I want to place it on record the amazing statistics about Athi Varadar with the hope of someone reding it after forty years, i.e.2059!

Who is Athi Varadar?

Mahavishnu in Varadaraja Swami Temple in Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu.

What is the meaning of   Athi Varadar?

Athi is a wood mentioned in Vishnu Sahasranama as Udumbara along with two other trees. All the three trees belong to Ficus genus. Athi is Ficus Udumbra or Ficus racemose. Varadar is one who showers boons on devotees.

Why is God Vishnu known as Athi Varadar?

Because the original statue was made of Athi wood and placed in a water- tight silver casket under the temple tank. Instead of this a granite statue is worshiped on daily basis.

What is the significance of the wooden statue?

It was made by Lord Brahma and so considered very valuable. If it is anointed every day with all the usual Abishek/ bathing materials it will be damaged. So it is immersed in the tank and taken out once in forty years. Last time it was taken out in 1979.

What is the Forty Year wonder?

When it is taken out of the tank a great number of devotees gather to have the darshan (viewing). This time it was taken out in July/August and kept out for darshan for 48 days.

Few people reported that they are seeing it for the third time in their life!

What happened during 48 days?

During the 48 days in July/August 2019, over ten million people had the viewing of Lord in lying position and standing position.

Over ten million people contributed over Rs 9.9 crores during this period. Out of the 18 hundis (money box), 13 were open and 164 grams of gold, 4959 grams of silver, cash of nearly 100 million rupees were found.

Millions of people had free food. Rs.1-5 crore donation was received for Anna danam alone.

From President of India to a poor beggar in the street every one had the blessing of God.

What is the condition of the statue when it is taken out?

It was in good condition and applied with herbal oils.

On the re immersion day (178-2019,) 48 types of Prasadams were made and offered to the Lord.

How big is the statue?

12 feet tall and two and half feet wide.

Any more wonder?

The statue that is placed in the Vasanta Mandapam will be immersed on the 48th day. The tank dried for cleaning and other purposes will be automatically filled in by the rain. This time also the city and its suburbs had heavy rains.

When is the next darshan?

It will be in year 2059.

If we are all lucky we will have the Darshan!

I am attaching some paper cuttings for future generations.

One more wonder!

There re over 350 inscriptions in the temple. They are from

Chozas,Pandyas, Telugu chodas,

Pallava /Kadavarayas,Chera ,Kakatiya,

Sambuvaraya,Hoysala,Vijayanagara,

and devotees. 16 inscriptions are from the great ruler Krishnadevaraya (1510-528). Two of the inscriptions give a complete list of his conquests.

The Kalyana Mandapam alone has 800 bas reliefs depicting  various puranic themes. Wood carvings and paintings are also found in the temple.

East London came to vibrant life this Sunday morning (25-08-2019) because of the chariot procession of Goddess Mahalakshmi, Vishnu and Lord Ganesh. Of the 27 Tamil temples in and around London, two East London temples are run with Indian priests.

Not many people get up early in London on Sunday mornings. But  East London appeared like Mini India this morning with jasmine fragrance and colourful scenes. All the shops were decorated with festive festoons and flowers. In front of each shop and most of the houses were coconut, bananas, flowers with lighted Kuthuvilakku (traditional Hindu lamp). The two chariots stopped at each place and took nearly three hours to reach the destination.

The added attractions were Kerala drums and Indian Pipes and Tamil drums. Following the tradition devotees offered coconut and fruits in all the places.

To avoid the evil eye or part of a vow, people used to break  coconuts  on the roads. In one place a mat was spread and scores of coconuts were broken on the road. Lot of people took pictures. East London became a refugee camp after Second World War with the influx of Jewish refugees. Then came the Sikhs, Sri Lankan Tamils and Pakistanis. Now it has people of all ethnicities.

