ஏதேனும் ஒரு காரியம் நிறைவேறுமா இல்லையா என்பதை அறிய நமது முன்னோர்கள் பல வழிகளைக் கையாண்டனர். ஜோதிடரிடம் ஜாதகத்தையோ, கைரேகையையோ காட்டி பலன் அறிவது அல்லது ரோட்டில் “சோசியம் பார்க்கல்லியோ, சோசியம்!” என்று கூவிக்கொண்டுவரும் நரிக்குறத்தி அல்லது குறிபார்க்கும் பெண்ணிடம் கேட்பது, அல்லது கோவில் மதில்சுவரை ஒட்டிக் கடை போட்டுள்ள கிளி ஜோதிடனிடம் கேட்பது என்று பல வழிகள் உண்டு. ஆனால் இதற்கு பணம் கொடுக்கவெண்டும்.

வீட்டிற்குள்ளேயே சுவாமி படத்துக்கு முன்னால் சீட்டு எழுதிப் போட்டு, உண்டா, இல்லையா? செய்யலாமா, செய்யக்கூடாதா? என்றும் பார்ப்பதுண்டு. நாம் படிக்கும் தேவாரம், திவ்யப் பிரபந்தம், ராமாயணம், பகவத் கீதை முதலிய புனித நூல்களில் ஒரு கயிறு அல்லது நூலை நுழைத்து அந்தப் பக்கத்திலுள்ள செய்தியின் படி சுபமா, அசுபமா என்று அறிவதுமுண்டு. இந்த நூல் பார்க்கும் முறை பற்றியும் கிளி ஜோதிடம் பற்றியும் ஏற்கனவே கட்டுரை எழுதிவிட்டேன்.

நமது பஞ்சாங்கத்தில் சிறிதாக, சீதா-ராம சக்கரங்கள் உண்டு. பலரும் பார்த்த்திருப்பீர்கள். ஆனால் அதில் ‘கலகம்’, ‘நாசம்’ போன்ற சொற்கள் நம்மை மிரட்டுவதால் பலரும் அதைத் தொடுவதில்லை. இதன் பெரிய வடிவம்தான் இந்த தொடுகுறி சாஸ்திரம். இந்தப் புத்தகத்தை லண்டன் பிரிட்டிஷ் லைப்ரரியில் கண்டேன். 16 பக்கம் என்பதால் புத்தகம் முழுதையும் ‘காப்பி’ எடுத்தேன். இது பஞ்ச பாண்டவர்களில் சோதிடத்தில் வல்லவனான சகதேவன் அருளியது என்று புத்தகத்திலுள்ள பாடல் கூறும்.

நம்பிக்கையுடையோர், குளித்துவிட்டு மடியாக/சுத்தமாக, பூஜை அறை அல்லது கோவிலில் ஒரு கட்டத்தைத் தொட்டு அதற்கான பலனை அறியலாம். சாதகமான விடை வராவிடில் கடுமையான பிரார்த்தனைக்குப் பின்னர் மீண்டும் ஒரு முறைதொட்டுப் பார்க்கலாம். அப்பொழுதும் நாம் எதிர்பார்க்கும் நல்ல சகுனம்/ பதில் கிடைக்காவிடில், “கடவுளே நீ தருவதை நான் ஏற்கிறேன், அது என்னை எந்த விதத்திலும் பாதிக்காமல் தடு அல்லது அதை புல்லென மதிக்கும் இரும்பு மனத்தை எனக்கருளுவாயாக” என்று மனமாறப் பிரார்த்திக்கலாம். அர்ஜுனன் மீது ஏவப்பட்ட பிரம்மாஸ்திரத்தை, கண்ண பிரான் அருளால், தலைக்கு வந்தது தலைப் பாகையுடன் (கிரீடத்துடன்) போனது என்று தடுத்தாட்கொண்டது போல நமக்கும் கண்ணன் அருள் கிட்டும்.

