Greatest of the Modern Tamil Poets Subrahmanya Bharati met Sister Nivedita on his way back to Madras from the Benares Congress Conference. This brief meeting took place at Dum Dum, Calcutta in 1905. This meeting has changed Bharati’s life to a great extent.

Bharati went back via Calcutta with the intention of meeting great Bengali patriots. He was fortunate to meet Nivedita. Their conversation turned towards women’s upliftment. Sister Nivedita casually asked Bharati whether he was married. He replied in the affirmative and immediately Nivedita asked him whether his wife also came with him now. Bharati told her that it was not a normal practice to take women to social and public functions.

This reply made Nivedita very angry. She admonished him and said that we should give equal importance and equal participation for women. This awakened Bharati and opened his eyes. From that day onwards, he had vowed to work for women’s liberation. He came back to Madras (Chennai) and started a separate Tamil magazine (Chakravarthini) for the women.

Just before leaving Dum Dum , Sister Nivedita gave him a leaf which she brought from the Holy Himalayas. She touched his head and blessed him. Bharati preserved this leaf until his death in 1921.

K S Raman in an article writes,

“It may be of interest to know that Bharati had handsomely acknowledged his deep sense of gratitude to the great woman Nivedita by dedicating his two books to her in which he says, ‘in a flash without the aid of speech or reasoning thou revealed to me the sacredness of service to the Motherland and glory of renunciation. To you who by virtue of thy piety and excellence became the spiritual daughter of Swami Vivekananda, I dedicate this book’.

In one of his poems also he speaks of the Sister in most glowing terms, which reads as under,
“An offering to Mercy
A Temple of Love
A sun to his spiritual darkness
Rain to the withering country
A fire to the scroll of meanness’

The enlightenment Bharati derived from the Sister can be gauged from the poems he sang in praise of women and their equal status.
It was Bharati, more than anybody else in Tamil Nadu, who worked untiringly for the social uplift of women and the essays and poems he wrote on this question were legion.

About Sister Nivedita, K S Raman adds,

Born of an Irish parentage at Dungannon (Northern Ireland) in 1867, and despite her manifold pursuits, Margaret Noble (later Nivedita) had the growing consciousness of uncertainty and despair in respect of religion; neither Christian doctrines nor the tenets of Buddhism could provide panacea toher disturbed mental state. The visit of Swami Vivekananda to England in 1895 and his teachings kindled Margaret’s latent religious aspirations and desire to serve humanity selflessly. Therefore, she came to India in 1898, and lived in a cottage at Belur with Swamiji’s other two American disciples, was subsequently initiated into Brahmacharya and given the name of Nivedita (the dedicated). The rest of her life of thirteen years in India were devoted to the cause of Indian freedom and emancipation and upliftment of Indian women till her death in 1911.

DR M ARAM, EDUCATIONIST AND SARVODAYA LEADER NARRATED THE FOLLOWING INCIDENT:

“This was in Sambalpur district, Orissa. We were walking on the Sambalpur- Bargarh road. Early morning.

Just a little while ago we had stopped by the road-side for meditation and prayer. The eastern sky facing which we were seated was a wonderous spectacle. The distant mist and the entire horizon were lit up in gorgeous red. Above the belt of orange and red, one could see some stars glimmering. it was that glorious period of transition when dusk departs and day dawns.

Now we had resumed walking. Vinobaji called me. I had gone the previous day,

October 9th, 1963. for consultations with him regarding the future plans of the Delhi-Peking Maitri Yatra. I had already given him a full report on the situation. We were to have further discussions on the matter later in the day. But now was the time to talk about matters of general interest.

The whole of Dakshin Bharat (South India) is walking with me! quipped Vinobhaji. And he explained:

That Sanyasi (pointing to a swamiji clad in saffron) comes from Kerala. This person (pointing to an elderly gentleman who helped editing Vinobhaji’s Essence of Quoran) comes from Andhra Pradesh. And he (pointing to Jayadev Bhai, long time associate and aide of Vinobhaji) is from Karnatak. And you from Tamil Nadu. South India is here with me!

We laughed one and all.

Tell us something about Bharati, I asked. What followed was a most interesting talk which all of us, about twenty five or so, enjoyed very much. Shri Nabhakrishna Choudry, former chief minister of Orissa, was one of those walking close to Vinobha and listening to his discourse.

First – I was then in Vellore jail. I read a book containing the essays of Bharathiyar.

(this Vinobhaji said in Tamil)

In an essay on education, Bharathiyar speaks about man. Science is discovering many new kinds of living organisms, he says. Germs that cause Cholera, germs that cause plague etc. But let us realize, Bharahtiyar says, the greatest of all living organisms is man himself. he flourishes over and above all living organisms. He is the greatest of all. This thought that the man is the supreme organism I got from Bharathiyar……………..”