Free Coffee, Free Rose Milk, Free Sundal

Saravana Bhavan, the most famous vegetarian restaurant in the world, offered coffee, tea, Sundal (boiled Chick peas with added spices) and sweet pudding. Everything free. This is the first time I see free coffee and tea. Lyca mobile offered buttery Neer Mor (butter milk) and Sundal. Others gave Rose milk and bottled drinks free. Nowadays even before the full lunch meal (Maha Prasad), people get all types of snacks for breakfast.

As usual women came in colourful silk sarees and men came in silk dhotis in the tadeonal way. I went with the procession for an hour or so but did not stay for the tasty MAHA Prasad.

Two more Hindu temples did Rath Yatra today and unfortunately no one could cover all the three because they are miles apart.

Please see the attached pictures taken by me–

STORY OF GOLDEN BOWL IN LALITA VISTARA AND BOROBUDUR (Post No.6882)

An interesting story of golden bowl given to Buddha has been described in 1800 year old Sanskrit book called Lalita Vistara and  1000 year old sculptures of Borobudur in Indonesia.

Sujata was the daughter of the village headman of Uruvilva. After a long fast of Buddha, se gave him milk rice in a golden bowl. But before eating it he went to the river of Nagas known as Nairanjana to refresh himself. After his bath he wanted to sit down on the banks of the river. Naga daughter who inhabits the river brought him a jewelled throne.  Seated on the throne Buddha took his milk rice. After having the food he threw the golden bowl into the river.

Sagara, the Naga King,    seized it at once and waned to carry it to his abode. At the same time Indra assuming the shape of Garuda (eagle) and holding his Vajra weapon in his beak tried to rob the priceless treasure from the Naga chief. When Indra realised, he was too powerful for him to beat, he took his original fomr and begged for the bowl. When Indra received it, he took it to the Heaven and instituted an annual ‘Festival of the Bowl’. The author of Lalita Vistara says it is still celebrated.

(Today we don’t know anything about it. So it may be one of the lost festivals of ancient India)

It was so popular till Borobudur period and in panels 85 to 89 of Lalita Vistara sculptures we see them even today. The popular story went up to Indonesia. 120 panels describe the anecdotes in Buddha’s life as detailed in Lalita Vistara.

Following are the details found in the sculptures of five panels:

Buddha in his previous Bodhisatva form, receives the golden bowl from Sujata in his right hand.

Four divine personages kneel before him. Celestial Rishis shower on him divine flowers and ornaments.

Then a Naga maid offers him the jewelled throne. Another three Naga females kneel before Buddha

Buddha seated cross legged on the throne took the food.

Another panel shows buddha’s empty right hand . Then a hooded Naga receive the bowl and then give it to Indra. Another peculiar figure with the head dress in the shape of an elephant trunk is found near the royal personage. Scholars think that it is Airavata in the shape of a human being.

Airavata is the elephant Vahana of Indra.

Such a detailed and popular story has disappeared from India with its Bowl festival!

(The elephant headed dress is found in North West India and Pallava History as well)

LONDON SAW A VERY STRANGE SCENE TODAY (11-08-2019). SRI LANKAN HINDU DEVOTEES ROLLED ON THE ROADS TO FULFILL THEIR VOWS, AS PART OF RATH YATRA.

Kanaga Durga Temple in Ealing, London, celebrated its Annual Chariot festival also known as Car Festival and Rath Yatra. Ealing in London became another Jaffna (Sri Lanka) today. Sri Lankan Hindus showed that they are  second to none in following Hindu rituals. I have seen many Rath Yatras in London and Tamil Nadu (India). But today’s one was unique.

The unusual scene today was the rolling of scores of Hindu Tamil devotees on the ground, literally on the roads. Hindus take vow and do several strange rites to fulfil their vows. Fire Walking, Carrying Fire Pots in hands or heads, Carrying Milk Pots or Pots with young /germinating plants on their heads, rolling on the left over food leaves/plates and rolling on the ground etc.

The meaning behind all these rituals is thanks giving to the god for fulfilling their wishes. Several people do it with newer demands as well; “Lt me get married soon; let me get a good wife or husband, let me pass in the exams, let my troubles be over, let me get a child, let me get good health or wealth” are some appeals. Several mothers do it for their children. That is why Manu and other Law makers made Mother superior to God in Hinduism.

