நோற்றுச் சுவர்க்கம் புகுகின்ற அம்மனாய்!
மாற்றமும் தாராரோ வாசல் திறவாதார்?
நாற்றத் துழாய் முடி நாராயணன்
நம்மால் போற்றப் பறை தரும் புண்ணியனால்
பண்டொரு நாள் கூற்றத்தின் வாய்வீழ்ந்த கும்ப கரணனும்
தோற்றம் உனக்கே பெருந் துயில்தான் தந்தானோ?
ஆற்ற அனந்தல் உடையாய்! அருங்கலமே!
தேற்றமாய் வந்து திறவேலார் எம் பாவாய். (10)

483. The girls come to wake up their friends. They say, “You want to find happiness doing your nombu but you don’t open the door and don’t answer us. The virtuous Nārāyaṇan, adorned with a thulasi garland, will give us the Paṛai. Does Kumbakarṇan who fell into the mouth of Yama in battle make you sleep so soundly? You are very lazy! You are a precious ornament! Wake up and open the door. Let us go and worship our Pāvai.”
Oh lady fine, who has entered the heaven, Due to penance done in last birth, Won’t you reply, please Won’t you open the door, please If we pray the God Narayana, Having with him the scented garland, Made of holy basil, He would give us gifts, many, He is the same who is holy in times ancient, Sent Kumbhakarna to his death, After beating him in the field of war. Did that ogre give you his sleep, Before he went off from here, Oh lass who is very lazy, Oh lass, who is like pretty jewels, Wake up from your sleep, well, And open the door. And worship the Goddess Pavai.

Has that demon lost in contest peak

484. The girls come to wake up their friends. They say, “You are as beautiful as a golden vine, the daughter of the faultless cowherds, owners of many cows, who fight their enemies bravely and destroy their valor. You are as beautiful as a forest peacock, get up. Your friends in the neighborhood have come and stand in your front yard and praise the fame of the dark cloud-colored Kaṇṇan but you have not stirred from your bed. O dear girl, you have not said a word. Why are you sleeping like this? Let us go and worship our Pāvai.”
Oh daughter of the cattle baron, Who milks herds of cows, And wages war on enemies And makes his enemies loose their strength, Oh Golden tendril, Oh lass who has the mount of venus, Like the hood of the snake, Wake up and come, When your flock of friends, Have come to your courtyard, And sing of Krishna, Who has the colour of the cloud, Oh rich, rich lady, How can you neither move nor talk, And lie in deep trance, And not worship our Goddess pavai.
Thou, the daughter of cowherd, who
Sans a single guilt , milks many a milk-cow
Daunts arrogance, pre empt stuns at its precincts;
Thy girdle seems a serpent in a pit;
Wild jungle peacock start!
All neighbour mates have arrived now
Entered thy courtyard in grace
And sing the name of the cloud coloured yet
Creeper gold! Unperturbed and mute
Drowsest thou; what for, our pet?
Beloved bride, listen and consider, our damsel- 12

485. The girls come to wake up their friends. They say, “You come from a rich family. The buffaloes that just gave birth drip milk from their udders lovingly, thinking of their calves, and the front yard of the house is wet with their milk. We sing praising the names of the sweet god who angrily destroyed the king of southern Lanka but you haven’t opened your mouth. Wake up. Why do you sleep like this? Don’t you know all the people in your house are up? Let us go and worship our Pāvai.”
Hey, sister of the rich one, who owned, The mooing she buffalo with a calf, Which took pity on the calf, And gave out plenty, Of milk to it through its udder, And made his courtyard slushy with milk, We are assembled in thine yard, In the dripping fog, And sing about Him, Who killed in anger the king of Southern Lanka And who is very dear one, But open your mouth, you don’t. At least wake up now, Why this very deep slumber, For people of all houses around, Have already become alert And are ready to worship our Goddess Pavai…
Young buffalo yearns for calf, mumbles:
Milk dribbles from udder and home a mire wet;
Thou, sister of a fair and wealthy, with a snow hail
Over the head as we clench thy entrance
We pray Him the Delight of our mind,
He by His wrath had let
The monarch of Lanka South trounced.
Shalt arise now the very least
What a grand sleep you acquiesce
Residents all aware and muse,
Open thy mouth! listen and consider, our damsel.

Item 429
Context: Two Chozha kings were feuding. The poet sang this to Chozhan Nedunkilli who was not politically astute, when Chozhan Nalankilli besieged Āvūr and Chozhan Nedunkilli was hiding inside his palace
Do or Die; Kshatriya Dharma
Two Choza kings were fighting with one another, and the poet Kovur Kizar asked the hiding Nedunkilli Choza to come out and fight or accept defeat. This reminds us of Bhagavad Gita where Krishna points out to Arjuna to get up and fight. That is the Kshatriya Dharma.
“Do not yield to this degrading impotence, O son of Pṛthā! It does not become you. Give up such petty weakness of heart and arise, O chastiser of the enemy!”

War time woes
We see a lot of bad things happening in the Middle East where common folk suffer more than fighters. This is what happened in ancient Tamil Nadu as well. Chera, Choza, Pandyas fought with one another.People suffered a lot, says the poet.
Women and children were suffering. Even animals could not enjoy normal life.
In the Ukraine- Russia War and the Middle East war thousands of cats and dogs were abandoned or killed. Public had to live in shelters fearing bomb explosions every hour.
Now we know that it has been going on for over 2000 years. History repeats itself.
Even in the Dharma Yuddha during the epic period, we hear how moral codes were violated. At the end of Mahabharata war, Pandavas lost all their children and grand children when three of the Kaurava survivors set fire to the Pandava army tents. Only one in the womb of a pregnant Pandava woman survived to continue the Kuru Vamsa.
பால் இல் குழவி அலறவும் – and babies without milk crying, மகளிர் – women, பூ இல் – without flowers, வறுந்தலை முடிப்பவும் – and tying hair without oil, நீர் இல் வினை புனை நல் இல் இனைகூஉக் கேட்பவும் – and hearing the sad sounds of women in finely made houses without water

Courage of the Poets
Nowadays even journalists are afraid to write what is right and what is wrong. Unlike Lord Krishna, Kovur Kizar was just a poet. But in those days poets and saints acted without any fear or favour. They were not selfish like modern day journalists.

