Nature
calls! Parrot back home after hearing brother’s squawks on mobile
AN ESCAPED baby parrot called Sausage Rowles was coaxed to
safety by a mobile phone recording of her twin brother.
Michelle
Chubb was devastated when Sausage flew out the door and went missing in the
wild.
Her
family launched a huge hunt but after two freezing nights there was still no
sign of the bird.
As
hopes faded, Michelle recorded the squawks of six-month-old Sausage’s twin
Chico, who is owned by a family friend.
Then
she took her phone to nearby woodland on Vire Island in Devon.
(Totnes is a market town and civil parish at the head of the
estuary of the River Dart in Devon, England within the South Devon Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is about 21 miles south-southwest of Exeter and
is the administrative centre of the South Hams District Council)
Sausage,
an Amazon Maximillian, responded and she was spotted being guarded by a pigeon.
Michelle,
32, said: ‘She started shouting out and the pigeon flew over to show us where
she was. I got her and wrapped her in my jacket and we legged it home.’
Describing
her relief, Michelle said: ‘We don’t know how she lasted. She is one of the
family. You cannot realise how happy we are to have found her. She comes into
the bedroom for cups of tea and flies up to say good night to my daughters.’
Sausage,
named in honour of Michelle’s partner, Adam Rowles, is back home in Totnes with
the couple and their children, August, six, Lexi, 11 and Zach, 14.

Fluorine is one of the 118 known elements. It belongs to the
Halogen group.
Fluorine is useful to us in the following ways:-
Tooth paste to strengthen the tooth enamel
Non sticky Teflon pans
P E T – Positron Emission Tomography in health checks
Landing on Moon and other Space Explorations
Important Medicines
First let us look at some interesting tit bits:-
Contrary to popular belief, it was not space exploration that
led to the development of the non -stick frying pan, but the other way round.
The non- stick frying pan relies on Teflon, the polymer Tetrafluoroethene. That
was discovered by Roy Plunkett at the Du Pont research laboratory in New
Jersey, U S A, in 1938.

One morning he opened a cylinder of tetrafluoroethene which was supposed to hold 1000 grams of the gas but only 990 grams came out. The missing ten grams had turned into a curious white powder which was a plastic with remarkable properties. It would not dissolve in anything, was not affected by heat, wouldn’t burn and was not attacked by hot corrosive acids. More unusual was its ability to flexible down to minus 240 Degree C. It was this property which made it so important for use in space and on moon where such temperatures prevail.
Later Louis Hartman found a way to use this on aluminium pans in 1950s. The French company Tefal, marketed the first non -stick frying pans ten years before man set foot on the Moon. Nobel Prize Georgius Agricola described the use of fluorspar, calcium fluoride, in 1529. But it was Henri Moissan who extracted fluorine and got Nobel prize for chemistry in 1906. Fluorine was named meaning ‘to flow’.

Useful to humans
In humans, most of the fluoride accumulates in the bones and
teeth. It strengthens both, converting the calcium phosphate of which they are
made into fluorapatite, a harder material. This in tooth enamel, can better
resist the corrosive effect of acids produced by oral bacteria acting on sugar
for this reason it is added to water supplies and tooth pastes.
Cockroach killer
Fluorine is poisonous. But humans need it in minute quantities.
Laboratory animals without fluorine in diet became anaemic and infertile.
Because of its toxic effects, it is used in insecticide to kill cockroaches and

47 people died
At a hospital in the USA in 1943, patients were served
scrambled eggs to which sodium fluoride had been added instead of normal salt
sodium chloride. 163 people became sick and 47 of them died.
Punjab Problem
If too much fluorine is taken, fluorosis disease comes. It
results in mottled teeth and deformed skeletons. In Punjab, people drink water
with high levels of fluoride and millions of people are affected by this.
Fluoride comes to us from foods such as potatoes, butter,
cheese, sea fish, pork and chicken.
Fluorine is produced in China, Mexico and west Europe.
PET
Fluorine has an effect on enzymes, effectively blocking their
activity. This is useful in certain experiments and treatments.
The isotope fluorine 18 is used in medical diagnosis through
the technique known as P E T , positron emission tomography. The half- life of
the isotope is only 110 minutes. It can go into places in our body which other
substances can’t do. This helps us to study the internal organs.
Twenty percent of important medicines are made with fluorine
compounds and the pharmaceutical companies make big money with it.

