ஹெர்மன் மெல்வில். HERMAN MELVILLE
(1819 – 1891)
அமெரிக்க இலக்கியத்தின் தூண்களில் ஒருவர் ஹெர்மன் மெல்வில். இவருடைய புதினமான (MOBY DICK) மோபி டிக் உலகின் மிகச்சிறந்த நாவல்களில் ஒன்றாகும்.
நியூயார்க் (NEW YORK) நகரில் மெல்வில் பிறந்தார். அவருடைய தந்தை பெரிய வியாபாரி. ஆனால் மெல்விலுக்கு 15 வயதானபோது தந்தையின் வியாபாரம் படுத்தது. அவர் நொடித்துப் போனார். இதனால் மெல்வில் பள்ளிப் படிப்பைப் பாதியில் நிறுத்தி வயிற்றுப் பிழைப்புக்காக வேலைக்குப் போக நேர்ந்தது.
எழுத்தாளராகவும் பண்ணைப் பணியாளராகவும் ஆசிரியராகவும் பல தொழில்களுக்கு மாறிய அவர் இறுதியில் திரைகடல் ஓடித் திரவியம் தேடப் புறப்பட்டார்.
1839-இல் அமெரிக்காவிலிருந்து லிவர்பூல் நகரத்திற்கு (பிரிட்டன்) வந்தார். இந்த கடற்பயண அனுபவமே அவரது நாவல் RED BURN-க்கு கருப்பொருளாக அமைந்தது.
இரண்டாவது முறையாக அவர் கடற்பயணம் சென்றது ஒரு திமிங்கில வேட்டைக் கப்பலில். இதை அடிப்படையாக வைத்து எழுதப் பட்டதுதான் MOBY DICK
இதற்கடுத்த கடற்பயணத்தின்போது ஒரு தீவில் மனிதர்களை உண்ணும் காட்டு மனிதர்களிடத்தில் (CANNIBALS) இவர் மாட்டிக்கொண்டு விட்டார். அந்த தீவின் பெயர் MARQUESAS ISLANDS. காட்டு மனிதர்களுடன் தான் வாழ்ந்ததையே கதையாக எழுதினார். இதுதான் இவருடைய முதல் வெளியீடு (அச்சான முதல் நூல்)
அந்தத் தீவுகளிலிருந்து இவரை ஒரு ஆஸ்திரேலிய கப்பல் மீட்டது. ஆனால் கப்பலுக்குள் கலகம் வெடிக்கவே இவரையும் கலகக்காரர்களையும் பசிபிக் கடல் நாடான TAHITI-யில் இறக்கிவிட்டு கப்பல் சென்றுவிட்டது. பின்னர் ஒரு அமெரிக்கக் கப்பலைப் பிடித்து ஹானலூலு (HONOLULU) தீவு வழியாக அமெரிக்கவுக்குச் சென்றார்.
நியூயார்க்கில் வாழத்துவங்கிய அவர் 1847இல் திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டார். 1850இல் மாஸசூசட்ஸில் பிட்ஸ்பர்க் என்னும் இடத்தில் நிலம் வாங்கினார். அவருக்கு அருகிலேயே நத்தேனியல் ஹாதோர்ன் (NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE) என்ற புகழ்பெற்ற அமெரிக்க நாவலாசிரியர் வாழ்ந்தார். MOBY DICK நாவலை எழுதமாறு இவரைத் தூண்டியது நத்தேனியல்தான்.
ஒரு திமிங்கில வேட்டைக் கப்பலில் வேட்டைக்காரர்கள் எப்படி வாழ்கிறார்கள் என்பதை MOBY DICK நாவல் விளக்குகிறது. மோபி டிக் என்னும் வெள்ளைத் திமிங்கிலத்தை (White Whale) அவர்கள் தேடுவதாக கதை அமைந்துள்ளது. இது திமிங்கில வேட்டைக் கதைபோலத் தோன்றினாலும் உண்மையில் இங்கு உருவகப்படுத்திய விஷயம் மனிதனின் வாழ்க்கைதான். தீயசக்திகள் எப்படி மனிதர்களைக் கவர்ந்து இழுக்கிறது – அவை எவ்வளவு கொடியவை என்பதை ஆசிரியர் சித்தரிக்கிறார். முதலில் இந்தப் புத்தகத்தைப் பலரும் புரிந்து கொள்ளவில்லை. அரைகுறையான பாராட்டுகளே கிடைத்தன.
