The lovers’ ring lost in a field 500 years ago
A MEDIEVAL gold ring discovered in a field is likely to have been a 15th century love token, an expert says.
The band, found by a detectorist in York in 2016 and now on display at the Yorkshire Museum, is thought to have been owned by gentry or those ‘associated with royalty’ because it is set with a ruby and an emerald.
Adam Parker, of the Yorkshire Museum Trust, which bought the ring for £20,000, said emeralds were linked with chastity and rubies with love so it could have been ‘a betrothal charm’.
He said the ‘exotic’ ring, which was buried for 500 years, may have been dropped, or stolen and hidden.
It was likely to have had its origin in the Middle East or North Africa.
But experts, while describing the gold ring set with ruby and emerald as an ‘incredible treasure’, say its provenance cannot be proved.
Mr Ibbotson, 52, from Blackpool, found it in a field at Fulford, near York, in December 2016. It was officially declared treasure and he and the landowner received £10,000 each. Now, after more than two years of research, Mr Ibbotson believes it could be the ring on the index finger of Anne of Cleves in Hans Holbein’s 1539 portrait.

24)சுதர்சனாஷ்டகம்
8 + பலஸ்துதி, ஆக 9 சம்ஸ்கிருத ஸ்லோகங்கள் அடங்கிய சுதர்சனாஷ்டகம் மிகவும் பிரசித்தமான ஒன்று. விஷ்ணுவின் சுதர்சன சக்ரத்தை நோக்கி செய்யப்படும் துதிகள் இவை. விஷ்ணுவின் மிகச் சக்தி வாய்ந்த ஆயுதங்களில் முதலாவதானது சுதர்சனம். சில ஆலயங்களில் சுதர்சனருக்குத் தனி சந்நிதி உண்டு. திருமோகூரில் குறிப்பிடத்தகுந்த சுதர்சன சந்நிதி உள்ளது.
பாஞ்சராத்ர ஆகமத்தின் பழைய சம்ஹிதையான அஹிர்புத்ன்ய சம்ஹிதையில் சுதர்சனத்தின் பெருமை பல அத்தியாயங்களில் விளக்கப்படுகிறது.
கவிதை ஜாலங்களுடன் சக்தி வாய்ந்த வார்த்தைகள் மூலம் தேசிகர் இந்த அஷ்டகத்தில் சுதர்சனரைப் போற்றுகிறார்.
திருப்புட்குழியில் வாழ்ந்து வந்தோரின் கொடிய ஜுரம் போக இந்த அஷ்டகத்தை தேசிகர் இயற்றியதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது. இன்னொரு சாரார் தேசிகர் வாதுக்குச் செல்லு முன் இதை இயற்றி வாதுக்குச் சென்றதாகவும் மற்ற தத்துவங்களை முன்வைத்தோர் தோற்று விட்டதாகவும் கூறுகின்றனர்.
இதில் உள்ள எட்டு ஸ்லோகங்களை அர்த்தத்துடன் மனதில் ஊன்றிப் படிப்பவர்களின் ஆசைகள் நிறைவேறும் என்று உறுதி கூறுகிறார் ஒன்பதாவது ஸ்லோகத்தில், ஸ்ரீவேதாந்த தேசிகர்.
25)ஷோடசாயுத ஸ்தோத்ரம்
19 சம்ஸ்கிருத ஸ்லோகங்கள் அடங்கியது ஷோடசாயுத ஸ்தோத்ரம். ஒரு சமயம் திருப்புட்குழியில் வாழ்ந்தோர் கொடிய ஜுரம் ஒன்றினால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு வருந்த, அப்போது தேசிகர் இதை இயற்றி அவர்களின் ஜுரத்தைப் போக்கடித்ததாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது.