வேண்டுமென்ற பாடத் திட்டம் திணிக்கப்பட்டிருப்பது எவ்வளவு மஹா மோசமான ஒன்று என்பதைச்
சிந்திக்க வேண்டும்!
1640ஆம் ஆண்டு
ஷாஜஹானால் முகலாய சேனை ஒன்று கார்வாலைத் தாக்குவதற்காக அனுப்பப்பட்டத; இது தோல்வியில்
முடிந்தது. ராணி கர்ணாவதி மிக மோசமான தோல்வியை
அந்த சேனைக்கு வழங்கினார். அத்துடன் மட்டுமல்ல, உயிருடன் இருந்த முகலாய வீரர்களின்
மூக்கையும் வெட்டினார்; அதனால் அவர் ‘நாக் காடி ராணி’ – மூக்கை அறுத்த ராணி என்ற பெயரையும்
பெற்றார். அவரது கொடூரமான இரக்கமற்ற செய்கை முகலாயர்களை அச்சுறுத்தியதால் அவர்களால்
ஒருபொழுதும் கார்வாலை வெல்ல முடியவில்லை.
அதே போல அக்பரின் சமகாலத்தில் வாழ்ந்த ராணி பாவசங்கரி ஒவ்வொரு குடும்பத்திலிருந்து ஒரு வீரர் சேனையில் சேர்வதைக் கட்டாயமாக்கினார். வங்கத்தில் இருந்த பூரிஷ்ரேஷ்டாவை அவர் ஆண்டு வந்தார். எல்லையில் தனது சேனையை அவர் நிறுத்தி வைத்தார்; சேனையை நன்கு பராமரித்தார். பதான் சுல்தானை மூன்று முறை அவர் தோற்கடித்தார். அக்பர் கூட அவரது அரசுரிமையில் மூக்கை நுழைக்கவில்லை!
இஸ்லாமிய
அரசர்களைத் தோற்கடித்தபின் ஒரிஸ்ஸாவை சேர்ந்த நரசிம்ஹதேவன் கோனார்க் ஆலயத்தைக் கட்டினார்.
சுல்தான் தன்னைத் தாக்கும் முன்னரே அவர் வங்காள சுல்தானை முதலில் தாக்கினார். போரில்
இஸ்லாமிய ஆக்கிரமிப்பாளர்கள் செய்த அதே தந்திரத்தை செய்து அவர் வெற்றி பெற்றார். அது
நடந்த ஆண்டு – கி.பி.1248 ஆம் ஆண்டு.
தென்னிந்தியாவைச்
சேர்ந்த முசுன்றி நாயக்கரான கபய நாயகர் வாரங்கல்லிலிருந்து (அப்போதைய தெலிங்கானா) துக்ளக்கை
1336ஆம் ஆண்டு விரட்டியடித்தார்.ஹிந்து மேலாதிக்கத்தை மீண்டும் ஸ்தாபித்தார். அவர்
இதை தனது கீழ் இருந்த 75 நாயக்கர்களின் உதவியுடன் செய்ய முடிந்தது. பொது எதிரியான அன்னியன் முன் அனைவரும் ஒருங்கிணைந்ததற்கு
இது ஒரு சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டு. இஸ்லாமிய ஆக்கிரமிப்பாளர்களிடமிருந்து தங்கள் ராஜ்யங்களைத்
திரும்பப் பெறவும் அவர் தென்னிந்திய அரசுகளுக்கு உதவினார்.

Mughal
army sent by Shah Jahan in 1640 to attack Garhwal
failed in the expedition. Rani Karnavati badly defeated
them. She also cut the noses of the surviving Mughal
soldiers due to which she was called Naak Kati Rani. Her cruel and merciless
stance frightened the Mughals and they could never win Garhwal.
Likewise,
Rani Bhavashankari, Akbar’s contemporary, made it
compulsory to recruit a soldier from every family.
She was the ruler of Bhurishhrestha of Bengal. She stationed forces at the
border and well maintained her army. She
defeated the Pathan Sultan thrice. Even Akbar did
not interfere in her sovereignty.
Narasimhadeva
from Orissa built the Konark temple after his victory against Islamic rulers. He attacked the Bengal Sultanate’s territories before the Sultan
could attack him. During battle, he played one tactic played by the Islamic
invaders and he won. It was 1248 AD.
Kapaya
Nayaka, a Musunri Nayaka, in the South drove the Tughlaqs out of the Warrangal
(then Telangana) territory in 1336 and re-established Hindu supremacy. He could do this with the help of 75 subordinate Nayakas; another
best example of unity against a common foreign enemy. He also helped other
South Indian kingdoms regain back their kingdoms from the Islamic invaders.
