During the time of French Revolution, when the months in France were named Thermidor, Floreal, Nivose etc.,  — Sheridan proposed to extend the innovation to the English language, beginning with Januray, as – Freezy, Sneezy, Breezy, Wheezy, Showery, Lowery, Flowery, Bowery, Snowy, Flowy, Blowy, Glowy.”

Revolution or Revolt?

Following are some of the anecdotes on revolution:

On the afternoon of July 14, 1789, the Duc de La Rochefoucauls – Liancourt brought to King Louis XVI at Versailles the news of the capture of Bastille. The king exclaimed, “Why, this is a revolt!

“No, sire,” replied the Duke, “it is a revolution.”

Revolutionary Irishman

The character of the natural revolutionary is typified by the Irishman who was cast ashore upon a beach after a shipwreck. Weak and exhausted from his struggle with the waves, the castaway staggered along the sands until he encountered a man. “Is there a government here?” he asked next.

“Of course,” was the reply.

“Then – I am against it?”

Heads Roll! Man who made hats hates!

A man living in a village outside Paris during the Revolution met a friend frsh from the city and asked what was happening.

“It’s awful”, was the reply, “they are cutting off heads by the thousand.”

“Good Heavens! Surely not heads,” he cried.

“Why, I am a hatter!”

Tamil poet Bharati is unquestionably the greatest Tamil poet of the modern times. He is one of the foremost poets of Modern India.

He is more famous for his patriotic songs. But there is no subject that he hasn’t touched. He has sung about all the great freedom fighters of yesteryears. He composed poems on nature, science, social issues, all religions, Hindu devotional poems, Panachali’s Vow from Mahabharata. He has used scores of animals in his poems. He was a person who studied Vedas in Varanasi. He knew French, Hindi, Sanskrit in addition to Tamil. He has sung about many saints. He has even composed poems on Halley’s comet, rain, Sun rise, thunder etc.

His patriotic verses and the verses in praise of Tamil language are sung by every child in Tamil Nadu even today. They are household verses. Lot of his poems have found a place in several feature films. Not many people knew that he was prophetic like Nostradamus. Let us look at his past and future predictions.

Past predictions

1.He sung about India’s freedom , quarter of a century before India actually became free. He died in 1921 singing that let us dance and sing that we have attained our country’s freedom

2.He sung about Chinese attack of 1963 half a century before China attacked India.

3.He has sung about scientific inventions, billions of heavenly bodies etc..

4.His songs on women’s liberation have come true

5.His vision about Tamil being recognised as a classical language and world language also became true. Tamil computer personnel’s migration to different parts of the world and Sri Lankan refugee influx in to countries from Norway to New Zealand have made Tamil a language spoken from North pole to South pole. From the time of World War II, BBC World Service is also broadcasting in Tamil. Bharati was the one who had this perspective outlook even before all these things happened.

Future predictions

He is a poet who strongly believed in the power of words. He prayed to goddess to give him words that are Mantras, like the ancient Vedic seers. His three important predictions are very interesting. All the poets see what even Sun cannot see according to Hindi saying, “Jahan na pahunche Ravi, Wahan pahunche Kavi.”

He visualised three things:

1.India becoming World Guru, i.e, Big Super Power

2.Children worshipping Undivided India (Akhand Bharat)

  1. A Bridge between India and Sri Lanka like Rama setu.

All the three are yet to come true. After looking at his successful past predictions, I am sure his predictions will become true soon.

IMG_3754 (2)

1).India becoming Guru (Super Power)

India was the Guru of the world 2000 years ago which attracted people from Alexander to Columbus. Later the political leadership changed. Now we have five big powers. India would become a big power soon and it wont be a big power because of its nuclear arsenal but because of its moral weapons. Bharati,  in one of his  poems, repeats three times that India would guide the world.

