அங்கண் மாஞாலத்தரசர் அபிமான
பங்கமாய் வந்து நின் பள்ளிக்கட்டிற் கீழே
சங்கம் இருப்பார் போல் வந்து தலைப் பெய்தோம்;
கிங்கிணி வாய்ச் செய்த தாமரைப் பூப் போலே,
செங்கண் சிறுச் சிறிதே எம்மேல் விழியாவோ?
திங்களும் ஆதித்தியனும் எழுந்தாற் போல்,
அங்கண் இரண்டும் கொண்டெங்கள் மேல் நோக்குதியேல்
எங்கள் மேல் சாபம் இழிந்தேலோர் எம் பாவாய். (22)
495. The girls coming to wake up the god say, “We have come to you affectionately, all together as if we were queens of this wide world, and we stay by your bed and worship you. Won’t your beautiful lotus eyes bright as the sun and the moon, show us even a little grace? If you look at us, our karma will go away. We are going to worship our Pāvai
Like all the famous kings Of the wide World, that is pretty, Have crowded near your cot, After surrendering their ego, We also have come near. Will not the sight, Of your red eyes which is like the lotus Fall little by little on us? If you see us using those eyes, Which are like sun and the moon, All the curse on us will vanish, And we can worship our Goddess Pavai
Beneath Thy beside have we gathered
As kings on this large handsome earth
Would crowd around, sans ego;
Wouldst Thou glance at us , with Thy
Eye, a la trinket, lotus blooming,
Sun and moon awake at a time in mirth!
If Thou glimpse with eyes two beautiful
By little and little tarnished,
Sin and curse shall vanish
From we the girls vanquished;
Listen and consider our damsel.

மாரி மலை முழைஞ்சில் மன்னிக் கிடந்துறங்கும்
சீரிய சிங்கம் அறிவுற்றுத் தீ விழித்து,
வேரி மயிர் பொங்க எப்பாடும் பேர்ந்துதறி,
மூரி நிமிர்ந்து முழங்கிப் புறப்பட்டுப்,

The girls coming to wake up the god say, “As you, colored as dark as a kāyam flower, wake up you are like a lion that has slept in a mountain cave in the rainy season, that opens its fiery eyes and roars, its mane hanging low. You come from your temple and sit on your majestic throne. Give us your grace, and help us. We are going to worship our Pāvai
Like the majestic lion wakes up with ire, From the mountain cave in the rainy season, Looks with fiery sight, And with deep angry sweat from all the hairs, Turns up its head with awe, And comes out making lots of din, Hey Lord, who is the colour of the blue lotus, Come from your temple to here, And sit on the majestic royal throne, And hear with compassion, For why we have come here, And help us to worship our Goddess Pavai.
Verse 23
As would a fierce lion in a mountain den
Stay along in winter, lie asleep gang with
Enlightened, open eye, emit fire, mane erect,
Stretch in all direction, Oh! Bilberry hued;
Thou shalt roar! Start with a bang,
This ward move from Thy temple forthwith
Settle on carved out throne exquisite
We have come unto Thee to woo;
Ponder over our requisite;
Bestow grace, the desire implicit
Listen and consider our damsel.

அன்று இவ்வுலகம் அளந்தாய்! அடி போற்றி,
சென்றங்குத் தென் இலங்கை செற்றாய்! திறல் போற்றி,
பொன்றச் சகடம் உதைத்தாய்! புகழ்போற்றி,
கன்று குணிலா எறிந்தாய்! கழல் போற்றி,
குன்று குடையா எடுத்தாய்! குணம் போற்றி,
வென்று பகைகெடுக்கும் நின் கையில் வேல் போற்றி,
என்றென்று ன் சேவகமே ஏத்திப் பறைகொள்வான்
இன்று யாம் வந்தோம், இரங்கேலோர் எம் பாவாய். (24)

497. The girls come, praise the god and ask for the Paṛai, “You once measured the world. We praise your feet. You went to southern Lanka and killed the Rakshasas. We praise your strength. You destroyed Sakaṭāsuran when he came as a cart. We praise your fame. When Vathsasuran came as a calf you threw him at Kabithasuran who had taken the form of a vilam tree and killed them both. We worship your ankleted feet. You carried Govardhana mountain to save the cows. We praise your compassion. We praise the spear in your hands that conquers your enemies. We want to serve you always and have come to receive the Paṛai. Give us your grace. We are going to worship our Pāvai
We worship your feet which measured the world then, We worship your fame of winning over the king of Southern Lanka, We worship thine valour in breaking the ogre who came like a cart, We worship thy strength which threw the calf on the tree, We worship thine goodness in making the mountain as an umbrella[34], And we worship the great spear in your hand which led to your victory, We have come hear to sing always for ever your praises, And get as gift the drums to sing, And worship our Goddess Pavai.

All hail, Thy energy went thither, conquered Lanka South;
All hail, Thy glory kicked the wheel to ruins;
All hail, Thy foot the calf, as a throw stick tossed;
All hail, Thy generosity held the hillock an umbrella;
All hail, Thy spike won and shattered uncouth
And so on singing Thy bravery,
Revering Thy laurel factual
To obtain the desire auspicious
Have come this day, we ambitious
Yield, listen and consider our damsel.

