Kalidasa is one of the greatest poets of India. He is the most famous poet of ancient India. He has used over 1000 apt similes in his seven works. And there are quotations in his works which are used by the Sanskrit knowing general public in their every day conversations; his seven works are

Stories behind Five Tamil Proverbs

Tamil language is rich in proverbs. There are more than 20,000 proverbs. Percival, Rev.J.Lazarus and Herman Jensen had compiled and published them hundred years ago. Later lot of books appeared in Tamil; but there are lot of proverbs not included in these volumes. There is scope for lot of research as well. They have to be compiled subject wise and compared with proverbs in other Indian languages.

 

Some of the proverbs have some stories or interesting anecdotes behind them. I have given below only five proverbs with the stories behind them. It can be compared with proverbs in other Indian languages.

1.His own deeds will burn him, and a cake will burn the house

(Tan vinai tannaich chudum, Ottappam veettaich chudum)

Pattainathu Adikal was a great saint and poet. He used to eat with men of all castes. High caste Hindus did not do such thing in his days. So when his sister saw this, she was very angry. She tried to change his ways; but Pattinathar saw every one equal following the Upanishadic dictum Sarvam Brahma Mayam ( God is in everything), tat tvam Asi (You are That) and Isavasyam Idam Sarvam….. (Everything animate or inanimate that is within the universe is controlled and owned by the Lord).

But his sister was not convinced with his explanation or behaviour. She thought him better dead and so baked a cake with poison in it and gave it to him. Hindu saints had power to know what was happening around them. Knowing his sister’s bad intention and took the cake and threw it on the roof of her house. And he said the words in the proverb. By a miracle it set the house on fire. Thus the evil woman’s plan was spoiled.

2.The Old Woman finished her Ten miles, and so did the Horse

(Kizaviyum Kadam, Kuthiraiyum Kadam);kadam is ten miles.

The story is that a man having performed the proper religious ceremonies hastily mounted his horse and set off for heaven. At the same time an old woman performed some ceremonies, with all her heart slowly and carefully, and her real piety brought her to heaven before the man on horseback.

There is an equivalent English saying, “God knows well which the best pilgrims are”.

Actually this happened in the case of Avvaiyar and Sundaramurthy Nayanar. When Sundaramurthy Nayanar and Cheraman Perumal Nayanar travelled to heaven using their elephant and horse, Avvaiyar was there before the two devotes who were using the fast track. When they asked how come that old lady was before them, she told them that she prayed to Lord Ganesh (elephant headed God) who lifted her with his trunk and placed her at the entrance of the heaven. This proverb covers that anecdote as well.

3.To you Bebe, and to your father Bebe

(Unakkum Bebe, unga Appanukkum Bebe)

A man pressed by his creditors was advised by a friend, to whom also he owned money, to escape from their importunities by feigning madness. The debtor accordingly did so replying to them all like a madman. He just said bebe, which is a nonsense word without any meaning. The plan was successful and the creditors were cheated. Then the friend asked that the debt due to himself should be paid. But he himself received the treatment he had advised the deceitful debtor to use to others. The proverb is also used about children who have no respect for others.

Equivalent English proverbs:

Trickery comes back to its own master

He falls into the pit, who leads another into it.

4.This is the law of my caste, and this is the law of my belly

(Ithu en Kulacharam, Ithu en vayitracharam)

Potters are predominantly Saivaites. But the potters in Sri Rangam were asked by the Vaishnavaites to put the Vaishnava mark on their foreheads; otherwise the Brahmins won’t buy their pots for the temple. One clever potter, having considered this difficulty, after making the Saivaite symbol (Vibhuti/Holy Ash) on his forehead made a big Vaishnava mark on his stomach. When rebuked for so doing by a Brahmin, he replied as above.

5.Like the jester that was bitten by a snake

(Pakadiyai Pambu Kadithathu Pola)

Applied to one who so often tells lies that if he happen to speak the truth no one will believe him. Or to a child that constantly feign sickness to avoid going to school, and is not believed to be ill when it is really sick. Once the jester was bitten by a snake and he cried for help. No one believed him. They thought he was just joking. It is similar to Crying Wolf Story in Aesop fables.

We have a similar story in India. A boy shouted for help saying that the tiger was coming. When the villagers gathered with all the weapons he was just laughing. He did it a few times and one day he encountered a real tiger. When he cried for help no one came forward thinking that he was trying to fool them once more. The tiger mauled the boy to death.