மெல்வில் தனது கடைசி 35 ஆண்டுகால வாழ்வில் எழுதியது மிகமிகக் குறைவே.

அதிசயக் கனவுகள்
அன்பார்ந்த தமிழ் நெஞ்சங்களே சந்தானம் நாகராஜன் வணக்கம். நாம் எல்லோருமே கனவு காண்கிறோம். சிலர் நான் கனவே காண்பதில்லை என்கின்றனர். ஆனால் என்ன கனவு கண்டோம் என்பதை ஞாபகப்படுத்திக் கொள்ள முடியாதவர்கள் தான் அவர்கள்! காலையில் எழுந்தவுடன் ஒன்றுமே ஞாபகத்தில் இல்லையென்றால் கனவு கண்டதாகச் சொல்ல முடியாதல்லவா?!
ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்கள் ஒருவர் எப்போது கனவு காண்கிறார் என்பதை ஆராய்ச்சி மூலம் கண்டுபிடித்து விட்டனர். இமைகளுக்கு அடியே கண்கள் அங்கும் இங்குமாக எவ்வளவு முறை இயங்குகின்றன என்பதை கண் இமைப்பின் மூலமாகத் துல்லியமாக அறிந்து, இப்படிப்பட்ட நேரங்களில் ஒருவர் கனவு காண்கிறார் என்பதை ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்கள் துல்லியமாகக் கூறி விட முடியும். இதற்குத் ‘துரித கண் இயக்கம்’ – Rapid Eye Movement – என அறிவியல் பெயர் சூட்டி இருக்கிறது. தூங்குபவர் ஒருவரை உற்றுக் கவனிப்பதன் மூலமாக நாமே கூட இதை அறியலாம்!
காலம் காலமாகக் கனவுகளின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை புராணங்களும் இதிஹாஸங்களும் விளக்கி உள்ளன. சிலருடைய கனவுகள் கடவுளிடமிருந்து வரும் செய்திகளாகக் கருதப்பட்டன. ஸ்வப்ன சாஸ்திரம் என்பது நம்மிடையே நுணுக்கமாக உள்ளது. சந்தியாவந்தன மந்திரத்தில் தினமும் கடைசியில் ரக்ஷை மந்திரமாக, அத்யா நோ தேவ ஸவித: ப்ரஜாவத் ஸாவீ: ஸௌபகம்! பரா துஷ்வப்னியஹும் ஸுவ| என்று உச்சரித்து ஸவித்ரு தேவனே, இப்போது எங்களுக்கு ஸந்ததிகளுடன் கூடிய சௌபாக்கியத்தை அருள வேண்டும். கெட்ட கனவின் நிமித்தத்தையும் பலனையும் விலக்கி அருள்வீர் என்று வேண்டுகிறோம். அப்போது நல்ல கனவுகள் வரட்டும் என்பது உள்ளார்ந்த அர்த்தமாகிறது.
சிலரது கனவுகள் கனவு காண்போரின் ஆழ்மனதின் செய்திகளாகக் கருதப்பட்டன. இவைகள் பலிக்கும் போது ஆச்சரியத்தால் பிரமிக்கிறோம்.
முதலில் ராமாயண இதிஹாஸத்தில் வரும் ஒரு முக்கியமான கனவைக் காண்போம். அசோகவனத்தில் கற்பின் கனலியாம் சீதை அல்லல் பட, விபீஷணனின் பெண்ணான திரிஜடை, தான் கண்ட கனவை சீதையிடம் கூறுவது பிரசித்தமானது. வால்மீகியும், கம்பனும் இதை அற்புதமாகச் சித்தரிக்கின்றனர்.