இதுவரை யுத்தகாண்டத்தில் அளிக்கப்பட்ட வரம் பற்றிய விவரங்களைப் பார்த்தோம். இனி உத்தரகாண்டத்தில் வரும் வரம் பற்றிய விவரங்களைக் காண்போம்.
உத்தரகாண்டத்தில் 110 ஸர்க்கங்களில் 3276 ஸ்லோகங்கள் உள்ளன.
உத்தரகாண்டத்தில் 32 வரங்களைப் பற்றிய விவரங்களை வால்மீகி முனிவர் தந்துள்ளார்.
மூன்றாவது ஸர்க்கமான, “குபேரனது உத்பத்தியும் லங்கை முதலியனவற்றை அடைவதும்’ என்ற ஸர்க்கத்தில் வைஸ்ரவணனின் தவத்தை மெச்சி பிரம்மா கொடுத்த வரம் பற்றிய விவரங்களைக் காண்கிறோம்.
புலஸ்திய மஹரிஷியினுடைய புத்திரரான விச்ரவஸ் என்பருக்கு பரத்வாஜ மஹரிஷி தனது புத்திரியை விவாகம் செய்து வைத்தார். அந்த தம்பதியருக்கு வைஸ்ரவணன் என்ற மகன் பிறந்தான். வைஸ்ரவணன் இளமையிலிருந்தே தவம் புரிவதில் ஆர்வம் கொண்டிருந்தான்.
ஆயிரம் வருடங்கள் ஜலத்தை மட்டும் ஆகாரமாகவும் பின்னர் காற்றை மட்டும் ஆகாரமாகவும் பின்னர் ஆகாரமே இல்லாமலும் கடும் தவத்தைப் புரிந்தார் வைஸ்ரவணன். பிரம்மா இதனால் மகிழ்ச்சியுற்று வைஸ்ரவணன் முன் தோன்றி, “நீ வரம் பெற உரியவனாகி விட்டாய். உனக்கு வேண்டியதைக் கேள்” என்று அருள்கிறார்.

குத்து விளக்கெரியக் கோட்டுக்கால் கட்டில் மேல்
மெத்தென்ற பஞ்ச சயனத்தின் மேல் ஏறிக்
கொத்தலர் பூங்குழல் நப்பின்னை கொங்கை மேல்
வைத்துக் கிடந்த மலர் மார்பா! வாய் திறவாய்;
மைத் தடம் கண்ணினாய்! நீ உன் மணாளனை
எத்தனை யேலும் துயில் எழ ஒட்டாய் காண்,
எத்தனை யேலும் பிரிவாற்ற கில்லாயால்,
தத்துவம் அன்று தகவேலோர் எம் பாவாய். (19)
492. The girls coming to wake up the god and Nappinnai say, “O Thirumāl adorned with garlands, you sleep on the breasts of Nappinnai, adorned with beautiful flowers on her hair, on a soft mattress on an ivory cot and the room is bright with lights. O Nappinnai with kohl-darkened eyes, open your mouth, How could you not get up and want to see your beloved? Surely you can understand that you won’t be able to be away from him for long. This isn’t good for you. We are going to worship our Pāvai
In the light of the oil lamp, On the ornamental four legged ivory cot, On the soft bed filled with cotton, Reclining on the busts of Nappinnai, You sleep, Oh he who has a flower like heart, Please open your mouth . She who has, wide black eyes with collyrium. We know that you will never allow him to wake up, For you can never bear to be away from Him, This is not that good, And cannot be accepted by us. Please allow us to worship our Goddess Pavai.
Kudos to Thee! Settled on a cot ivory footed
Soft silk cotton mattress with quality quintet
In glimmering light of a metal lamp and
Inclined on the bosom of Nappinnai
Having flowerful locks bunch of blossoms bloomed;
Thy chest a flower bed, open Thy mouth instant;
Thy eye graced with
Eye liner black, a charm;
Let whatsoever time, wouldn’t arouse thy groom;
Not howsoever endure a moments separation this norm
In neither reality nor befitting, consider our damsel.

முப்பத்து மூவர் அமரர்க்கு முன் சென்று
கப்பம் தவிர்க்கும் கலியே! துயில் எழாய்;
செப்பம் உடையாய்! திரள் உடையாய்!
செற்றார்க்கு வெப்பம் கொடுக்கும் விமலா! துயில் எழாய்;
செப்பன்ன மென் முலை செவ்வாய் சிறு மருங்குல்
நப்பின்னை நங்காய்! திருவே! துயில் எழாய்;
உக்கமும் தட்டொளியும் தந்துன் மணாளனை
இப்போதே எம்மை நீராட்டேலோர் எம் பாவாய். (20)
493. The girls coming to wake up the lord and Nappinnai say, “O dear god, if any of the thirty-three crores of the gods have troubles, you go and remove them. Get up, faultless, strong one, vex your enemies and take care of your devotees. O beautiful young Nappinnai with soft breasts like small cheppus, a red mouth and a tiny waist, get up! Give us fans and mirrors and send your husband with us so that we can praise him and go to bathe. We are going to worship our Pāvai
Who removed sorrow and fear, From the thirty three sections of Devas[33], Even before they approached you, Oh Lord, Who is glittering like gold, Oh Lord, who has inimitable valour, Please wake up, Oh Lady Nappinnai, Who has desirable busts like golden pots. Who has little red mouth, And who has thin narrow hips, Please wake up, Oh Goddess of wealth. Please give mirror and fan, Just now to your consort, And allow us to take bath, And thus worship our Goddess Pavai.
Move ahead of thirty-three celestial beings
Thou forestall tremor, vanguard, Mighty, awake!
Righteous, energetic, immaculate, would persecute
Arrogance and subjugate, Thou shalt awake!
Nappinnai damsel ! wit breast a la copper, soft;
Rosy cheeks and tiny waist. Lakshmi ! Thou shalt awake!
Present us Thy groom,
Fan circular and optics;
And bathe us right now we derelicts
In His ocean compassion Thou mediatrix
Listen and consider our damsel.

