In Jatras depicting the life of Krishna , the play commences with the beating of the drums and the loud singing of O Krishna, Come, Come! Oh Dear!. But the man who plays the part of Krishna pays no heed to the noise and goes on complacently, chatting and smoking in the green room behind the stage. But as soon as the noise ceases, and the pious sage Narada, overflowing with love enters the stage with sweet and soft music and summons Krishna to appear, Krishna finds that he can no longer remain indifferent. Hurriedly he then enters the stage. As long as the spiritual aspirant calls on the Lord with mere lip prayers Come O Lord, the Lord does not appear. when the Lord comes the heart of the devotee melts into divine emotion, and all loud utterances cease for ever. The Lod cannot tarry when his devotee calls on Him from the depth of his heart overflowing with profound love.

The breeze that comes from the ocean of Brahman affects every heart on which it flows. The ancient sages Sanaka , Sanantana and others were softened by this breeze. The God intoxicated Narada however obviously got the glimpse of the Divine ocean from a distance; and so forgetting his own self, he had been wandering over the world like a mad man , always singing the praise of Lord Hari. Sukadeva, a born ascetic, only touched the water of that ocean thrice with his hand, and ever since he had been rolling about like a child through the fulness of its ecstasy. And the great teacher of the universe Mahadeva, drank three handfuls of water thereof and has since been lying motionless like a corpse, intoxicated with Divine bliss. Who can fathom the depth, or the mysterious power, of this ocean?

For this Kali Yuga, Naradiya Bhakti or communion with God by love, devotion, self surrender as practised and preached by the Rishi Narada in enjoined. There is now hardly any time for Karma Yoga i.e. for doing various ritualistic duties laid on man by the scriptures. Don’t you see that the well known decoction of the medicinal roots known as Dashamula -pachana is not the remedy for fevers of the present day? The patient runs the risk of being carried off before the medicine has had time to take effect. Fever mixture is therefore the order of the day.

So, I say, in the beginning there is much fuss of Karma. But the more you proceed towards God, the less will it grow. Finally comes the complete renunciation of work and the attainment of Samadhi. Generally, the body does not remain long after the attainment of Samadhi. But in the case of some it remains for the work of teaching the world. Sages like Narada and Divine Incarnations like Sri Chaitanya are examples of this.

After a well is dug some throw away all the spades and baskets, but others preserve them with the idea that they may be of some use to any of their neighbours. Such great souls are moved with pity at the sight of the sufferings of the world. They are not so selfish as to care only for the attainment of Jnana for themselves.

ஜெர்மானிய அறிஞர்கள் சம்ஸ்க்ருத மொழிக்கு மட்டும் சேவை செய்யவில்லை; தமிழ், மலையாளம் போன்ற மொழிகளின் வளர்ச்சிக்கும் உதவினர்.  ஹெர்மன் குண்டர்ட் என்பவர் வங்காளி, ஹிந்துஸ்தானி, மலையாள, தமிழ் மொழிகளைக் கற்றார். அவர் கிறிஸ்தவ மதத்தைப் பரப்புவதற்காக இந்தியாவுக்கு வந்தார். கேரளத்திலுள்ள தலைச் சேரியில் தங்கி கிறிஸ்தவ மதத்தைப் பரப்பினார். அதற்காக மலையாளத்தைக் கற்று பைபிளின் புதிய ஏற்பாட்டு NEW TESTAMENT  பகுதியை மலையாள மொழியில் ஆக்கினார்; அத்தோடு மலையாளம்- ஆங்கில அகராதியையும் தயாரித்தார்.

ஹெர்மன் குண்டெர்ட் 1814- ஆம் ஆண்டில் ஜெர்மனியில் உள்ள ஸ்டுட்கார்ட் நகரில் பிறந்தார்; துர்பிங்கன் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் சமயம் பற்றி கற்றார். கிறிஸ்தவ மதத்தைப் பரப்புவதற்காக இந்தியாவுக்குச் செல்ல முடிவு செய்து லண்டனில் ஹிந்துஸ்தானி, வங்காளி மொழிகளைக் கற்ருவியது கேரளத்திலுள்ள தலைச்சேரி நகரில் பேசல் BASEL MISSION  மிஷனில் பணியாற்றினார் .

1836–ஆம் ஆண்டில் முதலில் திருநெல்வேலிக்கு வந்தார் ; அங்கு மதப் பிரசார வேலையில் இருந்த

போது தமிழ் மொழியைக்கற்று பைபிள் /புதிய ஏற்பாடு தொடர்பான சொற்களை வைத்து கிரேக்க- தமிழ் அகராதியை அச்சிட்டார்.