ராமர் சீதையுடனும் இலக்குமணனுடனும் அனைவரும் துதிக்க எழுந்தருளுவதையும், ராவணன் மொட்டைத்தலையனாய், எண்ணெய் இட்டுக் கொண்டு, சிவந்த ஆடையுடன், குடித்து விட்டு, அலரிப்பூ மாலை அணிந்து, கறுப்பு ஆடை உடுத்திய பெண்ணால் இழுக்கப்படுவதையும், கழுதை பூட்டிய ரதத்தில் தெற்குத் திசை நோக்கிச் செல்வதையும் சுந்தரகாண்டம், இருபத்தேழாம் சர்க்கம் விவரிக்கிறது.
கம்பனோ ஒரு படி மேலே போய், காட்சிப் படலத்தில் திரிஜடை சீதையிடம், “ நீ தூங்குவதே இல்லை என்பதால் உனக்குக் கனவே தோன்றுவதில்லை – துயில் இலை ஆதலின், கனவு தோன்றல – என்று சொல்லி விட்டு, நான் ஒரு கனவு கண்டேன் என்று தான் கண்ட கனவைச் சொல்லஆரம்பிக்கிறாள். கனவை விவரித்தவள், பாதிக் கனவில் என்னை நீ எழுப்பி விட்டாய்; ஆகவே கனவு முடியவில்லை – என்னை நீ உணர்த்தினை; முடிந்தது இல் – என்று கூற சீதை, “அன்னையே! அதன் குறை காண்- இன்னமும் துயில்க”, என்று கூறி மீதி கனவையும் காண வேண்டுவதாக நயம்படச் சித்தரிப்பது அனைவரும் படித்து ரசிக்க வேண்டிய ஒன்றாகும்!
அடுத்து இலக்கியக் கனவு ஒன்றைப் பார்ப்போம்! இளங்கோவடிகள் சிலப்பதிகாரத்தில் கண்ணகியின் கனவிற்காகவே ‘கனாத்திறம் உரைத்த காதை’ என்று ஒரு காதையைப் படைத்துள்ளார்.
கண்ணகி கோவலனைப் பிரிந்து பல நாட்களாகி விட்ட நிலையில் அவளது நிலை கண்டு தோழிமாரெல்லாம் வருந்தி இரங்க, பார்ப்பனத் தோழியான தேவந்தி என்பவள் கண்ணகி துன்பம் தீர்ந்து கணவனைப் பெற வேண்டும் என்று கோவில் சென்று இறைவனை வேண்டி பிறகு கண்ணகியிடம் சென்று, “கணவனைப் பெறுக” என்று வாழ்த்துகிறாள். அதற்கு கண்ணகி, “நீ இப்படிக் கூறுவதால் நான கணவனைப் பெறுவேன். ஆனால் நான் ஒரு கனவு கண்டேன். அதில் நானும் என் கணவரும் வேறொரு ஊருக்குச் செல்கிறோம். அங்கு அவர் பெயரில் வீண் பழி உண்டாகி, தீங்கு ஏற்பட, நான் அரசருடன் வாதிட்டேன். அதனால் அந்த ஊருக்கும் தீங்கு ஏற்பட்டது” என்கிறாள். இதற்குப் பரிகாரமாக சோமகுண்டம், சூரிய குண்டம் ஆகிய இரு துறைகளில் மூழ்கி காமவேள் கோட்டத்தைத் தொழுமாறு தேவந்தி வேண்ட, கண்ணகியோ, “பீடன்று” என்று கூறி அதை மறுத்து விடுகிறாள்.அதாவது கற்புடைப் பெண்டிருக்கு கணவனைத் தவிர இன்னொரு தெய்வம் இல்லை என்பதால் அப்படி மறுத்து விடுகிறாள்.
கண்ணகியின் வாயிலாக இப்படி கோவலனுக்குப் பின்னால் ஏற்பட இருக்கும் தீமையை இளங்கோவடிகள் சுட்டிக் காட்டுவதோடு, மீண்டும் கோவலன் வாயிலாக கண்ணகி துயருறப் போவதையும் காட்டுகிறார்.
மாடலன் என்னும் மறையோன் கோவலனிடம், “ இப்பிறவியில் நல்லதையே செய்த உனக்கு ஏற்படும் இந்தத் துன்பம் நீ செய்த முன் வினைப் பயனோ” என்று வருந்திக் கூற, கோவலன், “ மதுரையில் ஒரு வஞ்சகனால் தனக்குத் துன்பம் நேர்வதாயும், அதனால் கண்ணகி துன்பப்படுவதாயும் மாதவி மணிமேகலையை புத்தருக்கு அர்ப்பணிப்பதாகவும்” தான் கனவில் கண்டதாகக் கூறுகிறான்.