படித்த இளஞர்களை ஒன்றுதிரட்டி இணையுங்கள். புல்லைக்கூட கயிறாகத் திரித்துப் பின்னிப் இணைத்தால் அதைகொண்டு மத யானையையும் கட்டிப் போட்டுவிட முடியும் என்பதை நினைவிற் கொள்ளுங்கள் -–பக்கம் 207

 

ஜூன் 4 வியாழக்கிழமை

பெரிய கோப அலை மனதில் எழுந்தால் அதற்கு எதிரிடையான ஒரு அலையை எழுப்புவதால் கோபத்தைக் கட்டுப் படுத்தலாம்.அப்பொழுது அன்பைப் பற்றி நினைக்க வேண்டும். குடும்பத்தில் கணவன் மனைவி இடையே கடும் கோபம் நிலவும் நேரத்தில் குழந்தை உள்ளே வருகிறது. குழந்தையை அவள் அணைத்து முத்தமிடுகிறாள். அங்கே  பழைய கோப அலை செத்துப் போய் புதிய அன்பு அலை எழுகிறது. –பக்கம் 203

 

ஜூன் 5 வெள்ளிக்கிழமை

தோல்விகள் வாழ்க்கையை அழகு பண்ணுகின்றன. அவையின்றி வாழ்வு எப்படி இருக்கும்? போராட்டங்கள் இல்லை என்றால் வாழ்க்கையே வாழத் தகுதி அற்றதாகிவிடும். வாழ்க்கையாகிற கவிதை எங்கே இருக்கும்? –பக்கம் 194

ஜூன் 6 சனிக்கிழமை

சோதிடம், ரகசிய வித்தைகள் இவற்றை எல்லாம் நாடுவது பொதுவாக பலவீனமான மனதின் அறிகுறி. ஆகவே இப்படி எண்ணம் வரும்போது ஒரு டாக்டரிடம் உடம்பைக் காட்டி, நல்ல உணவு சாப்பிட்டுவிட்டு, ஓய்வெடுத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்–பக்கம் 191

 

ஜூன் 7 ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமை

ஓவியம் தீட்டுகிறவன், தான் என்ற அஹங்காரத்தை இழந்துவிட்டுத் தனது ஓவியத்தில் மூழ்கி விடுவானாயின், அவனால் உன்னதமான ஓவியங்களைத் தீட்டமுடியும். யோகத்தின் மூலம் இறைவனுடன் ஒன்றிவிட்ட மனிதன் தன்னலம் கருத மாட்டான். எல்லாக் காரியங்களையும் இப்படித்தான் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று கீதை உபதேசிக்கிறது. –பக்கம் 185

 

ஜூன் 8 திங்கட்கிழமை

பண ஆசையோ, புகழ் ஆசையோ, வேறெந்த ஆசையோ இன்றி, வேறு எந்த உள் நோக்கமும் இல்லாமல், வேலை செய்கிறவன் தான் மிகச் சிறப்பாக வேலை செய்யமுடியும். அவ்வாறு ஒரு மனிதனால் வேலை செய்ய முடியும்  பொழுது அவன் ஒரு புத்தன்  ஆகி விடுவான். –பக்கம் 182

 

ஜூன் 9 செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை

நாம் எல்லாம் பிச்சைக்காரர்கள். நாம் எதைச்செய்தாலும் பிரதிபலனை எதிர்பார்க்கிறோம். நாம் எல்லாம் வியாபாரிகள்; வாழ்க்கையை, நல்ல குணங்களை, சமயத்தை நாம் விலை பேசுகிறோம்.அந்தோ! அன்பைக் கூட நாம் வியாபாரம் பண்ணுகிறோமே! பக்கம் 181

 

ஜூன் 10 புதன்கிழமை

மனிதனுக்குள் புதைந்திருக்கும் பூரணத்தை வெளிப்படுத்துவதே கல்வி எனப்படும். மனிதனுக்குள் புதைந்திருக்கும் தெய்வீகத் தன்மையை வெளிப்படுத்துவதே சமயம் எனப்படும்—பக்கம் 173

ஜூன் 11 வியாழக்கிழமை

ஒரு தலைவனிடம் ஒழுக்கம் இல்லாவிட்டால் அவனிடம் மக்களுக்குப் பக்தி ஏற்பட முடியாது. அவனிடம் மாசு மறுவற்ற தூய்மை இருக்குமாயின் மக்களுக்கு அவனிடம் நிரந்தரமான பக்தியும் நம்பிக்கையும் நிச்சயமாக இருக்கும் – பக்கம் 168

 

 

