Tiru Valluvar , author of Tamil Veda Tirukkural, says that man becomes god in two of his couplets. Rig Veda, the oldest book in the world, said it thousands of years before the great Tamil saint Valluvar. Later it was echoed by other scholars including Seneca, St.Athanesius of Alexandria and Friedrich Schlegel.

“A man who leads an ideal life in this world,

Will be ranked amongst the Gods in heaven”- Kural 50

This is seen in all Avatars of Vishnu such as Rama, Krishna and Buddha (Buddha is one of the Ten Incarnations of Vishnu according to Jaya Deva of Orissa). Panini is praised as ‘Bhagavan Panini’ by Patanjali, the author of the Mahabhashya. Valluvar is also called ‘Deiva Pulavar/ Divine Poet’ by his contemporaries. In the same way Greeks praised Homer as ‘Divine Homer’. This makes it clear that anyone who lives a righteous life or contributes to society in a big way in a particular field, is praised as a person with Divinity.

Tamil saint Arunagirinathar praised the Boy Wonder of Tamil World Sambandar as an incarnation of Lord Skanda. In the same way Adi Shnakara was seen as an avatar of Skanda.

Commenting on the above Kural couplet , DR S M Diaz, Former I G of Police in Tamil Nadu says,

“This is one of the Kurals of Valluvar, which is oft quoted to praise and honour a person, who has lived the full span of the house holder’s life in the manner it should be, with love and virtue, eschewing all the evils that beset life , and at the same time practising Aram/Dharma. Valluvar himself is believed to have led such an ideal life.”

“Such a man has certainly achieved life’s purpose, which is also people’s acclamation of his virtue on earth, as much as eternal reward received at god’s hands. The passage from Seneca’s On Mercy Book 1, quoted under Kural 34, is relevant here again, for it recognises virtue itself as the most fitting reward for the virtuous but still asks, ‘Have I of all mortals….. been chosen to serve on earth as Vicar of all the Gods?” Similarly on Book 1 on Providence, Seneca says, “between good men and the Gods there exists a friendship brought about by virtue”. Seneca therefore goes half the Valluvar way.


Kural 413

“Those who in this world enjoy instruction which is the food of the ear, are equal to the Gods, who enjoy the food of the sacrifice”- Kural 413

Here Valluvar use the word Havis (avi) that is used 1000s of times in the Vedas. Havis is rice ball with ghee placed in the sacrificial fire by the Brahmins everyday.

Parithiar ,one of the ten ancient learned commentators on Tirukkural, by pointing out that the Gods, though in heaven, accept sacrificial offerings made to them on earth, and in like reciprocal manner, those who have listened and reaped the harvest of instructions from the wise, have acquired a heavenly accomplishment, which makes them comparable to the Gods”.

Here the Tamil word used by Valluvar is ‘Kelvi’ (that which is heard/ instruction) ; kelvi is Sruthi/Veda (that which is heard)

So I will take it as the learned people of the Vedic world. Valluvar’s word Havis in the same couplet is confirming it.

Manu and other law makers praise Brahmins as Devas/ Divinities on Earth (Bhu Surah) because of this Sruti (Knowledge Heard). Instead of looking at the caste one must at look at the learning. Satapata Brahmana book use it for both Brahmins and the scholars.

It says,

Ye brahmanah sushruvamso

Anoosaanaaste manushye devaah


Vidhwaamso hi devaah

SB.2-2-26, 2-4-3-14 & 3-7-3-10


Rig Veda Hymn 1-20-8

“As ministering priests they (RIBHUS) held, by pious acts they won themselves,

A share in sacrifice with Gods.”

Here Ribhus are praised because they become equal to Gods by their pious acts.

Who are Ribhus?

The Vedic commentators give us the background of Vedic Gods Ribhus.

“Devaaya Janmane , the divince class of the Ribhus, are the three sons of Sudhanvan, who are the descendants of Angiras. They were named severally Rbhu, Vibhvan and Vaaja and styled collectively Rbhus from the name of the eldest. Through their assiduous performance of good works, they attained divinity and become entitled to receive praise and adoration. They are supposed to live in the solar sphere and there is an indistinct identification of them with the rays of the sun; but, whether typical or not, they prove the admission, at an early date of the doctrine that man might become divinities – Wilson.

Prof. Wilson’s comment is quoted in the Griffith Translation of the Rig Veda.

To put it in a nutshell, One can become God by one’s good deeds is a concept supported by the Rig Vedic poets and Tamil Poets.  And this is not the only place we come across such a belief. The Upanishads proclaim loud and clear Tat Tvam Asi ( You are That) and Aham Brahmaasmi ( I am Brahman).

Philosophy in action

In Plato’s time, “philosopher” meant a lover of  “wisdom”. This wisdom meant more than book knowledge, or mere knowledge of the world, and love meant more than mere belief. In those far off days, philosophy meant a way of living: philosophers did not merely believe in or preach something, but lived that belief. No one exemplifies this better than Plato’s own master Socrates. Convicted on trumped-up charges, he was condemned to die by drinking hemlock. His friends urged him to escape and leave the city, and they could bribe the prison guards to arrange that. But Socrates would not agree. He believed that the soul was immortal, and bodily death did not matter. Secondly he loved his city Athens, and was its true son and citizen: he would obey the city’s laws, even if there was a miscarriage of justice in his case. So he drank the hemlock. And thereby showed that he was a true philosopher! Socrates died poor! He did not charge a fee for his teaching!