2)Pakistan and Bangladesh will disappear

In a poem to children he ask them to worship Hindustan that was not partitioned. In his days Muslims refused to say Vandemataram and used Allahu Akbar instead. Mohammed Ali Jinna split the country into India and Pakistan in 1947 and then in 1971, we helped the Bengalis of East Pakistan to create one more country named Bangladesh. Now both of them are equally critical of India. But Bharati’s Akhand Bharat prediction means those two countries would disappear from the map of the world and they would merge with India.

Who knows ?  Perhaps even without a war, it may happen peacefully. Forty years ago Rajaji, the first Governor General of India suggested a merger of India and Pakistan. Another possibility is that there may be a Third World War which would redraw the map of the world. Before the two world wars, the world map looked differently. Now we see every ten years a new country is appearing and a few countries are merging.

Third world war will happen in India according to American C I A. and a Hindu Yogi and such a war would place India at the top of the world.

3)Rama Setu to Sri Lanka

In one of his poems he sings that we should level the Setu area and build a bridge to the Singalese island/ Sri Lanka. Following the model of Rama Setu, it would not be difficult to build such a bridge. It will encourage trade and commerce between the two countries and our southern borders would be strengthened. Chinese presence at our southern borders can be avoided.

I give below the three references to his three predictions:

1).The way all men may become immortal (divine)

India, to the world will show

Yes, India to the world will show

Indeed India to the world will show.

2).This is the land of the Vedas

Where great and good heroes were born;

Flawless (unsplit) is Hindustan;

Adore this as God, My dear Child!

(He used two significant words here: Hindustanam and ‘Chedamillaatha’ in Tamil. Cheda is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘cut, split’. Chedamillaatha is uncut, not split, unspoiled, undivided)

3).We will build a bridge to Singhalese Island

And elevate Setu and make it a road;

We will irrigate central regions

With surplus water of Bengal (Ganges in Bengal).

Narakasura and Diwali Festival

All of us know the famous story behind Deepavali. Narakasura was killed by Lord Krishna and according to his request people remembered him by firing crackers and sparklers on that day every year. In the same way Malayalees in Kerala celebrate the return of the Asura king Mahabali. He was also killed by Vamana, one of the Ten Avatars (incarnation), like Krishna. This shows that even when Asuras were killed, people celebrated his ‘return’ i.e. annual remembrance. Foreigners interpreted it wrongly. They wrote that it was a compromise between two races. But those who read Hindu history in s the scriptures knew that their interpretation was absurd. How?

The very scriptures that give the story say that Devas and Asuras were cousins. Moreover all Asura stories show that they also prayed to Hindu gods for boons. Only difference was that they did not follow the basic principles like Satya (Truth) and Rta (Rhythm ,orderly rule). Both these are empahsised in Vedas and Epics.

Krishna’s grandson Anirudh married an Asura girl. Assam King Banasura’s daughter Usha married Anirudh. Banasura was also defeated by Krishna.

As we know from Vishnu Purana, Hari Vamsa and Kalika Purana, there was a king in Assam (Kamarupa) by name Narakasura at Krishna’s times. i.e. 5000 years ago. This was the belief of Assamese as well. Huein Tsiang who visited Assam (Kamarupa) in 643 CE also said that there were 1000 generations ruling Assam before his time. So we know what foreigners wrote was wrong.

Ramayana and Mahabharata mentioned Naraka. His life was associated with Janaka and Katyayani. People mistook it for the Kings of same name in different periods. Moreover Janaka is a title for all the kings who ruled Videha.

(1).Californians are famous for their loyalty to their native state. One of its native sons was once visiting his wife’s relatives in the East. While there he had occasion to attend the funeral of a man who was little liked in the community. At the services the minister, who was new to the parish, called upon someone to say few words about the deceased. A long and significant silence ensued. Finally, the true son of California stood up and said, “Well, since there is no one present who has anything to say about our departed brother, I would like a few minutes to tell you something about California.”