(War time woes)
The male elephants cannot go to the huge reservoirs to bathe with their females, nor have they been fed mashed rice mixed with ghee, and so they lean on their strong posts with perfect bases, bending them, distressed, their trunks rolling on the ground as they sigh with hot breaths and trumpet like thunder.
Babies scream without milk, women tie their bare hair without flowers and wailing sounds are heard from fine, well-constructed houses that have no water. It is cruel for you to linger here,

(Kshatriya Dhama- Do or Die)
O Greatness with powerful horses whose strengths are hard to measure! If you are righteous, open the gates and tell him that it is his. If you live by martial laws, open and fight!
If you are without righteousness or martial courage and just hide on one side within your high walls, your door with sturdy headers closed, it is cause for shame!

Fearless poet Kovur Kizar points out that both kings belonged to the same Choza Vamsa/lineage. It is like two brothers fighting. This shows the condition of ancient Tamil Nadu where brotherly fighting continued for over 1500 years. In other parts of the world such a thing happened only for a few hundred years.

You are not wearing garland made with white fronds of palm trees, or a garland from a neem tree with black branches. You are wearing a garland dense with āthi flowers, and the one fighting with you also wears a garland dense with āthi flowers.

You are the heir of him who removed not just the anguish of a dove, but also wiped away many other sorrows. They descend from men who shared with others and ate, who, fearing the poverty of wise men, gave cool shade to them.
These children with parched heads who cried looking at the elephant have forgotten to cry now, and eye the new crowds with bewildered looks. They have this new distress. You have heard what I had to say! Do what you may!

Saved another poet
Here is an interesting anecdote to show the power and influence of ancient Tamil poets. Kovur Kizar saved one poet who was dubbed as a spy of enemy king.
A poet named Ilanthathan came from Chozhan Nalankilli who was besieging Uraiyur. Chozhan Nedunkilli thought he was a spy and was going to kill him. Poet Kovūr Kizhār sang this and saved him

Item 435 Poet’s Life
To save a comrade, Kovur Kizar says what his comrades do. Here we see a beautiful description of the life and role of a Tamil Poet. They were honest, kind and selfless people.
Here is what he says about a poet,
“being happy for what is given to them, eating without saving and giving to others without holding back, is the sad life of those in need. Is this life harmful to others?”

Another interesting thing is the name of the poet
Poikai means a tank , a water source.
Of the 12 Alvars, Tamil Viaishnavite poets, early three were called Muthal Muuvar – First Three. One of them is Poikai Alvar. So that Alvar musrt have lived nearer to Sangam period. The reason for my guess is that we rarely find this name.

Another interesting thing is the word Iraivan
The poet called his patron king Iraivan, which means God. Nowadays this is used for Gods only.
In the ancient Tamil world , words like Kovil, Iraivan were used for King, his palace etc., because Hindus considered king as God.அவன் எம் இறைவன்
Puranānūru 48, Poet Poykaiyār sang for Cheraman Kōkōthai Mārpan,
Thondi with groves has honey fragrance from the garlands worn by Kōthai, those worn by his wives, and the waterlilies blooming in the vast backwaters.
That is my town. He is my king. Think of me, O man of ancient wisdom who seeks patrons. If you go to him, tell him “I saw the man who sang your praises when you were victorious in battle”.

Puram verse 49 is skipped; nothing interesting is found.
Puram verse 50 by Mosikeeranar has an interesting anecdote.
(When poet Mōsi Keeranār climbed unknowingly on the bed of the royal drum, he woke up only to find the king fanning him. This king is the son of the Chera king Selvakkadunkō Valiyāthan for whom Kapilar wrote Pathitruppathu 61-70 and Puranānūru 8 and 14. Pathitruppathu poems 71-80 were written by the poet Arisil Kizhār for this king. Thakadur is modern Dharmapuri, and that is where the king defeated Athiyan Ezhini (Athiyamān Nedumān Anji). Mōsi Keeranār wrote Puranānūru 50, 154, 155, 156 and 186)
A poet by name Mosikeeran was very tired when he arrived at the king’s palace. There was the palace drum decorated with flowers and fine cloths; the poet mistaking it for a bed climbed it and lied on the drum. The king came to know that someone showed disrespect to his royal symbol. When he approached the place, he was informed that person was a tired poet sleeping there. Without becoming angry and without disturbing the poet’s sleep, he fanned him with the royal fan.
In Tamil Nadu Royal Drum, Royal Tree, Royal emblems and Royal Umbrella were respected as King himself. Anyone showing disrespect to it, will lose his life. Here we see a quite opposite action.
This will remind anyone of another incident. King Raja Raja Choza lived 1000 years ago. He built the famous Thanjavur Big Shiva Temple. While the construction was going on Rajaraja came to supervise the work. The sculptors always chew the betel leaves and supari (betel nuts) and spit the waste out. To save the sanctity of the place an attendant used to hold a cup or bowl to get the spit. When the king came, the attendant of the chief sculptor was absent for some minutes. When the sculptor wanted to spit the betel waste King Rajaraja himself held the bowl and received it. Sculptors never remove their eyes from the stone they are sculpting; so he did not even see the king. Only when hus attendant came back the chief sculptor knew it was the mighty Choza king who served as his servant for some time. He profusely apologised but the king felt very happy to see the astute care the sculptor was showing in his work.