ஏற்ற கலங்கள் எதிர்பொங்கி மீதளிப்ப
மாற்றாதே பால் சொரியும் வள்ளல் பெரும் பசுக்கள்
ஆற்றப் படைத்தான் மகனே! அறிவுறாய்;
ஊற்றமுடையாய்! பெரியாய்!
உலகினில் தோற்றமாய் நின்ற சுடரே! துயில் எழாய்;
மாற்றார் உனக்கு வலி தொலைந்து உன் வாசற்கண்
ஆற்றாது வந்து உன்னடி பணியுமா போலே,
போற்றியாம் வந்தோம் புகழ்ந்தேலோர் எம் பாவாய். (21)
494. The girls coming to wake up the god say, “O son of Nandagopan, lord of fine cows that yield milk generously and make the pots overflow, you are wise, a bright light and our refuge. Get up. We have come to your door as if we were your enemies unable to fight with you. We come and worship your feet, praising you whose fame is abundant. We are going to worship our Pāvai
Oh son of him, Who owned several cows, Which gave so much milk, That always the milking vessel got overflowed, Please wake up. Oh Lord, who is full of mercy, Oh Lord, who is better than the best, Oh lord, who is the light that began the world, Please wake up. Like your flock of defeated enemies, Falling at your feet in surrender, We came praising you, So that we get fame, And worship our Goddess Pavai.
in vessels filled to brim, grand donor cows
issue incessant flow of milk to counter flow:
Oh! Son of Nandagopala! Owner of such immense;
Get enlightened! Thou resolute, magnanimous
Remain pre-eminent on this earth
A beacon resplendent aglow
We have come lauding and hailing;
Forlorn sans energy, and assiduous;
As would foes, at Thy gate unanimous
Have gathered to surrender to Thy foot glorious;
Arise! Listen and consider, our damsel.

நாயகனாய் நின்ற நந்தகோபனுடைய கோயில் காப்பானே!
கொடித்தோன்றும் தோரண வாயில் காப்பானே!
மணிக்கதவம் தாள் திறவாய்;
ஆயர்சிறுமியரோமுக்கு
அறை பறை மாயன் மணிவண்ணன் நென்னலே வாய் நேர்ந்தான்;
தூயோமாய் வந்தோம் துயில் எழப் பாடுவான்;
வாயால் முன்னம் முன்னம் மாற்றாதே அம்மா!
நீ நேய நிலைக்கதவம் நீக்கேலோர் எம் பாவாய். (16)
The girls wake up the god and ask for the Paṛai.
489. The girls take to the guards of Nandagopan’s palace. “You are the guard of the palace of the lord Nandagopan who protect the doors that are decorated with flags and festoons. The dark jewel-colored Māyavan said yesterday that he would give a sounding Paṛai to us, the cowherd girls. We have bathed to make ourselves pure and have come to sing and wake him up. O guard! Don’t say this or that and make excuses. Open the front door of this palace! We are going to worship our Pāvai.”
Hey, He who guards the palace of Nanda Gopa Hey, who gauards the ornamental door with flags, Please be kind to open the door with bells, For yesterday the enchanter Kannan, Has promised to give beating drums, To us the girls from the houses of cow herds. We have come after purification, To wake Him up with song, So do not talk of this and that, Hey dear man, And open the door with closed latches, So that we can worship our Goddess Pavai.
Thou guarding the temple of Nandagopala
Who is supreme of our clan
Guard of entrance with flag staff ostensive
And festoon suspended across;
Open latch of jewel-studded door;
He Elusive gem coloured had plan
Vouched yesternight Ayarpadi lass, the drum to knock;
We have come immaculate to pray arouse;
Thou shalt not postpone and pronounce
Open the lovely, befit door at once.

அம்பரமே, தண்ணீரே, சோறே அறம் செய்யும்
எம் பெருமான்! நந்தகோபாலா! எழுந்திராய்;
கொம்பனார்க்கெல்லாம் கொழுந்தே! குல விளக்கே!
எம் பெருமாட்டி! யசோதாய்! அறிவுறாய்;
அம்பரம் ஊடறுத்தோங்கி உலகளந்த
உம்பர் கோமானே! உறங்காதெழுந்திராய்;
செம் பொற் கழல் அடிச் செல்வா! பலதேவா!
உம்பியும் நீயும் உறங்கேலோர் எம் பாவாய். (17)
490. The girls come to wake up Nandagopan, Yashoda, Baladevan and the gods, say, “O Nandagopalan, dear lord of the cowherds who give clothes, water and food to all, get up! O Yashoda, tender shoot among all the women who are soft as vines, the bright light of your family, and our dear one, get up. O king of the gods with feet adorned with pure golden anklets. You grew tall, split the sky and measured the world. Dear one, do not sleep. Get up. O Baladeva, don’t sleep with your little brother. We are going to worship our Pāvai
Hey Nandagopa, who does good deeds and charity, Who gives water, cloth and food to others, Pleas wake up. Our lady Yasodha, who is the light of the homes of cow herds, She who is dear to all the ladies, Please wake up. Hey ,Krishna who is the king of Gods, Who went up tearing th sky. Please wake up, and do not sleep.
Hey Baladeva, who wears pure golden anklets, Please wake up along with your brother, So we can worship our Goddess Pavai.
Attire, water and food thou donate
Our patron Nandagopala arise!
Sprout of a creeping plant! Light of our clan!
Our patroness Yasoda, get enlightened!
Grown piercing the cosmos. Thou had meted this earth
King of Angels! Thou shalt arise!
Shed thy sleep, drowse no more,
Baladeva wealthy! Thy foot bright adorned
By gold anklet of a victor;
Junior and thyself our benefactor
Discard drowsing!
Arise and consider our damsel.