Bismarck story

(2).Bismarck told a story of an Alpine host who, after pointing out the glories of his native land, asked a berlin youth if they had any such mountains in Berlin. “No”, he replied, “we have not got such mountains, but, if we had, they would be much finer than these.”

(3).Emperor Vespasian: Bhagavad Gita Echo!

When the Emperor Vespasian commanded a Roman senator to give his voice against the interests of his country and threatened him with immediate death if he spoke on the other side, the Roman, conscious that the attempt to serve a people was in his power, answered with a smile:

“Did I ever tell you that I was immortal? My virtues is in my own disposal, my life in yours; you do what you will, I shall do what I ought; and if I fall in the service of my country, I shall have more triumph in my death than you in all your laurels.”

((When I read this I am reminded of the Bhagavd Gita sloka/couplet: “Either slain thou shalt go to heaven; or victorious thou shalt enjoy the earth; therefore, arise, Arjuna, resolved on the battle” (2-37) “Weapons do not cleave this self, fire does not burn him; waters do not make him wet; nor does the wind make him dry. The soul is eternal (2-23)

(4).Little Boy’s Reply

It was a little boy in an American school, who in his reply to his teacher’s question, “Who was the first man?” answered, “George Washington”, and upon being informed that it was Adam, exclaimed, “Ah, well! If you are speaking of foreigners, perhaps he was.”

(5).I would have produced more sons!

In the early part of the American civil war an elderly lady who attended meeting of the First Vermont Regiment, arose, full of enthusiasm, and said she thanked God that she was able to do something for her country; her two sons, all she possessed in the world, were in the regiment; and the only thing she had to regret was that she could not have known twenty years before that the war was coming – she would have furnished more.

(6).Retort to British

Sometime after the conclusion of the revolution, a young American was present in a British playhouse, where an interlude was performed in ridicule of Americans. A number of American officers being introduced in tattered uniforms, and barefoot, the question was put to them severally: “What was your trade before you entered the army?”

One answered tailor, another a cobbler etc. the wit of the piece was to banter them for not keeping themselves in clothes and shoes, but before that could be expressed, the American exclaimed from the gallery: “Greta Britain beaten by tailors and cobblers! Hurrah!”

Even the Prime Minister, who was present, could not help smiling, amidst a general peal of laughter.

Evolution: Monkey to Man! Some Anecdotes about Ancestors!

It is a common belief that mankind evolved from the monkeys. But the fact of the matter is man did not evolve from apes like gorillas or chimpanzees but he shares a common ancestor with them. Since there many missing links in the evolutionary ladder, still it debated by the biologists. There are some interesting anecdotes about ANCESTORS.

San-Marino-Abraham-Lincoln-USA

Abraham Lincoln’s Ancestors

Speaking of his ancestry Lincoln once humorously remarked, “ I don’t know who my grandfather was, but I am much more concerned to know what his grandson will be.”

Alexandre Dumas and Baboon!

The elder Dumas was once interviewed by an enterprising reporter, who like many other admirers of the novelist, was curious about his ancestry. “Is it true that you are a quadroon, M.Dumas?”, he asked.

“I am, sir,” Dumas replied.

“So your father……….?”

“Was a mulatto”

“And your grandfather…………?”

“Was a negro.”

Dumas’ patience was running out but the reporter was a bold man. He continued: “And may I inquire who your great- grandfather was?”

“A baboon, sir!” thundered Dumas. “A baboon! My ancestry begins where yours ends!”

((Quadroon : a person who is one quarter black by descent.

Mulatto : a person of white and black ancestry.

Alexander Dumas was famous for his novels and stories such as Three Musketeers. His novels were translated into 100 languages. 200 feature films were on his stories. He wrote 100,000 pages in his life time.))

Mark Twain’s Ancestor!

The story is told that Mark Twain was once a guest of an Englishman who took him, with some pride, into a manorial hall hung with huge tapestry depicting the judging of King Charles the First. The host placed his fingers with great pride upon the figure of one of the obscure clerks of the court and said, “An ancestor of mine.