The poet finds a reason for the king’s action. Since the king was a Tamil scholar he gave that much respect to the poet. Such is the value of Tamil language.

Poet Mosi Keeranar adds one more point.
Is it because you knew that in the upper world there is room only for those who lived in this earth with soaring fame?
Hindus believe that those who meritorious things on earth only will get a place in the heaven.

1 Before it was brought back from washing, the fierce, dark wood drum, tightly tied with long leather straps, that hungers for blood, decorated with dense, long feathers with bright spots belonging to peacocks, sapphire strands, and flowers of ulignai vines that have gold colored tender leaves, I climbed on its delicate flower bed, as soft as the foam on oil, in ignorance. You did not chop me into pieces in anger,

because of your great knowledge of fine Thamizh. Not satisfied with that, you came close to me and fanned me with your strong arms that are like drums, to keep me cool.

480. The girls come to wake up their friends . They say,
“O crazy one, don’t you hear the sound of the sparrows flocking together
and calling “keech, keech” everywhere?
The cowherd women with fragrant hair and many ornaments
are churning the yogurt. Don’t you hear their sound?
You are a queen of the cowherd village.
How can you sleep when you hear people
singing the praise of Kesavan?
You shine brightly! Open the door.
Let us go and worship our Pāvai.”

Did you not hear, Oh slow witted girl, The twittering sound of black birds of the morn, Which sounds like a talk between them, Did you not hear the tingling sound, When the big and small coin like pendants, Rub against each other, Did you not hear the sound of vigouros pull, Of the curd churner being pulled, By the flower bedecked cow herdesses, Did you not hear the sound of twirling curd, When churned using the mixer, Oh, leader among girls, How can you sleep, When they sing the names sweetly. Of Narayana[16] and Kesava[17], Oh, She who is sparkling, Be pleased to open the door, And worship our goddess Pavai.

கீழ்வானம் வெள்ளென்று, எருமை சிறுவீடு
மேய்வான் பரந்தன காண்; மிக்குள்ள பிள்ளைகளும்
போவான் போகின்றாரைப் போகாமல் காத்து

கோது கலம் உடைய பாவாய் ! எழுந்திராய்; பாடிப் பறைகொண்டு

481. The girls come to wake up their friend. They say,
“The east is growing bright
and the buffaloes leave their small sheds and go to graze.
Women are about to do their nombu,
but we have stopped them so they will wait for you
and we have come to wake you up.
Get up, cheerful one!
If we sing his praise wishing to get the Paṛai
and worship the god of gods who split open the mouth
of the Asuran Kesi when he came as a horse
and fought with the wrestlers and defeated them,
he will give us his grace.
That would be a wonderful thing.
Let us go and worship our Pāvai.”

The eastern sky has become white, The buffalos are free to walk and graze, The remaining lasses, have stopped from going, All those who wanted to go, And have come to call you, Oh girl filled with happiness, Please wake up. Let us all sing and get gifts, From Him who has killed the horse like ogre[18], By pulling apart his mouth, From Him who killed the wrestlers [19], Sent to kill him, From the Narayana, who is first among the Gods, And prostrate before him.. Please hear what we tell. And decide for yourself, And worship our Goddess Pavai

Before gives milk plods to graze the field, Lo!

482. The girls come to wake up their friends. They say,
“O my uncle’s daughter, it is morning
and still you are sleeping on your bed in your room
where the fragrance of incense spreads everywhere
and the lamps on all sides of the palace
studded with pure jewels shine.
Open your beautiful door.
O aunts, won’t you wake her up?
Doesn’t your daughter speak? Doesn’t she hear?
Has some magic put her into deep sleep?
Let us praise the god singing his many names,
saying ‘You are the Māyan, Madhavan, Vaikuṇṭan!’
Let us go and worship our Pāvai.”

Oh my uncle’s daughter, who sleeps, In the soft cotton bed, In the pearl filled Villa, Well lit from all sides, And full of the smoke of incense, Please open the ornamental door. Oh aunt, why don’t you wake her up, Is your daughter dumb or deaf, Or down right lazy, Or she is in trance of deep pleasurable sleep, Let us all call him the great enchanter, Madhavan[20] and he who lives in Vaikunta[21], By several of His names, And get benefited, And worship the Goddess Pavai.

What is the distance between you and the God?

Narada is a great sage. He is devoted to Lord Narayana who is the protector of Universe according to the Hindu religion.
All the scriptures says that Narayana resides at Vaikunda, a sacred place in the sky.
Once Narada went to Vaikunda, where Narayana is supposed to be dwells.
But to his surprise Narada did not see the Lord, there!
He started searching the Lord.
At that time one devotee came in front of him.
He asked Narada, “oh! Great sage, wherefrom you are coming?”
Narada replied to him that he is coming from Vaikunda. He also said that he did not see the Lord at Vaikunda and in search of him he is wandering:’
The devotee laughed at him.
“Oh! Great sage! You do not know where he is. He is at a calling distance,” said the devotee.
Narada was wonderstruck.
He told the devotee that he is not able to understand the meaning of his words.
The devotee said, “It is simple. He is at a distance to hear your call. When the elephant Gajendra called “Oh, the Origin of everything”, he heard that call and immediately came to the elephant’s rescue.
Actually, the elephant’s leg was grabbed by a crocodile in a river and at any moment it may be dragged into the river.
Similarly, the Pandavas Queen Draupadi called him, “Oh, my lord who is dwelling in my heart. Pl come and rescue me. The wretched Gaurav Dussasana is stripping my sari.”
On hearing Draupadi’s call he came immediately to her rescue and started supplying numerous saris.
Telling all these things the devotee asked Narada, “I hope now you understand where he would be. Go and find him in devotees’ assembly.
Narada accordingly found the Lord in a large gathering where devotees were chanting His name.
Narada finding the Lord there prostrated before Him.
Narada told the Lord that he is coming from Vaikund in search of him.
The Lord laughed at him and said the famous reply.
“I am not residing at Vaikunda nor at the yogi’s heart. Wherever my devotees are chanting my name, oh, Narada, you may find me there.
Narada understood the power of the devotion.
God is in your heart and that is the distance between you and the God!