Today I saw scores of people rolling on the hot, rough roads following the Ratha/ chariot of Goddess Durga. Kanaga Durga (Golden Goddess of Protection) is a famous temple in London. Every year the Rath Yatra is held.

Hindus believe that the dust of the devotees is more powerful in healing than the Prasad of Gods. So they roll on the ground where the Bhaktas/devotees and Gods walked. That is why they came at the far end of the procession.

The whole of Jaffna descended upon Ealing area of London this morning giving colourful scenes. Hundreds of young volunteers led the procession peacefully for four hours. Several thousands attended and had free food. They waited patiently with  young children with smiling faces to get the Darshan (viewing of the Goddess) and the Maha Prasad (sumptuous food).

Another beautiful scene is the Kavadi Dance (Kanwaria in North India). They take the semi circular, decorated wooden arch on their shoulders and dance and chant the names of Gods. Kavadi carriers put hooks behind their backs or insert sharp spade shaped Vel in their mouths to show their intensity of devotion; another interpretation is that by punishing themselves like this they atone for their sins.

Hundreds of women carried the Milk Pots on their heads. These are the things that give them great mental strength. These serve as shock absorbers and tackle all sorts of family problems.

Sri Lankan mothers brought their children in large numbers. It is not only fun for the children but also memorable events in their life. Todays’ mothers and fathers were trained on the job (of understanding Hinduism) by their parents in the same way.

Hinduism is unique in the world with hundreds of colourful rituals and foods. The more they celebrate such festivals the more faith they get. Their faith gets more deep rooted.

In addition to Rolling men, Milk Pots, Fire Pots, Kavadis there were music troupes playing on traditional pipes and drums. Three Rathas/ chariots took nearly four hours to reach the destination and people walked all through the route. They broke thousands of coconuts and offered them to Goddess Durga along the route.

I have taken scores of pictures- please see the attached pictures.

Dr South, when preaching before Charles II, observed that the monarch and his attendants began to nod. And some of them soon after snored. On this he broke off his sermon and said,
Lord Lauderdale, let me entreat you to rouse yourself; you snore so loud, that you will awake the king.

Three Kinds of Pride!

My brethren, said the satirical Dean Swift in a sermon, there are three kinds of pride—
of  birth, of riches and of talent. I shall not speak of the latter, none of you being liable to that abominable vice.
Xxx

Sermon and Deer Hunt

A somewhat self -satisfied and greatly inexperienced young preacher one Sunday supplied the pulpit of a country church. After services he asked one of the church fathers what he thought of his sermon.

“Now I tell you, said the old man ,
I will put it in a sort of parable . I recollect Archie Tucker’s first deer hunt. He was kind of green. He followed the deer alright, but he followed it all day in the wrong direction”.

Xxx

Drowning in Water!!

A prominent bishop tells of the Sunday morning when he was approached after the service by an old lady, who said in a tone of appreciation,
“Bishop, you will never know what your service meant to me. It was just like water to a drowning man!”

Xxx

Ten Minutes Sermon is Enough!!

A certain minister recounted a harrowing experience which befell him during one of his sermons. Just as he was beginning his address, an elderly lady of stern mien marched down and seated herself directly beneath him in front of the pulpit. She opened up a little kit, assembled the various parts of a rather elaborate hearing mechanism and affixed it her ears. After not more than ten minutes of his discourse, she suddenly took off the ear pieces, unscrewed the mechanism and packed it neatly away in its little box and sat with her hands in her lap throughout the rest of the sermon.

Xxx

Charles Lamb and Coleridge!

“I believe, you have never heard me preach, Charles”, said Coleridge, referring to the days of his Unitarian ministry.
“Yes, retorted Lamb, I …I … never heard you do anything else”.

Garrick said he would give a hundred Guineas if he could say
“Oh!” as well as the Rev. Whitefield