Vinobhaji paused here. We were all appreciating the significance of his  remarks in thoughtful silence He continued:

Second – Bharathiyar felt a kinship with the whole universe, not only human beings and animals.

Vinobhaji said this in Tamil and then translated it into Hindi for benefit of others. The above lines mean—

The crow and the sparrow are our tribe

Continued V, not only living beings inanimate objects also.

The sea and the hills are our crowd.

this universal feeling I got from Bharathiyar.

Throughout the talk V referred to Bharathi  as Bharathiar, with the Tamil honorifix -ar.

friends from different parts of India speaking different languages particularly enjoyed the above two lines of Bharati as quoted by Vinobhaji.

Third –  Bharathi was a nationalist no doubt But his nationalism was rooted in our tradition of Ahimsa. he said

Even for the tiger that rushes to devour you

Entertain love…………..

The Andhra friend walking next to me enjoyed these lines very much . He told me PULI means tiger in Telugu also.

Now Vinobhaji  turned to me. He had in quick succession said so much in response to my simple request to say some about Bharathi. In a mischievous tone, he asked me: enough?

Some more please!

After a while, came the reply:

More next time!

Shri Balubhai, long time associate and secretary to V, was reminded of a well known line of b he tried to recall the line about NO FEAR. Immediately came  the words from Vinobhaji.

I told V that the basic idea of Bhoodan is to be found in the writings of Bharathi.

Vinobhaji said he knew about this and it has been published in Sarvodaya journals.

Let us look at two more verses from Bhartruharis.Niti sataka 38 and 39.

Famous Tamil poetess Avvaiyar said that the misers’ hoarded wealth will be taken away by the wicked people.

WHAT MISERS HAVE HOARDED THE WICKED WILL TAKE- Kondrai Venthan by Avvaiyar

Another Tamil poet who lived several hundred years after Bhartruhari said that the wealth of a miser is like the coconut in the feet of a dog. This is a Tamil proverb. The dog would neither use it nor it would allow anyone to use it. Both the poets have echoed what Bharturhari said below:-

दानं भोगो नाशस्तिस्रो
गतयो भवन्ति वित्तस्य ।
यो न ददाति न भुङ्क्ते
तस्य तृतीया गतिर्भवति ॥ 1.38 ॥

38. Giving, consuming, and loss, are the three ways

by which wealth is diminished. The man who neither

gives nor spends has yet the third way open to him.

39. A jewel is cut by the polishing stone ; a conqueror

in war is killed by weapons ; the elephant is weakened

by passion; the islands in a river become dry in the

autumn ; the moon wanes ; young women become languid

through pleasure, yet is their beauty nothing lessened :

so noble men who have diminished their wealth by giving.

The second sloka is also interesting which is already in Tamil and Sanskrit literature.

Though Bhartruhari gave lot of examples about an elephant, jewel, river, moon, what he wanted to convey is that it is worth to become poor or bankrupt by donating one’s wealth. We see such people in Tamil literature in Purananuru,an anthology of 400 verses composed approximately 2000 years ago.

Kalidasa in his Raghuvamsa Kavya gives three examples of Raghu (chapter 5-15),Athithi (17-7) and Dilipan (1-18). When a saint approached King Raghu for donations, Raghu came with mud pots. Then the saint says you have become poor by donating all your wealth. The other two verses compare the kings to the clouds that pour down rain without asking. Kalidasa says the king collects taxes only to give back to the people 1000 times more like the clouds which sucks seawater to give it back to earth as rain.

Comparing rainy clouds to a philanthropist is repeated often in Tamil literature. Mudamosi (Purananuru verse 127), a poet of Tamil Sangam, praises chieftain Ay Andiran to the rainy clouds in giving. He also added that only his wife retained her Mangala Sutra which cannot be taken out and donated. This is a typical simile in Hindu literature. In the same book Purananuru, Kapilan, praised Pari, another chieftain, as rainy clouds. He ironically asks why the whole world praises only Pari (chieftain) when Mari (rain) is more generous. The fact of the matter is Pari is more praised than Mari (Tamil word for rain).

Bhartruhari’s message is echoed by various poets in various ways. But Kalidasa and Sangam Tamil poets lived well before Bhartruhari. Hindu thinking about charity has been same until today.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU.

