1.வீரம்
மரப்புலி உடலின், மான்கணம் உளவோ?
மருளின விசும்பின் மாதிரத்து ஈண்டிய
இருளும் உண்டோ, ஞாயிறு சினவின்? ( மன்னன் வீரம்; ஔவையார், புறம் 90)

2.எலி போல திருடும் குணம் உடையாருடன் சேராதே
எலிமுயன்றனையராகி உள்ளதம்
வளன்வலியுறுக்கும் உளம் இலாளரோடு
இயைந்த கேண்மை இல்லாகியரோ ! –(எலி போன்றோருடன் சேராதே; நல்லுருத்திரன், புறம் 190)

3.வழுதியின் ஆற்றல்: கடலுக்கு அணை போட முடியுமா?

நீர்மிகின் சிறையும் இல்லை; தீ மிகின்
மன்னுயிர் நிழற்றும் இலை;
வளிமிகின் வலியும் இல்லை! – (வழுதியின் ஆற்றல்; ஐயூர் முடவனார், புறம் 51)

4.முடிந்தால் சொல்லு, சொல்லியபின் செய்யாமல் இராதே
ஒல்லுவது ஒல்லும் என்றலும், யாவர்க்கும்
ஒல்லாது இல்லென மறுத்தலும், இரண்டும்
ஆள்வினை மருங்கின் கேண்மைப் பாலே;
ஒல்லாது ஒல்லும் என்றலும், ஒல்லுவது

5.சான்றோர் சன்றோருடன் சேருவர்
என்றும் சான்றோர்
சான்றோர் பாலர் ஆப;
சாலார் சாலார் பாலர் ஆகுபவே ! – (இனம் இனத்தோடு சேரும்; கண்ணகனார், புறம் 218)

6.மனைவி இறந்தாள், இன்னும் வாழ்கிறேனே! சீ,சீ!!
ஞாங்கர் மாய்ந்தனள் மடந்தை
இன்னும் வாழ்வல் என் இதன் பண்பே! –(மனைவி போயும் இன்னும் உயிர் இருக்கிறதே! சேரமான் மாக்கோதை, புறம் 245)

7.கணவனுடன் இறப்பதே மேல்
பெருந்தோள் கணவன் மாய்ந்தென, அரும்பற
வள்ளிதழ் அவிழ்ந்த தாமரை
நள்ளிரும் பொய்கையும் தீயும் ஓரற்றே! – ( கணவன் சிதைத்தீயில் குதிப்பது குளத்தில் குளிப்பது போல; பெருங்கோப்பெண்டு, புறம் 245)

8.சீ! உன்னை விட்டால் கதி இல்லை என்று எண்ணாதே!
பெரிதே உலகம் பேணுநர் பலரே
மீளிமுன்பின் ஆளிபோல
உள்ளம் உள்ளவிந்தடங்காது வெள்ளென
நோவா தோன்வயின் திரங்கி
வாயா வன்கனிக்கு உலமருவாரே – ( உலகில் கொடுப்போர் அதிகம்; பெருஞ்சித்திரனார், புறம் 207)

9.நீ இருக்கும் வரை இனி நான் கூலிக்கு மாரடிக்கத் தேவை இல்லை
பீடில் மன்னர்ப் புகழ்ழ்ச்சி வேண்டி
செய்யா கூறிக் கிளத்தல்
எய்யாதாகின்று எம்சிறு செந்நாவே! – (வாரி வழங்குகிறாய் மற்றவர்களைப் பொய்யாகப் புகழத்தேவையே இல்லை; வன் பரணர், புறம் 148)

10. பார்! மற்றவன் கொடுத்த யானை!
இரவலர் புரவலர் நீயும் அல்லை
புரவலர் இரவலர்க்கு இல்லையுமல்லர்
இரவலர் உண்மையும் காணினி இரவலர்க்கு
ஈவோருண்மையும் காணினி நின்னூர்க்
கடிமரம் வருந்தத் தந்தியாம் பிணித்த
நெடுநல் யானையெம் பரிசில்
கடுமான் தோன்றல் செல்வல் யானே- – (உலகில் கொடுப்போர் அதிகம்; பெருஞ்சித்திரனார், புறம் 162)

11.காசுக்காகப் பாடும் பரதேசி நான் அல்ல!
காணாது ஈத்தவிப் பொருட்கு யானோர்
வாணிகப் பரிசிலன் அல்லேன் பேணித்
தினையனைத்தாயினும் இனிதவர்
துணை யளவறிந்து நல்கினர் விடினே – (காசுக்காகப் பாடும் ஆள் அல்ல; பெருஞ்சித்திரனார், புறம் 208