சுதர்சனருக்கு ஆயுதேஸ்வரன் – ஆயுதங்களின் ஈஸ்வரன் – என்று பெயர். 16 ஆயுதங்களைத் தன் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் வைத்திருக்கும் சுதர்சனர் இடது கையில் எட்டையும் வலது கையில் எட்டையும் வைத்திருக்கிறார். மிக முக்கியமான சுதர்சன சக்கரத்தை அவர் தன் கையில் வைத்திருக்கிறார்.
18வது ஸ்லோகத்தில் தேசிகர் இந்த 16 ஆயுதங்களுடன் சுதர்சனர் இந்த உலகத்தைக் காத்து வருவதாகக் குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.
19வது ஸ்லோகத்தில் 16 ஆயுதங்களையும் போற்றித் துதிக்கும் இந்த ஸ்லோகங்களை யார் ஒருவர் சொல்கிறாரோ அவருக்கு நலமும் வளமும் கூடும் என்கிறார்.
26)ஸ்ரீ கருட தண்டக:
4 + 3 ஆக 7 சம்ஸ்கிருத ஸ்லோகங்கள் அடங்கியது ஸ்ரீ கருட தண்டகம்.
விஷ்ணுவின் வாகனம் கருடன். நித்யசூரிகளில் ஒருவரான கருடர் வேதத்தில் புகழப்படுபவர். அவருக்கு ருத்ரா மற்றும் சுகிர்தி என இரு மனைவிகள் உண்டு. விஷ்ணுவின் வியூக தோற்றங்களில் அவர் சங்கர்ஷண அம்சமாக கருதப்படுகிறார்.
ஒரு சமயம் சர்வதந்த்ர சுதந்த்ர பட்டம் கொண்ட வேதாந்த தேசிகரை பாம்பாட்டி ஒருவன் சவாலுக்கு அழைத்தான். தன்னால் கட்டவிழ்த்தப்படும் பாம்பை அவரால் அடக்க முடியுமா என்று கேட்டான்.
உடனடியாக தேசிகர் கருட மந்திரத்தை உச்சரிக்க பாம்பு கட்டுண்டது. உடனடியாக ஒரு கருடன் வந்து அதைக் கொத்திக் கொண்டு போனது. இதைக் கண்டு திடுக்கிட்டு வியந்த பாம்பாட்டி தேசிகரிடம் மன்னித்து அருளுமாறும் அது ஒன்று தான் தன் பிழைப்புக்கான சாதனம் என்றும் வேண்ட தேசிகர் இரக்கம் கொண்டு இந்த தண்டகத்தைப் பாட கருடன் திரும்பி வந்து பாம்பைக் கீழே போட்டது.
இதில் உள்ள சந்தச் சிறப்பை சம்ஸ்கிருத ஆர்வலர்கள் வெகுவாகப் போற்றுவர்.
27)ஸ்ரீ கருட பஞ்சாஷத்
52 சம்ஸ்கிருத ஸ்லோகங்கள் அடங்கியது ஸ்ரீ கருட பஞ்சாஷத்.
கருடரை தியானித்த தேசிகருக்கு கருடன் தரிசனம் தந்து ஹயக்ரீவ மந்திரத்தை உபதேசித்தார்.
வர்ணகா என்று கூறப்படும் ஐந்து பகுதிகள் கொண்ட இது, கருட மந்திரத்தின் ஐந்து அக்ஷரங்களைச் சுட்டிக் காட்டுகிறது.
முதல் பகுதி பர வ்யூஹ வர்ணகம். இரண்டாவது பகுதி அம்ருதாஹரண வர்ணகம். மூன்றாவது பகுதி நாகதமன வர்ணகம். நான்காவது பகுதி பரிஷ்கார வர்ணகம். ஐந்தாவது பகுதி அத்புத வர்ணகம்.
கருடர் விஷ்ணுவுக்கு பல அம்சங்களில் சமமானவர் எனக் கூறும் தேசிகர் தனது இறுதி ஸ்லோகத்தில் பாம்பினால் ஏற்படும் உடல் மற்றும் மனோ பாதிப்புகள், வியாதிகள்,விதியின் தீய விளைவுகள் அனைத்தும் இந்த ஸ்லோகங்களைப் படிப்பதால் போய் விடும் என்று கூறி அருள்கிறார்.
28)ஸ்ரீ யதிராஜ சப்ததி
74 சம்ஸ்கிருத ஸ்லோகங்கள் அடங்கியது ஸ்ரீ யதிராஜ சப்ததி. ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜரைப் போற்றித் துதிப்பவை இந்த ஸ்லோகங்கள். தயா சதகம் போலவே வெவ்வேறு சந்தங்களில் அமைந்திருக்கிறது இந்த சப்ததி. இதில் அனைத்து ஆசாரியர்களையும் குறிப்பிடுகிறார் தேசிகர். விஷ்ணுவில் ஆரம்பித்து பெரிய நம்பியில் முடிக்கிறார்.
முராரியின் பஞ்ச ஆயுதங்கள் ஓருரு எடுத்து ராமானுஜராக அவதரித்ததாக தேசிகர் 12ஆம் ஸ்லோகத்தில் கூறுகிறார்.
இதைப் படிப்பவர்கள் உள்ளங்கை நெல்லிக்கனியென – கரதல ஆமலகம் போல – தர்ம வழியைக் காண்பர் என்றும், அவர்களது அறிவு சார்ந்த வார்த்தைகள் ஏனையோருக்கு பகல் நேர நக்ஷத்திரம் போலத் திகழுமென்றும் தேசிகர் 74வது ஸ்லோகத்தில் கூறுகிறார்.