Twain, always offended by such ostentation, casually put his finger upon one of the judges seated on the tribunal and remarked, “An ancestor of mine but it is no matter, I have others.”

1.How did Napoleon win the Hearts of his Soldiers?

Napoleon used many tricks to boost the morale of his troops. He would say to one of hi aides-de-camp, “Ascertain from the colonel of a regiment, whether he has in his corps a man, who has served in the campaigns of Italy, or the campaigns of Egypt. Ascertain his name, where he was born, the particulars of his family, and what he has done. Learn his number in the ranks, and to what company he belongs, and furnish me the information.”

On the day of the review, Napoleon, at a single glance, could spot the man who had been described to him. He would go up to him as if he recognised him, address him by his name and say – “Oh, so you are here! You are a brave fellow – I saw you at Aboukir – How is your old father! What! Have you not got the cross? Stay, I will give it to you.”

Then the delighted soldiers would say to each other, “You see the Emperor knows us all; he knows our families; he knows where we have served.”

What a stimulus this was to the soldiers whom he succeeded in persuading that they would all, sooner or later, become marshals of the Empire.

2.Aversion to Commerce

Napoleon openly expressed his aversion to commerce and those engaged in it. When a deputation of businessmen came out from Antwerp to welcome him on his approach to the city, he met them with the words: “I don’t like merchants! A merchant is a man who would sell his country for a shilling.”

“England is a country of shop keepers” – said Napoleon according to French Newspapers.

3.Procrastination

Napoleon instructed his secretary, Bourrienne, to leave all his letters unopened for three weeks, and then observed with satisfaction how large a part of correspondence thus disposed of itself and no longer required an answer.

4.On George Washington

On the reception of the news of the death of Washington, Napoleon addressed the following letter to the consular guard and the army:

“Washington is dead! That great man who fought against tyranny, and consolidated his country’s freedom. His memeory will be always dear to Frenchmen, and to all freemen in both the worlds – but especially to the French soldiers, who like him, and the American soldiers, have struggled for liberty and equality. The First Consul, therefore, orders that for ten days black crepe shall be suspended from all the flags and standards of the Republic.”

5.Mussolini and Napoleon

According to story circulating in Rome, Mussolini dies and goes to Paradise, where he is greeted warmly by Napoleon. “God will be here in a few minutes,” says Napoleon “Since you are new here, you should probably warned that we rise when he enters.”

“What! I get up? Don’t forget I am the Duce.” (Duce=Duke)

“I am Caesar,” states a voice. “Yet I have the manners to rise.”

“Not I”, says Mussolini. The argument is becoming warm when Machiavelli approaches.

“Peace, friends” he exclaims. “I will arrange everything”

Three solemn knock announce the coming of God.

“Attention!” thunders Machiavelli “Here come the photographer!”

Whereupon Mussolini hops to his feet, folds his arms, sticks out his chin and chest.

Peace reigns.

6.Great Butcher!

When Napoleon, after a series of victories, came to visit annexed Belgium, he found, on entering, Ghent, a triumphal arch erected by the Guild of Butchers. It was inscribed:

“The little butchers of Ghent to Napoleon the Great (butcher).”

7.Shortness

Napoleon was one day searching for a book in his library, and at last discovered it on a shelf somewhat above his reach. Marshall Moncey, one of the tallest men in the army, stepped forward, saying:

“Permit me, Sire, I am higher than your Majesty”

“You are longer, Marshal,” said the emperor with a frown.

8.Hair will Grow!

When General Leclerc, unloved husband of Pauline Bonaparte, died in Haiti, she had him placed in a costly coffin and cut off her beautiful hair and buried it with him.

“What a touching tribute to her dead husband!” said someone to her brother Napoleon.

The emperor smiled cynically:

“Hm! Of course she knows that her hair will come in longer and thicker for being cropped.”