Kumaresa Satakam is an 18th-century Tamil literary work consisting of 100 poems (stanzas) praising Lord Muruga (Kumaresan), often attributed to the poet Gurupatha Dasar. Avatars
Avataara means a descent. The incarnation of a deity, especially of Vishnu. The origin of avatara is in the Rig Veda. Three steps of Vishnu, Varaha Avatara in the story of Emusha are in the Vedas. Flood story of Matsya Avatara is in all cultures around the world.
Boar incarnation is in Taitriya Samhita and Satapata Brahmana of Yajur Veda.
Kurma/ Tortoise Avatara is in Satapatha Brahmana as Prajapati assuming a form of Tortoise.
Matsya/Fish Incarnation
Fish Avatara is also in the same Brahmana book in the story of deluge. Manu found a small fish which grew to a large size which he left in the ocean. It directed him to construct a ship, Manu fastened the vessel to the horn of the huge fish. All boarded the ship and the fish/ Matsya Avatar saved them. Mahabharata repeated the story with some variations.
Kurma/Tortoise Avatara and the Churning of the Milky Ocean
The germ of this Avatara is Satapata Brahmana book. Later additions in the Puranas show Vishnu assuming the tortoise form. In the Satya Yuga, he placed himself at the bottom of the ocean of milk and made his back the base or pivot of the Mandara Mountain. The gods and demons twisted the great serpent Vasuki round the mountain and dividing into two parties, each took an end of the snake as a rope and thus churned the ocean until they recovered the desired objects.

Dhanvantari- Father of Medicine holding the cup of Amrita;
Lakshmi- Goddess of Fortune and Walth;
Suraa- Goddess of Wine;
Chandra- the Moon;
Rambha- Apsaras beauty;
Uchchaisrvas- Divine Horse;
Kaustuba- a celebrated jewel;
Parijata- paarijaata- a Celestial Tree;
Surabhi- Divine cow of Plenty;
Airavata- Elephant;
Sankha/ Conch- Conch of Victory;
Dhanus- a famous bow;
Visha/Poison.
Lord Siva devoured the poison to save Devas and demons, but his wife Parvati prevented it going down his gullet. When it was stopped at his neck/throat, that became blue in colour. So Siva was called Neelakanta (Blue throated). This name is in the Vedas and 2300 year old Sangam Tamil literature.
All these avataras were sung by Tamil saints. And many of them are in Tamil Sangam books. That shows all the Hindus from Himalayas to Kanyakumari were very familiar with Hindu Puranas.

Narasimha – man lion –avatara is more popular than Varaha avatara. in Tamil he is known as Singa Perumal.
The story of this incarnation of Vishnu is as follows:
Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakasipu were two demon brothers, hostile to Vishnu. Hiranyaksha was killed by Varaha avatar. Hiranyakasipu, then became the king of the demons and vowed eternal war with Vishu. His young son, Prahlada, was however became a devotee of Vishnu. Hiranyakasipu tried all means to change his mind, but in vain. Exasperated with this he asked the young boy, if his god Vishnu was all pervasive, could be found in the pillar in front of him; and then hacked it with his sword. The pillar cleft in twine and oust burst from it to the astonishment of Hiranyakasipu, the angry god in the shape of a Man-Lion. He tore to pieces the impious demon king. He was called Ugra Narasimha.
His anger subsided after Prahlada’s prayer; then he became Lakshmi Narasimha.
Yoga Narasimha is another form in which the god is seen squatting in a meditative mood. Simhachalam, Ahobilam , Namakkal, Narasimham near Madurai, Singa Perumal kovil are some of the places sacred to Narasimha. The usual Vaishnava symbols Sankha and Chakra are seen in his upper arms. The monolithic Ugra Narasimha found in the ruins of Vijayanagara was established by Krishna Deva Raya in 1528 CE. Statues of Narasimha are found on mountain tops, caves and deep forests. He has four hands.

VAMANA / TRIVIKRAMA AVATAR
Vamana, the dwarf incarnation of Vishnu, is worshipped as Trivikrama – in Tamil Ulgalantha Perumal. Trivikrama means ‘god who took three strides’. Tamil name means ‘the lord who measured the universe’ (with three strides).
The story is a powerful demon king named Bali, the great grandson of Hiranyakasipu conquered the three worlds and ruled them, in spite of his birth, in charity and with justice. Indra, the chief of devas, was thus superseded. Devas got alarmed and requested Vishnu to restore Indra to his legitimate position.
Vishnu could not go to war against Bali, as he was a virtuous king. So, he went in the guise of a dwarf Brahmana, as a Brahmachari, Vedic student. He begged of Bali for three feet of land on which he could sit and meditate on God undisturbed. The generous Bali granted the request. Then the dwarf grows to a height transcending the world, take in at one step the whole earth, covering the sky with the next, and demanding of Bali to show him room for the third. True to his promise, Bali offered his own head, on which the placed his foot and sent him down to lower regions. Because he was just, he was allowed to return to his kingdom every year. That day is celebrated even today.
At Tirukkovilur in Tamil Nadu is a celebrated shrine of Trivikrama. Another one is in the Ulagalanda Perumal temple at Kanchi. Mahabalipuram has one figure with eight hands. Brahma is also shown touching the finger of the god.
In the Ramaswami temple in Kumbakonam is a sculptured pillar on which the story of Vamana avatar is well represented.
Representations of Vamana figures with water pot and an umbrella are found in the demarcation stones of fields granted in charity.
A festival in honour of Bali is observed by the people of Mysore on the first day after Deepavali Amavasya.
In Kerala, people connect Bali with their harvest festival, the Onam, in which they worship a clay figure of this high-minded emperor. It is supposed that the king is permitted by Vishnu to visit every year the fair earth over which he ruled once and to satisfy himself that the people are quite happy and glad as in his time.

