காந்திஜி ஆற்றிய இரண்டு மூன்று சொற்பொழிவுகளிலும், ஹரிஜன் பத்திரிகை கட்டுரைகளிலும் பிரம்மச்சர்யம் என்றால் என்ன என்று விளக்குகிறார். பதஞ்சலி முனிவர் 5 விதிகளை சொன்னார்; பின்னர் 11 விதிகளைப் பின்பறுவோர் பிரம்மச்சாரி என்று விரிவாகியது. ஆனால் ராம நாமத்தை இருதயத்தில் வைத்தால் அந்த விதிகள் எல்லாம் கொசுறு போன்றது; பயனற்றவை என்பது தெரிந்தது; இதை உருளி காஞ்சன் கிராமத்தில் இருந்த பொழுது நான் உணர்ந்தேன் என்கிறார் காந்திஜி. (மகாராஷ்டிரத்தில் புனே  அருகிலுள்ள உருளி காஞ்சன் கிராமத்தில் 1946ல் இயற்கை  வைத்திய நிலையத்தை காந்திஜி துவக்கியதையும் அது 75 ஆண்டுகளாக நடந்து வருவதையும் பற்றி சில நாட்களுக்கு முன்னர் நான் எழுதிய கட்டுரையை வாசியுங்கள்) இப்போது பிரம்மச்சர்யம் பற்றி  காந்திஜி சொல்லுவதைக் கேளுங்கள் :-

பிரம்மச்சர்யம் என்றால் என்ன ? பிரம்மன் அதாவது கடவுளை அடைய உதவும் வழிமுறை ஆகும் ; சந்ததிகளை உருவாக்கும் முறை மீது முழுக்கட்டுப்பாடு விதிப்பதாகும் . இது சொல், செயல், சிந்தனை என்ற த்ரிகரண சுத்தியுடன் கடைப்பிடிக்கப்பட வேண்டும் . சிந்தனை தாறுமாறாக ஓடினால்கூட பயனற்றுப் போகும்.

ஹிந்துஸ்தானி மொழியில் ஒரு பழமொழி உண்டு: “எவனுடைய உள்ளம் சுத்தமாக இருக்கிறதோ,  கங்கா நதியின் தூய்மை முழுதும், அவன் வீட்டிலுள்ள தண்ணீரிலும் உண்டு”. ஒருவன் எண்ணங்களைக் கட்டுப்படுத்த முடிந்தால் மற்றவை எல்லாம் சின்னக்குழந்தை விளையாட்டு போல எளிதாகிறது .என்னுடைய கணக்குப்படி பிரம்மச்சாரி நீண்டகாலம் ஆரோக்கியமாக வாழ்வான் தலைவலி கூட வராது மனதினால் உடலினால் செய்யும் வேலைகள் அவனுக்கு களைப்பை உண்டாக்காது.எப்போதும் பிரகாசமாக காட்சி தருவான்; தூங்கி வழிய மாட்டான் ; அவனுடைய சுறுசுறுப்பான வெளித் தோற்றம் அவனது உள்ளத்தின் பிரதிபலி ப்பு ஆகும்.. பகவத்  கீதையில் சொன்ன ஸ்திதப்ரக்ஞனின் எல்லா குணங்களும் அவனுக்கு இருக்கும் ; இப்படி ஒருவனுக்கு  சர்வ குணங்களும் இல்லாவிடிலும் கவலைப்படவேண்டாம் .

இதில் என்ன வியப்பு  இருக்கிறது? மனிதர்களை உருவாக்கவல்ல விந்துவை ஒருவன் கட்டுப்படுத்தி அதை சக்தியாகக் காக்கமுடியுமானால் மேற்கூறிய எல்லா குணங்களையும் காட்டுவதில் வியப்பே இல்லை.ஒரு சொட்டு விந்து ஒரு உயிரையே உண்டாக்குமானால், அதைச் சேர்த்துவைப்பவனின் வல்லமையை யாரால்தான் அளக்க முடியும்?