12..உண்டோ குரங்கேற்றுக் கொள்ளாத கொம்பு?
எத்திசைச் செலினும் அத்திசைச் சோறே –
( உன்னை விடக் கொடுப்போர் உண்டு; அவ்வையார், புறம் 206)

13.பிச்சை எடுப்பது இழிந்ததுதான்
ஈயென இரத்தல் இழிந்தன்று அதனெதிர்
ஈயெனென்றல் அதனினுமிழிந்தன்று
கொள்ளெனக் கொடுத்தல் உயர்ந்தன்று அதனெதிர்
கொள்ளேனென்றல் அதனினும் உயர்ந்தன்று – ( தா என்பது இழிந்தது; வன்பரணர், புறம் 204)

14.நல்லவரை மட்டுமே பாடுவேன்
பெரியவோதினும் சிறியவுணராப்
பீடின்று பெருகிய திருவிற்
பாடின் மன்னரைப் பாடன்மார் எமரே – (தகுதியற்றவரைப் பாடமாட்டோம்; மோசிகீரனார், புறம் 375)

15.புலவரைப் போய் உளவாளி என்று மடக்கிவிட்டாயே!
பெற்றது கொண்டு சுற்றமருத்தி
ஓம்பாது உண்டு கூம்பாது வீசி
வரிசைக்கு வருந்துமிப் பரிசில் வாழ்க்கை
பிறர்க்குத் தீதறிந்தன்றோ இன்றே – ( புலவர் வாழ்க்கை;கோவூர்க் கிழார் புறம் 47)

16.வரி விதிக்கும் போது அளவாக வரி விதி
அறிவுடை வேந்தன் நெறியறிந்து கொளினே
கோடியாத்து நாடு பெரிது நந்தும் – (வரி விதிப்பு; பிசிராந்தையார், புறம் 184)

17.கோள் சொல்பவரை நம்பாதே
வழிபடுவோரை வல்லறிதி நீயே
பிறர்பழி கூறுவோர் மொழி தேறலையே
நீமெய்கண்ட குற்றம் காணின்
ஒப்ப நாடி அத்தகவொறுத்தி – (கோள் சொல்பவரை ஒதுக்கி, குற்றவாளிகளை தண்டிப்பாய்; ஊன்பொதி பசுங்குடையார், புறம் 10

18.உழவர்களைப் போற்று
நொதுமலாளர் பொது மொழி கொள்ளாது
பகடு புறந்தருநர் பாரமோம்பிக்
குடிபுறந் தருவை யாயினின்
அடிபுறந் தருகுவர் அடங்காதோரே – (உழவரை ஆதரி; வெள்ளைக்குடி நாகனார், புறம் 35)

19.பரித்ராணாய சாதூனாம் விநாசாய துஷ்க்ருதாம் (தீயோரைப் பொசுக்கு)
கொடியோர்த் தெறுதலும் செவ்வியோர்க் களித்தலும்
ஒடியா மரபின் மடிவிலையாகி
நல்லதன் நலனும் தீயதன் தீமையும்
இல்லையென்பார்க்கு இனனாகிலியர்—( கொடியோரை அழி; நாத்திகரை நம்பாதே; முதுகண்ணன் சாத்தனார், புறம் 29)

20.இன்று போல் என்றும் ஒன்றுபட்டு வாழ்க
ஒருவீர் ஒருவீர்க்கு ஆற்றுதிர் இருவீரும்
உடநிலை திரியீராயின் இமிழ்திரைப்
பௌவ முடுத்தவிப் பயங்கெழு மாநிலம்
கையகப் படுவது பொய்யாகாதே – (ஒற்றுமை வாழ்க; காரிக்கண்ணனார், புறம் 58)

21.நினைத்தேன், வந்தாய்! என்ன அதிசயம்!
வருவன் என்ற கோனது பெருமையும்
அது பழுதின்றி வந்தவன் அறிவும்
வியத்தொறும் வியத்தொறும் வியப்பிறந்தன்றே – பொத்தியார், புறம் 217

22.குழல் இனிது, யாழ் இனிது என்பர், குழந்தை இல்லார்
குறுகுறு நடந்து, சிறுகை நீட்டி,
இட்டும் தொட்டும் கவ்வியும் துழந்தும்
நெய்யுடை அடிசில் மெய்ப்பட விதிர்த்தும்
மயக்குறுமக்களை இல்லோர்க்குப்
பயக்குறை இல்லைத் தாம் வாழும் நாளே! – (குழந்தைகள் இல்லாத வாழ்வு இன்பம் தராது; அறிவுடைநம்பி, புறம் 188).

