English word DOOR is derived from the Sanskrit word DWAAR. Lord Krishna used it in at least two places to give us an important message.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna used it to tell us about the Gate Way (door) to Heaven and Gate Way to Hell. Anyone who reads crime news in Newspapers would agree with Lord Krishna.

First look at the slokas and then we will discuss it.

यदृच्छया चोपपन्नं स्वर्गद्वारमपावृतम् |
सुखिन: क्षत्रिया: पार्थ लभन्ते युद्धमीदृशम् || 2-32||

yadṛichchhayā chopapannaṁ swarga-dvāram apāvṛitam
sukhinaḥ kṣhatriyāḥ pārtha labhante yuddham īdṛiśham

Happy are the Kshatriyas (warriors), O Partha/Arjuna, for whom such a war comes of its own accord as an open door to heaven.

My comments

All religions say that fighting for own country or religion and dying in such a fighting will take one to Heaven. In Tamil Sangam poems, we see a mother rejoicing after his son died in the war heroically fighting for his country. This Veera Maathaa (Heroic Mother) concept is seen in the Rig Veda as well.

Hindus never believed in absolute Ahimsa/non violence. And the 200 ++++ countries in the world also agree with the Hindus. Army, Navy and Air Force employ the highest number of people in the world. Western countries make big money by selling arms to fighting groups. We also salute our ever vigilant heroic soldiers guarding our borders in the snow clad Himalayas.

We see Asuras and Demons in all religious books and the goodies are always fighting  for the welfare of people. Hindus believe in the Tenth Avatar- Kalki Avatar – who will destroy the bad people. In the Fourth Chapter of Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna says Sambhavaami Yuge Yuge he would manifest himself in every era to protect the good and destroy the evil forces. So Hindus expect another fighting.

Vyasa makes it clear in Udhyoga Parva of Mahabharata as well:

O, you Tiger among men! There are only two types who can pierce the constellation of the Sun (and reach the sphere of Brahman); the one is the Sanyasin who is steeped in Yoga and the other is the warrior who falls in the battle field while fighting– Udhyoga Parva 3-65

Gate Way to Hell

त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मन: |
काम: क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत् || 21||

tri-vidhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśhanam ātmanaḥ
kāmaḥ krodhas tathā lobhas tasmād etat trayaṁ tyajet

There are three gates leading to the hell of self-destruction for the soul—lust, anger, and greed.

Therefore, one should abandon all three.

My comments

I used to go to HM Prisons every week to see Hindu prisoners in England. Hindu prisoners are very few compared to the huge number of Muslim and Christian prisoners. But when Hindu prisoners come with their friends belonging to other religions, they will tell me the stories of their friends as well. For all the prisoners, the reason for coming into the prison is same- Kaama, Krodha, Lobha= Sex, Anger, Greediness.

Everyday we read crime news in newspapers. One  can easily divide the offenders into these three types. Lord Krishna told us at least 5000 years ago.

So if we remember these doors or gate ways, we can chose the best or at least avoid the worst.