பதஞ்சலி , இதற்கு ஐந்து கட்டுப்பாடுகளை விதித்தார் ; அதில் ஒன்றை மட்டும் பின்பற்றினால் போதும் என்ற பேச்சுக்கே இடமில்லை; வேண்டுமானால் சத்தியம் (வாய்மை) ஒன்றிருந்தால் போதும் என்று சொல்லலாம். ஏனெனில் சத்தியத்தைக் கடைப்பிடித்தால் மற்ற நான்கும் அதில் அடக்கம் ஆகிவிடும். தற்போதைய உலகிற்கு அந்த 5 விதிகள் 11 ஆக விரிவாக்கப்பட்டது ஆசார்ய வினோபா இதுபற்றி ஒரு மராட்டி மொழி கவிதை எழுதியுள்ளார் . அவர் அஹிம்சை, சத்யம், பிறர் பொருள் நயவாமை , நாக்கினைக் கட்டுப்படுத்தல், உழைத்து உண்ணுதல், அச்சமின்மை, எல்லா மதங்களையும் மதித்தல், ஸ்வதேசி உணர்வு , தீண்டாமை ஒழிப்பு என்று சொல்லுவார் . இவை எல்லாம் சத்தியத்தைக் கடைப்பிடித்தால் கிடைக்கக்கூடியதே. வாழ்க்கை என்பது சிக்கலானது ஆகையால் இவை ஒவ்வொன்றும் முக்கியமானதே (ஹரிஜன் இதழ் 8-6-1947)

இந்தியாவில் பிரம்மச்சாரிக்கான கட்டுப்பாடுகள்

இந்தியாவில் பிரம்மச்சாரிக்கான சில கட்டுப்பாடுகள் இருக்கின்றன. பெண்களுடனோ, பிராணிகளுடனோ, அலிகளுடனோ அவன் வசிக்கக்கூடாது .பெண்களுக்குத் தனியாகவோ குழுவாகவோ பாடம் எடுக்கக்கூடாது ; தயிர், பால்  வெண்ணெய், போன்ற கொழுப்பு உணவுகளைப் பயன்படுத்தக்கூடாது  பெண்களுடன் ஒரே பாயில் அமரக்கூடாது பெண்களின் உடலுறுப்புகளைக் காணக்கூடாது என்று பல கட்டுப்பாடுகள். நான் தென் ஆப்பிரிக்காவில் சில பிரம்மச்சாரிகளைக் கண்டேன். அவர்கள் இந்தக்கட்டுப்பாடுகளை தேவை என்று கருதவில்லை.. நானும் இதைக் கடைப்பிடிக்கவில்லை. விதிகளை மீறுவதில் சமர்த்தன் நான்.  நானும் பால் , தயிர் நெய்யை விட்டவன்தான். ஆனால் அதற்கான காரணங்கள் வேறு. இந்தியாவுக்கு வந்த இரண்டு மூன்று ஆண்டுகளுக்குள் அதையும் விட்டேன். பால், தயிர் , நெய் ஆகிய சத்துக்கு இணையான காய்கறிகள் கிடைத்தால் பிராணிகளிடம் கிடைக்கும் பொருட்களை உண்ண  மாட்டேன் ; மகிழ்ச்சியோடு அவைகளை விட்டுவிடுவேன் ; அது வேறு கதை (இப்போது வேண்டாம் ) .

நல்ல பிரம்மச்சாரி ஒரு துளி விந்துவையும் வீணடிக்க மாட்டான் .. அதை அவன் அதிகரிக்கவும் செய்கிறான் ; அதை வீணடிக்காமல் பாதுகாக்கிறான் .ஆகையால் அவனுக்கு (மனத்தளவில்) முதுமை வராது; அவன் புத்தி கூர்மையாகவே இருக்கும் எனக்கு ஒரு விஷயம் மனத்தில் படுகிறது . உண்மையான பிரம்மச்சாரிக்கு இவை எல்லாம் கூடத் தேவையில்லை; .வெளிப்புற கட்டுப்பாடுகளால் வருவதில்லை  பிரம்மச்சர்யம்.; பெண்களையே பார்க்காமல் ஓடுபவன் ,  பிரம்மச்சர்யத்தைப் புரிந்துகொள்ளவில்லை .