AND MORE

Bhartruhari quotations from Nitisataka

The heart of a great man is soft and delicate like a lotus flower when he is in prosperity. But his heart becomes hard like a rock when he is in adversity.
xxx
The path of one’s ultimate good is clearly shown in all the scriptures, it is non-violence, truth, not coveting others wealth, respect for gurus and silence when talking about others’ women.
xxx

Great persons always observe patience in adversity and peace full and forgiving in prosperity.
xxx

The deer, the fish and the noble person happily subsist on grass, water and contentment. Yet the hunter, the fisherman and the wicked persons are unnecessarily being hostile towards them.

xxx
How can one be happy living near a wicked person who has thrown moral s and ethics to the winds?

xxx

If a person observes silence he is considered dumb, if he talks too much he is called talkative. The path of service is mysterious and even the yogis are unable to understand it.
xxx
If one has greed, there is no necessity of other wickedness. If one cherishes back biting, there is no need for other sins.

NEW INSECT DISCOVERED- HUMBUG

The great naturalist Charles Darwin, was once approached by two small boys of the family whose guest he was.
They had caught a butterfly, a centipede, and a grass hopper.
Taking the centipede s body, the butterfly s wings, the beetle s head and the grasshoppers legs, they had glued them together to make an alarming and original insect.

We caught this bug in the field, they said innocently.
What kind of a bug is it Mr Darwin?
Darwin examined it with great solemnity.
Did you notice whether it hummed when you caught it,boys? He asked gravely.
Yes sir, they answered , trying to conceal their mirth
Just as I thought, said Darwin, it is a humbug.

Scientists anecdotes
When Gustavus III of Sweden was in Paris, a deputation of French scientist s called on him. It congratulated him on the happy fortune, that had given him so great a man as Scheele, the discoverer of Magnesium, as his subject and fellow countryman.
The king, who took small interest in the progress of science, felt somewhat ashamed that he should be so ignorant as never even to have heard of the renowned chemist.

He dispatched a courier at once with the laconic order
‘Scheele is to be immediately raised to the dignity of a count’.
‘His Majesty must be obeyed’, said the prime minister, ‘but who in hell is Scheele?’

A secretary was told to make inquiries.’
He came back with very full information, Scheele is a good sort of fellow, said he, a lieutenant in the artillery, a capital shot, and a first -rate hand at billiards.
The next day the lieutenant became a count, and the illustrious scientist was completely forgotten by King and court.

Practice of Yoga: Yoga is gaining popularity in various countries and Yogasana is proving to be a plausible alternative for persons of different ages for physical health improvement. It is necessary to know what Yoga is, in the spiritual sense.Yoga in general is the process of unification of Atma with — Paramatma (the Supreme Being), Shiva (one of the three principal Hindu Gods) with Shakti (Goddess Durga), Jeeva (the living being) with Brahma (The Supreme Entity) etc.– which are all the same in the ultimate analysis.

According to Patanjal Yoga Sutra (1/2) ‹Yoga chitta vruththii nirodha:– Yoga is the process by which one can control or absolutely stop the diverse and distracting waves of the mind. This control finally leads to a blissful state: Samadhi (trance). To reach this state you require first an undivided concentration on a single pure or divine object, whatever you like – yadhabhimat dhyanat va (Yogasutra 1/39). It is better for the believers to concentrate on the worship of God with all devotion in so many forms and through so many ways: ESWARA: PRANIDHAANAM VAA (Yoga Sutra 1/23).

Again if you can concentrate – on the heart (or the divine figure) of a saint who is above all material attachments whatsoever– this is also an easy and fruitful method to attain  Samadhi– Veetha raga vishyam va chiththam (Yogasutra : 1/36). This is Raja Yoga– the most popular yoga round the world– in a nut shell.

Besides Raja Yoga, there are other important schools of Yoga– Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Laya Yoga, Hatha yoga etc.– the target of all of them being almost the same: by different ways to reach the same destination– to get connected or united with the Supreme Power.

One should remember that only physical fitness and mental peace cannot bestow upon us the spiritual bliss, which is joy thousand times deeper, which is joy immense without any parallel.

That’s why the Upanishad has clearly declared : (NALPE SUKAMASTI H=BHUMIVA SUKAM (Chandokya Upanishad 7/23/1). There is no genuine joy in the physical world, it is all there in the spiritual realm.

Not only that, if you can have an electrical connection with the power house, you get so many benefits out of it so soon: light, fan, TV, computer etc all get energized or empowered in a moment. Similarly if we can establish a hot line with the Supreme Power through Yoga, we become empowered in the physical, mental, intellectual, material as well as spiritual planes simultaneously. But tragically enough, we are either totally disconnected or at best loose- connected with the Super Power. What a loss indeed, how very foolish – to keep ourselves away from this Super Power which is the  summum bonum of human life !!