9.Knowledge of Latin

One time when Louise Napoleon was racking his brains over a pile of Latin dictionaries and grammars, Napoleon the Third entered the room. He looked at him with sympathy and said, “It is a grind, translating Latin. I never could.

The tutor spoke up in astonishment, “But your Majesty’s translation of Caesar’s ‘commentaries’?”

“It was not mine,” said the Emperor and went off.

10.First among Women

Mme. De Stael (to  Napoleon ): General who is the woman you would love the most?

Napoleon : My own

Mme. De Stael: But what would woman would you admire the most?

Napoleon: The best housekeeper.

Mme. De Stael: But with you, who would be the first among women?

Napoleon: She who has had the most babies.

11.Persuasion

The leading nobles of Poland addressed a petition to Marie Walewska to accept Napoleon as her lover. They quoted scripture to reinforce their argument:

“Did Esther, do you think, give herself to Ahasueros out of the fullness of her love for him? So great was the terror with which he inspired her that she fainted at the sight of him.  We may therefore conclude that affection had but little to do with her resolve. She sacrificed her own inclinations to the salvation of her country and that salvation it was her glory to achieve. May we be enabled to say the same to you, to your glory and our own happiness!”

WEIGHT OF AN ELEPHANT: Boatman who outsmarted Aurangzeb!

Tulapur is a village near Pune in Maharashtra. This place is historically important because of the execution of Sambhaji, son of Shivaji the Great.

His Samadhi is situated there. Shivaji shook the very foundations of Moghul Empire and carved a Hindu kingdom in the western part of India. But to avenge all the onslaughts and victories of Shivaji, Aurangazeb caught hold of Chatrapati Shivaji’s son Sambhaji and executed him at Tulapur. But there are some heroic episodes that happened even after this sad killing.

Muslim invaders are fanatics and they always kill their enemies and show disrespect to their dead bodies. We can see such barbaric actions throughout Muslim rule in India. Hoysala King Veera Vallala was killed by Sultan Giazuddin Damghani. Moroccan explorer Ibn Batuta wrote the following in his diary in 1341:

“Treating him at first with great consideration, Giazuddin persuaded him (Veera Ballala) to part with all his riches, horses and elephants; and then had him killed and flayed. His skin was stuffed with straw and hung upon the wall of Madura, where I saw it in the same position” – Ibn Batuta, year 1341.

Later Kumara Kampanna’s wife Gangadevi wrote in her book ‘Madura Vijayam’ about the spiked heads of Pandyan soldiers on both sides of the pathways in Madurai. She was the first war correspondent in the world who accompanied her husband Kumara kampanna and wrote a live war commentary in Sanskrit. Kampanna reopened the Madurai Meenakshi temple  which was closed for forty years under Madurai Sultans rule.

Shivaji’s son cut into pieces

In the same way Aurangazeb caught Sambhaji and executed him in Tulapur and cut his body into pieces and threw them into river Bhima. This is to prevent a proper Hindu funeral. But the heroic community in the town jumped into the river and collected all the body parts, sewed them together and cremated the body with due respect according to Hindu custom. That community is called shewale (those that sewed) community until this day.

A Samadhi for Sambhaji is at Vadhu near Tulapur. There is one at Tulapur as well. This town is at the confluence of rivers Bhima and Indrayani. There is a famous temple for Shiva with the name Sangameswar. The original name of the town was Nagargaon.

Tulapur-5sangameswar

Tula means balance. There are two stories about Tula. Murarpant Jagdev was one of the important official in Adilshah’s court. When he developed some white patches on his body, he met a sage called Swami Rudranath Maharaj. When he was cured of the disease he gave lot of donations and the sage diverted everything to the temple at Tulapur. Following the sage’s order he donated 24 items equal to his weight. Tulabharam is a Hindu custom followed in all parts of India. One will weigh himself against the selected items from grains to god and donate it to a person or a temple. Guruvayur, Tirupati and other temples have big balances for it in the temples.