KALKI AVATAR
Kalki avatar is only a prospective incarnation in which the god is expected to appear as a powerful hero riding on a white horse- back, a sword in hand, to suppress the growing wickedness of the Mlechchas (anti Hindu elements).

BUDDHA
The Buddha avatar is a later addition by Jayadeva of Orissa and so Hindus don’t worship him. No deity of Buddha is found in any old Hindu temple.
Apart from these avataras , lord Vishnu is depicted in various forms in ancient Hindu temples.

RAMA and KRISHNA
Most popular avataras Rama and Krishna are worshipped throughout India. All their leelas or their victories over demons are shown in paintings and sculptures. Since all these are in epics and Puranas, most of the people know the stories behind them.
In Sangam Tamil literature even the Yamnua River and Gopikas episode is sung by a poet. Untold stories of Rama are found in Sangam Tamil books.
Over 20 Avataras are mentioned in the Puranas. But only ten are called Dasaavataaraas (Dasa= Ten)

PARASURAMA
Three Ramas were sung by the saints: Dasaratha Rama, husband of Sita; Balaraman- brother of Krishna and Parasuraman- Rama with axe on his shoulder. He was born as the son of Jamadagni in Treta Yuga. He fought with arrogant Kshatriyas and finished their domination. But he bowed to Rama, a Kshatriya, and gave all his strength to him.

When they say Music is a universal language, they mean it can communicate with all the human beings irrespective of the languages they speak. But Hindus go one step further and say that it communicates with plants and animals as well. We see it in Kalidasa’s Shakuntala, Divya Prabandham and Periya Puranam.
Periyalvar sang about the effect of music on humans, animals and plants. One of the 63 Nayanmars (naayanmaar) Aanaya Nayanar also showed us the effect of his music on the living beings. Both Lord Krishna and Aanaya Nayanar ( aanaaya naayanaar) played on their flutes and did this remarkable feat.
Periyalvar (periyaalvaar) while describing the effect of Krishna’s flute music he exclaims, I have found a wonderful thing. Listen to me!

275. O beautiful girls who live in this Jambhudvipa,
listen to a wonderful thing!
When Thirumaal who has a white valampuri conch in his hand
plays the flute with his divine lips,
the cowherd girls who have young breasts
hear the sound of the flute, get excited
shiver and run away from their houses
where they are guarded,
untying the ropes that they are tied with.
Putting the ropes on their necks as if they are garlands,
they come, shyly and surround him.

276. When Govindan takes his flute in his hands,
bends his eyebrows, blows the air bending his stomach and plays,
the young girls who are beautiful as peacocks
and have doe-like eyes, listen.
Their hair decorated with flowers becomes loose,
their dresses become loose.
Holding their falling dresses
they stand looking at him out of corners of their eyes.

Effect on Heavenly Apsaras Women
277. He is the prince of the sky.
He is the little one of Vaikuṇṭam. He is Vasudeva.
He is the king of Madhura.
He is the princely son of Nandagopan.
He, Govindan, is the little child of the cowherds.
When he plays his flute the young Apsarases
come down from the sky and approach him.
Their hearts melt and their flower-like eyes shed tears.
Their hair swarming with bees becomes loose.
Their foreheads sweat
and they close their ears to everything else
and hear only the music of his flute.

Effect on Ramba, Urvasi, Menaka, Tilottama
278. He fought, conquered and destroyed
the evil Asuras Dhenuhan, Pilamban and Kaliyan.
When that small dark child plays his flute
wandering about in the forests,
Menaka, Thilothama, Ramba,
Urvasi and other heavenly Apsarases,
fascinated as they hear his music, become speechless.
They come down from the sky, dance, and sing with joy.

Effect on Singers in the Sky
279. The kings of the three worlds are afraid of the god.
He came in the form of a man-lion and killed Hiraṇyan.
When Madhusudanan plays the flute,
Narada who plays the veena,
those who play the Kinnaram,
the Midunam and other string instruments,
hear his music, forget their skills and say,
“We won’t touch our musical instruments
because we can’t compete
with the lovely music of Madhusudanan.”

Effect on Gandharvas 280. He is the small son of Devaki,
who has large beautiful eyes and strong arms.
He is our highest god and a lion among the gods.
When he plays his flute,
the Gandharvas who wander in the sky,
fascinated by the nectar-like music,
say, “He, our highest god, is playing the flute,”
and they feel ashamed because they can’t play like him,
and they stand folding their hands and worshipping him.

281. Listen to the wonders that I have seen on this earth.
When the god who sleeps on Adishesha plays his flute
in the middle of a crowd of young cowherds,
the music is heard in the gods’ world
and all the sky dwellers forget to eat their sacrificial food
and enter the cowherd village.
Their ears are filled with the sweetness of the music
and they follow happily wherever Govindan goes
and do not leave him at all.

Effect on Birds and Cattle
282. When Govindan plays the flute
holding it in his small fingers, his beautiful eyes close,
his red cheeks puff out
and his brow sweats with small drops of water.
The flocks of birds leave their nests,
come and surround him.
The herds of cattle leave the forest
where they graze, come near Govindan,
and lie down holding their legs apart.
They bend their heads, listening to the music of the flute
and move their ears as if they are dancing.

Effect on Herd of Deer
283. His body is dark like a cluster of clouds,
his face is beautiful like a red lotus,
and his dark curly hair is the colour of the bees.
When he plays his flute,
a herd of deer, fascinated with his music, forgets to graze.
The grass that they have eaten
hangs from their mouths
and, unmoving from side to side,
they stand motionless as if they were painted pictures.