மொத்தம் 64 கட்டங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. ஏதேனும் ஒன்றைக் கண்ணை மூடிக்கொண்டு தொடலாம் அல்லது ஒரு சிறுவனைக் கொண்டு தொடச் சொல்லலாம். அல்லது ஜோதிடம் கேட்க வருவோரை 111 அல்லது அதற்கு மேலே ஒரு எண்ணைச் சொல்லும்படி கேட்கலாம். பின்னர் ஒவ்வொரு எண்ணுக்குமுள்ள பாடலைப் படிக்கவும். சுருக்கமான பொருளும் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுளது.

சம்மன் அனுப்பியும் சாமிநாத சாஸ்திரி கோர்ட்டுக்கு வராததற்கு ஜோதிடமே காரணம்!

பிரிட்டிஷ் லைப்ரரியில் 1923 ஆம் ஆண்டில் அச்சிடப்பட்ட ‘தனபாக்கியம் அல்லது அகட விகட பொக்கிஷம்’ என்ற புத்தகத்தைப் பார்த்தேன். அதில் ஒரு நகைச்சுவை (ஹாஸ்ய) கட்டம். சாமிநாத சாஸ்திரி என்பவர், நீதிமன்ற சம்மன் கிடைத்தும் ஏன் கோர்ட்டுக்கு வரவில்லை என்று சாக்குப்போக்கு சொல்லுகிறார். இது அந்தக் காலத்தில் இருந்த ஜோதிட, சகுன சாஸ்திர நம்பிக்கைகளைக் காட்டுவதால், அந்தப் பக்கங்களை மட்டும் கீழே கொடுக்கிறேன். இப்பொழுதும், பஞ்சாங்கத்திலும் சில நாட்காட்டி காலண்டர்களிலும் இந்த விஷயங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. பலருக்கும் புரிவதில்லை; பலர் நம்புவதில்லை; இன்னும் பலர் நம்பினாலும் செயல் ரீதியில் பின்பற்றுவது சாத்தியப்படுவதில்லை:

Someone asked whether a sage could make divination. Yang Hsiung replied that a sage could certainly make divination about Heaven and Earth. If that is so, continued, the questioner, what is the difference between the sage and the astrologer?

What is Astrology? Persians’ View

If you become an astrologer, constrain yourself to take great pains over mathematics. The science of judicial astrology is a many-sided one, and perfect justice, without the commission of any error, cannot be done to it, there being nobody so accurate that he never commits an error. Be that as it may, the fruit of astrology is prognostication, and when you have constructed an almanac the advantage of it lies in its prognostications. Since, therefore, prognostications are essential, endeavour to become well acquainted with their principles and be competent in the art of almanac making. It is only when the star almanac is exact and the ascendant star rightly identified that prognostication is accurate.

A new astrology book by the British astrologer Russell Grant has been published a few months ago. This is a colouring book! One may wonder what astrology has to do with colouring. Is it not children’s work?

I bought it for six pounds through amazon.co.uk. Though I wouldn’t recommend anyone to buy it, it features a novel approach to astrology.

Sometime ago I read an interview by Russell grant in the Metro newspaper of London. His views on astrology are strange and interesting.

Astrology can’t predict!

When we go to an astrologer we always ask him questions about our future. But Russell Grant says astrology can’t predict your future. You may wonder then what else astrology does.

Here are some of the questions about his new book “Art of Astrology”

What is your involvement with the book? You haven’t drawn the pictures, right?

Russell: No, but I wrote everything the most important thing was the section about colour. As someone who has used colour all his life – my father was a set designer at Pinewood – I wanted to include the information about colours and what they mean.

What is the point of adult colouring book?

It is about mindfulness. It concentrates the mid—you can forget your anxieties and worries because you are fully focussed on what you are doing in that moment.

(Then some questions about his period of depression and how he came out of it.)

How did you get into astrology?