மங்களுருக்குச் சென்று கன்னட மொழியையும் கற்றார் ; அதற்குப் பின்னர் தலைச்சேரிக்கு வந்தார். அவரும் அவருடைய மனைவியும் மலையாள மக்களைப் போல வாழ வேண்டும் என்று எண்ணி ஒரு குடிசையில் வாழ்ந்தனர். அரிசிச் சோற்றினையும் தினை வகைத் தானியங்களையும் உண்டனர். பின்னர் உடல் நலம் குன்றியவுடன் அந்த உணவுவகைகளைக் கைவிட்டு வழக்கம் போல மாமிச உணவுகளுக்குத் திரும்பினார்கள் கன்னட, மலபார்/ மலையாள ஊர்களில் இரண்டு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு அரசாங்கப்  பள்ளி இன்ஸ்பெக்டராகவும் பணிபுரிந்தார். உடல்நலம் குன்றவே 1859 ஆம் ஆண்டில் ஜெர்மனிக்குத் திரும்பினார்.

ஜெர்மனிக்குத் திரும்பியவுடன் கிறிஸ்தவத்தைப் பரப்பும் மிஷன் மேகஸின் என்ற பத்திரிகைக்கு ஆசிரியர் ஆனார். அதிலும் அவர் கட்டுரைகளை எழுதினார் . . அப்போதுதான் அவரது சிறந்த படைப்பான மலையாள -ஆங்கில அகராதி (1872) அச்சானது; கோட்டயத்தில் நூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின்னர் 1973 ஆம் ஆண்டில் அதன் புதிய பதிப்பினை வெளியிட்டார்கள்.

அவர் நீண்ட காலம் நோய்வாய்ப்பட்டு, 1893 -ஆம் ஆண்டில் இறந்தார்.

அவர் இறந்தாலும் அவருடைய பிள்ளைகளும் பேரப் பிள்ளைகளும் இந்தியத் தொடர்பினை விடாமல் வைத்துக்கொண்டனர். பேரர்களில் ஒருவரான ஹெர்மன் ஹெஸ்ஸே HERMANN HESSE என்பவர் புகழ்பெற்ற ஜெர்மானியக் கவிஞர் ஆவார்.

நவம்பர் 27 பிரபல மின்னல் வேக மன்னன் ப்ருஸ் லீயின் பிறந்த தினம்!

பயிற்சி செய் அல்லது செத்து மடி : ப்ரூஸ் லீயின் அறிவுரை!

மின்னல் வேக மன்னன் என்று உலகெங்கும் பிரசித்தி பெற்ற ப்ரூஸ் லீ (பிறப்பு 27-11-1940 மரணம்: 20-7-1973) தனது விசேஷ தற்காப்புக் கலை உத்திகளால் உலகைக் கவர்ந்தவர். அனைத்து ஆய்வுகளும் வியப்பது அவரது ‘ஒன் இன்ச் பஞ்ச்’ என்பது பற்றித் தான். ஒரு அங்குல தூரத்தில் இருந்து அவர் எதிராளியின் மீது விடும் ஒரு குத்து இடியெனப் பாய்ந்து எதிரிலிருப்பவரை வீழ்த்தும்.

தன் வாழ்நாளில் ப்ரூஸ் லீ யாரிடமும் தோற்றதில்லை.

அவரது வாழ்க்கையில் சுவையான நிகழ்ச்சிகள் ஏராளம் உள்ளன.

அவற்றில் முக்கியமான ஒன்று இது.

ப்ரூஸ் லீக்கு நெருக்கமான நண்பர் ஒருவரிடம் ப்ரூஸ் லீ அவரை வேகமாக ஓடுமாறு வற்புறுத்தினார்.

நடந்தது என்ன என்பதை அந்த நண்பரே தெரிவிக்கிறார் இப்படி:

“தினமும் வேகமாக மூன்று மைல் ஓடுமாறு என்னை ப்ரூஸ் கூறினார்.

இருபத்தியோரு அல்லது இருபத்தியிரண்டு நிமிடங்களில் நாங்கள் மூன்று மைல்களை ஓடிக் கடந்தோம்.