23.ஈமக்கடன் நிகழ்த்த புதல்வன் பெற்ற பின் என்னிடம் வா!
புகழ்சால் புதல்வன் பிறந்தபின் வாவென
என்னிவணொழித்த அன்பிலாள
எண்ணாதிருக்குவை யல்லை
என்னிடம் யாதுமற் றிசைவெய் யோயே பொத்தியார், புறம் 222

24.தைரியம் இருந்தால் போர் செய் அல்லது கோட்டையைத் திற
அறவையாயின் நினதெனத் திறத்தல்
மறவையாயின் போரொடு திறத்தல்
அறவையும் மறவையும் அல்லையாகி
திறவா தடைத்த திண்ணிலைக் கதவின்
நீண்மதில் ஒருசிறை யொடுங்குதல்
நாணுத் தகவுடைத்துக் காணுங்காலே – புறம் 44, கோவூர்க் கிழார்

புறநானூற்றுப்பாடல்களில் இருந்து எடுக்கப்பட்ட 30 அருமையான மேற்கோள்கள் இந்த மாத காலண்டரை அலங்கரிக்கின்றன. சுருக்கமான பொருள் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஜூன் 1 ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமை
நிலம் பெயரினும் நின்சொற் பெயரல் (உண்மையே கொள்கை – இரும்பிடர்த்தலையார், புறம் 3).

ஜூன் 2 திங்கட்கிழமை
அருளும் அன்பும் நீக்கி, நீங்கா
நிரயம் கொள்பவரோடு ஒன்றாது, காவல்
குழவி கொள்பவரின் ஓம்புமதி
– — (கெட்டவருடன் சேராதே; நரிவெரூஉத் தலையார், புறம் 5)

ஜூன் 3 செவ்வாய்க் கிழமை
நீரின்றமையா யாக்கைக் கெல்லாம்
உண்டி கொடுத்தோர் உயிர் கொடுத்தோரே – (அன்னதானமே சிறந்தது; குடபுலவியனார், புறம் 18).

ஜூன் 4 புதன் கிழமை
இகழுநர் இசையொடு மாயப்
புகழொடு விளங்கிப் பூக்கநின் வேலே – (உன்னை மதியாதோர் வீழ்க; நீ வாழ்க; ஐயூர் மூலங்கிழார். புறம் 21.)

ஜூன் 5 வியாழக் கிழமை
வல்லுநர் வாழ்ந்தோர் என்ப – (வல்லவரே வாழ்வர்; மாங்குடி கிழார், புறம் 24)

ஜூன் 6 வெள்ளிக்கிழமை
புலவர் பாடும் புகழுடையோர் விசும்பின்
வலவன் ஏவா வானவூர்தி
எய்துப,என்ப (புகழுடையோர் சுவர்க்கம் புகுவர்; முதுகண்ணன் சாத்தனார், புறம் 27)

ஜூன் 7 சனிக்கிழமை
தேய்தல் உண்மையும் பெருகல் உண்மையும்
மாய்தல் உண்மையும் , பிறத்தல் உண்மையும்
அறியாதோரை அறியக்காட்டி – (ஜனன,மரண சுழற்சியை விளக்குவாய்; முதுகண்ணன் சாத்தனார் புறம் 27)

அதனால் அறமும் பொருளும் இன்பமும் மூன்றும்
ஆற்றும் பெருமநின் செல்வம் – (தர்ம, அர்த்த, காம ஆகிய மூன்றில் நிற்பவன் நீ; முதுகண்ணன் சாத்தனார், புறம் 28)

சிறப்புடை மரபிற் பொருளும் இன்பமும்
அறத்து வழிப்படூஉம் – (தர்ம, அர்த்த, காம ஆகிய மூன்றில் தர்மமே பெரிது; கோவூர் கிழார், புறம் 31)

நிலம்புடை பெயர்வதாயினும், ஒருவன்
செய்தி கொன்றோர்க்கு உய்தி இல் – (நன்றி மறக்காதே; ஆலத்தூர் கிழார், புறம் 34)

