It is amazing to see the Rig Vedic Garuda in 2000 year old Tamil Sangam literature. Rig Veda says that the Soma plant was brought by the falcon or eagle in umpteen places. No one can explain the mystery until this day. Whether someone trained eagle or falcon to identify it and bring it or a certain mountainous tribe was called Eagles, we don’t know for sure. Later Ithihasas and Puranas, (epics and mythologies) give different stories about கருடன், Garuda, the white necked bird of prey. Even today Tamils salute it, worship it, whenever it is sighted. If it is sighted during auspicious ceremonies, it is considered a positive YES from the gods.

Paripatal gives a detailed description of Garuda, which coincides with the descriptions in the Puranas.

“A bird with curved wings, with many lines on it.

White teeth with holes full of poison.

Breaths hot air like fire, has enormous strength to attack snakes till they die,

It has another name ‘Snake Enemy’ ( in Tamil பாம்புப் பகை Paampup pakai)- Pari.13-48/50

It can keep thousand headed ஆதி சேஷன் Aadisesha in his beak, is that all? No, it wears snakes as jewels. It is wound with a snake in its belly area, it eats snake and its life

It has snakes on all its body part” s-

Murugu 148-150, Pari 13-38/40; Pari.3-59/60; Pari 4-42/48

That strong Garuda was subdued by the Red Eyed Maal Vishnu

When the Garuda lost its strength it cried

Oh Red Eyed Maal ஓ, செங்கண் மால். Pari 3-60/61

The Garuda story in the Puranas say that it released its mother from slavery. In a competition with its co wife of her husband it lost its freedom. Garuda released her mother Vinata.

Pari 3-16/17 praised the bird One who removed the difficulty of its mother.

How did Garuda do it also explained in Pari 3-16/17

Because of jealousy Kadru wanted to belittle Vinata. During one conversation Vinata said the tail of Indra s horse is white. Kadru said that it was dark. Then both had a bet. If it is not white Vinata must be a slave to Kadru. And the jealous Kadru changed the colour of the tail into black through foul means. Then Kadru put a condition for her release. If she can get her the Amrita from Indra ,Vinata will be released. Garuda did it and got its mother’s freedom back. Probably this is what the Rigvedic poets mean when they sing Garuda brought Soma plant.

If it is correct, we may say Amrita is equal to Soma and vice versa.

If one studies both the literature with its hidden meaning more mysteries may be solved.