உந்து மத களிற்றன் ஓடாத தோள் வலியன்,
நந்தகோபாலன் மருமகளே! நப்பின்னாய்!
கந்தம் கமழும் குழலி! கடை திறவாய்;
வந்தெங்கும் கோழி அழைத்தன காண்;
மாதவிப் பந்தல் மேல் பல் கால் குயில் இனங்கள் கூவின காண்;
பந்தார் விரலி! உன் மைத்துனன் பேர் பாட,
செந்தாமரைக் கையால் சீரார் வளை ஒலிப்ப
வந்து திறவாய், மகிழ்ந்தேலோர் எம் பாவாய். (18)
491. The girls coming to wake up Nappinnai say, “O, fragrant-haired Nappinnai, daughter-in-law of strong-armed Nandagopan, who own of many rutting elephants, open the door. The roosters are calling to wake everyone and the flock of cuckoo birds sitting on the vines blooming with mādhavi flowers call out. Come, your fingers are beautiful and soft, open the door so the lovely bracelets on your beautiful lotus hands jingle. Come and join us to sing and praise the name of your husband. We are going to worship our Pāvai
Hey, Who is the fair daughter in law, Of Nanda gopa, who has several elephants, And who is a great hero who never ran away from his enemies, Hey Lady Nappinnai], who has hair surrounded by holy scent, Please be kind to open the door. The cocks are everywhere waking us up, The koels flock on the jasmine Pandals, And coo so that we all wake up, Hey Lady who happily plays ball, To help us sing your Lords fame, With your hands with tingling bangles, Please open the door with happiness, So that we can worship our Goddess Pavai.
Oh! Daughter-in-law of Nandagopala
Who hath a shoulder mighty, never a fleer
A valiant tusker emitting vigour; atop jasmine arcade
Again ‘n’ gain flock of larks had cooed;
Nappinnai thy hair perfume fragrant , door thou open!
Cock come around, hath crowed with vigour;
Thou art asleep, ball agrip, as we sing thy groom;
Come along! Throw open delighted
To clang thy bangle bright,
In pinky lotus hand a sight;

மாற்றமும் தாராரோ வாசல் திறவாதார்?
நாற்றத் துழாய் முடி நாராயணன்
நம்மால் போற்றப் பறை தரும் புண்ணியனால்
பண்டொரு நாள் கூற்றத்தின் வாய்வீழ்ந்த கும்ப கரணனும்
தோற்றம் உனக்கே பெருந் துயில்தான் தந்தானோ?
ஆற்ற அனந்தல் உடையாய்! அருங்கலமே!
தேற்றமாய் வந்து திறவேலார் எம் பாவாய். (10)

483. The girls come to wake up their friends. They say, “You want to find happiness doing your nombu but you don’t open the door and don’t answer us. The virtuous Nārāyaṇan, adorned with a thulasi garland, will give us the Paṛai. Does Kumbakarṇan who fell into the mouth of Yama in battle make you sleep so soundly? You are very lazy! You are a precious ornament! Wake up and open the door. Let us go and worship our Pāvai.”
Oh lady fine, who has entered the heaven, Due to penance done in last birth, Won’t you reply, please Won’t you open the door, please If we pray the God Narayana, Having with him the scented garland, Made of holy basil, He would give us gifts, many, He is the same who is holy in times ancient, Sent Kumbhakarna to his death, After beating him in the field of war. Did that ogre give you his sleep, Before he went off from here, Oh lass who is very lazy, Oh lass, who is like pretty jewels, Wake up from your sleep, well, And open the door. And worship the Goddess Pavai.

If one wouldn’t open entry, should she not speak?
Adorned fragrant basil crown, Narayana virtuous
Bestows the desire on our prayer;
Of yore consigned Kumbakarna to death.
Has that demon lost in contest peak

Lazy to the core
Thou shalt precious décor
Trimmed and dressed, open the door

கற்றுக் கறவைக் கணங்கள் பலகறந்து செற்றார் திறலழியச் சென்று செருகச் செய்யும் குற்றமொன்றில்லாத கோவலர் தம் பொற்கொடியே புற்றரவு அல்குல் புனமயிலே போதராய் சுற்றத்துத் தோழிமார் எல்லாரும் வந்துநின் முற்றம் புகுந்து முகில்வண்ணன் பேர்பாட சிற்றாதே பேசாதே செல்வப்பெண்டாட்டி! நீ எற்றுக்கு உறங்கும் பொருளேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.
484. The girls come to wake up their friends. They say, “You are as beautiful as a golden vine, the daughter of the faultless cowherds, owners of many cows, who fight their enemies bravely and destroy their valor. You are as beautiful as a forest peacock, get up. Your friends in the neighborhood have come and stand in your front yard and praise the fame of the dark cloud-colored Kaṇṇan but you have not stirred from your bed. O dear girl, you have not said a word. Why are you sleeping like this? Let us go and worship our Pāvai.”
Oh daughter of the cattle baron, Who milks herds of cows, And wages war on enemies And makes his enemies loose their strength, Oh Golden tendril, Oh lass who has the mount of venus, Like the hood of the snake, Wake up and come, When your flock of friends, Have come to your courtyard, And sing of Krishna, Who has the colour of the cloud, Oh rich, rich lady, How can you neither move nor talk, And lie in deep trance, And not worship our Goddess pavai.
Thou, the daughter of cowherd, who
Sans a single guilt , milks many a milk-cow
Daunts arrogance, pre empt stuns at its precincts;
Thy girdle seems a serpent in a pit;
Wild jungle peacock start!
All neighbour mates have arrived now
Entered thy courtyard in grace
And sing the name of the cloud coloured yet
Creeper gold! Unperturbed and mute
Drowsest thou; what for, our pet?
Beloved bride, listen and consider, our damsel- 12

485. The girls come to wake up their friends. They say, “You come from a rich family. The buffaloes that just gave birth drip milk from their udders lovingly, thinking of their calves, and the front yard of the house is wet with their milk. We sing praising the names of the sweet god who angrily destroyed the king of southern Lanka but you haven’t opened your mouth. Wake up. Why do you sleep like this? Don’t you know all the people in your house are up? Let us go and worship our Pāvai.”
Hey, sister of the rich one, who owned, The mooing she buffalo with a calf, Which took pity on the calf, And gave out plenty, Of milk to it through its udder, And made his courtyard slushy with milk, We are assembled in thine yard, In the dripping fog, And sing about Him, Who killed in anger the king of Southern Lanka And who is very dear one, But open your mouth, you don’t. At least wake up now, Why this very deep slumber, For people of all houses around, Have already become alert And are ready to worship our Goddess Pavai…
Young buffalo yearns for calf, mumbles:
Milk dribbles from udder and home a mire wet;
Thou, sister of a fair and wealthy, with a snow hail
Over the head as we clench thy entrance
We pray Him the Delight of our mind,
He by His wrath had let
The monarch of Lanka South trounced.
Shalt arise now the very least
What a grand sleep you acquiesce
Residents all aware and muse,
Open thy mouth! listen and consider, our damsel.