As a hobby. I was an actor doing a lot of theatre and some TV. I bought a book called Teach yourself Astrology as research at first. I thought it was a load of rubbish – I thought surely humanity is not divided into 12 signs—but when you study it you realise it is not about predictions. You don’t tell the future, it’s about self-potential and the ability to unlock the creative energy within you. Then in 11978 I took part in a presentation about astrology at the Ideal Home Exhibition. I met the Queen Mother, who was supposed to talk to me for three minutes, but the conversation lasted 33 minutes. The next day there was a big picture in the paper calling me ‘astrologer royal’ I never described myself in that way – it was a newspaper headline. That is how it took over my life and it was never meant to.

If astrology isn’t about prediction what is it?

In the paper you can use only sun signs. The whole chart works on an individual’s date, time and place of birth, which is unique to them. When someone comes to me for advice they are not asking if they are going to meet a tall dark stranger, they are saying, “I am restless – is now the time to move on? And I will say ‘yes, it is’ or may be ‘wait a while’, I could say. ‘This is great time to go off and live in America, but they can say they don’t want to. We all have free will and choice. A proper astrologer is there to say this is a good time or it is not. If you look at life, what is it all about? Trends and cycles.

So is there any point in reading horoscopes in newspapers?

It will give you a nugget if it is written by a proper astrologer – it may inspire you. If it is written by a non- astrologer there is no point. Before e mail existed I know of some instances where newspapers – none that I wrote for- had made them up if the horoscope hadn’t arrived in the post in time.

“In the last 50 years or so I have been involved in teaching and studying Astrology, people seem to have become more and more confused about what it actually is.

The problem lies, in part, with the incredible growth of the internet and social media, and the mixed messages they have spread.

Today, people have access to so many sources, from print articles to websites and apps dedicated to ‘predicting the future’ via ‘star signs’, that there has been a widespread misconception that this is astrology’s sole purpose. It might surprise you to know that astrology does not predict.

I believe that Astrology is a key, a tool, a passport that unlocks the door to a detailed understanding of who we are, what forces are at work within us and we can capitalise on them. Essentially Astrology tells us what we as individuals can do and what we are capable of it reveals our potential. Once we understand this, we are free to fulfil that potential to the absolute maximum.

Colouring book

The book has got lot of illustrations running to 90 pages under 12 zodiac signs. At the end of the book there is colourscopes running to 20 pages.

Russell says

Start playing with colours. Once you have finished your art work, you might find one colour dominates all others; make a note of the colours that standout and also those colours that are missing. One you have listed the colours that dominate, read its interpretation in my rainbow guide. Ask yourself: is something I am missing in my personality of life? You might find it strikes a chord, as the colour sparks off something inside you, perhaps filling in spiritual, psychological or personality link.

My summary:- So it is basically a colouring book with lot of information on 12 signs and the rainbow guide at the end will reveal your personality when you finished colouring!

Hindus have divided the zodiac into 12 signs starting with Aries, Taurus… and the Chinese have divided their zodiac into 12 signs with 12 animals starting with rat and finishing with pig. Each sign is allocated one year and the year of Monkey begins on 8^th February 2016.

Chinese have very strong belief in astrology in spite of the cultural revolution of Mao and the communist rule. My recent tour in Hong Kong and Australia for two weeks gave me a new insight in to their belief and the big business of astrology. Tourists, particularly from the Chinese community spend lot of money to buy the lucky symbols.

1.Laughing Buddha is considered a lucky symbol and every Chinese house has one of these figures. The largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere, Nan Tien temple has a huge laughing Buddha at the entrance.

2.Chinese believe in lucky symbols and those lucky symbols in red colour ribbons are sold throughout Hong Kong. I have seen it hung in many houses and restaurants I visited during my trip. Hong Kong vendors sell these in their road side stalls.

The 12 animal zodiac signs are kept even in tourist spots like Peak Tram attraction in Hong Kong.