Devotees of Lord Vishnu celebrated Vaikunda Ekadasi on 6th January 2020. Every year a famous Shiva Festival follows Vaikunda Ekadasi. It is known as Aardra Festival. Temples all over South India celebrate both these festivals in a grand manner.
What is Aardra?
Aardra or Aarudra or Thiruvaathirai (in Tamil) is a star in the 27 star system in Hindu astronomy. It is part of the Orion Constellation in the Northern sky. The name of this star is Betelgeuse . tamilandvedas.com, swamiindology.blogspot.com
Aardra in Sanskrit means WET. This star is associated with Lord Shiva. It is customary for the Hindus to keep the statues of Shiva always wet. So in every temple, there is a Shiva Linga on which there is a vessel with a very small hole. Milk or water will always be dripping on the head of Lord Shiva. Hindus know the famous saying,
VISHNU IS ALANKARA PRIYA
SHIVA IS ABISHEKA PRIYA
Vishnu idols are decorated beautifully with the finest jewellery and clothes.
Shiva idols are always bathed with water, milk or honey.
Alankara means decorating with ornaments and clothing.
Abhisheka means ritual bathing.
Kanchi Shankaracharya Swamiji (1894-1994) explains it beautifully,
“Lord Isvara (Shiva) in his manifestation as Dancing Nataraja , gives his darshan in the early morning of the day on which the confluence of full moon (Purnima) and the star Aardra occurs. This revelation of the Lord is known as Aardra Darsanam. The combination of Aardra and the full moon occurs once a year, in the month of Maargazi (Maargasiirsha in Sanskrit) corresponding to December-January. The meaning of the Sanskrit word Aardra is wet or dripping. In the context of Aardra Darsan, aardra signifies wet with COMPASSION or ‘nanaintha manasu’ in Tamil. This is the period of the year when Nature, which is nothing else than a manifestation of God, puts on a wet cloak of dew. What a wonderful combination is the cool soothing rays of the full moon and the dripping dew that envelops the earth! On such an auspicious day we should also perform abisheka with a heart overflowing with compassion towards our fellow beings and earn His blessings.”

Kanchipuram – Prithvi / earth.
Of these five temples, Chidambaram is the place where God is worshipped formless and so Hindus consider it as the most sacred place. Near the vacuum hall which is curtained, there is the most famous Dancing form of Lord Shiva known as Nataraja illustrating the cosmic principle. This explains all that is discovered so far in science from nuclear science to Black holes.
What do Hindus do on Aardra festival day?
In all the South Indian temples Abhisheka (ritual bathing of Shiva with water, milk, honey, coconut water, curd/yoghurt ,ghee, sandal paste, pomegranate juice, fruit salad/Panchamrita, cooked food , holy ash etc. Hindus flock to the Shiva temples in thousands and thousands. Many Shiva temples have ten day long festivals with Chariot Procession/ Rath Yatra during this season.
This ceremony commences at about midnight and lasts till late in the morning. When the bathing is over the image is choicely decorated with costly jewels donated by the kings and devotees. Pandit Natesa Sastri adds in his book Hindu Feasts (year 1903) ,
“In Chidambaram the procession of Nataraja takes place in the evening. This is the most impressive scene of the Aardra festival and the Ananda Tandavam – the dance in ecstatic joy – takes place on the occasion. The bearers of the image have a mode of marching slowly, so as to give the image the appearance of dancing. Shiva temples in Tiruvarur, Lalgudi, Perur, Madurai, Tirunelvely, Kanchipuram also celebrate it with lots of devotees visiting the temple.
Great Saiva philosopher Manikkavasagar spent his last days in Chidambaram and a small festival to honour the philosopher takes place in this (Chidambaram) temple . Manikkavasagar festival is celebrated in Tirupperundurai, Thiruvathavur and Madurai as well.
In Kerala
Malayalees celebrate Thiru Aathirai (Aardra) with dance and music. The women wear traditional dress and dance in circles with Ardra songs in Malayalam.
Saivite Hindus all over Tamil Nadu prepare special Sweet Pudding today called Kali with a special side dish (Kuuttu).
Two festivals with special Titles
Word Thiru is a honorific title in Tamil. This is a cognate word with Sri and SIR title in English.
T becomes S and S becomes T in many world languages. Thus we equate SRI=THIRU=SIR

He says that Tamils and Malayalees have rightly added the honorific Thiru with only two stars in the 27 star system.