பொய்யான கட்டுப்பாடுகளை அவன் வெறுத்து ஒதுக்குவான் .அவனுடைய வரம்புகளை அறிந்து அவனே வெளி போட்டுக்கொள்ளலாம். இனி அவை தேவை இல்லை என்ற நிலை வருமானால் வேலிகளை உடைத்து எறியலாம்.. முதலில் பிரம்மசர்யத்தைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும். அதன் மஹிமையை உணர்ந்து விலை மதிக்க முடியாத அந்த பொக்கிஷத்தை பாதுகாத்துக் கடைப்பிடிக்க வேண்டும். நாட்டிற்கு சேவை செய்ய இது தேவை

இறைவனை அறிய பிரம்மச்சர்யம்

மின்சாரம் சக்தி வாய்ந்தது ; எல்லோரும் அதனால் பயனடைய முடியாது. சில விதிகளைப் பின்பற்றினால்தான் அதை உற்பத்தி செய்ய முடியும் . அதற்கு உயிர் கிடையாது மனிதன் கஷ்டப்பட்டுதான் அதைப்பற்றிய முழு அறிவையும் அடைகிறான் ; அதே போலவே  நாம் கடவுள் என்று அழைக்கும் சக்தியும் , அவன் பற்றிய விதிகளை அறிந்தால் நம்முள் இருப்பதை அறியலாம்.கடவுளின் விதிகளை அறிவது மெத்த கடினம் என்பதை நாம் அறிவோம், கடவுளை அடைய, ஒரு விதி பிரம்மச்சர்யம் ஆகும். இதை நான் அனுபவத்தில் கண்டேன். துளசிதாஸ் போன்ற பத்தர்கள் இந்த செம்மையான வழியைக்காட்டுகின்றனர். எனக்கு ராம நாமத்தின் சக்தி நான் உருளி காஞ்சன் கிராமத்தில்  இருந்தபோது தெரிந்தது.

என்னுடைய சொந்த அனுபவத்துக்கு முக்கியம் தரவேண்டாம்.எனக்கு அந்த கிராமத்த்தில் தான் ராமநாமத்தின் சக்தி தெரிந்தது எல்லா பிரச்சனைகளுக்கும் ராமா நாமம்  தீர்வு தரும்;  யார் ஒருவன் இந்த நாமத்தைப் பயன்படுத்துகிறானோ அவன் சிறிது முயற்சி செய்தாலும் பெரும்பலனை அடைகிறான்.

இதே பாதையில் செல்லும் நான் ஒன்று சொல்லுவேன்; பிரம்மசர்யத்துக்குத் தேவையான மற்ற கட்டுப்பாடுகள் இந்த ராம நாமத்தின் முன்னர்  கொசுறு போன்றதே.. இந்த ஈடு இணையற்ற கருவியை அறியும் முயற்சியில் நாடும் வழிமுறை யாது, நாடித் தேடும் பொருள் யாது என்பதுகூட மறைந்து போகிறது .ராம  நாமத்தை இருதயத்தில் நிறுத்தினால் அதன் அபூர்வ சக்தியை அறியலாம்  இவ்வழியில் இறைவனை அடைய 11 விதிகள் இருப்பதைக் கண்டோம். சத்தியம் என்னும் வழியாக ராமன் என்னும் பொருளைத் தேடினோம்.ராம நாமமும் சத்தியமும்  ஒன்றே அல்லவா ?

புத்தகத்தை எப்படிக் காப்பது?