ஜூன் 12 வெள்ளிக்கிழமை

மகாவீர ஹனுமானின் ஒழுக்கப் பண்பினை உங்களது லட்சியமாக நீங்கள் ஆக்கிக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். ராமச் சந்திரனின் ஆணையால் அவர் எவ்வாறு கடலைக் கடந்தார் என்று பாருங்கள், வாழ்வையோ, சாவையோ பற்றி அவர் ஒரு சிறிதும் அக்கறைப் படவில்லை. புலன்களனைத்தும் அவர் வசப்பட்டிருந்தன. ஆச்சரியமான விவேகி அவர். எப்படித் தொண்டாற்ற வேண்டும் என்பதற்கு பெரும் உதாரணமாக விளங்கிய அவரது வாழ்க்கையை ஒட்டி நீங்கள் உங்கள் வாழ்க்கையை அமைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும் –பக்கம் 176

 

ஜூன் 13 சனிக்கிழமை

உலகத்தின் பாரங்களை எல்லாம் சுமக்க நீங்கள் ஆயத்தம் என்றால் தாராளமாக அதனை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளுங்கள்..ஓர் எருதின் கொம்பில் ஒரு கொசு நீண்ட நேரம் உட்கார்ந்து இருந்தது. அதற்கு மனச் சாட்சி உறுத்தவே, மன்னிக்கவும் நான் உங்களைத் தொந்தரவு செய்து விட்டேன்; போய்விடுகிறேன் என்றது. எருதோ, தொந்தரவு எதுவுமில்லை. உங்கள் குடும்ப சகிதமாக வந்து உட்கார்ந்து விட்டுப் போங்கள். நீங்கள் என்னை என்ன செய்துவிட முடியும் என்றது. –பக்கம் 194

 

ஜூன் 14 ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமை

யாருக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிதல் தெரியுமோ, அவனுக்குத் த்லைமை தாங்கவும் தெரியும். முதலில் கீழ்ப்படியக் கற்றுக் கொள்ளுங்கள். மேலை நாட்டினரிடையே சுதந்திர உணர்ச்சி தீவிரமானதாக இருந்தாலும், கீழ்ப்படிகிற உணர்ச்சியும் அதே அளவுக்குத் தீவிரமாக உள்ளது – பக்கம் 166

ஒவ்வொரு பணியும் மூன்று நிலைகளைக் கடந்தே செல்ல வேண்டும். முதலில் அதனை இகழ்ச்சியாக நினைப்பார்கள்; இரண்டாவதாக எதிர்ப்பு வரும்; மூன்றாவதாக தனை ஒப்புக் கொள்வார்கள் – பக்கம் 164

ஜூன் 16 செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை

ஐரோப்பியர்களே! உங்களை நான் ஒன்று கேட்கலாமா? எந்த ஒரு நாட்டையாவது நீங்கள் மேல் நிலைக்கு உயர்த்தி இருக்கிறீர்களா? எங்காவது பல்வீனமான இனத்தினரைக் கண்டால் அவர்களைப் பூண்டோடு வேரறுத்திருக்கிறீர்கள். அவர்கள் நிலங்களில் நீங்கள் குடி ஏறி இருக்கிறீர்கள். உங்களுடைய அமெரிக்கா, ஆஸ்திரேலியா, நியுஜிலாந்து, பசிபிக் தீவுகள், தென் ஆப்பிரிக்கா ஆகிய நாடுகளின் வரலாறு என்ன? தாம் வாழ்வதற்காக மற்ற னைவரையும் அழிப்பது ஐரோப்பிய மக்களின் குறிக்கோள் ஆகும் – பக்கம் 136

பாரத தேசம் முழுவதும் எழுந்து நின்று ஹிந்து மஹா சமுத்திரத்துக்கு அடியிலுள்ள எலா மண்ணையும் வாரியெடுத்து மேற்கத்திய நாடுகளின் மீது வீசினாலும்கூட, நீங்கள் இன்று எங்கள் மீது சேறு வீசுகிற அளவில் தினையளவுகூடப் பதிலுக்குப் பதில் செய்ததாக ஆகாது. — பக்கம் 156

 

ஜூன் 18 வியாழக்கிழமை

ஆரியர்கள் வெளி நாட்டிலிருந்து படை எடுத்து வந்தார்கள் என்றும் பூர்வீக குடிகளிடமிருந்து அவர்களுடைய நிலங்களைப் பிடுங்கிக் கொண்டார்கள் என்றும், அவர்களை நிர்மூலமாக்கிவிட்டுப் பாரதத்தில் குடி ஏறினார்கள் என்றும் கூறுகிறார்கள். இதெல்லாம் கலப்படமற்ற பொய்; முட்டாள்தனமான பேச்சு ஆகும்; இந்த ராட்சதப் புளுகுகள் எல்லாம் நமது பிள்ளைகளுக்குக் கற்பிக்கப்படு வருகின்றன. இது உண்மையில் மிக மிக மோசமான செயல் ஆகும். – பக்கம் 134