Both these are celebrated grandly in Vishnu and Shiva temples. One for Vishnu and one for Shiva showing both are one. More over they are spaced in a way to cover the whole year.

Kanchi Pramacharya (1894- 1994) concludes beautifully one of his discourses on Ardra festival thus,
“Many people come to me every day and pour into my ears heart rending tales of their sorrows and afflictions. What solace can I offer to them except to tell them that their heart aches from dukkha and taapa will be assuaged if they perform abisheka to Parameswara with faith and devotion, doing daily puja to Him. வடக்கு மாசி வீதியிலுள்ள எங்கள் வீட்டு முதல் அறைக்கு பகுத்தறிவுப் பாசறை என்று பெயர். எப்போதும் ஒரு அரட்டைக் கச்சேரி கும்பல் இருக்கும். பகல் நேரமானால் எல்லோருக்கும் ‘ஓசி’க் காப்பியும் கொடுப்போம்.

UFO sightings and reports peaked last week when a mysterious chain of moving lights cut across the night skies over parts of the UK, prompting some to speculate aliens had finally visited Earth.

The UFOs or unidentified flying objects were seen over Wales and England earlier last week. Eyewitness accounts shared on social media reported a train of bright lights moving across the starlit sky.

RANI MANGAMMAL RULED MADURAI NAYAK KINGDOM FOR FIFTEEN YEARS FROM 1689 T0 1704. SHE WAS A COURTESAN FROM TIRUVELLORE NEAR CHENNAI. HERE IS HER INTERESTING STORY.
A lampoon by a contemporary writer Chnna Venkanna, throws some light on Mangamma’s life. According to his account, she was the daughter of Tupaakula Lingama Nayaka of Chandragiri and a courtesan of Tiruvellore near Chennai. Her name was Kanakaa. Beautiful and accomplished young Kanaka migrated probably in search of a career to the court of Vijararaghava of Thanjavur, where talented women had the opportunity of rising to prominence. Vijayaraghava was said to have intended to take her in to his harem, but she left Thanjavur for some reason or other and married Chokkanatha Nayaka of Madurai, whose heart she captured by blandishments. The account, perhaps, distorted one, may contain a kernel of truth.
Mangamma alias Kanaka survived her husband and her son Rangakrishna Muthuveerappa Nayaka, and after the demise of the later in 1689 ruled the kingdom till 1707 as the regent during the minority of her grandson Vijayaranga Chokkanatha Nayaka.
The regency of Mangamma was a critical period in the history of the Nayaka Kingdom of Madurai, which was threatened on one side by the Mughal forces of Aurangzeb and on the other side by the rulers of Mysore, Thanjavur , Ramanathapuram and Travancore. Mangamma shrewdly decided that the only way of survival was to approve the supremacy of Mughal emperor. She agreed to pay him an annual tribute, and secured the goodwill of his officers and generals by suitable presents and bribes.

Towards her other enemies she adopted a policy of firmness and waged war upon them, on the whole successfully. Occasionally she had to buy off some of them with bribes, but that was only a temporary expedient. Later, when she felt she was strong enough, she overpowered the enemy and exacted compensation. She had for her counsellor Narasappiah , great in strategy and administration and in private life a skilful player on the Veena (lute).
Mangamma’s name is almost a household name in south Tamil Nadu. There are still in existence numerous avenues and cholutries, Dharmasalas built by her as well as the lofty piles like those that remain of the Nayaka Palaces within the fort area of Tiruchy.
Mangammal Choultry opposite Madurai railway station served thousands of pilgrims to Madurai and Rameswaram. All these are monuments to the greatness of her rule. Her benefactions to temples and gifts of Agraharams (Brahmin streets) to learned brahmins were numerous, but she was equally liberal in her endowments to Christian churches and Muslim darghas. The dargah of Baba Nattar Auliya in Thiruchy was specially favoured and received grants of villages.
Manucci has paid a handsome tribute to her benevolence and large hearted tolerance .
Niccalao Manucci (1638- 1717) was an Italian traveller and writer, who spent his life in India during the Mughal period.
SAURASHTRAS BECAME BRAHMINS
There is an interesting account of a social enactment in her reign. The Saurashtra weavers of Madurai claimed the privilege of observing some ceremonies peculiar to Brahmins (wearing sacred thread etc). Mangamma first opposed the claim, but later sanctioned it.
There are conflicting reports about the end of her reign. According to one account, power was forcibly wrested from her hands and transferred to her grandson, on his coming of age, and the queen perished in prison. Whatever may be the truth Mangamma’s place in history as a capable, enlightened and beneficent ruler is unchallengeable