Item 429
Context: Two Chozha kings were feuding. The poet sang this to Chozhan Nedunkilli who was not politically astute, when Chozhan Nalankilli besieged Āvūr and Chozhan Nedunkilli was hiding inside his palace
Do or Die; Kshatriya Dharma
Two Choza kings were fighting with one another, and the poet Kovur Kizar asked the hiding Nedunkilli Choza to come out and fight or accept defeat. This reminds us of Bhagavad Gita where Krishna points out to Arjuna to get up and fight. That is the Kshatriya Dharma.
“Do not yield to this degrading impotence, O son of Pṛthā! It does not become you. Give up such petty weakness of heart and arise, O chastiser of the enemy!”

War time woes
We see a lot of bad things happening in the Middle East where common folk suffer more than fighters. This is what happened in ancient Tamil Nadu as well. Chera, Choza, Pandyas fought with one another.People suffered a lot, says the poet.
Women and children were suffering. Even animals could not enjoy normal life.
In the Ukraine- Russia War and the Middle East war thousands of cats and dogs were abandoned or killed. Public had to live in shelters fearing bomb explosions every hour.
Now we know that it has been going on for over 2000 years. History repeats itself.
Even in the Dharma Yuddha during the epic period, we hear how moral codes were violated. At the end of Mahabharata war, Pandavas lost all their children and grand children when three of the Kaurava survivors set fire to the Pandava army tents. Only one in the womb of a pregnant Pandava woman survived to continue the Kuru Vamsa.
பால் இல் குழவி அலறவும் – and babies without milk crying, மகளிர் – women, பூ இல் – without flowers, வறுந்தலை முடிப்பவும் – and tying hair without oil, நீர் இல் வினை புனை நல் இல் இனைகூஉக் கேட்பவும் – and hearing the sad sounds of women in finely made houses without water

Courage of the Poets
Nowadays even journalists are afraid to write what is right and what is wrong. Unlike Lord Krishna, Kovur Kizar was just a poet. But in those days poets and saints acted without any fear or favour. They were not selfish like modern day journalists.

(War time woes)
The male elephants cannot go to the huge reservoirs to bathe with their females, nor have they been fed mashed rice mixed with ghee, and so they lean on their strong posts with perfect bases, bending them, distressed, their trunks rolling on the ground as they sigh with hot breaths and trumpet like thunder.
Babies scream without milk, women tie their bare hair without flowers and wailing sounds are heard from fine, well-constructed houses that have no water. It is cruel for you to linger here,

(Kshatriya Dhama- Do or Die)
O Greatness with powerful horses whose strengths are hard to measure! If you are righteous, open the gates and tell him that it is his. If you live by martial laws, open and fight!
If you are without righteousness or martial courage and just hide on one side within your high walls, your door with sturdy headers closed, it is cause for shame!

Fearless poet Kovur Kizar points out that both kings belonged to the same Choza Vamsa/lineage. It is like two brothers fighting. This shows the condition of ancient Tamil Nadu where brotherly fighting continued for over 1500 years. In other parts of the world such a thing happened only for a few hundred years.

You are the heir of him who removed not just the anguish of a dove, but also wiped away many other sorrows. They descend from men who shared with others and ate, who, fearing the poverty of wise men, gave cool shade to them.
These children with parched heads who cried looking at the elephant have forgotten to cry now, and eye the new crowds with bewildered looks. They have this new distress. You have heard what I had to say! Do what you may!

Saved another poet
Here is an interesting anecdote to show the power and influence of ancient Tamil poets. Kovur Kizar saved one poet who was dubbed as a spy of enemy king.
A poet named Ilanthathan came from Chozhan Nalankilli who was besieging Uraiyur. Chozhan Nedunkilli thought he was a spy and was going to kill him. Poet Kovūr Kizhār sang this and saved him

Item 435 Poet’s Life
To save a comrade, Kovur Kizar says what his comrades do. Here we see a beautiful description of the life and role of a Tamil Poet. They were honest, kind and selfless people.
Here is what he says about a poet,
“being happy for what is given to them, eating without saving and giving to others without holding back, is the sad life of those in need. Is this life harmful to others?”

Another interesting thing is the name of the poet
Poikai means a tank , a water source.
Of the 12 Alvars, Tamil Viaishnavite poets, early three were called Muthal Muuvar – First Three. One of them is Poikai Alvar. So that Alvar musrt have lived nearer to Sangam period. The reason for my guess is that we rarely find this name.

Another interesting thing is the word Iraivan
The poet called his patron king Iraivan, which means God. Nowadays this is used for Gods only.
In the ancient Tamil world , words like Kovil, Iraivan were used for King, his palace etc., because Hindus considered king as God.அவன் எம் இறைவன்
Puranānūru 48, Poet Poykaiyār sang for Cheraman Kōkōthai Mārpan,
Thondi with groves has honey fragrance from the garlands worn by Kōthai, those worn by his wives, and the waterlilies blooming in the vast backwaters.
That is my town. He is my king. Think of me, O man of ancient wisdom who seeks patrons. If you go to him, tell him “I saw the man who sang your praises when you were victorious in battle”.