4.Even the British Airways desk at the Hong Kong International airport has displayed a big monkey to welcome the Chinese community who are going to celebrate year of monkey in a weeks’ time on 8^th February 2016.

I went to the famous Wong Tai Sin temple in Hong Kong which is known as a wish fulfilling temple. Three great religions of Buddha, Tao and Confucius have their shrines there. The huge temple and the attached ornamental garden have Fengsui designed buildings.

Twelve zodiac animals are depicted with huge statues under which people stand and wish that their dreams are fulfilled. If a person born under rat sign comes, he goes to the rat sign and stands below it and wish his dreams come true. Wong was a great saint of fifth century CE. A big crowd was there in the morning when I visited the temple.

5.Kau cim is one of the practices used to find one’s future. Believers buy a bamboo tube in which incense sticks are there. One kneels before the temple and shakes it till an incense stick falls down. One will exchange it for a paper with the same number on the fallen stick. If one takes it to a soothsayer, that person will interpret it and tell your future. There are lot of soothsayer stalls in the vicinity.

The biggest Buddhist temple known as Nan Tien temple is in Wollongong, fifty miles from Sydney in Australia. It has a lucky tree at which people throw lucky ribbons. Whoever throws the ribbon will get what he or she wants. The temple itself sells the red ribbons. We also bought two ribbons and threw them at the Kalpaka Vrksha.

Just outside the huge temple, the twelve animal signs stand in open air, with the predictions written in Chinese and English. Tourists throng these places to take photos with their respective signs.

Nan Tien temple is very big and it has got Buddha statues at three levels. In the upper two floors Five Buddhas and Three Buddhas are in huge forms. There is dress code. A western woman was refused entry because she has not covered her body fully. Top floor has five huge colourful Buddha statues. Temple sells vegetarian food. The entire complex is no smoking, no alcohol, No meat area.

At the top of the hill there is a huge bell. Anyone goes there rings the bell with their wishes in mind. So we see this type of belief everywhere. The Chinese community’s enthusiastic following proves that they strongly believe in it.

இந்துக்கள், ராசிச் சக்கரத்தை மேஷ, ரிஷபம் முதலிய 12 ராசிகளாகப் பிரித்து, அதனடிப்படையில் பொதுப் பலன்களைக் காண்கிறார்கள். இன்றும் கூட ஆங்கில, தமிழ் பத்திரிக்கைகள் ஜோதிடப் பலன் கூறும் பகுதிகளை வெளியிடுகின்றன. இது போலவே சீனர்கள் ராசிச் சக்கரத்தை 12 ஆகப் பிரித்து அவைகளுக்கு பிராணிகளின் பெயர்களைக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்கள். பிப்ரவரி 8, 2016 ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் ஓராண்டு, குரங்கு ராசியின் கீழ் வருகிறது. இதற்கான பலன்கள் சீனப் பத்திரிக்கைகளில் உள்ளன.

நான் ஜனவரி 2016ல் ஹாங்காங்கிலும் ஆஸ்திரேலியாவிலும் 16 நாட்கள் சுற்றுப் பயணம் செய்தபோது கண்ட காட்சிகளை மட்டும் எழுதுகிறேன்.

1.நான் சாப்பிடப் போன பெரும்பாலான வீடுகளிலும், உணவு விடுதிகளிலும் சிவப்பு நிற ரிப்பனில் சீன எழுத்துக்கள் பொறிக்கப்பட்ட அதிர்ஷ்டப் பட்டைகள் தொங்கின. எனது குடும்பத்தினரும், என்றாவது ஒரு நாள் லாட்டரி பரிசு கிடைக்கும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் ஹாங்காங் மார்க்கெட்டில் சில அதிர்ஷ்ட சின்னங்களை விலைக்கு வாங்கினர்.

