Item 559

In Avvaiyar‘s poems in Purananuru, one notable thing is her use of Sanskrit words; she never hesitated to use them though Tamil words were available for the same .

Puram 91 –Neela mani – sapphire

101- oosi- needle;

102- sakatam- cart; pandam – things; sema achchu – Protective axle

104- karmam /action, work

Puranānūru 100, Poet Avvaiyār sang for Athiyamān Nedumān Anji,

Spear in his hand, beautiful warrior
anklets on his legs, sweat on his body,
fresh wounds on his neck,
his dark, curly hair splendidly adorned
with needle-like fronds from the top
of young palmyra trees, entwined with
huge vetchi blossoms and vēngai flowers,
his enemies flee his sight,
like he were a mighty elephant that had
come back from battling a tiger,
so that the rage he felt has not yet left him.

Alas!  For those who aroused his anger,
there is no escape.
The eyes that saw his enemies are still red
even though they see his young son!

புறநானூறு 100, பாடியவர்: ஔவையார், பாடப்பட்டோன்: அதியமான் நெடுமான் அஞ்சி, திணை: வாகை, துறை: அரச வாகை
கையது வேலே, காலன புனை கழல்,
மெய்யது வியரே, மிடற்றது பசும்புண்,
வட்கர் போகிய வளர் இளம் போந்தை
உச்சிக் கொண்ட ஊசி வெண்தோட்டு
வெட்சி மா மலர் வேங்கையொடு விரைஇச்,  5
சுரி இரும் பித்தை பொலியச் சூடி,
வரிவயம் பொருத வயக்களிறு போல,
இன்னும் மாறாது சினனே அன்னோ,
உய்ந்தனர் அல்லர் இவன் உடற்றியோரே,
செறுவர் நோக்கிய கண் தன்  10
சிறுவனை நோக்கியும், சிவப்பு ஆனாவே.

In Puram 101, poetess Avvaiyar says , Chieftain Athiyaman will give the First day treatment for the second day, third day……………….many more days

This is because the popular saying is

You are given food in Thalai Vaazai Ilaiyile (Longest Banana leaf)

On the second day they will serve you food in Kaiyile (In your hand)

If you stay for one more day

On the third day they will serve you food on your Thalaiyile (on your head)

The meaning is, the hosts will throw you out.

Remembering this popular saying Avvai says Athiyaman treat everyone the same way irrespective of the period of your stay with him as a guest.

முதல் நாள் தலைவாழை இலையில

இரண்டாம் நாள் – கையில

மூன்றாம் நாள் – உன் தலையில

Puranānūru 101, Poet Avvaiyār sang for Athiyamān Nedumān Anji,

We did not go to him just for one day or two days,
but brought along many and went for many days,
and he welcomed us like it was the first day.

When we receive gifts from Athiyamān who owns
fine chariots and elephants adorned with ornaments,
they are there, whether it takes more or less time.
The gifts are in our hands like a ball of food placed
between the tusks of an elephant.

He will not fail us, my heart that desires food!
Do not worry!  May his efforts prosper!

ஒரு நாள் செல்லலம், இரு நாள் செல்லலம்,
பல நாள் பயின்று பலரொடு செல்லினும்,
தலைநாள் போன்ற விருப்பினன் மாதோ,
அணி பூண் அணிந்த யானை இயல் தேர்
அதியமான் பரிசில் பெறூஉங் காலம்  5
நீட்டினும் நீட்டாது ஆயினும், யானை தன்
கோட்டு இடை வைத்த கவளம் போலக்
கையகத்தது, அது பொய் ஆகாதே,
அருந்த ஏமாந்த நெஞ்சம்,
வருந்த வேண்டா, வாழ்க அவன் தாளே.  10

Item 561 Sixteen Blessings

In Puram verse 102 Avvaiayar praised Pokuttu Ezini, son of Chieftain Athiyaman and compared him to the Full Moon. Commentators say that he is blessed with 16 boons or blessings like the Moon. Hindus believe that on Full Moon Day (Purnima) the moon has all the 16 phases; it shines bright and there is no place for darkness.