Effect on Trees and Plants
284. Our god, the matchless one,
the chief of the cowherds
decorated with dark-eyed peacock feathers
and a silk garment tied tightly and beautifully
on his handsome body plays the flute.
The trees stand without moving,
flowers pour honey-like rain
as if to bow and worship him.
Their straight branches bend to hear the music.
They all turn towards wherever the beautiful god Thirumaal is
because that is their nature.

285. Vishṇuchithan, the chief of Puduvai,
composed poems about
how the music flowed like a flood of nectar
from the holes of the bamboo flute
in the beautiful hands of Govindan
who has curly hair and a tuft on his head.
Those who know Tamil well
and recite these poems of Vishṇuchithan
will be among the devotees of the god.

Kalidasa on the feelings of Plants and Animals
Periyalvar must have mastered Kalidasa’s work. We see in Shakuntalam ,
Priyamvada says to Shakuntala
“The bitterness of parting is not yours alone; look around and see how the holy grove grieves, knowing the hour of parting from you is near:
The doe tosses out mouthful of grass
the peacocks dance no more
pale leaves flutter down
as if their vines are shedding their limbs.
Shakuntala also reacts to the feelings of jasmine climber and deer.

Music Route to Heaven! Story of Saivite saint Aaanaaya Naayanaar also depicts the effect of music on cattle and birds.

There are different ways to reach God. Jnana route, Bhakti route, Karma route and Yoga route are some of the ways. Hindus popularised another route to heaven—Music route which is part of Bhakti route. That is the simplest and easiest route. It is like a high speed motorway. Anyone can follow it even without knowing music. You simply join a Bhajan group and ‘shout in your coarse and harsh voice’, but with sincerity and purity in heart. God answers immediately. Even in the music route, there are some short cuts. One devotee just played a flute and reached God!! This interesting story is found in the Tamil Purana called Peria (Great) Puranam.
Peria Puranam in Tamil gives the history of 63 saints who were devotees of Lord Siva. It is in verses. It was composed by Sekkizar in the twelfth century CE. This work tells the story of the lives of Tamil Saivite saints who lived at least 1200 years ago. The enthralling stories of the 63 Nayanars (Saivite saints) speak of the matchless devotion and fathomless love for god.
Aanaayar was a cowherd. He lived in Tirumangalam of Melmazanatu, part of Choza territory. He played ‘panchakshara’ mantra (NAMA SIVAYA) on flute and God came and gave him Moksha! Here is the beautiful story of Aanaayar from two English translations:–
“Aanaayar used to drive his herds to the uncultivated land, and protect them from diseases and wild beasts. He also led them to lush pasture and clear water, so that their number rapidly increased. Like Lord Krishna he carried a flute (Vamsi) with him and used to play divine music. He used to play Lord’s Five Letter Prayer (Pancha Akshara = Na-Ma-Si-Va-Ya), with each of the seven notes accurately pitched. He poured forth a stream of such sweet and graceful sound that the whole world stood still to hear.
One day Aanaayar set out to drive the herds of cattle and their calves to pasture. The blue peacocks called; the beetle sang their forest songs among the creepers; the white jasmine buds smiled seductively. Her waist slender as the lightning, her breast swaying gently as she moved, the maiden TIME drew near to dance in the wide amphitheatre of the world.
The herdsmen, staff in hand drove the cattle out to graze over the cool pastures, and when their leader drew near, they gathered round to greet him. Nearby there stood a cassia tree (Kondrai in Tamil, Siva’s favourite tree), its branches swinging low and its flowers hanging down in clusters, like garlands made by human hands, or like Siva’s matted locks. When he saw the tree, he stood and gazed upon it spell bound, his mind wholly centred on the Lord. Then from his heart he began to pour out his love without restraint.
As his love welled up within and overflowed, he took up his flute and played as he was wont in praise of the Lord’s Five Letter Prayer, with music sweet as nectar that melted the very bones of every living creature!
Herd of cows ceased to chew the cud, Fell into trance and gathered around him, Calves with milk-froth ringed mouths Ceased to suckle at the teats of their mothers, Bands of bulls with spreading horns Deer and other forest fauna All with hairs on their hides a tingle, Gathered around.
Dancing flocks of peacocks Ceased their strutting and gathered around him, Coveys of birds, their hearts filled with the music Which entered through their ears, Roosted around him, with roosted senses, The hefty herdsmen Working in the neighbourhood Gathered around him, Leaving aside half finished jobs.
Denizens of the underworld of snakes Debouched through underground passages Mountain-dwelling maids Many many massed around Mazed in their minds Vinjayas, Saranars, Kinnaras, Amaras, Heaven-dwellers all of undiminishing luminance All in daze, on the beautiful sky above, In their chariots in the clouds crowded they.
As the tormentors and the tormented Enjoyed with the same emotions, The snake of mouth with full of pearly teeth Swooned and fell on the peacock; the lion of unflagging ferocity And the massive elephant sat together; Beside the jaws of the tiger, The delicate mouthed deer bedded.
The music of the fluting Of the hollow reed, Filling the world and capturing the heavens, Rose in volume vast enough To reach the holy ears Of the out of reach-of deceitful devotion Sire Who dances in the Golden Hall.
On graciously hearing The music of the flute of Anayar, The creator of the music, the Lord With an eye on the forehead Accompanied by the Willowy Dame of Austerities, Whose heart was compassion incarnate Mounted the bull An appeared on the aerial highway With his matted locks, the Nursery of the Moon Trailing behind him.
The heavenly hosts came too, jostling with the gods and crowding round. No other sound was heard but the soaring music of the flute, praising the Lord in the Five Letter Prayer.
Wishing to enjoy such music for all eternity, the Lord then said to Aanaayar, “Come just as you are, and live with us”.
The Lord then returned to the golden court. As he went, the earth shone bright with the flowers that rained down from on high. Countless sages chanted from the Vedas in his praise, and Aanaayar went with him, still playing on his flute.