It is said that he donated gold to the weight of an elephant. This is the reason for the name of the town TULAPUR.

Elephant’s Weight on Planet Pluto

There is another story.

When Aurangazeb came here he wanted to cross the river Bhima in a boat. He had his elephants and horses with him. When he was worried about the weight the boat can carry, the boatman boasted that he can weigh anything under the Sun. Immediately Aurangzeb asked him whether he can tell him the weight of his elephant. The boatman told Aurangazeb that it was not all a problem. He called a big boat and asked him to put the elephant in the boat. The emperor’s servants did this. When the elephant was on the boat he marked the water level with a line on the boat. Then he asked the elephant to get out of the boat and filled the boat with heavy stones till it reached the same water line. He sent the stones to the nearby wood shop where big weights are used. They weighed all the stones and gave him the total weight. The boat man took it to the emperor and told him the correct weight of the elephant. When the emperor came to know the method he employed, he appreciated it and gave him a valuable prize. Because the boat man used the weighing balance (Tula) Nagargaon was renamed as TULAPUR.

“It is very hard, my lord”, said a convicted person at the bar to judge Barnet, “to hang a poor man for stealing a horse.”

“You are not to be hanged, sir” answered the judge, “for stealing a horse; but you are to be hanged that horses may not be stolen.”

Allen, the Quaker, waited upon the Duke of Sussex to remind him of his promise to present a petition to abolish capital punishment. The Duke did not seem to like the job, and observed that the scripture has declared,

“Whoso, sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed.”

“But please note,” replied the Quaker, “that when Cain killed Abel he was not hung for it.”

“That is true,” rejoined the Duke, “but remember Allen, there were not twelve men in the world then to make a jury”.

When Lord Bacon was chancellor of England, a witty criminal was brought before him. “Your Honour should let me go,” he observed. “We are kin. My name is Hogg, and Hogg is kin to bacon.

“Not until it’s hung,” said Bacon.

Jokes apart, ancient Sanskrit and Tamil literatures are full of death sentences by different methods. Chopping the head was the most used method by the kings. Sanskrit dramas describe the scene of criminals dragged or paraded along the streets in coloured attire, mostly red or black, to the place of execution.

Famous Tamil poet Tiruvalluvar says it is the duty of the king to weed out the criminals:-

“When the king imposes the severest penalty on a cruel murderer, it is like weeding the field to protect the crops” – Tirukkural 550

Rajaji, the First Governor General of Independent India, said that capital punishment for grievous offences is like the weeding of fields, necessary for protecting the food crops.

Indians knew that hundreds of freedom fighters were hanged by the British for being patriotic. They did it in all the places they colonised. During French revolution over 1000 people were guillotined and at the end, the person who invented the Guillotine was also guillotined. In the United States after a long discussion they came to the conclusion that the most humane method of execution is by lethal injection.  Electrical chairs are also used.

The British burnt alive thousands of women dubbing them as witches. Whoever did not believe in Christianity and practising pagan religions were called witches throughout Europe. Joan of Arc was the most famous woman who was burnt alive in France. The English clergy burnt her body three times to make sure that she is charred to ashes.

Five Types of Hindu Bath, French Bath and Sponge Bath!

Great Bath (big tank) in Mohenjadaro

Hindus are born with water and die with water; that is no ceremony is done without water. From birth to death water is essential. This is proved from the oldest book Rig Veda to the Great Bath in Mohenja daro. This torpedoes the racist Aryan-Dravidian theory put forth by the foreigners. The scholars who wrote this theory seldom take a bath; whereas Hindus must take a bath every day for daily prayers. Moreover the tropical climate force everyone to take a shower. Their holy rivers and festivals like Kumbha melas held once in four years and Maha Kumba mela held once in 12 years are proof for their love of water.