அடுத்து கனவு இல்லாத நல்ல இலக்கியமே இல்லை. உலகப் பொதுமறையாம் திருக்குறளில் திருவள்ளுவர் ‘கனவு’ என்ற சொல்லைப் பத்து இடங்களில் கையாள்கிறார். (குறட்பாக்கள் 819,1054,1211 முதல் 1220 முடிய காணலாம்). ‘கனவு நிலை உரைத்தல்’ என்று ஒரு அதிகாரத்தையே கனவினுக்குத் தந்து தலைவியின் கனவுகளையும் அதன் தேவையையும் அவர் உணர்த்துவது படித்து இன்புறத் தக்கது.
இப்படி தமிழ் இலக்கியக் கனவுகளைத் தொகுத்தால் அதுவே ஒரு பெரிய நூலாகி விடும்.
இப்படிப்பட்ட இலக்கியக் கனவுகள் ஒரு புறம் இருக்க, உலகத்திலுள்ள மிக பிரம்மாண்டமானதும் முக்கியமானதுமான படைப்புகள் பல கனவுகள் மூலமாக உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன என்பது ஆச்சரியம் ஊட்டும் ஒரு உண்மையாகும்.
உலக சரித்திரத்தையே ‘A Study of History’ என்ற பெயரில் 12 பாகங்களாக எழுதி வெளியிட்டார் பிரபல வரலாற்றுப் பேரறிஞரான ஆர்னால்டு டாயின்பி.
30 லட்சம் சொற்கள் அடங்கிய அற்புதமான இந்த நூலை ஆராய்ந்து எழுதுவது என்பது மனித முயற்சிக்கு அப்பாற்பட்ட ஒன்றாகும்.
இதை எப்படி எழுத முடிந்தது என்று அவரே கூறி உள்ளார். படுத்தவுடன் கனவிலே பக்கம் பக்கமாகச் சொற்கள் அடங்கிய காட்சிகள் விரியுமாம். எழுந்தவுடன் அதை அப்படியே அவர் எழுதி விடுவாராம். கனவில் அகக் கண்ணில் விரிந்த காட்சிகள் படலம் படலமாக வர உலக சரித்திரம் மிளிர்ந்தது. இல்லையேல் இவ்வளவு துல்லியமான உலக சரித்திரத்தை ஆராய்ந்து எழுத யாரால் தான் முடியும்?
கடவுளுக்கும் மனிதனுக்கும் உள்ள தொடர்பைப் பற்றி விளக்கப் புகுந்த அவர் அதற்கு விடையாக அமைவது தனது கனவு ஒன்று தான் என்றும் கூறியுள்ளார்.
இந்தக் கனவில் யார்க்ஷைரில் ஆம்பிள்ஃபோர்த் அப்பேயில் (Abbey of Ampleforth) பெனிடிக்டின் பீடத்தின் மேல் உள்ள சிலுவையின் அடிப்பாகத்தைப் பிடித்துக் கொண்டு தான் இருப்பதை அவர் கண்டார். பிறகு தெளிவான லத்தீன் மொழியில் கம்பீரமான ஒரு அசரீரி ஒலித்தது : ஆம்ப்ளெக்ஸ் எக்ஸ்பெக்டா!
இதற்கு “பற்றிக் கொள்; காத்திரு – CLING AND WAIT – என்று பொருள்.
இதையும் அவரே விவரித்துள்ளார்.
ராபர்ட் லூயி ஸ்டீவன்ஸனையும் அவர் எழுதிய டாக்டர் ஜெகில் அண்ட் மிஸ்டர் ஹைட் (Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde) என்ற உலக பிரசித்தி பெற்ற நாவலையும் அறியாதவர் இருக்க முடியாது. இதுவும் ஒரு கனவுப் படைப்பே தான்.