எல்லாருடைய வீடுகளிலும் கடையிலும் சிரிக்கும் புத்தர் சிலைகள் இருக்கின்றன. இதுவும் ஒரு அதிர்ஷ்டச் சின்னம்.

ஹாங்காங்கில் பெரிய அலங்காரத் தோட்டத்துடன் உள்ள புகழ்பெற்ற Wong Tai Sin கோவிலுக்குப் போனோம். வாங் டாய் என்பவர் 1600 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் வாழ்ந்த ஒரு புனிதர். அவர் பெயரில் இக்கோவில் இருந்தாலும், மும்மதத்தினரின் சின்னங்கள், சிலைகள் இங்கே உள்ளன. அங்கு கன்பூஷியஸ், டாவோ, புத்தர் போன்ற பெரியோர்களை வணங்குகின்றனர். கோவிலுக்கு வெளியே பிரகாரத்தில் 12 ராசிகளைக் குறிக்கும் 12 பிராணிகளும் இரண்டு ஆள் உயரத்துக்கு சிலைகளாக வடிவமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. அதன் கீழ், அந்தந்த ராசிக்காரர்கள் நின்று தனது விருப்பத்தைச் சொன்னால், அது நிறைவேறும் என்ற நம்பிக்கை உள்ளது. இதன் காரணமாக எல்லா சீனர்களும் அதன் கீழ் நின்று புகைப்படம் எடுத்துக் கொண்டனர்.

இங்கு 5 பெங்சுயி சின்னங்களும் (உலோகம், மரம், நிலம், நீர், தீ) இருக்கின்றன. மேலும் கோவிலுக்கு வெளியே குறிசொல்லுவோர் கடைகளும் இருக்கின்றன. அங்கு போய், காசு கொடுத்து சோதிடம் கேட்கலாம். மூன்று முனிவர் மண்டபம், கன்பூசியஸ் மண்டபம் ஆகியன உள்ளன.

கோவிலுக்கு வருவோர் மண்டியிட்டு, ஊதுவத்தி கொளுத்தி வழிபடுவர். நம்பிக்கையுடையோர் ‘கௌசிம்’ முறையில் ஜோதிடம் பார்ப்பர். ஒரு மூங்கில் குழாயிலுள்ள அதிர்ஷ்டக் குச்சிகள் விழுமாறு குலுக்குவர். அப்படிக் குலுக்குபவர், தன் மனதில் என்ன வேண்டுமோ அதை நினைத்துக் குலுக்குவர். முதலில் விழும் குச்சியைக் கொடுத்து அதே நம்பருள்ள ஒரு சீட்டை வாங்குவர். அதைசோதிடரிடம் காட்டினால் அவர் அதற்கு விளக்க்ம் சொல்லுவார். நம்மூரில் கிளி எடுத்துக் கொடுக்கும் கார்டை, ஒரு கிளி ஜோசியன் படித்து விளக்குவது போல இது.

3.ஆஸ்திரேலியாவில் மிகப் பெரிய புத்தர் கோவில் இருக்கிறது. பூமியின் தென்பகுதியில் மிகப்பெரிய கோவில் இந்த நான் டியன் Nan Tien Temple கோவில்தான். இது சிட்னி நகரிலிருந்து 50 மைல் தொலைவில் உல்லாங்காங் என்னுமிடத்தில் இருக்கிறது. மூன்று அடுக்குகளில் அமைந்துள்ள இந்தக் கோவிலில் ஒரு புத்தர், 3 புத்தர்கள், 5 புத்தர்கள் என்று வெவ்வேறு சந்நிதிகள் உள்ளன. மேலேயுள்ள இரண்டு இடங்களிலும் செருப்புகள் அணியக்கூடாது. மற்ற எல்லா புத்தர் கோவில்களிலும் செருப்புகளை அணிந்தவாறு வழிபடலாம்.