அதாவது ஒரு மைலை ஓடிக் கடக்க சுமார் எட்டு நிமிடங்களே ஆனது. ஆனால் ப்ரூஸ் லீ ஒரு மைல் ஓட எடுத்துக் கொண்ட நேரம் ஆறரை நிமிடங்களே!

ஒரு நாள் காலை அவர் என்னிடம் கூறினார் : ஐந்து நிமிடங்களில் ஓடி ஒரு மைலைக் கடக்கப் போகிறோம்.

உடனே நான் கூறினேன்: ப்ரூஸ். என்னால் ஐந்து நிமிடங்களில் முடியாது. நான் உன்னை விட வயதானவன். என்னால் முடியவே முடியாது.”

உடனே ப்ரூஸ் கூறினார்:  மூன்று நிமிடங்கள் ஆனவுடன் நடையை மாற்றுவோம். மீதி இரண்டே நிமிடங்களில் நீ அதை முடித்து விடலாம்.”

உடனே நான் கூறினேன்: “ஓகே. நான் அதை செய்து பார்க்கிறேன்,

மூன்று நிமிடங்கள் ஆனவுடன் நான்காம் மைலில் முயற்சி செய்த போது என்னால் முடியவில்லை.

“ப்ரூஸ்! இன்னும் நான் ஓடினால் எனக்கு மாரடைப்பு தான் வரும். செத்து விடுவேன்.”

உடனே ப்ரூஸ் கூறினார்: செத்துப் போ!”

இதைக் கேட்டு கோபமடைந்த  ப்ரூஸின் நண்பர் ஐந்து மைலையும் ஒருவாறாக ஓடிக் கடந்தார்.

பின்னால் குளித்து விட்டு ப்ரூஸ் லீயிடம் இது பற்றிப் பேசினார் அவர்.

“ப்ரூஸ்! நீ ஏன் அப்படிச் சொன்னாய்?”

ப்ரூஸ் லீயிடமிருந்து உடனே பதில் வந்தது :”ஏனென்றால் நீ சாவதே நல்லது. நிஜமாகச் சொல்லப் போனால் நீ உனக்கே ஒரு குறுகிய எல்லையை வைத்துக் கொண்டால் அது உடல் பயிற்சியாகட்டும், வேறு எதுவாகத்தான் இருக்கட்டும், அது உன் வாழ்க்கை முழுவதும் பரவி விடும். அது உன் வேலையில் பரவும், உனது ஒழுக்கப் பண்பில் அது ஊடுருவும். எல்லாவற்றிலும் முழுதுமாக அது பரவி விடும். எதற்கும் எல்லை என்று ஒன்று கிடையவே கிடையாது. மேடுகள் வந்து உன்னைப் பாதிக்கலாம். ஆனால் அங்கேயே நீ நின்று விடக் கூடாது. அதைக் கடந்து நீ செல்ல வேண்டும். அது உன்னைச் சாகடிக்கிறது என்றால் அது நிச்சயமாகச் சாகடிக்கும்.

ஒரு மனிதன் எப்போதுமே தனது எல்லையைக் கடந்து கொண்டே இருக்க வேண்டும்.

ஒன்று எல்லையைக் கடந்து முன்னேறு அல்லது செத்து மடி!”

இதைச் சொல்லி விட்டு ப்ரூஸ் லீ நண்பரை ஆழ்ந்து பார்த்தார்!

அவருக்கு ப்ரூஸ் லீ கூறியது இப்போது புரிந்தது!

நீ வளர்ந்து கொண்டே இருக்க வேண்டும். வளரவில்லை என்றால் நீ செத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறாய் என்று அர்த்தம். 

இது தான் ப்ரூஸ் லீ போதித்த தத்துவம்.

ப்ரூஸ் லீ பற்றி அதிகாரபூர்வமாக எழுதியவர் ஜான் லிட்டில் என்பவர்.

ப்ரூஸ் லீயின் தனிப்பட்ட குறிப்பேடுகளையும், இதர தகவல்களையும் பார்க்க அனுமதிக்கப்பட்ட ஒரே ஒருவர் இவரே.

இவர் எழுதியுள்ள பல சம்பவங்கள் ப்ரூஸ் லீ எப்படிப்பட்டவர் என்பதைக் காட்டும். அவர் குறிப்பிடும் இந்தச் சம்பவம் உலகளாவிய விதத்தில் பிரபலமாகி விட்டது!

