ஒரு முறை ஃபீல்ட் மார்ஷெல் சாம் பஹாதூர் மானெக் ஷா அஹமதாபாத்தில்
ஒரு பொதுக்கூட்டத்தில் ஆங்கிலத்தில் பேசத் தொடங்கினார். கூட்டத்தினர் அனைவரும், “குஜராத்தியில்
பேசுங்கள். குஜராத்தி மொழியில் பேசினால் தான் உங்கள் பேச்சை நாங்கள் கேட்போம்” என்று கூச்சலிட்டனர்.

பின்னர் கூட்டத்தினரை உற்றுப் பார்த்தார். பிறகு பேசத் தொடங்கினார்
இப்படி ;” நண்பர்களே! என்னுடைய நீண்ட பணிக்காலத்தில் பல போர்களைப் பார்த்து
விட்டேன். சீக்கிய ரெஜிமெண்டிலிருந்து சீக்கிய
மொழியைக் கற்றுக் கொண்டேன். மராத்தா
ரெஜிமெண்டிலிருந்து மராத்தி மொழியைக் கற்றுக் கொண்டேன். மதராஸ் வெடிமருந்து ரெஜிமெண்டிலிருந்து தமிழைக் கற்றுக்
கொண்டேன். வங்காள வெடிமருந்துப் பிரிவிலிருந்து வங்க மொழியைக் கற்றுக் கொண்டேன். பீஹார்
ரெஜிமெண்டிலிருந்து ஹிந்தி மொழியைக் கற்றுக் கொண்டேன். ஏன் கூர்க்கா ரெஜிமெண்டிலிருந்து
நேப்பாள மொழியைக் கூடக் கற்றுக் கொண்டேன். ஆனால் துரதிர்ஷ்டவசமாக குஜராத்திலிருந்து
ஒரு ராணுவ வீரன் கூட இல்லாத காரணத்தால் என்னால் குஜராத்தி மொழியைக் கற்க இயலவில்லை….”
கூட்டத்தில் குண்டூசி போட்டால் கூடக் கேட்கும்படி நிசப்தம் நிலவியது.
அடுத்து இன்னொரு சம்பவம்:
வயதில் மூத்த அமெரிக்க கனவானான ராபர்ட் வொய்டிங், 83, விமான
மூலம் பாரிஸுக்கு வந்தார். பிரெஞ்சு கஸ்டம்ஸில்
தனது பையில் தன் பாஸ்போர்ட் எங்கிருக்கிறது என்பதைப் பார்க்க அவருக்குச் சிறிது
நேரம் ஆனது.
“ஐயா! நீங்கள் இதற்கு முன்னர் பிரான்ஸுக்கு வந்திருக்கிறீர்களா?” கிண்டலாக கஸ்டம்ஸ்
அதிகாரி அவரிடம் கேட்டார்.
வொய்டிங் தான் முன்பு பிரான்ஸுக்கு வந்திருப்பதாக ஒத்துக் கொண்டார்.
“அப்படியானால் பாஸ்போர்ட்டை எடுத்துத் தயாராக வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும்
என்பதை நீங்கள் தெரிந்து வைத்திருக்க வேண்டுமே!”
“சென்ற முறை நான் இங்கு வந்த போது, அதை நான் காண்பிக்க வேண்டியதாயிருக்கவில்லை.”
“அப்படி இருக்கவே இருக்காது.பிரான்ஸில் நுழையும் போது அமெரிக்கர்கள்
தங்கள் பாஸ்போர்ட்டைக் காண்பித்தே ஆக வேண்டும்.” – கஸ்டம்ஸ்
அதிகாரி இகழ்ச்சியாகச் சொன்னார்.
அமெரிக்க கனவான் நீண்ட, ஆழ்ந்த பார்வையுடன் அந்த பிரெஞ்சு கஸ்டம்ஸ்
அதிகாரியை நோக்கினார்.
பிறகு மெதுவாகச் சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்தார் : “நல்லது. 1944இல் ‘டி
டே’ அன்று ஒமாஹா பீச்சில் காலை 4.40க்கு வந்து உங்கள் தேசத்திற்கு சுதந்திரம் அடைவதற்காக
உதவி செய்ய வந்து நான் இறங்கிய போது பாஸ்போர்ட்டைக் காண்பிக்க ஒரு பிரெஞ்சுக்காரரைக்
கூட என்னால் காண முடியவில்லை….”

Take 1:

Swept
the audience with a hard stare and replied, “Friends, I have fought many a
battle in my long career.
I have learned Punjabi from men of the Sikh Regiment; Marathi from the Maratha Regiment;
Tamil from the men of the Madras Sappers; Bengali from the men of the Bengal Sappers,
Hindi from the Bihar Regiment; and
even
Nepali from the Gurkha Regiment.
Unfortunately
there was no soldier from Gujarat from whom I could have learned Gujarati.”…
You
could have heard a pin drop.
Take 2:
Robert
Whiting, an elderly US gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs,
he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on.
“You
have been to France before, Monsieur?” the Customs officer asked sarcastically.
Mr.
Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.
“Then
you should know enough to have your passport ready.” The American said, “The
last time I was here, I didn’t have to show it.”
“Impossible.
Americans always have to show their passports on arrival in France !” the Customs
officer sneered.
The
American senior gave the Frenchman a long, hard look. Then he quietly
explained, “Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach, at 4:40am, on D-Day in
1944, to help liberate your country, I couldn’t find a single Frenchman to show
a passport to….”