அவர் இது பற்றிக் கூறினார் இப்படி: “ மனிதனது இரட்டை பர்சனாலிட்டியை சித்தரிக்க வெகு காலம் முயன்று வந்தேன். The Travelling Companion என்ற ஒரு நாவலைக் கூட எழுதினேன். அசிங்கமாக இருக்கிறது என்று பதிப்பாசிரியர் திருப்பி அனுப்பி விடவே அதை எரித்து விட்டேன். இரண்டு நாட்கள் மூளையைக் கசக்கினேன். இரண்டாம் நாள் இரவு ஜன்னலில் ஒரு காட்சியைக் கண்டேன். அது இரண்டாகப் பிரிந்தது. அதில் ஹைட் ஒரு பொடியைச் சாப்பிட்டுத் தன்னைத் தேடி வருபவர்களுடன் இணைந்து அவர்களிலே ஒருவனாக மாறி விடுகிறான். மூன்று சீன்கள் கனவில் வந்தன. மீதி முழுவதையும் எழுந்தவுடன் எழுதி விட்டேன்”
ஈரோட்டிலே மிகுந்த ஏழ்மையான ஒரு குடும்பத்திலே பிறந்து உலகையே தன் கணிதக் கண்டுபிடிப்புகளால் பிரமிக்க வைத்த சீனிவாச ராமானுஜன் தனது கண்டுபிடிப்புகள் அனைத்திற்கும் காரணம் தனது குல தெய்வமான நாமகிரி அம்மன் தான் என்று வலியுறுத்திக் கூறியுள்ளார்.
நாமகிரி என் நாவில் எழுதுவாள்; கனவு மூலம் அவள் எனக்கு உள்ளொளி தருவாள் – Namakiri would bestow insight in dreams – என்று அடிக்கடி கூறுவது அவர் வழக்கம்.
பேப்பர் வாங்கக் கூட காசில்லாமல் தேற்றங்களை சிலேட்டில் எழுதி அழித்து நிரூபண முடிவுகளை மட்டும் படிகள் – STEPS – இல்லாமல் அவர் ஒரு நோட்டுப்புத்தகத்தில் எழுதி வைக்க, அதை அவிழ்க்க முடியாமல் கணிதமேதைகள் இன்றும் திணறும் நிலையை ஏற்படுத்தினார் அவர். தான் விழித்தவுடன் தனது கனவில் வந்த அனைத்தையும் அவர் எழுதி விடுவது வழக்கம். ‘An equation has no meaning unless it expresses a thought of God – இறைசிந்தனையை ஒரு சமன்பாடு வெளிப்படுத்தவில்லையெனில் அது அர்த்தமில்லாத ஒன்று தான் – என்ற அவரது கூற்று எண்ணி எண்ணி வியப்புறத் தக்கது. கடவுளும் கணிதமும் ஒன்றியிருப்பதை விளக்கும் ஒரு கூற்று அது.
கணித மேதை பெர்ட்ரண்ட் ரஸ்ஸலும் திணற வைக்கும் பிரச்சினைகளுக்குத் தனது கனவுகளே தீர்வுகளைத் தந்ததாகக் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.
வேதியல் துறையில் மேதையாக விளங்கியவர் ஜெர்மானியரான ஃப்ரெடெரிக் கெக்குலே. 1865ஆம் ஆண்டு ஒரு நாள் மதியம் அவர் கனவிலே ஒரு பாம்பு தன் வாலைக் கடிப்பது போலக் கனவு கண்டார். இதிலிருந்து பென்ஸீன் அமைப்புக்கான கருத்து உருவாகி பென்ஸீன் வளையத்தைக் கண்டுபிடித்தார். அவரது சீடர்களில் மூவர் நோபல் பரிசை வென்றனர்.
