities. Moreover they are not sect based and so all sections of Hindus attend their events. Swamijis of Chinmaya Mission visit London at least twice a year to give a spiritual feast. At least thousand people listen to them every day.

Swami Narayan temple in Neasden is a big tourist attraction. Since they have huge parking facilities and a restaurant attached to the temple, School children with White and Afro Caribbean backgrounds visit the temple almost every day during school term time.

Durga Puja is organised by the Bengali Hindus on a grand scale and Ganesh Chaturthi is organised by the Maharshtrians every year. They get special permission to do the immersion ceremony of the idols in Thames River outside the city.

Though one cannot have the same atmosphere of Mahakumbha Mela of Prayag or Janmashtami of Brindhavan or Rath Yatra of Puri or my home town Madurai Meenakshi Temple Chitra Festival, in London, at least we are reminded of our past golden days back home.

(NB. My list above is not comprehensive. I might have left some of the important events or the places.)

All the pictures are taken by me.

Wonderful Chariot Festival in London

Hare Krishna movement (Iskcon) is organising Rath Yatra like Puri Jagannatha Ratha Yatra (chariot festival) in  big cities around the word. I have attended one such event 25 years ago in London. Today I went again to participate in the Chariot festival held in London. It was a marvellous event attended by thousands and thousands of people. There was a big difference between today’s Ratha Yatra and the one that happened 25 year ago.

Then there were not many people as devotees. Now it has grown and I could see followers themselves in thousands. And then there were people like me who support all Hindu causes in London.

Though Tamil Temples in London also condcut chariot festivals, nothing is comparable with Hare Krishna Ratha Yatra. The reason being this is done in the heart of London. Other festivals are not allowed to do it in the city centre.

Now to what happened today:

Thousands of people had stood in the Queue for free food and enjoyed the Prasad. When I go to teach at the University of London (SOAS), I used to watch students queuing up for Hare Krishna free food at lunch time. It was done once a week during term time. Students from all ethnic backgrounds stand there to get the food. But at today’s Central London chariot festival, tourists from 200 different countries also stood in the Q and enjoyed the food! A lot of Hindus and Hare Krishna devotees did a very good service. Food was served continuously from 12 noon to 5 pm.

Once I was invited to Buckingham Palace for lunch with the queen. Every year this garden party is organised by the palace and 1000 people are invited. Only thousand people will be invited. Though we had twenty different ice creams 20 types of drinks, 20 different cakes and twenty different main dishes, they fed only 1000 people. But ISKCON feeds thousands and thousands at their annual Rath Yatra. I haven’t seen anything like this in London.

The whole atmosphere was surcharged with devotion. Tufted “white Brahmins” (foreign devotees) danced in the streets. One furlong long procession took half hour to cross each point. Several chanting groups attracted a big crowd around them. Since it covered important tourist spots of London such as Hyde Park, Piccadilly Circus, main Shopping Streets and Trafalgar Square, thousands of tourists watched it with wonder. Amazed by the sight, millions of cameras clicked for good pictures. Young children dressed as Krishna and Radha attracted more photographers. Each one vied others to take photos with them. Even the watching tourists repeated the holy chant Hare Krishna, Hare Rama.

Apart from blaring music, free food, lot of Bhagavad Gita copies were distributed. They never sell the books in public events but accept donations. One conspicuous thing is the absence of police. Normally I see police vans in the front and in the back of other processions. Here everything was done by the dedicated volunteers.

Though I don’t see eye to eye with their teachings their adherence to self-discipline of not using liquor, cigarettes, non- vegetarian food is appreciated by all the Hindus. In spite of these strict conditions they are able to attract more foreigners to the movement. They shave their head like Hindu priests and wear saffron clothes. Other family people in the movement wear just special tilaks.

Every Hindu must participate in such events to draw inspiration. It spreads positive vibrations. Most of the foreigners took their leaflets politely. Only few said no.  in India such events are common and it is easy to feel the atmosphere. But in Western Countries it is not that easy. I enjoy such events celebrated in the heart of London. I will wait for June 2016 Rath Yatra.