Philosophy is not fun!

Centuries later, Roman Seneca summed up the situation:

“Philosophy isn’t a parlour trick or made for show. It is not concerned with words, but with facts. It is not employed for some pleasure before the day is spent,or to relieve the uneasiness of our leisure. It shapes and builds up the soul, it gives order to life, guides action, shows what should and shouldn’t be done….Without it no one can live without fear or  free from care.” [Moral Letters ]

Seneca too met a tragic end. He fell out of favour with his emperor Nero who ordered him to commit suicide!

Seneca calmly did. He was a true Stoic.

Today the word philosopher has lost its original meaning. Philosophy has become a mere academic discipline, and anyone who studies or teaches, or merely professes, is a philosopher!

Philosophy in modern states

We do not have philosophers or real statesmen steering the affairs of the State. We do not have politicians with any aim loftier than attainment of power. Leaders, in the real sense, like Vaclav Havel are rare for the modern age. Even in so called developed countries the popular vote does not necessarily favour the learned person.

 Havel stood for anti-consumerism, environmentalism, humanitarianism, direct democracy. However he did not always enjoy the support of all sections, and could not prevent the split of Czechoslovakia on ethnic lines. It is not easy to practise philosophy in the modern State. 

Philosophies do reign – in name!

Even so, modern governments cannot be said to be lacking in ‘philosophy’ of some sort, entirely. Most politicians declare their allegiance to some aims or ideals like communism, socialism, market economy, welfare state, democracy, liberalism, secularism, humanism, etc.  

People conscious of environmental concerns even promote the Green Party, which is an anti-consumerist philosophy. These are all philosophies in their own right. Incidentally, almost all of them focus on the economy! They are really not ‘philosophy’ in the sense meant by Plato.

In practice, most politicians professing them merely reduce them to convenient labels or slogans to cover their quest for power and office, and hide their sins there. Almost no one practices what he says his philosophy is. No leader professing socialism has so far distributed his wealth among the poor!  History tells us what crimes were committed in the name of communism in the former USSR and China, under Lenin, Stalin, Mao. Every modern dictator rode to power on some philosophy. Here in India every politician praises Gandhi or take his name when it suits him.  It will be interesting to compile the list of ideals or philosophies professed by politicians and what exactly was done in their name when they came to power!

Even in truly democratic societies, it is not possible to govern without compromise. It is difficult to reduce philosophy to a program of action. It is easy to talk of welfare, but what would be your priority ? Would prohibition qualify as a welfare measure? Educated societies are divided on every issue. Scientists can be hired to support any side of an issue.

Philosophy for the public

Philosophy is really going into the nature and origin of things. We use the word in an entirely different sense in popular discourse today. Any strong or habitual belief in anything which influences our conduct  is called a philosophy. We not only have a philosophy of life, but a philosophy of anything, practically!

How do we come by our philosophy? Not by learning, for sure. It is our life’s experiences, bit and small, that induce in us a doubt or uncertainty or sow the seed of some belief. We have happy childhood, good schooling and education, and a job- we believe life is good. Any problem anywhere, we come to believe life is uncertain, unpredictable. Those who are poor, struggle in life will surely believe that life is unjust, a punishment. There are those who believe that improvement is possible by human effort. All these are philosophies, though we don’t stick that label: optimism, pessimism, meliorism.

Who is Seneca?
Lucius Annaeus Seneca (4 BCE-65 CE) was a Roman stoic playwright, author of essays and nine tragedies. He was tutor to the future emperor Nero but lost favour after Nero’s accession to the throne, he lost his support and was ordered to commit suicide. His tragedies were accepted as classical models by 16th century dramatists.

Who is Valluvar?
The greatest of the ancient Tamil poets. He was the author of Tirukkural, an ethical work with 1330 couplets dealing with 133 topics. His aphorisms are famous for its brevity and clarity.


There are number of similarities between Valluvar and Seneca. Let us look at few couplets:
Tiru valluvar says in the chapter on the Importance of Virtue,

To be of pure, spotless mind is real virtue; all else is of no avail- Kural 34

He says a blemish less mind is the basis of all virtues. Every thing else is an empty show.
Seneca agrees with him ,
‘Between good men and the gods there exists a good friendship brought about by virtue (arising from a pure mind)’.– Seneca on Providence



Under the chapter on Forbearance or Patience, Valluvar said,

‘Overcome by forbearance those that harm thee by this overbearing act’– 158

Another translation of the same couplet is

‘Pride leads a man to do wrong; but this could be overcome
By the greater pride of one’s own forbearance.

Seneca also says,
Unkindness must be treated with kindness.

This, we find, in Dhammapada of Buddha and Mahabharata of Vyasa.
Almost all Hindu saints said this.



If you would protect yourself, guard against your own anger.
For anger, not controlled would lead to self- destruction–305

Seneca’s words fully agree with Valluvar,
‘Anger leads to self- destruction’.



We find in Valluvar’s Kural,
Refraining from doing harm in retaliation of harm done with animosity is the rule of conduct of the noble hearted- Kural 312
This is also said by all the great saints
Seneca said,
‘For the wise and the great injuries don’t exist.’

Once again we are reminded ‘Great men think alike’.