பல பிரபலங்களின் மரணங்கள் கனவின் மூலமாக முன்னரேயே அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட செய்திகளை உலக வரலாறு பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறது. அமெரிக்க ஜனாதிபதியான் ஆப்ரஹாம் லிங்கன் 1865ஆம் ஆண்டு ஏப்ரல் மாதம் தான் கண்ட கனவைத் தனது நண்பர்கள் வட்டத்தில் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார். அவர் வெள்ளை மாளிகையில் படுத்திருந்த போது அழுகின்ற ஒரு ஓலக்குரல் கேட்டு அது வந்த திசையில் செல்கிறார். அங்கு கிழக்குப் பக்க அறையில் ஒரு சவப்பெட்டி இருக்கிறது. மக்கள் வெள்ளம் அலை மோதி இருக்க ஓவ்வொருவராக சவத்தின் முகத்தைப் பார்த்து விட்டு நகர்ந்து சென்று கொண்டிருந்தனர். இறந்தது யார் என்று லிங்கன் அங்கிருந்த காவலரைக் கேட்க அவர் “நமது ஜனாதிபதி தான் அவர், அவரை ஒருவன் கொலை செய்து விட்டான்” என்கிறார். இந்தக் கனவை லிங்கன் கூறியதைக் கேட்ட அவரது நண்பரான வார்ட் ஹில் லமோன் (Ward Hill Lamon) என்பவர் கொலை நடந்த பிறகு எழுதப்பட்ட தனது நூலான Recollections of Lincoln என்ற நூலில் பதிவு செய்துள்ளார்.

(1828 – 1906)
ஹென்ரிக் ஜோஹன் இப்சென் (HENRIK JOHAN IBSEN) நார்வே நாட்டில் புகழ்பெற்ற எழுத்தாளர். இவர் ஒரு நாடக ஆசிரியர்.
தெற்கு நார்வேயில் ஸ்கீய்ன் என்னும் ஊரில் பிறந்தார். இவரது தந்தை ஒரு பணக்கார வர்த்தகர். ஆனால் 1836-இல் அவர் செல்வம் அனைத்தையும் இழந்து ஏழையானார்.
இப்சென் ஒரு மருந்துக் கடையில் வேலைக்குச் சேர்ந்தார். ஆனால் அவருக்குப் பிடிக்கவில்லை. அவருடைய நாட்டம் முழுவதும் எழுத்திலேயே இருந்தது. கடையில் வேலைபார்த்துக் கொண்டே கவிதைகளை எழுதத் தொடங்கினார். ஆனால் அவை பாராட்டும்படியாக இல்லை. இதற்குப் பின்
நார்வே நாட்டின் தலை நகரான ஆஸ்லோ நகருக்குச் (OSLO) சென்று பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் படித்தார். அங்கு நாடகத்துறையில் ஆர்வம் கொண்ட பலருடன் டொடர்பு ஏற்பட்டது. படிப்பில் கூட கவனம் செலுத்தாது நாடகக் கலைஞர்களுடன் நேரத்தை செலவிட்டார். இறுதியில் படிப்பை நிறுத்திவிட்டு நாடகம் எழுதத் துவங்கினார்.
1859-ஆம் ஆண்டில் ஆஸ்லோ நகரில் அவருடைய முதலாவது நாடகம் மேடை ஏறியது. இதைத் தொடர்ந்து BERGEN நகரில் நாடக இயக்குநராக நியமிக்கப்பட்டார். இதற்கு ஏழாண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகு அவருடைய புகழ்பெற்ற முதல் நாடகம் “LOVE’S COMEDY” வெளியானது. காதல் – திருமணம் பற்றிய இந்த நாடகம் பெரும் அதிர்ச்சி அலைகளைப் பரப்பியது. இது பெரிய சர்ச்சையை ஏற்படுத்தியது. மக்கள் நாடகக் கொட்டகையை நாட மறுத்து விட்டார்கள்.
இதற்கடுத்த 30 ஆண்டுகள் இப்சென் அவர்கள் இதாலியிலும் ஜெர்மனியிலும் காலந் தள்ளினார். அப்போதுதான் அவர் மிகவும் சிறந்த நாடகங்களைப் படைத்தார். “GHOSTS”, THE MASTER BUILDER, A DOLL’S HOUSE (பொம்மை வீடு), ROSMERSHOLM, THE WILD DUCK ஆகிய நாடகங்கள் வெளியிடப்பட்டன.
கடின உழைப்பு இன்சென் அவர்களைப் பாதித்தது. 74-ஆவது வயதுவரை வாழ்ந்தாலும் கடைசி 4 ஆண்டுகள் மனநிலை பாதிக்கப் பட்டநிலையில் வாழ நேரிட்டது.