The sixteen boons or blessings according to Abhirami Bhattar’s famous poem are:

2. Long Life

3. Good Friends

4. Prosperity

5. Eternal youth

6. Life without diseases

7. Steady Mind

8. Ever loving wife

9. Good Children

10.Fame

11.Truthness

கலையாத கல்வியும் குறையாத வயதுமோர்

கபடு வாராத நட்பும்

கன்றாத வளமையுங் குன்றாத இ­ளமையும்

கழுபிணியிலாத உடலும்

சலியாத மனமும் அன்பு அகலாத மனைவியும்

தவறாத சந்தானமும்

தாழாத கீர்த்தியும் மாறாத வார்த்தையும்

தடைகள் வாராத கொடையும்

தொலையாத நிதியமும் கோணாத கோலும் ஒரு

துன்பமில்லாத வாழ்வும்

துய்ய நின் பாதத்தில் அன்பும் உதவி பெரிய

தொண்டரொடு கூட்டு கண்டாய்

அலையாழி அறிதுயிலு மாயனது தங்கையே!

ஆதிகட வூரின் வாழ்வே!

அமுதீசர் ஒருபாகம் அகலாத சுகபாணி!

அருள்வாமி! அபிராமியே!

சகடம் பண்டம் பெரிது பெய்தன்றே,
அவல் இழியினும் மிசை ஏறினும்
அவணது அறியுநர் யார் என உமணர்
கீழ்மரத்து யாத்த சேம அச்சு அன்ன,  5
இசை விளங்கு கவிகை நெடியோய், திங்கள்
நாள் நிறை மதியத்து அனையை, இருள்
யாவணதோ நின் நிழல் வாழ்வோர்க்கே?

Puranānūru 102, Poet Avvaiyār sang for Athiyamān Nedumān Anji’s son Pokuttu Ezhini,

Not knowing what could happen,
salt merchants tie spare axles to the
lower wooden beams of their wagons,
since the bulls are young and not
acquainted with yokes, and since there
are heavy loads in the wagons which
climb on mounds and go down
through ditches.

O lord!  You are like that spare axle,
a great man with cupped hands
that give.  You are like the full moon.
How can there be darkness for those
who live under your protection?

Item 562 Meat Eaters

Ancient Tamils were meat eaters. Here in poem 103 Avvaiyar says hat the Virali (dancer) will get if she goes to Athiyaman’s place. Another interesting Tamil word word is MANDAI. In those days it was the begging vessel and now the meaning is head.

Hanging a pathalai drum on one side, and
a small, hollow muzhavu drum on another side,
O virali in the wasteland with a few bangles,
you wonder who will turn your dish right
side up!

If you go to him, he is not far away.
He is in the land of his enemies, where in
the harsh battlefield, a mass of black smoke
surrounds young male elephants
like clouds that surround mountains.

Ānji of many spears, even in hard times,
keeps the bowls of bards filled with food,
meat with fat that appear like soft adais
made with wax.  May all his efforts prosper!

ஒரு தலைப் பதலை தூங்க, ஒரு தலைத்

‘கவிழ்ந்த மண்டை மலர்க்குநர் யார்?’ எனச்
சுரன் முதல் இருந்த சில் வளை விறலி!
செல்வை ஆயின் சேணோன் அல்லன்,  5
முனை சுட எழுந்த மங்குல் மாப் புகை
மலை சூழ் மஞ்சின், மழ களிறு அணியும்
பகைப் புலத்தோனே, பல் வேல் அஞ்சி,
பொழுது இடைப்படாஅப் புலரா மண்டை
மெழுகு மெல் அடையின் கொழு நிணம் பெருப்ப,  10
அலத்தற் காலை ஆயினும்,
புரத்தல் வல்லன், வாழ்க அவன் தாளே.

Item 562 Elephant and Crocodile simile

In Puram 104, Avvaiyar used the famous Gajendra Moksha scene as a simile. Crocodile attacking elephant Gajendra is sculpted all over India from Gupta period. Here Avvai used it to praise Athiyaman’s son. He is compared to a crocodile. An interesting simile.

Protect yourselves warriors!  Let me tell you!
My lord is like a crocodile that can drag in
and slaughter an elephant in knee-deep,
shallow water muddied by the playing feet
of the little children in town.

If you don’t consider his acts, but despise
him by saying “He is just a young man,”
victory will come hard for you!

ஈர்ப்பு உடைக் கராஅத்து அன்ன, என் ஐ
நுண் பல் கருமம் நினையாது,  5
இளையன் என்று இகழின், பெறல் அரிது ஆடே.