 “பத்தாயிரம்  உதைகளைப் பயிற்சி செய்த ஒருவரைக் கண்டு ஒருபோதும் நான் பயந்ததில்லை; ஆனால் ஒரே உதையை பத்தாயிரம் முறை பயிற்சி செய்பவரைப் பார்த்துத் தான் நான் பயப்படுகிறேன்” என்றார் ப்ரூஸ் லீ.

ஒரு குத்து அல்லது ஒரு உதை, அதை எடுத்துக் கொள்; அதைப் பயிற்சி செய்; அதில் கவனம் செலுத்து; அது உன் திறமையை அதிகரிக்கும். உனது திறனைக் கூட்டுவிக்கும் என்றார் அவர்.

பயிற்சி, பயிற்சி, பயிற்சி – முன்னேற்றம், முன்னேற்றம், முன்னேற்றம் – இதுவே ப்ரூஸ் லீயின் வாழ்க்கைத் தத்துவமாக அமைந்தது. தற்காப்புக் கலைக்கு மட்டுமல்ல; வாழ்க்கையில் எந்தத் துறையை எடுத்துக் கொண்டாலும் உதவும் அறிவுரை இது.

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa has spoken about Inter Galactic Space Traveller Narada Muni and young age Gnani Sukar in his teachings. By quoting the great people, he has taught us many spiritual truths. Here are some interesting titbits:

Hanuman was blessed with the vision of God both with form and without it( Sakara and Nirakara). But he retained the ego of a servant of god . Such was the case with Narada, Sanaka, Sanandana, and Sanatkumara.

A devotee: Were Narada and others were only Bhaktas or were they Gnanis also?

The Master: Narada and others have attained the highest knowledge (Brahmagnana). But still went on like the murmuring water of the rivulet, talking and singing the praise of God. This shows that they too kept the ego of knowledge, a slight trace of individuality, to mark their separate existence from the Deity, for the purpose of teaching others the saving truths of religion.

When the jar is full, it does not make a noise anymore. So the man of realisation too does not talk much. But what then about Narada and others? Yes. Narada, Suka Deva and a few others like them came down several steps after the attainment of Samadhi, and out of mercy and love they taught mankind.

Homa Bird

There is a fabled species of birds called HOMA. They live so high up in the heavens and love those high regions so dearly that they never come down to earth. And it is said that they lay eggs in the sky and their young ones are hatched in mid-air as the eggs fall, pulled down by gravity. No sooner these fledgelings find out that they are falling downwards, than they immediately change their course and indistinctively fly upwards towards their home. Men like Narada, Sukadeva, Jesus and Sankaracharya are like these birds.  Even in their boyhood they became free from all attachments to the things of the world and betook themselves to the highest regions of True Knowledge and Divine Light.

How to pray is the question. Let us pray for the things of the world, but pray like saint Narada.

Narada said to Ramachandra “ O Rama, grant that I may be favoured with Bhakti (love, devotion and self surrender) for Thy Lotus Feet.

Be it so, Narada, said Rama, but will you not ask for anything else?

Narada replied, Lord may it please Thee to grant that I may not be attached by Thy Maya which fascinates the universe.

Ramachandra said one more

Be it so, Narada, said Rama, but will you not ask for anything else?

Narada replied, No Lord, that is all I pray for.

Sukadeva was an Urdhvaretas ( a man of complete and unbroken continence); he had never any emission of semen. There was another kind called Dhairyaretas; who had discharge of retas at one time but subsequently practised absolute continence. If a man remains a Dhairyaretas continually for twelve years, he acquires a superhuman power. A new nerve is developed in him. It is called the nerve of intelligence (Medhanadi), and he can remember everything and know everything.

தமிழர்கள்  கூட  அதிகம்  கேள்விப் பட்டிராத  செங்கோட்டை ஆவடையக்காள் பற்றி ரிஷிகேஷ் சுவாமி சிவானந்தா ஞானியர் வரலாறு என்ற நூலில் அதிசயமான தகவல்களை நமக்கு அளிக்கிறார்

ஆவடையக்காள் யார் ?