WHAT IS COSMOLOGY?
It is a branch of astronomy that deals with the structure and evolution of the universe as an ordered whole.
WHAT IS BIG BANG?
The hypothetical explosive event that marked the origin of the universe as we know it. It took place about 10-20 billion years ago. The big bang explosion threw the compact material outwards, producing the expanding universe. The cause of the big bang is unknown.
All of us know that it happened in the sky with a big noise. Then there was gusty wind and fire everywhere. Then came the water. From water, life evolved.
The above sequence is right if we take our earth as the model.
Since Hindus are the only people who consider TIME is cyclical not linear, our poets sing about Big Shrink as well.
Appar (600 CE) in a decad/Pathikam on Shiva at Pullirukku Velur, also known as Vaitheeswaran Koil near Mayuram says,
His form in fulgurant; He is ONE in the ether,
TWO fold in wind that blows a main , THREE fold
in the form of ruddy fire , FOUR fold in the water that flows
downward and FIVE fold in the expanse of earth;
he is of the eternal form……………………….
Hindus gave certain qualities or virtues to the
Panchabhtas /five elements.
They are called Tanmaatraas . the five tanmatras are sound, touch, form, taste and smell. In Sanskrit
Sabda- ether
Sparsa- air
Rupa- fire
Rasa – water
Gantham – earth.
1.Ether is pervaded by sound.
1,2.Air by sound and touch.
123.Fire by sound, touch and form.
1234.Water by sound, touch, form and taste.
12345.Earth by the above four and smell.
We see it in Dasavatara as theory of evolution: Fish, amphibians, land animals, half man and half animal, full man with a weapon, Exemplary man (Rama), man with tricks (Krishna).
Earth was Firey ball with gusty winds in the beginning and then rain and water came. When water receded, we saw earth and land animals evolved on it and at the peak of Land animals stood Man.
Purananuru verse 2 and 51 mentioned it. Puram poet Mudi Nagarayar praised the king with all the qualities of Five Elements.
Nammaalvaar also sang about this.

What is the science in it?
First there was a sky with sound;
Then came wind and fire;
That created rain and water;
From water came Life forms.
Hindus told it to the layman in a story format:
Lord Vishnu was lying in the vast water in half sleep/sleeping but conscious.
Then came Brahma/creator;
From him came all the living beings.
The water that Vishnu was lying is the Potential energy/Shiva
All the activities mentioned above was the Kinetic energy/Goddess Shakti.
Hindus beautifully named Goddess as Power, in Sanskrit ,Shakti, used in all the Indian languages.

Great Saivite poet and saint Manikkavasagar who lived before Appar said,

பாரிடை ஐந்தாய்ப் பரந்தாய் போற்றி Earth with Five qualities
நீரிடை நான்காய் நிகழ்ந்தாய் போற்றி Water with Four qualities
தீயிடை மூன்றாய்த் திகழ்ந்தாய் போற்றி Fire with Three qualities
வளியிடை இரண்டாய் மகிழ்ந்தாய் போற்றிAir/Wind with Two qualities
வெளியிடை ஒன்றாய் விளைந்தாய் போற்றி Space with one Quality
He used the Five Elements in the reverse order. Manikka vasagar used the same numbers to praise Lord Shiva

2000 year old Purananuru Poem
மண் திணிந்த Earth நிலனும்,
நிலம் ஏந்திய Sound /Sky விசும்பும்,
விசும்பு தைவரு Wind, வளியும்
வளித் தலைஇய Fire தீயும்,
தீ முரணிய நீரும், , Water, என்றாங்கு
ஐம்பெரும் பூதத்து இயற்கை போலப்
Here the poet Muranjiyur Mudi Naagaraayar changed the order just to fit the verse in Anthaathi genre.
Anthaathi means last word of each line must be the first word of next line. The five qualities are attributed to the King, who Hindus worshipped or venerated as god.

Three Interpretations
Divya Prapandham
Nammaalvaar, a Vaishnavite saint, who lived later, used the five elements in the same order and attributed them to Lord Vishnu:
1 ஏக மூர்த்தி 2 இரு மூர்த்தி 3 மூன்று மூர்த்தி 4 பல மூர்த்தி- ஆகி, 5 ஐந்து பூதம் ஆய் இரண்டு சுடர் ஆய் அருவு ஆகி, நாகம் ஏறி நடுக் கடலுள் துயின்ற நாராயணனே உன்- ஆகம் முற்றும் அகத்து அடக்கி ஆவி அல்லல் மாய்த்ததே.
English translation of verse 4.3.3:
You assumed a single form, then two, three and many, The form you took of the senses five, the Sun and the Moon; Formless, you did everywhere, as Internal Controller, pervade, Repose you did, Oh, Nārāyaṇa, in mid-ocean on serpent-bed And now your body and all it needs you have compressed Right in my mind and thus feel fully relaxed.
Notes; Another interpretation:
(ii) Single Form: This refers to the state of affairs prior to creation, when the Lord alone subsisted, containing within Himself, in a subtle state, all sentient and non-sentient beings; there was no scope then for differentiation, by name and form.
(iii) Two forms: Keen on creating the Sportive Universe, the Lord assumes the twin forms of ‘Prakriti’ and ‘Mahān’
(iv) Three Forms: The triple ‘ahaṅkāras’ of Sattva, Rājas and Tāmas;
(v) Many Forms: The wonderful variety (i.e.) variegated forms of creation arising through inequalities among the three ‘Guṇas’, referred to in (4) above, the five sense-organs, the five elements etc.