British Indian chemist in Millennium Tech Prize winning team ; Gnanamayam Team doubly happy!
Cambridge University chemists Shankar Balasubramanian and David Klenerman were on Tuesday declared the winners of the 2020 Millennium Technology Prize, a prestigious global science and technology prize awarded for their development of revolutionary sequencing techniques which means DNA can now be read in super-fast times.
The prize, awarded by Technology Academy Finland (TAF) at two-year intervals since 2004 when Sir Tim Berners-Lee was honoured for his discovery of the World Wide Web to highlight the extensive impact of science and innovation on the wellbeing of society, is worth Euro 1 million.
Sir Balasubramanian, an India-born British professor of medicinal chemistry, and Sir Klenerman, a British biophysical chemist, co-invented the Solexa-Illumina Next Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS), technology enabling fast, accurate, low-cost and large-scale genome sequencing the process of determining the complete DNA sequence of an organism’s make-up, which is proving crucial in humanity’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The duo went on to co-found the company Solexa to make the technology more broadly available to the world.
President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinisto, who is the Patron of the prize, presented the award to the scientists in a virtual ceremony on Tuesday.
The announcement of the 2020 award was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Video taken out of context, Ramdev has no ill will against modern science: Patanjali
Claiming that a video purportedly showing yoga guru Ramdev criticising allopathy is “truncated” and taken “out of context”, Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust on Saturday said he has utmost regard for doctors and bears no ill will against modern science.
The clarification came after the Indian Medical Association (IMA) demanded strict action against Ramdev, saying he had misled people by making “unlearned” statements against allopathy and defaming scientific medicine.
Citing the video circulating on social media, the IMA said Ramdev is seen saying that ‘allopathy is such a stupid science”.
“We demand an unconditional public apology from Ramdev to allopathy and its practitioners,” the apex doctors’ body said.
However, issuing a statement, the Haridwar-based Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust said the video has been taken “out of context”.
“It is clarified that the truncated version of the video is totally out of context of what is sought to be conveyed by Swami jee,” it said.
Ramdev has “utmost regards” for doctors and support staff who have been working day and night during such a challenging time of the pandemic, as per the statement by the yoga guru’s Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust.
He was “reading out a forwarded WhatsApp message received by him and various other members who were participating in the event”, it added.
“Swami jee has no ill-will against the modern science and good practitioners of modern medicine. What is being attributed against him is false and nugatory,” said the statement signed by Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust General Secretary Acharya Balakrishna.
Ramdev urges to keep the “unity among all the medical practitioners and their treatment-ways” in order to overcome the present challenge successfully in a timely manner, it added.
“He believes that allopathy is a progressive science; and a combination of allopathy, ayurveda and yoga will be beneficial to everyone during such difficult times,” the statement said.

Cow urine protects from Covid, planting tulsi, peepal can prevent oxygen crisis: says BJP MP Pragya Thakur
As Madhya Pradesh battles a second wave of Covid-19 Bhopal MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur has advised people to consume gau mutra (cow-urine) of a desi (Indian) cow for its benefit in fighting lung infections, and plant trees like peepal and tulsi to prevent oxygen shortage.
Pargya made the statement on Sunday while addressing a gathering at Sant Nagar, where she had come to donate 25 oxygen concentrators to Hedgewar hospital.
Speaking at the event, Pragya blamed ‘people of devious mindset’ for damaging the environment and cutting trees, which, she said, has given rise to such a situation. “We should plant trees like Neem, Banyan, Tulsi, Peepal and other plants that give out oxygen 24 hours. Had we planted these trees, we wouldn’t have faced these problems today. If someone is responsible for today’s situation, then it is such people,” said Thakur.
And as ‘repentance’, she urged people to pledge to plant trees. Every family should plant 10 trees in the name of their family members and nurture them and give them life, she added “We have to give them fertiliser, water and bring them to life, they will give us life in return and there will be no panic-like situation for oxygen,”.
She herself pledged to plant one crore trees in Bhopal and provide water tankers for its irrigation, explaining that it is easier to plant trees than to nurture them.