நம்மிடமிருக்கும் நல்ல புத்தகத்தை எப்படியெல்லாம் யாரிடமிருந்தெல்லாம் காக்க வேண்டியிருக்கிறது பாருங்கள்!

தைலம் – எண்ணெய் படாமல் பத்திரமாக நமது புத்தகங்களைப் பாதுகாப்பாக வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும்.

நீர் – தண்ணீர் பட்டால் அவ்வளவு தான்! நீர் படாத இடத்தில் இருக்க வேண்டும்.

சிதில பந்தனா – பைண்டிங் செய்யும் போது சரியாகச் செய்ய வேண்டும். தவறான முறையில் புத்தகத்தைத் தைத்தால், பைண்ட் செய்தால் நீடித்து இருக்காது!

மூர்க ஹஸ்த தானம் – இது மிக முக்கியமானது. அறிவற்ற ஒருவன் கையில் புத்தகத்தைக் கொடுத்தால் இருவகையில் நஷ்டம். நமக்கும் பிரயோஜனம் இல்லை; அவனுக்கும் இல்லை!

What is Brahmacharya (celibacy) ? It is the way of life which leads us to Brahman (God). It includes full control over the process of reproduction. The control must be in thought, word and deed. If the thought is not under control, the other two have no value.

There is a saying in Hindustani:

He whose heart is pure has all the purifying waters of Ganga in his house.

For one whose thought is under control the other is mere child’s play. The Brahmachari of my conception will be healthy and will easily live long. He will not even suffer from so much as a headache. Mental and physical work will not cause fatigue. He is ever bright, never slothful. Outward neatness will be an exact reflection of the inner. He will exhibit all the attributes of the steadfast one described in the Gita. It need cause no worry if not one person is met with answering the description.

Is it strange that one who is able completely to conserve and sublimate the vital fluid which has the potentiality of creating human beings should exhibit all the attributes described above? Who can measure the creative strength of such sublimation, one drop of which has the potentiality of bringing into being a human life?

Patanjali has described five disciplines. It is not possible to isolate any one of these and practise it. It may be posited in the case of Truth, because it really includes the other four. And for this age five have been expanded into eleven. Acharya Vinoba has put them in the form of a Marathi verse. They are non-violence, truth, non-stealing, brahmacharya, non-possession, bread labour, control of the palate , fearlessness, equal regard for all religions, swadeshi and removal of untouchability .

All these can be derived from Truth. But life is complex. It is well to bear in mind that all the disciplines are of equal importance.(Harijan 8-6-1947)

Brahmachari Rules in India

There are certain rules laid down in India for the would be Brahmachari.Thus he may not live among women, animals an eunuchs, he may not teach a woman only or even in a group, he may not sit on the same mat as a woman, he may not look at any part of a woman’s body, he may not take milk, curds, ghee or any fatty substance nr indulge in baths and oily massages. I read about these when I was in South Africa. There I came in touch with some men and women, who while they observed Brahmacharya, never knew any of the above named restraints were necessary. Nor did I observe them and I was none the worse for the non-observance. I did give milk, ghee and other animal substances but for different reasons. I failed I this attempt  after two or three years after my return to India but today if I could find any effective vegetable substitute for milk and ghee, I would gladly renounce all animal products. But this is another story.

 A perfect Brahmachari never loses his vital fluid. On the contrary, he is able to increase it day by day and, what is more, he conserves it; he will, therefore, never become old in the accepted sense and his intellect will never be dimmed.

It appears to me that even the true aspirant does not need the above mentioned restraints Brahmachari

Brahmacharya is not a virtue that can be cultivated by outward restraints . He who runs away from a necessary contact with a woman does not understand the full meaning of brahmacharya.

The true brahmachari will shun false restraints. He must create his own fences according to his limitations, breaking them down when he feels that they are unnecessary. The first thing is to know what true brahmacharya is, then to realize its value and lastly to try to cultivate this priceless virtue . I hold that true service of the country demands this observance.