 

ஜூன் 19 வெள்ளிக்கிழமை

நாம் அச்சமற்ற உயர்ந்த வீராங்கனைகளைத் தோற்றுவிப்போம். சங்க மித்திரை, மீரா, அஹல்யா, லீலா முதலியோர் விட்டுச் சென்ற உயர் பரபம்பரையைப் பின்பறக்கூடிய பெண்மணிகளை உண்டாக்குவோம். தியாகிகளை, திருத் தொண்டர்களை, வீரர்களைப் பெற்றெடுக்கும் தாய்மார்களாக அவர்களை நாம் உருவாக்குவோம் – பக்கம் 128

ஜூன் 20 சனிக்கிழமை

உபநிடதங்கள், பெரும் சக்திச் சுரங்கமாகும். உலகம் முழுவதற்கும் வீரமளிக்கப் போதுமான அளவு சக்தி இதற்கு உண்டு. இதைக் கொண்டு உலகமனைத்தையும் புத்துயிர் பெறச் செய்ய, பலம் பெறச் செய்ய, சக்தித் துடிப்பு பெறச் செய்ய முடியும் – பக்கம் 108

ஜூன் 21 ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமை

நான் ஆண்களுக்கு எதைக் கூறுவேனோ அதையே பெண்களுக்கும் கூறுவேன். பாரத நாட்டின் மீது நம்பிக்கை வையுங்கள். பாரத நாட்டின் கோட்பாடுகளின் மீது நம்பிக்கை வையுங்கள்; வலைமை பெற்றிருங்கள்:நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளுங்கள்; வெட்கப்படாதிருங்கள்; பிறரிடமிருந்து வாங்கிக் கொள்வதற்கு ஒரு சிறிது உண்டென்றாலும், பிறருக்குக் கொடுப்பதற்கு ஹிந்து மக்களிடம் உலகில் எந்த மக்களினத்தைக் காட்டிலும் அளவிட முடியாத விஷயங்கள் உள்ளன என்பதை நினைவிற் கொள்ளுங்கள் – பகம் 129

 

ஜூன் 22 திங்கட்கிழமை

அதர்வ வேத சம்ஹிதையிலிருந்து அற்புதமான ஒரு மந்திரம் என் நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது:-“நீங்கள் அனைவரும் ஒரே மனத்துடன் இருங்கள்; நீங்கள் அனைவரும் ஒரே சிந்தனையுடன் இருங்கள். ஏனெனில் பழங்காலத்தில் தெய்வங்கள் ஒரே மனத்துடன் இருந்ததால் ஆகுதிகளைப் பெற முடிந்தது. கடவுளர் ஒரே மனத்துடன் இருப்பதால்தான் மனிதர்களால் அவர்களை வழிபட முடிகிறது.” – என்று கூறுகிறது. ஒருமனப்பட்டு விளங்குவதே ஒரு இயக்கத்தின் வலிமையின் ரகசியம் – பக்கம் 99

 

ஜூன் 23 செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை

VARAHAMIHIRA

Varahamihira who authored two encyclopaedic works’ Brhat Jataka’ and ‘Brhat Samhita’ among others, says in the concluding chapter of Brhat Samhita,

Jyotih sasstrasamudram pramathya matimandaraadrinaatha mayaa

Lokasyaalokakarah saastrasasaangkah samuthksipthah

“Having churned the ocean of astrology with the Mandara mountain of my intelligence, I have taken out the moon of science that affords light to the world.

Then in the next verse he says,

“I have not discarded the works of ancient seers while writing this scientific work. Hence, O ye good men, you may by all means compare mine with theirs, and accept whichever you like

He continues,

“Good men, on finding some excellence, though slender, in an ocean of faults, proclaim it, while the mean minded do the contrary. This is the nature of the good and the wicked

Durjanahutaasataptam kaavyasuvarnam visuddhimaayaati

Sraavayitavyam tasmaaddusta janasya prayatnena

 

“The gold of poetry being heated by the fire of wicked men gets purified. Hence, it should be read to the wicked by all means”.

KALIDASA

Kalidasa, the greatest of the Indian poets, in his Raguvamsa Kavya, says,

“The dynasty originated from Sun; with the meagre intellect of mine,  I am wishing to go across this unnavigable ocean called the solar dynasty by a small boat.

“Will I become the butt of ridicule if I were to covet the celebrity of an eminent poet, like a short fellow overstretching his arms for a fruit obtainable only by the tall, because I am still a dunce in this subject matter?