வருபடை தாங்கிப் பெயர்புறத் தார்த்துப்
பொருபடை தரூஉங் கொற்றமும் உழுபடை
ஊன்றுசால் மருங்கின் ஈன்றதன் பயனே! – (உழவே பெரிது; வெள்ளைக்குடி நாகனார், புறம் 35)

Vedic Poet Medhathithi’s Quotations

Rig Veda, the oldest religious scripture in the world, is full of mysteries. Even the foreign “scholars” who tried to translate the hymns very often added in the foot note, “the meaning is not clear”, “the meaning is obscure” etc. Some deliberately misinterpreted the hymns to suit their fanciful Aryan-Dravidian Race theories and sex fantasies. One must always read what Indian saints like Shankaracharya, Dayananda Saraswati, Sayana and Bhatta Baskara say about Vedas. We must respect our mother, father, Guru and what they have believed in the past thousands of years. The Vedic sages said they love to speak in mysterious language. Some hymns may be allegorical, some may be symbolic, some may be open statements and others may be in coded language.

The hymns 12 to 23 in the First Mandala are ascribed to sage Medhathithi, Son of Kanva. Following are some of the quotations from his hymns:

1.Fire kindles fire and so does poetry, youth and home life (RV 1-12-6 & 1-14-7)

2.The Valiant perishes not (1-18-4)

3.He is longing to send fortune to those who deserve (1-17-6)

(This reminds us of Truth and Beauty sung by Keats and Sweetness and Light sung by Mathew Arnold; also Satyam, Sivam, Sundaram by Hindi poet Jai Shankar Prasad, great poet of Bengal Rabindranath Tagore; and in the recent days propagated by Sri Sathya Sai Baba)

133 Beautiful Quotations (Subhashitas) of Playwright Bhasa – Part 1

(Earlier on 18th April 2014, I posted under the title “Beautiful quotations from a Great Playwright”; Post No. 987. Following post is more comprehensive and 133 quotations are arranged subject wise.)

Bhasa was one of the greatest playwrights of India. Even Kalidasa, the greatest playwright and poet of India praised him. He has written 13 Sanskrit dramas and Svapna vasavadatta is his best. He lived during the period of Nanda dynasty around fifth century BCE.

Following are his thirteen dramas of Bhasa: Abhiseka Nataka, Avi maraca, Urubhanga, Karnabhara, Carudatta, Duta Katotkaca, Duta Vakya, Panca Ratra, Pratijna Yugandharayana, Pratima Nataka, Bala Carita, Madhyama or Haidimba Vaidagya and Svapna Vasavadatta.

In all these plays the poet has employed nearly 230 characters, male and female, besides many others that are only mentioned.

There are 23 different metres and the total number of verses is 1092. There are thirteen Prakrit verses in these plays in six different metres. His dramas are in Sanskrit prose.

Following quotations (Wise Sayings) are compiled by A S Panchapakesa Ayyar in his book on Bhasa published in 1957. When we know that all these were said 2400 years ago, we admire it more. This is our age old Sanskrit Wisdom:–

GOD
1.God owns everything in the universe, but keeps nothing for himself; He is the supreme renouncer.
2.God is our soul refuge, there is no other refuge. He is the plot, the prologue and the epilogue of the ceaseless drama of the universe and the stage manager too. His scenes are ever changing in the background of Eternity.
3.Do everything to please Him and nothing to please the thousand tongued world.
4.First rate men please God; second rate men please the world; third rate men please neither.
5.God’s best form is that of the Babe; the next best is that of the Beloved; and the next best is that of the Friend. We need not bother about His other forms.
6.God is seen constantly by the wise and never by fools.
7.He is the meanest and most ungrateful of men who will not salute God, who has given him everything, including his life.

Important Vedic Quotations on Rivers & Water

It is true that almost all the civilizations appeared on the banks of the big rivers. It shows how vital water is for our survival. But for the Hindus, water is more important. Their entire life is based on water, from birth to death, and all the ceremonies use water. This is very important in debunking the Aryan migration theory. If they have lived in a very cold area like central Asia or far away in the north, the Vedas would not have so many hymns involving water in the ceremonies. Hindu or Indian civilization grew slowly on the soil of holy Ganga and expanded to holy Sindhu and Sarasvati regions. The order of rivers in the Nadhi Sukta (RV 10-75) clearly shows this east ward march of Indian civilization.