பிராமண வடமா இனப்பெற்றோர்களுக்கு செங்கோட்டையில் பிறந்தார் சொன்னதைச் செய்வாள் ; கொடுத்ததை உண்பாள் ; சிறு வயதிலேயே ஒரு ஞானி போல நடந்து கொண்டாள் . அக்கால வழக்கப்படி பெற்றோர்கள், ஒரு பிராமண இளைஞனுக்கு அவளை சிறுவயதிலேயே  திருமணம் செய்து கொடுத்தனர்

சாந்தி முகூர்த்த நாள் வந்தது ; தோழிகள் அனைவரும் ஆடிப்பாடி அவளை மணவறையைத் திறந்து உள்ளே நிறுத்திவிட்டுக் கதவை மூடினார்கள் ; ஆர்வத்தோடு காத்திருந்த மாப்பிளையை மாலைக் கூடையில் இருந்த ஒரு அரவம் தீண்டியது அவன் அங்கேயே இறந்தான் . மறுநாள் காலையில் தோழிகள் அனைவரும் கதவைத் திறந்தபோது அவள் அதே இடத்தில் அசையாமல் நின்றாள் ; இறந்து கிடந்த மணமகனைப் பார்த்து எல்லோரும் அலறினர் . அவளை வெளியே அழைத்து வந்து விதவைக்கான சடங்குகளை செய்தனர்.

முதல் அற்புதம்

அக்காலத்தில் விதவைகள், பொது மக்களின் கண்களில் படுவதைத் தவிர்ப்பதற்காக அதிகாலை இருட்டிலேயே நதிக்குச் சென்று நீராடிவிட்டு வருவது வழக்கம். ஆவடையக்காளும் அவ்வாறே சென்று கீழே கிடந்த மாவிலையால் பல் துலக்கி விட்டு குளித்தாள்; அவள் உடலில் ஆன்மீக எழுச்சி ஏற்பட்டது. ஏனெனில் அவள் உபயோகித்த , மாவிலை சதாசிவ பிரம்மேந்திராளின் குருவான ஐயாவாள் என்னும் யோகி பயன்படுத்திய எச்சில் இலை; அதிலுள்ள எச்சில் ஆவடையக்காளின் நாக்கில் பட்டவுடன் புத்துணர்வு பெற்றாள்; அங்கு மரத்தடியில் ஜபம் செய்துகொண்டிருந்த ஐயாவாள் காலில் விழுந்தாள்.

அவரும் அவளை ஆசீர்வதித்து பிரம்ம சத்யம் ஜகன் மித்ய என்ற உபதேசத்தை அளித்தார். இறைவனே உண்மைப்பொருள்; நாம் காணும் உலகே மாயம் என்பது அதன் பொருள். அதைக் கேட்டவுடன் அவளின் அஞ்ஞான இருள் திரை விலகியது; பேரானந்த ஒளி அவளைச் சூழ்ந்தது. அவர் ஒரு லிங்கத்தையும் பூஜைக்காகக் கொடுத்தார்

திருவனந்தபுரத்துக்கு ஆவடையக்காள் யாத்திரை சென்றாள். அங்கே நதிக்கரையில் அமர்ந்து சிவலிங்கத்துக்கு வில்வ இலைகளால் அர்ச்சித்தாள்  இவளது புகழ் பரவவே அரசன் ஒரு கூடையில் தங்க இலைகளை அனுப்பினான் . அவளும் பூஜை செய்துவிட்டு வழக்கம்போல ஆற்றில் எறிந்துவிட்டாள்.

பகவத் கீதையில் சமலோஷ்ட காஞ்சன என்று பகவான் கிருஷணர் சொன்னதை சேக்கிழார் போன்ற ஞானிகள் ஓடும் பொன்னும் ஒக்கவே நோக்குவர்  — அதாவது அவர்களுக்கு ஓட்டாஞ்சல்லியும் தங்கத் தகடும் ஒன்றே — என்று தமிழாக்கினார்கள் .

வேறு ஒரு வட்டார அரசனுக்கு இவளுடைய பெருமை விளங்கியது. தன்னை மணம் செய்துகொள்ளலாம் என்று ஆசை காட்டினார்; அவளும் நேசிப்பது போல நடித்து ஆன்மீக அறிவு ஊட்டவே அரசனும் அவளது சீடன் ஆனார்.