“But my course in depicting this dynasty might as well be easy through the gateway already crafted by the earlier poets, like a diamond bore holed by a diamond-edged tool for an easy passage of thread”.

In Malavikagnimitra, he says,

“Every old poem is not good simply because it is old; nor is a poem without charm, because it is new; sound critics favour the one or the other, after proper examination; while a blockhead is guided by another’s judgement”.

KAMBAN

Greatest of the middle age Tamil poets Kamban in his Tamil Ramayana says in Balakanda,

“I wanted to write the story of Rama. My desire is like a cat licking the milky ocean (thinking it could drink the full ocean).

“Are you people wondering at my endeavour of writing the great story done by Valmiki– full of penance? He wrote the story of great Rama who pierced the seven strong trees with a single arrow which never miss the target like the curse of great people.

“I know the world will ridicule me; but my intention is to highlight the greatness of Valmiki who wrote flawless divine poetry”.

PURANDARADASA

The famous Kannada saint and composer Purandaradasa says in one of his songs

“There ought to be traducers. Without them the glory of the virtuous would not gain celebrity. For example the paddy grain would be worthless without its slender thorn”.

Varahamihira  concludes by saying

“With my intellectual power blessed by the Divine Sun, the sages and my preceptor, as a result of my having made obeisance to their feet, I have only summarized this science. Hence I offer salutations to the ancient authors”.

Silence is NOT Golden!

Silence is golden is a proverbial saying in English. The origin of this phrase is in Sanskrit literature. But we see contradictory statements in the literature as well. ‘Silence amounts to consent’ is another saying in Sanskrit. There are a few interesting anecdotes in our literature about silence.

No answer itself is the answer – says ‘Ratnasamuccaya’

The wise should observe silence –  says ‘Subhasitaratna bhandakara’

All is achieved through silence – is found in ‘Pancatantra’

Silence is the ornament for the ignorant – says ‘Niticataka’-6

If telling the truth causes anguish, better be silent – is the saying in ‘Vishnu Purana’ 3-12-3

Compensation case against an innocent Brahmin!

Freedom Fighter Subrahmanya sivam narrates a story in Tamil in his book ‘Moksha Sadhana rahasyam’ and a rough translation goes like this:

A thief made a hole in the wall of a wealthy Brahmin’s house to steal away his money. Unfortunately the wall was very wet and fell on him. He died on the spot. His relatives sued the Brahmin for compensation. He took the case to the king saying that it was unfair to ask money from him for a dead thief.

But the king wanted to find out the cause. He asked him, “why did you leave the wall so wet that it fell at the touch of a person?”

O King! I don’t know the reason. Better ask the builder. It is a new wall built just a day ago.

The builder was summoned immediately.

Why did you do a shabby work? You have to pay the compensation to the family of the thief, said the king.

The builder said, O King! I don’t know the reason. Probably the worker mixed the cement with much water.

Immediately the building worker was summoned.

Why did you pour more water? The thief died because of you. You have to pay the compensation  – said the king

Building worker said, O King! I don’t know the reason. The pot was unusually big. Better ask the potter about it.

Immediately the potter was summoned.

Why did you give him a bigger pot on that day? Look at what you have done. Pay the compensation to the family

He said, O King! It is true I made the pot bigger on a particular day. But that was because of a beautiful prostitute walked past me in broad day light. And I was looking at her beauty. It was unusual for her to walk in our street at that time of the day. So she has to pay the compensation.

Immediately the prostitute was summoned to the court.

She said, O King! It was not my fault. I never walk in the streets during day time. On that day the washer man did not deliver the clothes. I always present myself to the clients with clean clothes. So I had to go to washer man’s house to collect my clothes. You have to ask the washer man for the delay.

Immediately the washer man was summoned.

Washer man said, O King! It was not my fault. As usual I went to the banks of the river in the early in the morning. An ascetic was washing his clothes in my place. So I did not want to disturb him. I could not finish my work at the usual time. Please ask the saint why he came to my place on the day.

Immediately the ascetic was summoned.

He was observing silence on that day. He did not bother to answer the questions of the king.

Then the ministers quoted the saying, Silence means Yes. So they unanimously decided that the ascetic was the culprit. The ascetic was detained!!

Silence trapped one more saint in another case in the Mahabharata. When thieves were hiding in Sage Ani Mandavya’s house, he was observing silence. When royal servants found the thieves in his house with the stolen property, he was also dragged to the court and he was sentenced to death. He was impaled with other thieves, but he survived the impalement due to his penance and was released later.

Is silence golden? You decide!