Thakur then went on to enumerate the benefits of drinking the urine of a ‘desi cow’. Thakur said, “If we drink gau mutra of a desi cow, it cures us of the infections in our lungs. I am in a lot of pain but I drink gau mutra everyday. Because of this, I don’t have to take any medicines for corona and neither am I infected with corona and with god’s blessings, it will remain so as I am taking the right kind of medicines (gau mutra).”
She explained that she consumes gau mutra after offering prayers saying, “Aap hamare liye amrut ke swaroop hai, mein aapko grahan kar rahi hu. Aap mere bheetar ki raksha kare kyu ki mera jeevan rashtre ke liye hai (you are like amrit to me, I am consuming you. Please protect me because my life is for the nation),”
Pragya Singh Thakur has been facing allegations of being absent in Covid relief from her constituency of Bhopal, which is the district with the second highest case load in MP. Several posters stating ‘Pragya Singh Thakur has gone missing’ had surfaced in Bhopal last month and many others had questioned her absence from her constituency. She, however, stated that she had been providing all help while operating from her office, and her ‘only mistake’ was that she failed to publicise her work on social media.

FIR against Sharjeel Usmani over ‘objectionable’ tweets
Maharashtra Police have registered an FIR against former Aligarh Muslim University student leader Sharjeel Usmani in Maharashtra’s Jalna district for allegedly posting some objectionable tweets, a police official said on Thursday.
The complainant, Ambadas Ambhore, who hails from Ambad in Jalna and works with the Hindu Jagran Manch, has alleged that Usmani used disrespectful words for Lord Ram in some of his recent posts on Twitter and hurt religious sentiments, he said.
Based on the complaint, the Ambad police registered a case against Usmani on Wednesday night under Indian Penal Code Section 295-A (malicious act outraging religious feelings) and provisions of the Information Technology Act, the official said.
The case will be transferred to the Jalna cyber department, he added.
Earlier this year, the Pune police had registered a case against Usmani under IPC Section section 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on the ground religion, etc) over his speech made during the Elgar Parishad conclave held there on January 30.
Usmani had recorded his statement with the Pune police in this connection in March.

Portals of Kedarnath open; first puja held on behalf of PM Modi
The portals of Kedarnath opened on Monday after a six-month winter break with the first puja being held by priests on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, officials said.
Only a select few people attended the temple’s opening ceremony in view of the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic. It is for the second consecutive year that COVID has cast a shadow on the pilgrimage to the temple which has been kept out of bounds for pilgrims in view of rising coronavirus cases.
A Chardham Devasthanam Board official said the first puja was held by priests on behalf of the prime minister as the gates of the famous Himalayan temple were opened at 5 am.
Expressing happiness at the opening of the temple, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat prayed for the welfare and good health of the people.

In order to improve the basic understanding of mathematics from Class I to the master’s level, a mathematical society, Himachal Ganita Parishad (HGP), will start a drive in the state with a focus on remote areas. It aims to create interest in mathematics and activate inbuilt instinct for mathematics in human mind.
“We have planned different schemes for the awareness of Indian mathematics and Vedic mathematics among students. The idea is to improve the basic understanding of mathematics from Class I to the master’s level and create an interest among students towards the subject,” said president of the parishad Prof PL Sharma, chairman, Department of Mathematics, HPU.

Kolkata Durga idol makers anxious about business in second Covid-hit year
The second wave of coronavirus has made the artisans of Kumartuli, the famed colony of clay modellers in north Kolkata, anxious if they are facing the same scenario of last year when Durga Puja organisers ordered smaller, less priced idols to suit their reduced budget induced by the pandemic.
Kumartuli supplies idols of gods and goddesses to various parts of the country and abroad and the artisans earn the most during the Durga Puja, the largest festival of West Bengal.
The modellers said they are also worried that the already dwindling number of their workers may further go down as the apprehension of a total lockdown from mid-May is gaining ground in the neighbourhood where many people have been affected by COVID-19.
“Most of the well-known artists of Kumartuli have got a few orders (of Durga idol) before the sudden rise in cases and various restrictions were imposed,” Sujit Pal, one of the leading clay modellers in the potter’s colony, told PTI.
The Durga Puja festival will be held in October this year.