Here are some important quotations from the Hindu scriptures, from the Vedas to Manu Smriti:

Hindus invoke the seven holy rivers every day whenever and wherever they take a bath or shower. A Hindu believes that the presence of the seven sacred rivers in the water makes it holy and all his sins are washed away. He feels fresh like a flower and pure like a crystal after such a bath. The seven sacred rivers he invokes are Ganga (River Ganges), Yamuna (River Jamuna) Sindhu (River Indus), Sarasvati, Narmadha, Godavari and Kaveri. This hymn is in Ahnika Sutravali (verse 106)

Gange cha Yamune chaiva Godavari Sarasvati
Narmadhe Sindho Kaveri Jalesmin Sannidhim Kuru
–Ahnika Sutravai, Verse 106

The beauty in the above hymn is that the Hindus considered the whole country from north to the south, from east to west as one country. It shows how integrated the country was before foreigners invaded in wave after waves.

Vedic King of Indus Valley Civilization praise water

Indus Valley king Sindhudvipa was the son of Amabrisha. He is the seer for the following Vedic hymn. Brahmins recite the first three verses every day. Priests use this in full in all the house and temple consecration ceremonies. Brahmins of India do a prayer called ‘Sandhya Vandhana’ three times a day, in which they praise water as the energy giver and a healer. It begins with ‘Apo hista mayo bhuva:’….:

“Waters! You are health giving,
Give us energy, so that
We may look on great delight.

Give us a portion of the sap, the most
Beneficent you have,
Like mothers longing with love.

So gladly do we go with you
To the home for which you make us live.
Waters! Give us progeny.

Gracious be Divine waters for
our protection, be there for our drink,
and stream on us bliss and happiness.

Sovereigns over precious things,
and rulers over men, Waters!
We seek healing balm of you.

Within waters — so Soma has
Told me – all healing balms,
And Agni, benign to all.

O waters, teem with medicine to keep
My body safe from harm,
So that I long may see the sun.

Whatever sin is found in me,
whatever evil I have wrought
if I have lied or falsely sworn
waters remove it far from me.

The waters I this day have sought,
And to their moisture have we come
O Agni, rich in milk, come you, and
with your splendour cover me .”– (RV. 10-9)

Satapata Brahmana says, “Waters are indeed sacred” (Medhya va Apah S.B.1-1-1-1) and “Water is in fact nectar” (Amrtahyapah SB 3-9-4-16).

The Rig Veda has the famous Nadi sukta (River Hymn RV 10-75). The poet/ seers regarded the rivers as life bestowing, life nurturing and life protecting Divine Mothers. Till this day girls are named after those rivers. In places like Varanasi and Haridwar, they worship the river water with Arti (lamps shown to the rivers in clock wise direction). There are Puranas (mythical stories) for all the seven sacred rivers. Whenever there is a big Yaga or Temple consecration or a great sage’s birth day Hindus bring waters from 108 sacred rivers.

Banks of the rivers are regarded suitable sites for performing sacrifices (Gopatha Brahmana 1-2-14)

Offerings are made to the rivers in sacrifices (RV 1-23-18; 7-47-3). River Sarasvati is praised in scores of places. The Vedic seers invoked the rivers for their protection ( avantu ma sindhavah pinvamanh RV 6-52-4). The water is the very breaths of people (apo vai pranah SB 3-8-2-4). They are the sources of plenitude (te sindhavo varivo dhatana RV 7-47-4). They are prayed to give people nourishment and delight. (RV 10-9-1).

Manu says, “A man who gives water obtains complete satisfaction in life” (4-229)

In Tamil Literature

Two thousand year old Sangam Tamil literature praise Holy Ganga in several places and Yamuna with Gopis in another place! Powerful Chera King Chenguttuvan of second century CE came all the way to Ganges two times in his life just to wash the stone for sacred sculptures.

Tamil poet Tiruvalluvar says in the Tamil Veda Tirukkural (verse 20),
“Even as life on earth cannot sustain without water, virtue too depends ultimately on rain”. Kapilar in Natrinai (verse 1) repeats the same words.

Jerasappa Falls in Karnataka

Tamil epic Silappadikaram describes the rivers Kaveri of Choza country and Vaigai of Pandya country in beautiful verses. Paripatal, part of Sangam literature has lengthy poems in praise of River Vaigai.

Plenty of Tamil proverbs are there stressing the importance of preserving water and optimum use of water (‘Neeraiyum Seeraadu’ in Tamil).