Puram verse 49 is skipped; nothing interesting is found.
Puram verse 50 by Mosikeeranar has an interesting anecdote.
(When poet Mōsi Keeranār climbed unknowingly on the bed of the royal drum, he woke up only to find the king fanning him. This king is the son of the Chera king Selvakkadunkō Valiyāthan for whom Kapilar wrote Pathitruppathu 61-70 and Puranānūru 8 and 14. Pathitruppathu poems 71-80 were written by the poet Arisil Kizhār for this king. Thakadur is modern Dharmapuri, and that is where the king defeated Athiyan Ezhini (Athiyamān Nedumān Anji). Mōsi Keeranār wrote Puranānūru 50, 154, 155, 156 and 186)
A poet by name Mosikeeran was very tired when he arrived at the king’s palace. There was the palace drum decorated with flowers and fine cloths; the poet mistaking it for a bed climbed it and lied on the drum. The king came to know that someone showed disrespect to his royal symbol. When he approached the place, he was informed that person was a tired poet sleeping there. Without becoming angry and without disturbing the poet’s sleep, he fanned him with the royal fan.
In Tamil Nadu Royal Drum, Royal Tree, Royal emblems and Royal Umbrella were respected as King himself. Anyone showing disrespect to it, will lose his life. Here we see a quite opposite action.
This will remind anyone of another incident. King Raja Raja Choza lived 1000 years ago. He built the famous Thanjavur Big Shiva Temple. While the construction was going on Rajaraja came to supervise the work. The sculptors always chew the betel leaves and supari (betel nuts) and spit the waste out. To save the sanctity of the place an attendant used to hold a cup or bowl to get the spit. When the king came, the attendant of the chief sculptor was absent for some minutes. When the sculptor wanted to spit the betel waste King Rajaraja himself held the bowl and received it. Sculptors never remove their eyes from the stone they are sculpting; so he did not even see the king. Only when hus attendant came back the chief sculptor knew it was the mighty Choza king who served as his servant for some time. He profusely apologised but the king felt very happy to see the astute care the sculptor was showing in his work.

The poet finds a reason for the king’s action. Since the king was a Tamil scholar he gave that much respect to the poet. Such is the value of Tamil language.

Is it because you knew that in the upper world there is room only for those who lived in this earth with soaring fame?
Hindus believe that those who meritorious things on earth only will get a place in the heaven.

1 Before it was brought back from washing, the fierce, dark wood drum, tightly tied with long leather straps, that hungers for blood, decorated with dense, long feathers with bright spots belonging to peacocks, sapphire strands, and flowers of ulignai vines that have gold colored tender leaves, I climbed on its delicate flower bed, as soft as the foam on oil, in ignorance. You did not chop me into pieces in anger,

because of your great knowledge of fine Thamizh. Not satisfied with that, you came close to me and fanned me with your strong arms that are like drums, to keep me cool.

“O crazy one, don’t you hear the sound of the sparrows flocking together
and calling “keech, keech” everywhere?
The cowherd women with fragrant hair and many ornaments
are churning the yogurt. Don’t you hear their sound?
You are a queen of the cowherd village.
How can you sleep when you hear people
singing the praise of Kesavan?
You shine brightly! Open the door.
Let us go and worship our Pāvai.”

Did you not hear, Oh slow witted girl, The twittering sound of black birds of the morn, Which sounds like a talk between them, Did you not hear the tingling sound, When the big and small coin like pendants, Rub against each other, Did you not hear the sound of vigouros pull, Of the curd churner being pulled, By the flower bedecked cow herdesses, Did you not hear the sound of twirling curd, When churned using the mixer, Oh, leader among girls, How can you sleep, When they sing the names sweetly. Of Narayana[16] and Kesava[17], Oh, She who is sparkling, Be pleased to open the door, And worship our goddess Pavai.

481. The girls come to wake up their friend. They say,
“The east is growing bright
and the buffaloes leave their small sheds and go to graze.
Women are about to do their nombu,
but we have stopped them so they will wait for you
and we have come to wake you up.
Get up, cheerful one!
If we sing his praise wishing to get the Paṛai
and worship the god of gods who split open the mouth
of the Asuran Kesi when he came as a horse
and fought with the wrestlers and defeated them,
he will give us his grace.
That would be a wonderful thing.
Let us go and worship our Pāvai.”

The eastern sky has become white, The buffalos are free to walk and graze, The remaining lasses, have stopped from going, All those who wanted to go, And have come to call you, Oh girl filled with happiness, Please wake up. Let us all sing and get gifts, From Him who has killed the horse like ogre[18], By pulling apart his mouth, From Him who killed the wrestlers [19], Sent to kill him, From the Narayana, who is first among the Gods, And prostrate before him.. Please hear what we tell. And decide for yourself, And worship our Goddess Pavai

Before gives milk plods to graze the field, Lo!

482. The girls come to wake up their friends. They say,
“O my uncle’s daughter, it is morning
and still you are sleeping on your bed in your room
where the fragrance of incense spreads everywhere
and the lamps on all sides of the palace
studded with pure jewels shine.
Open your beautiful door.
O aunts, won’t you wake her up?
Doesn’t your daughter speak? Doesn’t she hear?
Has some magic put her into deep sleep?
Let us praise the god singing his many names,
saying ‘You are the Māyan, Madhavan, Vaikuṇṭan!’
Let us go and worship our Pāvai.”

Oh my uncle’s daughter, who sleeps, In the soft cotton bed, In the pearl filled Villa, Well lit from all sides, And full of the smoke of incense, Please open the ornamental door. Oh aunt, why don’t you wake her up, Is your daughter dumb or deaf, Or down right lazy, Or she is in trance of deep pleasurable sleep, Let us all call him the great enchanter, Madhavan[20] and he who lives in Vaikunta[21], By several of His names, And get benefited, And worship the Goddess Pavai.

Mansion studded with pure precious stones
Wicks of light all around gleaming
Asleep a couch perfume afloat;
Thou, uncle’s daughter , unlock the door bedecked
Auntie, would you arouse her ?
Is your daughter dumb, deaf, lazy and dreaming ?
Accurs’d to a grand sleep with a sentry ?
Extol Him as Madhava,
Great hypnotist Mukuntha
And so forth chant the Vaigunta;

What is the distance between you and the God?