Brahmacharya in relation to God

Electricity is a powerful force. Not all can benefit from it. T can be produced by following certain laws. It is  a lifeless force. Man can utilize it if he  labours hard enough to acquire the knowledge of its laws.

The living force which we call God can similarly be found if we know and follow His law leading to the discovery o Him in us. But it is self evident that to find out God’s law requires far harder labour. The law may, in one word, be termed Brahmacharya. I can say this from experience. Devotees and sages like Tulsidas have shown this royal path. No one need to give undue importance to my own experience.  Perhaps I am right in saying that the potency of Ramanama brought vividly home to me in Uruli Kanchan (It is the Maharashtra village where with Manibhai Desai, Gandhiji established the Naturopathy Ashram- Nisargopachar Ashram). It was there I asserted the surest remedy for all our ills was Ramanama. He who can make full use of it can show powerful results with very little outside effort.

Following this line of thought I can say with conviction that the orthodox aids to Brahmacharya pale into insignificance before Ramanama,  when this name is enthroned in heart. Then and then only do we realize its transcendent beauty and power.  In the vigilant search for this matchless and unfailing weapon we find it hard to differentiate  between ends and means. Thus , the 11 rules of conduct are the means to enable us to reach God. Of the 11 rules Truth is the means  and God called Rama is the end. Is it not equally true that Ramanama is the means and Truth is the end?

But let me revert to the original point the accepted meaning of the Brahmacharya is the attainment by man of complete control over the sex organ. The golden means to attain that end is Ramanama.

கேரளத்தில் உள்ள கொல்லம் நகரிலும் , திருவாங்கூரிலும் 1937ம் ஆண்டு ஜனவரி 16, 17 தேதிகளில் மஹாத்மா காந்தி சொற்பொழிவாற்றினார் ; இதன் சுருக்கம் ஹரிஜன் பத்திரிகையில் 30-1-1937 ல் வெளியானது (தமிழாக்கம் – லண்டன் சுவாமிநாதன்)

இந்துமதம் என்ன என்பது பற்றி சற்று நேரம் சிந்திப்போம் .வரலாற்றுச் சான்றுள்ள ஏராளமான சாது, சன்யாசிகளுக்கு இது எப்படி ஊற்றுணர்ச்சி கொடுத்தது? எப்படி நிறைய தத்துவ வித்தகர்களை உருவாக்கியது ? நூற்றுக்கணக்கான ஆண்டுகளாக பக்கதர்களை எது ஊக்குவிக்கிறது? தீண்டாமையை எதிர்த்துப் போராடிவரும் என்னை பலர் இந்துமதம் என்ன தீர்வு அளிக்கிறது என்று கேட்கிறார்கள் . காயத்ரீ மந்திரம் , நம் பிரச்சனைகளுக்கு தீர்வு என்று பலர் சொல்கிறார்கள் . அவர்கள் சொல்வதில் பொருள் உள்ளது . நானும் காயத்ரீ மந்திரத்தை ஆயிரக்கணக்கான முறை சொல்லியிருப்பேன். அதன் பொருளும் தெரியும். ஆயினும் எனது   ஆசை அபிலாஷைகளை அது தீர்த்து வைக்கவில்லை.கடந்த பல ஆண்டுகளாக நான் பகவத் கீதையை தலைக்குமேல் வைத்துக் கொண்டாடிவருவதையும் நீங்கள் அறிவீர்கள்.; என்னுடைய எல்லாப்  பிரச்சனைகளுக்கும் பதில் தருவது கீதை; அது ஒரு காமதேனு ; அது என்னுடைய வழிகாட்டி; அது என் ஓம் சூம் மந்திரக்காளி போன்ற மாஜிக் மந்திரம் ; நூற்றுக்கணக்கான கஷ்டங்களைத் தீர்த்து  வைத்தது என்றெல்லாம் நான் பேசிவருவதையும் நீங்கள் அறிவீர்கள். அந்த பகவத் கீதை எனக்கு ஆறுதல் அளிக்காத ஒரு சம்பவம் கூடக் கிடையாது . ஆனால் அந்த முழு புஸ்தகத்தையும் உங்கள் முன்னர் சமர்ப்பிப்பது முடியாது. அந்தக் காமதேனு நீங்கள் கேட்டதையெல்லாம் கொடுக்கும் பாலை அதன் மடுவில் வைத்திருந்தாலும் அதைக்  கறக்க நீங்கள் பகவத் கீதையை ஆழ்ந்த பக்தியுடன் படிக்க வேண்டும் .

