THIS IS THE THIRD AND LAST PART OF RIG VEDIC POET’S UNIQUE DIALOGUE WITH TWO RIVERS.

We saw in the past two days a unique conversation between the seer Visvamitra and two rivers Vipas and Sutudri. They are identified with modern day rivers Beas and Sutlej.

Here is my commentary on the last five mantras of 3-33

3-33-9

Visvamitra addresses the rivers as Sisters! In the third mantra/stanza we saw the rivers as Mother. Hindus are the only people in the world who worship rivers as Goddesses. All the rivers have feminine names and each one has a legend. The poet requests the rivers to flow below the axle of the wagon and car.

3-33-10

Here the rivers speak. They use two beautiful similes. Yes ; we would lower our level ‘like a nursing mother and yield like a maiden to her lover.

These types of similes are seen throughout the Rig Veda. We see well-knit family connections with love and affection between the relatives. Similes of husband and wife coming together, children running into the garments of mother, son getting the warmth of his father, lover and lady love hugging together etc are found in Vedas. Very often cow and calf are compared to mother and child.

3-33-11

Here we read about the poet and his clan the Bharatas crossing the river.  The poet urges the rivers to flow rapidly (after their crossing). Indra’s help in feeding the rivers (through rain) is also mentioned. Poet’s words “ I crave your favour who deserve our worship” are to be noted. In the eighth stanza we saw rivers saying NAMASTE. Even today this greeting is used by all Indians. Here Visvamitra says they/the rivers deserve worship.

Today Hindus worship not only rivers but also water. Hindu brahmins sprinkle water on their head thrice a day praising water as medicine and the take water in sips as well.

3-33-12

Here the poet concludes saying they have all crossed the river and it can roll swiftly onward.

Hindus believe that saints and seers like Visvamitra can control natural forces such as rivers, rain and wind, even ocean. In the Ramayana we read about Rama commanding the sea to obey. In the Bhagavata Purana we see river Yamuna parting away to give way to Vasudeva carrying Baby Krishna. In Adi Shankara’s life we see his command over flooded river. In Sangam Tamil literature Rama commands the birds in a banyan tree and then they shut their mouths. It happened when Rama was consulting Civil engineer Nala about building a bridge across the sea. So I would take these stanzas as water miracle performed by Visvamitra. Two rivers obeyed his commands and the additional message is to show respect and reverence to Rivers.

3-33-13

Griffith has added a foot note saying that it is in different metre and so a later addition. Stanzas with different metres occur in ancient Tamil and Sanskrit literature. Not only the differences in metre but also the repetitions. Here in 13th mantra we see the same message repeated.

Prof . Wilson following Sayana, gives a somewhat different version of the stanza:

Let your waves/rivers so flow that the pin of the yoke may be above their waters; leave the trace full, and may the two streams exempt from misfortune or defect and uncensured, exhibit no (present) increase.

I take it as a blessing to the rivers given by Visvamitra.

This hymn shows the environmental awareness among ancient Indians. ‘Humble us not mid men’ in the eighth stanza is the message Visvamitra gives to humanity through the rivers. Never treat rivers with contempt; never pollute them.

Confluence of Sutudri/Sutlej and the Vipas/Beas takes place near Amritsar in Punjab.

FOSSIL SOCIETIES: ARE HINDUS TURNING FOSSILS ? – 2 – Part 3

BY R.Nanjappa

BRAHMIN NEEDS KSHATRIYA PROTECTION

The Brahmin always depended on the protection of the rulers and support of the others. As Tiruvalluvar says in the Kural:

The Sceptre of the ruler is the basic support of the science of the Brahmins and dharma.                                543

The udders of the cow will yield less milk, and the Brahmin will forget his science (learning of Veda ) if the king does not rule with justice.  560

Who was the Creative Minority?

Can we say the Brahmins were the “Creative Minority ” who helped meet the challenges in the past? Maybe not. Nor did they become a “dominant ” minority as they always depended on the support of others. The theory of Brahmin superiority is a silly myth. In Hindu civilization, the “creative minority” have been the Seers and Saints. Many of our ancient Rishis like Visvamitra, Vashishtha, Vyasa were not pure Brahmins. Nor was Valmiki, our Adikavi. Our two most popular and dominant Avataras -Rama and Krishna- are Kashatriyas, while Brahmin Avatars like Vamana and Parashurama are not worshipped! But Brahmins acted as the preservers of Dharma and in that sense they were a protective, though not a pro-active minority !

The Saint -singers united the Hindus and helped them meet the Muslim challenge. But a new wave of domination came with the Europeans who changed our society wholesale, with the Christian missionaries on their side to pose a direct challenge to our religion. Sri Ramakrishna appeared at that time and reassured the Hindus of the soundness of their faith, though some practices required change. Vivekananda took the battle to the world stage. Sri Aurobindo declared India to be a Goddess, and its freedom a spiritual necessity. For a time it looked as if Hindus would reassert themselves.

MODERN INDIA IS  KHICHDI- NOT HINDU CIVILIZATION

But this did not happen :
1. The leaders of Independent India did not follow Vivekananda or Sri Aurobindo. They have generally been anti- Hindu  (in the name of secularism) and reformist, following Western trends and ideas.

 2. The followers of Ramakrishna have made him a cult figure, limiting his appeal.
3.The system of education introduced by the British still continues and it is basically anti-Hindu in spirit and substance.
4.Christians and Muslims have regrouped and now pose a bigger threat than ever to our religion and civilisation.
5.Hindus who lacked common leadership have now lost the sense of their Hindu social identity almost totally!

A Hindu is even apologetic in admitting that he is Hindu! The modern political Hindus have invented a hundred things to divide themselves. Just one example:  Muslims or Christians do not fight over language- only Hindus do! Hindus-especially the educated ones- do not support the cause of the Cow or Sanskrit! They allow their temples to be run by a so-called secular government!
The Jews were driven out of their homeland. Hindus are getting immobilised in their own land- which is no longer de jure Hindu country!

HINDUISM – TURNING FOSSIL ?

But perhaps the greatest weakness is that Hinduism depends upon many social arrangements and mutual interactions among social groups. These are disintegrating. Today, the main avenues of interaction are economic and political. Society is reaching such a stage and shape that Hinduism in the traditional sense [as Vedic religion] cannot be practiced. The challenges are so overwhelming and the creative instinct is so conspicuously absent among the Hindus, that it seems Hindus are on the way to becoming fossils- unless a new leadership emerges, and springs of authentic renewal are activated.
We may participate in a formality without experiencing the reality.

[Why and how Hindus have been reduced to such a state requires further exploration.

Before that we have to see whether a society still needs a religion as the cementing bond.]