இங்கும் சரி, ஹாங்காங் புத்தர் கோவிலிலும் சரி ஏராளமான கூட்டம். ஹாங்காங் கோவிலில் ஜேப்படித் திருடர்கள் (பிக் பாக்கெட்) ஜாக்கிரதை என்று ஒலிபெருக்கியில் அறிவித்துக் கொண்டே இருக்கின்றனர்.

4.சிட்னி அருகிலுள்ள கோவிலில் சீனர்களின் ஜோதிட நம்பிக்கையை மேலும் காண முடிந்தது. கற்பக மரம் போல விருப்பத்தைப் பூர்த்தி செய்யும் ஒரு மரம் இருக்கிறது. கோவிலில் விற்கும் சிவப்பு நிற ரிப்பனை பத்து டாலர் கொடுத்து வாங்கி அந்த மரத்தின் மீது எறிகிறார்கள். இப்படிச் செய்தால் நீங்கள் நினைத்த காரியம் வெற்றி பெறும். நாங்களும் 20 டாலருக்கு ரிப்பன் வாங்கி எறிந்தோம். லாட்டரி பரிசு விழுந்தால் உங்களுக்கும் சொல்லுவேன். நீங்களும் செய்யலாம்.

5.கோவிலுக்கு வெளியேயுள்ள திறந்த வெளியில் சீன ராசிச் சக்கரத்தின் 12 பிராணிகளும் பெரிய – ஆளுயர – பொம்மைகளாக நிற்கின்றன. அதன் கீழ் சீன மொழியிலும், ஆங்கிலத்திலும் ஒவ்வொரு ராசிக்கான பலன்களும் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளன. அவரவர்கள் தனது ராசிக்கான பிராணியின் கீழ் நின்று புகைப்படம் எடுத்துக் கொண்டனர்.

சீனர்கள், ஜோதிட நம்பிக்கைக்காக எவ்வளவு செலவழிக்கின்றனர் என்பதை நினைத்தால் வியப்பாக இருக்கிறது. கம்யூனிசமோ, மாவோவின் கலாசாரப் புரட்சியோ, அவர்களின் நம்பிக்கையை அசைக்கவில்லை.

நட்சத்திரப் பாடல்

தமிழ் மக்களின் அன்றாட வாழ்வில் 27 நட்சத்திரங்கள் தொன்று தொட்டு இடம் பெற்று வந்துள்ளன. இந்த நட்சத்திரங்களைப் புலவர்கள் தம் பாடல்கள் பலவற்றில் பல்வேறு விதமாகக் கையாண்டுள்ளனர். மிக சுவாரசியமான பாடல்கள் அவை.

மதுரகவிராயர் என்றொரு புலவர் இருந்தார். அவர் இளம் பெண் ஒருத்தியைக் கண்டு மோகித்தார். அப்போது அவருக்கு ஞாபகம் வந்தது 27 நட்சத்திரங்களின் ஒன்றின் பெயர். அதைப் பாடலில் சூசகமாகப் பயன்படுத்திப் பாடலை இயற்றினார்.

மொய் வனத்தில் தாவும் தனி மிருகம் வேங்கையாகும் வேங்கைக்கு இன்னொரு சொல் பொன் என்பதாகும். என்னிடம் தங்கமும் இல்லை.

நேரா வளையா நடை அன்னத்திற்கே உரியது. அந்த அன்னமும் என்னிடம் இல்லை.

இன்னொரு பாடலில் 12 ராசிகளையும் அமைத்துப் பாடியுள்ளார் ஆசுகவிப் புலவர் கவி காளமேகம்.

அவரிம் ஒருவர் சவால் விடுத்தார். சவால் விடுத்தவரோ சாதாரணமானவர் இல்லை. மன்னரிடம் பாடல் பாடி அவன் வியந்து தண்டிகை பரிசை அளித்தால் அவர் சிறந்த தண்டிகைப் புலவர் எனப்படுவார். அப்படிப்பட்ட அருமையான 64 தண்டிகைப் புலவர்களில் அவரும் ஒருவர்.