ईशावास्यं इदम् सर्वं यत्किञ्च जगत्यां जगत् ।
तेन त्यक्तेन भुञ्जीथा मा गृधः कस्यस्विद्धनम् ॥ १ ॥

ஆனால் நான் ஒரு மந்திரத்தைத் தேர்தெடுத்துள்ளேன். இந்து மதத்தின் மொத்த சாரத்தையும் கொண்டுள்ள அந்த மந்திரத்தை இப்போது சொல்லப் போகிறேன் . உங்களில் பலருக்கும் ஈசோபநிஷத் தெரிந்திருக்கும் ; உபநிஷத்தையும் அதன் மீதுள்ள பாஷ்யங்களையும் பல்லாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னரே படித்தேன். ஏரவாடா  சிறையில் என்னை அடைத்த போது அதை மனப்படமும் செய்தேன் .அப்போது புரிபடாத விஷயம் கடந்த சில மாதங்களாக என்னைக் கவர்ந்து வருகிறது . திடீரென்று எல்லா உபநிஷத்துக்களும் , ஏனைய நூல்கள் அனைத்தும் தீக்கிரையானாலும்  ஈசோபநிஷத்தின் முதல் மந்திரம் மட்டும் இந்துக்களின் நினைவில் நிற்குமானால், இந்துமதம் காலா காலத்துக்கும் அழியாது நிற்கும்..

அந்த மந்திரத்தை நான்,  நான்கு பகுதிகளாகப் பிரித்துச் சொல்லுவேன்.முதல் பகுதி

ஈசாவாஸ்யம் இதம் ஸர்வம் யத்கிம் ச ஜகத்யாம்  ஜகத் ; அதை நான் இப்படி மொழிபெயர்ப்பேன் : இந்தப் பிரபஞ்சம்  முழுதும் இறைவனால் வியாபிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது . அதற்குப்பின் இரண்டாவது மூன்றாவது பகுதிகள் வருகின்றன; அதை ஒன்றாகப் பார்த்தால்

த்யேன த்யத்தேன  புஞ்சீதாஹா ; அவைகளை நான் மொழிபெயர்க்கிறேன் : துறந்து விடுங்கள்; மகிழ்ச்சியாக அனுபவியுங்கள் ; இன்னொரு விதமாகவும் இதை மொழிபெயர்க்கிறார்கள்; இறைவன் கொடுத்ததை வைத்து இன்பமாக வாழ்வாயாக என்று.. இதற்கடுத்தாற்போல்தான் இறுதிப் பகுதி, மிக முக்கியமான பகுதி வருகிறது :

மா க்ருதஹ  கஸ்யத்வித்தனம்

அதன் பொருள் – எவன் செல்வத்தையும் உடமைகளையும் அபகரிக்காதே

மற்ற எல்லா மந்திரங்களும் இந்த முதல் மந்திரத்தின் வியாக்கியானமாகவோ முழு விளக்கமாகவோ வருகிறது .இந்த மந்திரத்தை கீதையின் பின்னனியில் பார்த்தாலோ அல்லது கீதையை இந்த மந்திரத்தின் பின்னனியில் பார்த்தாலோ கீதையே இதன் பாஷ்யம்தான் (விளக்க உரை) என்றும் காண்கிறேன்.. இது சோஷலிசவாதிகள், கம்யூனிஸவாதிகள், தத்துவ வாதிகள், பொருளாதார நிபுணர்கள் ஆகியோர் எல்லோர் விருப்பங்களுக்கும் இசைவானது .