Narada is a great sage. He is devoted to Lord Narayana who is the protector of Universe according to the Hindu religion.
All the scriptures says that Narayana resides at Vaikunda, a sacred place in the sky.
Once Narada went to Vaikunda, where Narayana is supposed to be dwells.
But to his surprise Narada did not see the Lord, there!
He started searching the Lord.
At that time one devotee came in front of him.
He asked Narada, “oh! Great sage, wherefrom you are coming?”
Narada replied to him that he is coming from Vaikunda. He also said that he did not see the Lord at Vaikunda and in search of him he is wandering:’
The devotee laughed at him.
“Oh! Great sage! You do not know where he is. He is at a calling distance,” said the devotee.
Narada was wonderstruck.
He told the devotee that he is not able to understand the meaning of his words.
The devotee said, “It is simple. He is at a distance to hear your call. When the elephant Gajendra called “Oh, the Origin of everything”, he heard that call and immediately came to the elephant’s rescue.
Actually, the elephant’s leg was grabbed by a crocodile in a river and at any moment it may be dragged into the river.
Similarly, the Pandavas Queen Draupadi called him, “Oh, my lord who is dwelling in my heart. Pl come and rescue me. The wretched Gaurav Dussasana is stripping my sari.”
On hearing Draupadi’s call he came immediately to her rescue and started supplying numerous saris.
Telling all these things the devotee asked Narada, “I hope now you understand where he would be. Go and find him in devotees’ assembly.
Narada accordingly found the Lord in a large gathering where devotees were chanting His name.
Narada finding the Lord there prostrated before Him.
Narada told the Lord that he is coming from Vaikund in search of him.
The Lord laughed at him and said the famous reply.
“I am not residing at Vaikunda nor at the yogi’s heart. Wherever my devotees are chanting my name, oh, Narada, you may find me there.
Narada understood the power of the devotion.
God is in your heart and that is the distance between you and the God!

Kumaresa Satakam is an 18th-century Tamil literary work consisting of 100 poems (stanzas) praising Lord Muruga (Kumaresan), often attributed to the poet Gurupatha Dasar. It is a didactic text that offers profound insights into life, human nature, and morals through maxims and proverbs. Following is a rough translation of the Tamil verses.

Effects of Kaliyuga (Iron Age): Children not following the advice of their mother. They fight with their respectable father; their guru is being insulted. People don’t think about the real God.

March 5 Thursday Effects of Kaliyuga (Iron Age) : Ghost like people are hailed as Gods. People hear to the wife shouting and scolding them. Words of the wise people are neglected.

Saints always think about liberation (Moksha); wise men think about Dharma/rules and regulations; ruler think about the welfare of the people.

Sex maniacs always think about women; frauds think about cheating the public; businessmen think about gains; farmers think about their fields; prostitutes target the wealthy; students think about their education; honourable people expect respect. I (author of the verse) always think about Lord Kumara/Skanda.

Prostitutes lack truth; thieves have no relatives; poor never think about prostitutes; rude people lack love and affection.

Rulers lack gratitude; mlechas/foreigners lack character. Lovers lack shyness; good hearted devotees don’t care about rules for worship; poets lack enemies (all are their friends).

A ruler is the one who follows the Raja Dharma (established rules); a minister is the statesman who gives proper advice; a hero is the one who does not care about his life.

A poet is the person who knows the prosody and old literature; a doctor is the one who has learnt the medical books and the anatomy; a wiseman is the person who has full control over his five senses.

Better to have intercourse with your wife twice a month; and that woman should have black hair (don’t go to bed with her when she becomes grey haired) one should have oil bath twice a week.

Take laxatives to clean your stomach twice a year.
Have curd, butter milk, ghee, hot milk and tender coconut water every day.

Murderers, and those who left their parents in a miserable state also go to hell. Cowards who let their kings down in the battlefield go to hell; so do students who violated teacher’s command.

Those who have illegal intimacy with others’ wives, and those who show ingratitude to the people who provided them food fall in hell.

Those who denigrate gods and saints fall into hell; so do who insult the devotees of Lord Siva.
Liars and the people who covet others’ properties fall into hell.

Qualities of Great men are like Gold which does not change even when it is melted; lie sandal wood which gives fragrance even when it is rubbed hard; they are like white conches which remains white even when it is burnt.

Qualities of Great men are like milk which tastes good even when it is heated and they are like iron weapons which shine even when they are put in grindstone.

Daytime shines because of sun; Night time becomes bright due to moon; land becomes fertile due to rain; in the same way husband becomes great because of his wife.

A horse gets appreciated because of its speed; citizens are protected by the king; character makes one beauty; music becomes perfect with tuning box; human body becomes beautiful because of healthy food

Sweet words are the sign of compassion; giving makes one famous; flowers are liked because of its fragrance; happiness makes face bright; Yagas are made great by Vedic chanting; truth makes the words respectful.

Place of birth is immaterial; it won’t make one great: even when crows are born in beautiful gardens, they could not become cuckoos; even when weeds are grown in flowerpots, they are not considered flowers.

Place of birth is immaterial; it won’t make one great: when rabbits are born in forest, they are not equal to calves of elephants; even if snails have shells, they are not used as conches; even when dullards born in a wiseman’s family he is not considered wise. Avatars
Avataara means a descent. The incarnation of a deity, especially of Vishnu. The origin of avatara is in the Rig Veda. Three steps of Vishnu, Varaha Avatara in the story of Emusha are in the Vedas. Flood story of Matsya Avatara is in all cultures around the world.
Boar incarnation is in Taitriya Samhita and Satapata Brahmana of Yajur Veda.
Kurma/ Tortoise Avatara is in Satapatha Brahmana as Prajapati assuming a form of Tortoise.
Matsya/Fish Incarnation
Fish Avatara is also in the same Brahmana book in the story of deluge. Manu found a small fish which grew to a large size which he left in the ocean. It directed him to construct a ship, Manu fastened the vessel to the horn of the huge fish. All boarded the ship and the fish/ Matsya Avatar saved them. Mahabharata repeated the story with some variations.
Kurma/Tortoise Avatara and the Churning of the Milky Ocean
The germ of this Avatara is Satapata Brahmana book. Later additions in the Puranas show Vishnu assuming the tortoise form. In the Satya Yuga, he placed himself at the bottom of the ocean of milk and made his back the base or pivot of the Mandara Mountain. The gods and demons twisted the great serpent Vasuki round the mountain and dividing into two parties, each took an end of the snake as a rope and thus churned the ocean until they recovered the desired objects.