பின்னர் திரும்பி வந்து அய்யாவாளின் காலடியில் அமர்ந்தார்; இவளுக்கு அவர் முக்கிய இடம் கொடுத்தது பழைய சீடர்களுக்குப் பொறாமையை உண்டாக்கியது

அவர் இருந்த ஆஸ்ரமம் காவிரிக்கரையில் இருந்தது; சீடர்கள் அனைவரும் நதியின் நடுவிலுள்ள ஒரு திட்டில் ஜபம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தனர். திடீரென நதியின் நீர்மட்டம் உயரத் துவங்கியவுடன் அனைவரும் ஓடிக் கரைக்கு வந்துவிட்டனர்; ஆவடையாக்களை வேண்டுமென்றே விட்டுவிட்டு வந்தனர்; அவளது உடலில் தண்ணீர் பட்டவுடன் அவளும் புறப்பட்டடாள் ;  ஐயாவாள் கையை உயர்த்தி அங்கேயே நில் என்று சைகை காட்டினார். அவளும் அப்படியே நின்றாள்; மூன்று நாட்களுக்குப் பின்னர் வெள்ளம் வடிந்தது;  அவள் ஒரு பாதிப்பும் இல்லாமல் வழக்கம்போலத் திரும்பிவந்தாள் . அவளுடைய பெருமையை சீடர்களும் அறிந்து குருவைப் போலவே மதிப்பு கொடுத்தார்கள்

ஆவடையக்காளின் பெருமையை ஐயாவாள் சொன்னவுடன் அவளைக் காண பக்தர்கள் திரண்டுவந்தனர். அவர் பாடிக்கொண்டே வாழ்ந்தார்; உபநிஷத்துக்களின்  கருத்துக்கள் அவரது பாடல்களில் இழையோடிக் சென்றன.  அவரைக் கேலி செய்தவர்களும் வாயடைத்துப் போயினர்..

( ஆவடையக்காளது சமாதி அல்லது மரணம் பற்றிய தகவலெதையும் சுவாமி சிவானந்தா அளிக்கவில்லை

ஐயாவாள் சுமார் 300 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் காவிரி நதிக்கரையில் இருக்கும் திருவிசை நல்லுரில் பிறந்தவர் ; அவரது காலத்தைக் கொண்டு ஆவடையாக்கள் காலத்தை நாம் அறியலாம் செங்கோட்டைக்கு அவர் சென்றாரா அல்லது காவிரி தீரத்துக்கு ஆவடையக்காள் வந்து அவரை முதலில் சந்த்தித்தாரா என்பதும் நூலில் இல்லை.)

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa is teaching us lot of spiritual truths and practices through the life of Adi Sankara. I have found many interesting  anecdotes or quotes in the book “Teachings of Sri Ramakrishna”. Reading them together will help any spiritual aspirant.

Here are the anecdotes:

Sri Sankaracharya had a disciple who had been serving him for a long time but was not still given any instruction by him. Once, while seated alone, Sankara heard the footsteps of someone coming behind. So, he called out, Who is there? The disciple answered, It is I. The Acharya thereupon said, If this “I”  is so dear to you, then expand it to Infinity (i.e. know the universe as yourself) or renounce it altogether.

After the attainment of Samadhi, some still retain the ego—the “I” of the servant or worshipper of God. Sankaracharya kept the ego of Vidhya (knowledge) for the purpose of teaching others.

Sankaracharya’s exposition of the Vedanta is indeed true and true also is what Ramanuja speaks of it – the Visishtadvaita philosophy.

There is a fabled species of birds called HOMA. They live so high up in the heavens and love those high regions so dearly that they never come down to earth. And it is said that they lay eggs in the sky and their young ones are hatched in mid-air as the eggs fall, pulled down by gravity. No sooner these fledgelings find out that they are falling downwards, than they immediately change their course and indistinctively fly upwards towards their home. Men like Narada, Sukadeva, Jesus and Sankaracharya are like these birds.  Even in their boyhood they became free from all attachments to the things of the world and betook themselves to the highest regions of True Knowledge and Divine Light.

The great Sankaracharya had a foolish disciple who used to imitate his master in all matters.  Sankara uttered Sivoham (I am Siva); the disciple also repeated Sivoham. To correct his disciple’s folly, Sankara one day while passing by a smithy, took a pot full of molten iron and asked the disciple also to do the same. Of course, the disciple could not imitate this act of his master, and thenceforward he left off saying Sivoham. Base imitation is always bad, but to attempt to correct one’s own self by the noble examples of the great ones is always good.

An outcaste was carrying baskets of meat from the slaughter house. On the way he met Sankaracharya who was returning after his bath in the sacred Ganges. It chanced that the outcaste touched the person of the holy man . Sankara was offended and cried out “ You have touched me sirrah!”. The outcaste replied, Sir neither have I touched you, nor have you touched me. Please reason with me and say whether your true Self is the body or the mind or the intellect; tell me  what you truly are. You know that the true Self is not attached to any of the three Gunas of Nature, Satva, Rajas, Tamas. Then Sankara was abashed and had the true awakening.