அவர் போட்ட நிபந்தனைகள் இவை:

ஒரு வெண்பா பாட வேண்டும். அதன் முதல் சீராக பகருங்கால் (சொல்லப் போனால்) என்று வர வேண்டும். இறுதியிலோ வசையறு மிராசி வளம் என்று ஈற்றடி (கடைசி அடி) அமைய வேண்டும். இடையில் 12 ராசிகளின் பெயர்கள் வரவேண்டும். ராசிகளுக்கு அடைமொழிகள் எதுவும் இருக்கக் கூடாது.

கடினமான போட்டி தான். கவிஞருக்கு கிடைத்திருப்பது இரண்டே முக்கால் அடி தான். விட்டாரா காளமேகம்.

தமிழ் என்னும் விந்தையில் உலக மொழிகளில் இல்லாதபடி நட்சத்திரப் பாடல்கள் ஏராளம் உள்ளன.

Ashmolean Museum of Oxford University and British Museum in London hold over 1000 year old Nava Graha statues and dolls with the details of their provenance. Navagrahas are worshipped by Hindus until today. All the South Indian temples have special enclave for the Nine Planetary Deities. Sani or Saturn is the most sought after deity because every Hindu who believes in astrology is scared of the evil influence of the planet. Every Tamil Nadu temple gets a big crowd in the Navagraha shrine, particularly on saturdays.

Hindu Brahmins offer water oblations to Navagrahas thrice a day in their Sandhya vandhana. So it must be a deep rooted Vedic custom. Tamil saint Sambandhar sang about it in seventh century. He starts from Sun and finishes with Saturn in his Thevaram hymn. Some scholars wrote that this nine planetary system was imported from Greece which is not correct. None could have squeezed it into Vedic custom or Thevara Hymns. More over Varahamihira who dealt with it in his Brahat Jataka and Brhat Samhita says that he has been just summarising what his forefathers or scholars of eternity wrote in bulky volumes.

Hindus have incorporated their scientific knowledge into the hymns of hymns on Navargraha. I have already given it in my articles. Just a recap of important points from my previous article “ Hindus’ Future Predictions part 1 and 2 posted on May 20, 2012:

Venus and Rain: Tamil literature and Sanskrit literature associate Venus with the rains. Astronomers and meteorologists will discover that Venus has a link with the rains in future. If Venus goes towards south, the world will have a drought (going south is an astrological jargon to denote appearing towards south). The Vedas and Tamil literature talk about twelve year long droughts. So the scientists will find out that the position of Venus has an impact on world’s weather.

We know that the sun has a big role in the growth of plants. We read plants make food by photosynthesis using sun light. But Sanskrit literature is very clear and loud in saying moon’s rays give energy to the plants. So biologists will find out soon the link between the moon and the plants. But Hindus never denied Sun’s role.

Sanskrit Navagraha Stotras (hymns on nine heavenly bodies) gives the relationship between the planets. Hindus have already found out that Jupiter is the largest and heaviest planet and named it GURU appropriately. Guru means leader, teacher and heavy in Sanskrit. Mars is called Red planet by Tamil and Sanskrit poets. Mars is already confirmed red by scientists. Mars is called Bhumi Puthra/ son of earth. Scientists also believe Mars may have water and life.

Saturn is called a black planet by Sangam Tamil poets and Sanskrit poets (Maim meen in Tamil and Neela in Sanskrit). Saturn will be confirmed black by scientists in future. It is also called chaya puthra (son of shadow as well as son of sun). Hindus said that Saturn has a son called Manthi. It corresponds to the ring (Mantle) around it.

Planet Mercury is called “son of moon”. Science is yet to prove the link between the two heavenly bodies. Probably mercury came into existence because of moon. When moon or/ and another body collided with earth mercury might have born. Science will prove Hindus are right about mercury .