Lakshmi- Goddess of Fortune and Walth;
Suraa- Goddess of Wine;
Chandra- the Moon;
Rambha- Apsaras beauty;
Uchchaisrvas- Divine Horse;
Kaustuba- a celebrated jewel;
Parijata- paarijaata- a Celestial Tree;
Surabhi- Divine cow of Plenty;
Airavata- Elephant;
Sankha/ Conch- Conch of Victory;
Dhanus- a famous bow;
Visha/Poison.
Lord Siva devoured the poison to save Devas and demons, but his wife Parvati prevented it going down his gullet. When it was stopped at his neck/throat, that became blue in colour. So Siva was called Neelakanta (Blue throated). This name is in the Vedas and 2300 year old Sangam Tamil literature.
All these avataras were sung by Tamil saints. And many of them are in Tamil Sangam books. That shows all the Hindus from Himalayas to Kanyakumari were very familiar with Hindu Puranas.

Narasimha – man lion –avatara is more popular than Varaha avatara. in Tamil he is known as Singa Perumal.
The story of this incarnation of Vishnu is as follows:
Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakasipu were two demon brothers, hostile to Vishnu. Hiranyaksha was killed by Varaha avatar. Hiranyakasipu, then became the king of the demons and vowed eternal war with Vishu. His young son, Prahlada, was however became a devotee of Vishnu. Hiranyakasipu tried all means to change his mind, but in vain. Exasperated with this he asked the young boy, if his god Vishnu was all pervasive, could be found in the pillar in front of him; and then hacked it with his sword. The pillar cleft in twine and oust burst from it to the astonishment of Hiranyakasipu, the angry god in the shape of a Man-Lion. He tore to pieces the impious demon king. He was called Ugra Narasimha.
His anger subsided after Prahlada’s prayer; then he became Lakshmi Narasimha.
Yoga Narasimha is another form in which the god is seen squatting in a meditative mood. Simhachalam, Ahobilam , Namakkal, Narasimham near Madurai, Singa Perumal kovil are some of the places sacred to Narasimha. The usual Vaishnava symbols Sankha and Chakra are seen in his upper arms. The monolithic Ugra Narasimha found in the ruins of Vijayanagara was established by Krishna Deva Raya in 1528 CE. Statues of Narasimha are found on mountain tops, caves and deep forests. He has four hands.

VAMANA / TRIVIKRAMA AVATAR
Vamana, the dwarf incarnation of Vishnu, is worshipped as Trivikrama – in Tamil Ulgalantha Perumal. Trivikrama means ‘god who took three strides’. Tamil name means ‘the lord who measured the universe’ (with three strides).
The story is a powerful demon king named Bali, the great grandson of Hiranyakasipu conquered the three worlds and ruled them, in spite of his birth, in charity and with justice. Indra, the chief of devas, was thus superseded. Devas got alarmed and requested Vishnu to restore Indra to his legitimate position.
Vishnu could not go to war against Bali, as he was a virtuous king. So, he went in the guise of a dwarf Brahmana, as a Brahmachari, Vedic student. He begged of Bali for three feet of land on which he could sit and meditate on God undisturbed. The generous Bali granted the request. Then the dwarf grows to a height transcending the world, take in at one step the whole earth, covering the sky with the next, and demanding of Bali to show him room for the third. True to his promise, Bali offered his own head, on which the placed his foot and sent him down to lower regions. Because he was just, he was allowed to return to his kingdom every year. That day is celebrated even today.
At Tirukkovilur in Tamil Nadu is a celebrated shrine of Trivikrama. Another one is in the Ulagalanda Perumal temple at Kanchi. Mahabalipuram has one figure with eight hands. Brahma is also shown touching the finger of the god.
In the Ramaswami temple in Kumbakonam is a sculptured pillar on which the story of Vamana avatar is well represented.
Representations of Vamana figures with water pot and an umbrella are found in the demarcation stones of fields granted in charity.
A festival in honour of Bali is observed by the people of Mysore on the first day after Deepavali Amavasya.
In Kerala, people connect Bali with their harvest festival, the Onam, in which they worship a clay figure of this high-minded emperor. It is supposed that the king is permitted by Vishnu to visit every year the fair earth over which he ruled once and to satisfy himself that the people are quite happy and glad as in his time.

KALKI AVATAR
Kalki avatar is only a prospective incarnation in which the god is expected to appear as a powerful hero riding on a white horse- back, a sword in hand, to suppress the growing wickedness of the Mlechchas (anti Hindu elements).

BUDDHA
The Buddha avatar is a later addition by Jayadeva of Orissa and so Hindus don’t worship him. No deity of Buddha is found in any old Hindu temple.
Apart from these avataras , lord Vishnu is depicted in various forms in ancient Hindu temples.

RAMA and KRISHNA
Most popular avataras Rama and Krishna are worshipped throughout India. All their leelas or their victories over demons are shown in paintings and sculptures. Since all these are in epics and Puranas, most of the people know the stories behind them.
In Sangam Tamil literature even the Yamnua River and Gopikas episode is sung by a poet. Untold stories of Rama are found in Sangam Tamil books.
Over 20 Avataras are mentioned in the Puranas. But only ten are called Dasaavataaraas (Dasa= Ten)

PARASURAMA
Three Ramas were sung by the saints: Dasaratha Rama, husband of Sita; Balaraman- brother of Krishna and Parasuraman- Rama with axe on his shoulder. He was born as the son of Jamadagni in Treta Yuga. He fought with arrogant Kshatriyas and finished their domination. But he bowed to Rama, a Kshatriya, and gave all his strength to him.