இந்துமதத்தைச் சாராதவர்களுக்கும் கூட இது இசை வானதே என்று துணிந்து சொல்லுவேன்.  இந்த மந்திரத்துக்கு எதிரானதாக இந்து மதத்தில் எதைக் கண்டாலும்  அதைப் பொருட்படுத்த வேண்டியதில்லை; ஏனெனில் இது உண்மையான  கொள்கை .

தெருவில் செல்லக்கூடிய சாதாரண மனிதனுக்கும் கூட வேறு என்ன தெரிய வேண்டும்? இறைவதான் உலகம் முழுதும் இருக்கிறான்; அந்த ஒரு கடவுள்தான் இந்த உலகத்தைப் படைத்தான், வழிநடத்துகிறான் என்பதைத்தவிர . மந்திரத்தின் மற்ற மூன்று பகுதிகளும் முதல் மந்திரத்தைச் சார்ந்தே உள்ளன.

கடவுள்தான் உலகைப் படைத்தான்; அவன் எங்கும் நிறைந்தவன் என்பதை நீங்கள் நம்பினால் அவன் கொடுப்பதையே நாம் ஏற்கவேண்டும் . அவன்தான் ஏனையோரையும் படைத்தான் என்று நம்புவோமானால் அவர்களது செல்வத்தை நாம் எப்படி அபகரிக்க முடியும்? நீங்களும் அவனுடைய குழந்தைகளில் ஒருவர் என்றால், எல்லாவற்றையும் துறந்து அவனது காலடியில் சமர்ப்பிக்க வேண்டும்தானே.. இப்படித் துறப்பது நமது இரண்டாவது பிறப்பாகும் இதை அறியாமையினால் செய்யவில்லை; அறிந்தே செய்வதால் அது மறு பிறப்பாகும் அவன் நம்மைப் படைத்ததால்   அ வன் கொடுப்பதைக் கொண்டு மகிழ  வேண்டும் ; நாம் துறந்துவிட்டதால் அவன் கொடுக்கும் பரிசு அவை என்பதை அறிய வேண்டும்.

.இது மட்டுமா ? மந்திரம் அற்புதமாக முடிகிறது ; பிறர் பொருளை பறிக்காதே. இதை பின்பற்றினால் உலகத்தின் நல்ல குடிமகன்களாக வாழலாம். எல்லா இடங்களிலும் சாந்தி நிலவும் .

கொல்லத்தில் உரையாற்றிய மறுநாள் திருவாங்கூர் ஹரிபாத்தில் சொற்பொழிவாற்றுகையில் மஹாத்மா காந்தி மீண்டும் இம்மந்திரத்தை விளக்கி எல்லோருக்கும் இதைக் கற்பியுங்கள்; எல்லோர் மனதிலும் இது எப்போதும் இருக்கட்டும் என்கிறார்.. பின்னர் கோட்டயத்தில் கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் கூட்டத்தில் மஹாத்மா காந்தி சொற்பொழிவாற்றியபோதும் இதே மந்திரத்தை அவர்களுக்கும் சொன்னார் .

உலகம் இறைவனால் படைக்கப்பட்டது ; அவன் எங்கும் நிறைத்துள்ளான். எல்லாவற்றையும் அவன் காலடியில் சமர்ப்பித்துவிட்டு அவன் கொடுப்பதை வைத்து மகிழ்ச்சியாக வாழ்வாயாக; பிறர்  பொருளை  நயவாதே/ பறிக்காதே

Gandhiji explained the meaning of his favourite Upanishad mantra in two meetings in Quilon on 16-1-1937 and at Haripad in Travancore on 17-1-1937.

