Mahabharata is full of twists and turns. Here is scene just before the great war begins

Dr S.Radhakrishnan, philosopher, and former President of India describes the scene in the battlefield:

योत्स्यमानानवेक्षेऽहं य एतेऽत्र समागता: |
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य दुर्बुद्धेर्युद्धे प्रियचिकीर्षव: || 23||

yotsyamānān avekhe ha ya ete tra samāgatā
dhārtarā
hrasya durbuddher yuddhe priya-chikīrhava

I desire to see those who have come here to fight on the side of the evil-minded son of Dhritarasthra, wishing to please him.

His request for the chariot to be placed in the middle of the battlefield was to take a closer look at the Kaurava army. Arjun wanted to see all those who had taken the side of injustice. He wanted to punish them equally, as they had chosen to be on the wrong side, none of them would be spared.

Dr S.R.’s commentary on the above sloka:-

All the preparations for the ware are ready. That very morning , Yudhisthira looks at the impenetrable formation organised by Bhisma. trembling with fear he tells Arjuna: How can victory be ours in the face of such an army?

Arjuna encourages his brother quoting an ancient verse, “they that are desirous of victory, conquer not so much by might and prowess as by truth, compassion, pity, and virtue. Victory is certain to be where Krishna is. … Victory is one of his attributes  … so also is humility.

Krishna advises Arjuna to purify himself and pry to Durga for success. Arjuna descends from his chariot and chants in praise of the Goddess. Pleased with his devotion,  Durga blesses Arjuna, O Son of Pandu, you will vanquish your enemy in on time. You have Narayana himself to help you. And yet as a man of action, Arjuna did not think out the implications of his enterprise. The presence of his teacher, the consciousness of the Divine, helps him to realise that the enemies he has to fight are dear and sacred to him. He has to cut social ties for the protection of justice and the suppression of lawless violence.

The establishment of the  Kingdom of God on earth is a cooperative enterprise between God and man. Man is a co-sharer in the work of creation.