But every rule has an exception; there are circumstances where one can’t have a bath because of travel or non-availability of clean water or illness. Old people may be bed ridden at the end of their lives. They cant stand in the bath room or near the well or temple tank. Hindus have five types of bath:-

Bath= Snana

Aagneyam = Smearing ash (Vibhuti)

Vaarunam = punging in river or lake or tank

Braahmam = sprinkling water with the recitation of Mantras

Vaayavyam = smearing with gorajas (dust from the cattleshed/Gosala

Divyam = Bathing in rain with Sun in the sky

This is found in Parasara Smrti (12-9)

Snanaani pancha punyaani kiirtitaani manishiibih

Aagneyam vaarunam braahmam vaayavyam divyameva cha

stamp great bath

Manu smrti also has several couplets on bathing; but they are not about different types of bathing.

If anyone is unable to wash his cloth he can shake it in front of the Sun by saying “Vastraya fat” and it can be used as a clean cloth. All these are used only when other normal means are not available.

French bath is dousing oneself with perfume or after shave lotions without bathing. This is ironically named for the French’s well known hatred for bathing and personal hygiene. One in 29 people only take a shower once a week. Other western countries are not far behind which is evident from their racist Aryan- Dravidian theory. Had the Hindus come from far off colder places as Max Muller and Bishop Caldwell said they would not have so many water rituals and water festivals like Indra Festival.

bath tubshower

Sponge bath is used in hospitals for elderly patients and babies if they are not able to enter the bath tub or shower room. Using a sponge or a wet cloth the body is cleaned in this method.

In short, Hindus are the only people in the whole wide world who are asked to take a bath every day for religious reasons and personal hygiene.

Was Stonehenge in England a Hindu Temple?

I went to see Stonehenge in Amesbury, England, United Kingdom yesterday. This was my second trip. I went there in 1990 in a coach trip organised by the South Indian Society, UK. After quarter of a century, during my second visit yesterday, I did not find much change because it was huge rocks which withstood weather for 4500 years. But I saw more crowd now, particularly Japanese tourists, and an increase in the entrance fee; now it is fifteen pounds per head!

What is Stonehenge?

The official leaflet given to every ticket buyer says,

“Stonehenge is an ancient temple aligned on the movements of the sun. The stones were raised 4500 years ago by sophisticated pre historic people”.

Now it is maintained by English Heritage which manages over 400 historic monuments in Britain. In short, Stonehenge is a pre historic monument.

I would like to point out two key words in the leaflet: ‘Temple’ and ‘Movements of the Sun’. Both these words are used by Hindus only. Sun is worshipped ritually only by the Hindus today. Even today Brahmins worship Sun three times a day. Apart from the Hindu Brahmins we came to know that Iraq Yazidis also worship sun. They hit the headlines recently because of the attack of Muslim terrorists on them. They worshipped fire, peacock and sun like the Hindus. All of them went there from India thousands of years ago.

(Please read my earlier article —  HINDU VESTIGES IN RAQ — posted on 12 August 2014)

Now as part of the same emigration, another group of Hindus went up to Europe. They were the known as Celts. Though scholars knew the connection between Hindu Gods and Greek/Roman gods, the connection between Sanskrit and other major languages of the world, they guessed that they migrated from Europe to India. But the latest dating of Rig Veda by most of the scholars and the advanced civilisation seen in the Rig Vedic age disproved all their guesses. On the contrary Shrikant G Talageri proved that the Hindus migrated to Europe from India. Druhyus were one of them and they were called celts and their priests were called drhyus.

Sun worship is done by al the Hindus. Konarak in Orissa, Marthanda in Kashmir, Modhera in Gujrat were famous Sun Temples. There are ten more Sun Temples in different parts of India. Once again they were damaged or destroyed by the invaders.