Venus is described as the “son of sun”. Scientists will prove the link between the sun and Venus. We already know that Venus is the brightest object in the sky next to sun and moon. It is always with the sun (it can be seen either at dawn or at sunset).

I pray to Venus, the utimate preceptor of demons,

I pray to Saturn, the slow moving, born of Shade and

I pray to Rahu, having half a body, of great bravery,

the eclipser of the Moon and the Sun, born of

I pray to Ketu, who has the appearance of Palaasha

flower, the head of stars and planets, fierce and

Those who read the song sung by VyAsa, will be joyous,

sovereign and powerful, and will succeed in appeasing

obstacles, occurring by day or by night.

Aishwarya-matulaam tesham Aarogyam Pushti-vardhanam

Bad dreams of men, women and kings alike will be

destroyed and they will be endowed with unparalleled

riches, good health and enhancing nourishment.

Taa-sarvaa-prashamam-yaanti Vyaso-bhrute-na-samshayaha

All the pain, devastation caused by fire, planets and

stars will be of the past, so spoke VyAsa,

composed by Vyasa.

From India’s Northernmost Himalayas to the Southernmost Kanyakumari, the beliefs were same. This is attested by the 2000 year old Sangam Tamil Literature and the earlier 3700 year old Vedic Sanskrit literature. They all believed that the behaviour of animals and birds as well as natural phenomena can predict future. Some of their beliefs have some scientific basis. We see the strange behaviour of animals and birds before natural catastrophes such as big storm or Tsunami or earth quakes. Hindus linked the black bird crow with the departed souls which is in Sangam Tamil literature and earlier Sanskrit literature. Tamils linked the arrival of the guests with crowing. When the housewives cook special dishes naturally the good smell will attract the crows around the house. But many of their beliefs cannot be explained scientifically. This type of belief is seen around the world.

Vedic Hindus used the fire of the Sacrifice, flight of birds, crying of animals, position of the planets, falling of comets and meteors, natural phenomena, sneezing, fluttering/twitching of eyes, etc. Mahabharata has got lot of references to the wind, meteors and the positions of the planets before the great Bharata war.

Sumerian, Babylonian Beliefs

Divination was widely used in Mesopotamia. It is based on the idea that to some extent the future is predetermined; it can be interpreted/divined by those with specialist knowledge. Sumerians used extispicy i.e.the liver, lungs or the colon spiral of specially slaughtered young ram were inspected for peculiarities during a nocturnal rite (Etruscans also used the liver for predictions).

The study of celestial omens was more popular and it survived for long. Observation of birds was practised like India and Italy/Etruscan. Divination played an important part in decision making. It was used before building a temple, military expedition, for king’s wellbeing and safety, fortune telling and weather forecasting.

(In my home town in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, even the rain and harvest are forecast by the colour of the dress the god Azakar/Perumal wears during Chitra festival).

Hittites also used Extispicy. Anatolians used old women like the Greeks and Tamils, for prediting.

Birds Used for Prediction

Boulon is the word for bird. It is similar to PUl in Tamil.

Tamils believed that flights of birds or their sounds (calls) can predict good and bad things that is going to happen. Even today their traditional calendars (Panchang) publish those details every year. No two cultures in the world come so close as the Tamils and the Etruscans. Etruscans had such a calendar.

Etruscans believed that Gods speak to mortals through nature. They even interpreted thunder and lightning. This is in the Hindu Upanishads. The famous parable of Three “Da” sounds of Thunder is in the Upanishads. Another story about five elements trying to lift a blade of grass is also in the Upanishads.

Etruscans used livers of sacrificed animals to find their future. Mesopotamians had similar beliefs. Like Vastu Shastra allocate different corners for different Gods, they have different areas for different gods in the liver. A Bronze model of a sheep’s liver from Piacenza (150 BC) gives 52 names of divinities, mostly abbreviates. Many of them were repeated.