I have perhaps recited the Gayatri Mantra a thousand times , having understood the meaning of it. But it still seems to me that it di not answer the whole of my aspirations. Then as you are aware I have, for years past, been swearing by the Bhagavadgita , and have said that it answers all my difficulties and has been my Kamadhenu, my guide, my ‘open sesame’, on hundreds of moments of doubt and difficulty. I cannot recall a single occasion when it has failed me. But it is not a book that I can place before the whole of this audience. It requires a prayerful study before the Kamadhenu yields the rich milk it holds in her udders.

But I have fixed upon one mantra that I am going to recite to you, as containing the whole essence of Hinduism. Many of you, I think, know the Isopanishad. I read it years ago with translation and commentary. I learnt it by heart in Yeravada jail. But it did not then captivate me, as it has done during the past few months, and now I have come to the final conclusion that if all the Upanishads and all other scriptures happened all of a sudden to be reduced to ashes, and if only the first verse in the Isopanishad were left intact in the memory of Hindus, Hinduism would live for ever.

ईशावास्यं इदम् सर्वं यत्किञ्च जगत्यां जगत् ।
तेन त्यक्तेन भुञ्जीथा मा गृधः कस्यस्विद्धनम् ॥ १ ॥

Now this mantra divides into four parts. The first part is

īśāvāsyam idam sarvaṁ

yat kiñca jagatyāṁ jagat

It means as I would translate, all that we see in this great universe is pervaded by God. Then come the second and third parts which read together , as I read them: tena tyaktena bhuñjīthā. I divide this into two and translate them thus : Renounce and enjoy it. There is another rendering which means the same thing, though: enjoy what He gives you. Even so you can divide it into two parts. Then follows the final and most important part

mā gṛdhaḥ kasya svid dhanam

which means: Do not covet anybody’s wealth or possession. All the other mantras of that ancient Upanishad  are a commentary or an attempt to give us the full meaning of the first mantra. As I read the mantra in the light of Gita or the Gita in the light of the mantra, I find that the Gita is a commentary on this mantra. It seems to me to satisfy the cravings of the socialist and communist, of the philosopher and the economist. I venture to suggest to all who do not belong to the Hindu faith that it satisfies their cravings also. And if it is true—and I hold it to be true — you need not take anything in Hinduism which is inconsistent with or contrary to the meaning of this mantra.

What more can a man in the street want to learn this , that the One God and Creator and Master of all that lives pervades the universe? The three other parts of the mantra follow directly from the first. If you believe that God pervades everything that He has created,  you must believe that you cannot enjoy anything that is not given by Him. And seeing that He is the Creator of His numberless children, it follows that you cannot covet anybody’s possession. If you believe that you are one of His numerous creatures, it behoves you to renounce everything and lay it at His feet. That means that the act of renunciation of everything is not a physical renunciation but represents a second or new birth. It is a deliberate act, not done in ignorance. It is therefore a regeneration. And then since he who holds the body must eat and drink and cloth himself,  he must naturally seek all that he needs from Him. And he gets it as a natural reward of that renunciation.

As if this was not enough the mantra closes with this magnificent thought: Do not covet anybody’s possession. The moment you carry out these precepts you become wise citizen of the world living at peace with all that lives.  It satisfies one’s highest aspirations on this earth and hereafter.

Next day also Gandhiji explained this mantra and described it as Golden Key for the solution of all difficulties and doubts that may assail one’s heart.

He repeated, “Remember that one verse of the Isopanishad and forget all about other scriptures. You can of course drown yourselves and be suffocated in the ocean of scriptures. They are good for the learned if they will be humble and wise, but for the ordinary man in the street, nothing but this mantra is necessary to carry him across the ocean.

 In Travancore speech the next day, Gandhi said,

I would like the mantra I have recited to be enshrined in the hearts of all our men and women and children. And it should be inscribed on the portals of every temple.