Another interpretation
3147. O Narayaṇa! 1 You are the only god. 1,2 You are the two gods—the sun and the moon. 1,2,3You are the three gods—Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma (all)and you are all the gods.
5 You are the five elements—water, fire, wind, earth and sky. You are formless. You climbed on the heads of Kalingan and danced. You sleep on the middle of the ocean. I kept you in my heart and all my troubles went away.
My Comments
The above two re wrong interpretations because Appar and Manikkavasagar who lived before Nammalvar have given us the correct interpretation.
Moreover, we can clearly see the influence of Maanikka vaasagar in Nammaalvaar poems. He clearly used MAANIKKA and VAASAGA in innumerable stanzas.

Aksata – uninjured 4-9-8
Anya-dyus -fever that attacks on alternate days 7-116-2
Apaana – air breathed out 10-2-13
We have already seen praana and vyaana in the Rig Veda.
Apvaa – some stomach disease – 3-2-5
Arundhati – a plant used for healing 4-13-1
Arundhati was a low caste woman named Akshamala in the Manu smriti. But a star and a plant and a Nyaya are named after her. Her name figured at least six times in 2000 year old Sangam Tamil literature.
Arabs called it Alcol which is in Tirukkural- alakai.
Agandu – a species of insect 2-31-2
Alpasayu- an insect 4-36-9
Aasarika – rheumatic pain 19-34-10
Ubhaya – dyus – malarial fever that attacks with a gap of two days 1-26-4; 7-116-3;
The word UBHAYA for two or both is used until this day in letters and Vaishnavite invitations.
Kilaasa – leukoderma 1-23-1,2;
Kliivatva- impotency 6-138;
Gandamaalaa – inflammation of the glands in the neck.
Gandaa for neck is used in all te names
Neelakaandan – blue necked Shiva or peacock G=K
Jadinga – a sedative plant used by Trikakuda to treat balaasa.
Jvara- fever 5-30-8
Until this day the word jvara is used.
Tritiyaka- malarial fever that attacks with a gap of three days 1-25-4; 7-116-2;
Balaasa – consumption of phthisis 4-98;6-14-1;
Yaksma- TB 5-308 and 16;
Varuna grhita – suffering from Jalodhara
Vitritiyaka- malarial fever that attacks with a gap of two days 5-22-13;
Sirsaamaya – headache5-4-10;9-8-1;
Sadam -di -malarial fever that rises daily 1-2-13
Harimaa – jaundice 19-44-2

Asthiivantau- knee cap 10-2-2
Ucchalankhau- the portion between heel and ankle 10-2-1;

This word is used in Tamil and all medical books as cephala; C=K;
Kusindha- loins, pelvis 10-2-3
Kha – orifice 10-2-6;

Sapta khani siirsaani- seven pores of the head 10-2-5;

Bhagwan Singh has taken a lot of time in compiling various lists under different heads in his book THE VEDIC HARAPPANS.
Those who are interested may go to each hymn and find more medical secrets.
Tenth canto has many important terms. One can compare these terms with the terms in the Samhitas of Sushruta and Caraka. A lot of scope for medical research in the Vedas.
If one studies the hymn where the medical terms occur, one will be surprised to find out newer things in medical systems.
Known Medical Miracles
We already know the medical miracles in the Vedas particularly linked with the Asvini Devas, the doctors of the Vedic period.
This shows considerable advancement in the medical field. Rejuvenation of Cyavana (RV 10-39-4) and Purandhi’s husband (RV 1-116-13), setting the fractured thigh of Vispala through support (RV 1-116-13) and curing of the blindness of Rjrsva (RV 1-116-17).

Savitri
Near my husband no place can be too far.
Human beings do not trust even themselves as they trust the saints; it is from love trust arises and because the saints have love for all, people have trust in them.
Yama
Blessed one! What you have said that I have not heard before except from you. It gives me great satisfaction. excepting the life of Satyavan, ask for a fourth boon and go back.
Savitri
May I with Satyavan have hundred sons, who brave and courageous, will continue our family line. This is the fourth boon I seek from you, Lord of Death.
And the Lord of Death granted that wish of Savitri as well. You will have hundred sons, who brave and courageous, who will enhance your happiness. Now go back, he said to her.
Savitri
With the power of truth, the saints keep sun on its course and sustain the earth. It is from the saints that the present, the past and the future derive their support, being with the saintly, people do not suffer.
Given to the good of the others, selflessly, the saints do not look upon each other with narrow concerns of the self.
The blessings of the saints never in vain. Nobody feels reduced by the saints, nor anybody’s self-interest suffer. In the nearness of the saints the three get united: blessings, self-esteem and the self-interest. the saints are thus protectors of the world.
Yama
The more you speak, and say in words most elegant, the things that I have deep meaning and are agreeable to mind and heart, the greater grows my feelings of bhakti for you. Ask from me, some exceptional boon.
Savitri
You have bestowed upon me the boon of having a hundred sons of my own that cannot come true without my union with my husband, whose life you are taking away. Therefore, I seek from you this last boon that Satyavan restored to life, for without him I am like dead. Without my husband, I have no desire for the prosperities of the world, nor any desire for any heavenly existence. Without him I do not even with to live.
Saying THATHAASTU (that shall be so) Yama released from the cord of mortality.
The Mahabharata shows how one’s pain is because of the pain of the other; Satyavan’s pain at the pain of anxiety of his father and mother and Savitri’s pain for both. To reassure Satyavan wiping his tears, she spoke to him thus:
Savitri
If I have ever done Tapasya (penance) in its true discipline, then may this night be blessed both for my mother-in-law and father-in-law and blessed for my husband.
They reached home from the dark forest as fast as they could.
All the seers from nearby Ashramas including Suvarcha, Gautama, Bharadwaj, Dhalbha, Ghaumya praised Savitri’s victory over Yama.