Apart from the Sun temples, there are special shrines for Sun and Moon in most of the South Indian Temples. All the Hindus irrespective of their caste salute their departed souls on the banks of rivers and sea coasts on the day Sun takes Northward Movement (Uttarayana Punyakala) and Southward Movement (Dakshina Punyakala). This is what Stonehenge also was used for. Druids were the people who did such worship according to one group of scholars.

Druids and Stonehenge

Every year on the Summer solstice day, the neo-Druids gather at the Stonehenge and do some rituals. But the scholars who studied the Stonehenge say that the Druids came into picture long after the Stonehenge. Stonehenge finished by 1200 BCE. But we hear about the Druids only from fourth century BCE. But whether there is a connection between the Druids and the Stonehenge or not there is a connection between the Hindus and the Stonehenge and between the Hindus and the Druids. Let us look at it in two topics:

IMG_4767 IMG_4773

Hindus and Druids

Alexander Polyhistor (First Century BCE), Julius Caesar (50 BCE), Diodorous Siculus (36 BCE), Pliny the Elder (23-79 CE) and other Greek and Roman writers give us lot of information about the Druids. They were the Celtic Priests, like the Brahmins of India. They believed in

Reincarnation

Immortality of the Soul

Animal sacrifice

Ritual of Oak Tree and Mistletoe Plant (Tree Worship)

All these are Vedic beliefs. Some people say that they sacrificed human beings as well. Vedas also talk about human sacrifice (Purusamedah Yajna) and Indus Valley seal shows us human sacrifice. But no sacrificed human bones are excavated anywhere. The well known sacrifice of human beings happened only in the Middle East where hundreds and thousands of Children were sacrificed. In places like Bahrain we have excavated thousands of graves of children. But nothing like that is found in India or the Druid area.

Druids were Celtic people. They occupied Ireland, France, Britain and other European countries.

The word DRUID is interpreted in various ways. Hindus believe that they were Druhuys who were mentioned in Rig Veda very often along with four more groups. They were known as Pancha janaah (Five Peoples). They migrated to Europe via Iraq after the Dasarajna Yuddha (Ten Kings War) which is mentioned in the Rig Veda in several places.

Other explanations are Druid meant Seer, Sorcerer, a kind of Bird (wren), Tree People. Because of their belief in Atma and Punar janma, they were called Pythagorean by the Roman and Greek scholars. Greek philosopher Pythagoras repeated whatever the Upanishads said.

Another interesting point is Tree People and Seers are Sanskrit words:

Daru = Tree= Druid

Mantra Drsta/ Seer of Mantras= Druid (drus=see)

Tree worship was part of Vedic culture and Indus Valley Civilisation. Since Peepal Tree and Banyan Tree were not available in the West they adopted Oak tree.

In short, language wise, religion wise they were closer to Hindus than any other people. But like Greeks they merged their Gods with local Irish/Celtic gods and created a jumbled mythology. But still the underlying Hindu thread is discernible. People believe that the Druids worshipped sun or they did some rituals on the solstice days like the Hindus.

IMG_4777 IMG_4792

Stonehenge and Druids

A writer in the fourth century BCE refers to the existence in Britain of a magnificent circular temple dedicated to Apollo according to new Larousse Encyclopaedia of Mythology. As teachers and judges they exerted considerable influence. (Apollo is compared to Vishnu)

People who believe in Druidism go to Stonehenge and offer some rituals on 21 June every year. There were no archaeological proofs available from the Stonehenge site or from that period. But there is a religion – Judaism— based on Moses even without any historical or archaeological proof for Moses anywhere in the world. Only literary references are there. If it can be believed Druid – Stonehenge connection also can be believed.  Hindusim is older than any other religion in the world. So if the Druhyu- Druid connection is true then there is a possibility that Stonehenge- Druid connection. Rig Veda is the oldest scripture in the world. No one can ignore it because of the archaeological proof in Bogazkoy, Turkey, clay tablet with the names of  Vedic Gods which is dated to 1400 BCE.
