India has lost the tradition of True Vedic learning long ago. Neither the Westerners nor the orthodox people have understood the meaning of Veda properly. Basic to both is the interpretation and commentary of Sayanacharya, who lived just bout 600 years ago. He was himself not a Vedic scholar and he proceeded in his commentary on the basis that the Vedas were entirely about ritualistic yajnas. In his attempts to fix meanings to fit the ritualistic frame, he wrote many absurd things. He ignored the earlier, ancient traditions of Yaska and others that the Vedas had a deeper, higher, hidden meaning meant for the initiates. In modern times, this higher sense was recovered by Sri Aurobindo who saw the Veda as much more than a mere ritualistic manual. He brought out the true significance and meaning of the Veda in two books: The Secret of The Veda, and Hymns To The Mystic Fire. In these, he has repudiated the philological and other modern absurdities concerning the Veda and given a consistent explanation of the true teaching of the Veda which is to make man realise his divine and immortal nature. Following Sri Aurobindo’s work. Sri T.V.Kapali Sastry made a study and brought out his translations and commentary of a few more Vedic mantras. Following these efforts, Dr.R.L Kashyap has provided an English translation of the entire Vedas , with Sanskrit text Each mantra is divided into three or four padas naturally and the meaning given, with critical notes and cross references, all in accordance with the method shown by Sri Aurobindo. These volumes have been published by Sri Aurobindo Kapali Sastry Institute of Vedic Culture, [SAKSHI] Bangalore .They bring out the psychological and spiritual import of the Veda. In the light of this, all previous works stand outdated.
