Beware of Wagtail Birds: Prediction by Varahamihira!

Varahamihira, the author of Sanskrit encyclopaedia Brhat Samhita deals with lot of scientific things; but yet he has devoted several chapters to omens and beasts, omens and birds. It is nothing but the reflection of his age. Tamil literature and the modern Panchang (ephemeris) also contain bird and lizard predictions. Several communities including the Etruscans believed in such things. It is easy to spot a street astrologer with a caged parrot in Indian streets.

Varahamihira did not ‘write’ this. He just compiled people’s beliefs and the books available at his time, i.e 1500 years ago.

He begins the chapter by saying

“I shall now expound the effects, enunciated by ancient sages, of the first sighting of the bird called wagtail.

A variety of wagtail named Bhadra, which has a stout body and a black raised neck, is auspicious.

One which is black from the face to the neck is called Sampurna and fulfils one’s ambition.

The one with the dark spots on the neck and white cheeks is named Rikta (empty) and causes disappointment

The one called Gopila which is yellow in colour produces troubles when sighted.

If a wagtail is sighted in the following places it will bring prosperity: Flowering trees, fruit trees, holy lakes and rivers, on the back of elephants, horses, cows and serpents; on temples, gardens, mansions, cow pens, places of sacrifices, assembly of virtuous men.

To get your dream girl

When the wagtail is seen perched on

Silt- one will enjoy sweet food

Cow dung – one will enjoy milk and milk products

Green grass – clothes

On a cart- devastation to country

Roof of the house – loss of wealth

On a piece of hide – imprisonment

On the backs of goats and sheep – immediate union with one’s beloved

Negative effect

If the wagtail is seen sitting on a buffalo, camel, donkey, bones, burial ground, clod of earth, turret, heap of ashes, compound wall – the result would be disastrous.

If it is seen flapping its wings – inauspicious

Seen drinking water – auspicious

Sighting in the morning – beneficial

Sighting in the evening – harmful

Do you want to find Treasure?

There will be a treasure underneath the place where the wagtail copulates; mica, where it vomits and charcoal, where it voids its excrements.

Every rule has an exception; for every sin there is some atonement. Even if a king sees a wagtail in an inauspicious place, he can avoid the negative consequences, by worshiping Brahmins, Gurus, and pious men and avoid non vegetarian meal for a week.

Al like any bird prediction, Varahamihira also gives predictions for the people who wanted to leave early.

மகாவம்சம் என்றால் என்ன?

இது பாலி மொழியில் எழுதப்பட்ட இலங்கையின் வரலாறு. இலங்கையின் வரலாறு என்பதைவிட இலங்கையில் புத்தமதம் பரவிய வரலாறு என்பது பொருத்தமாக இருக்கும். ஏனெனில் இலங்கை என்னும் நாடு இராமாயண காலத்தில் இருந்தே வாழும் நாடு. இந்தியாவின் வங்காளப் பகுதியில் இருந்து நாடுகடத்தப்பட்ட விஜயன் என்னும் மன்னன் இலங்கையில் வந்து இறங்கிய நாள் முதல் மஹாசேனன் (கி.மு. 543 முதல் கி.பி. 361 முடிய) என்ற மன்னனின் ஆட்சி முடியும் வரையுள்ள இலங்கையின் வரலாற்றை இன்னூல் இயம்புகிறது.

காளிதாசன் எழுதிய புகழ்பெற்ற ரகுவம்சம் என்னும் காவியம் சூரியவம்ச அரசர்களின் அருமை பெருமைகளைப் போற்றிப் பாடுகிறது. அதை மனதிற்கொண்டு மஹாவம்சம் என்று பெயரிட்டனர் போலும்.

அக்கால சோதிட, ஆரூட நம்பிக்கைகளைச் சுருக்கித் தருகிறேன்.

சங்க காலத் தமிழரின் ஜோதிட நம்பிக்கைகள், கிளி ஜோதிடம் பற்றி எல்லாம் ஏற்கனவே எழுதிவிட்டேன். மஹாவம்சத்தில் குறிப்பிடப்படும் ஆருடக்காரர்கள் எப்படி அதைச் சொன்னார்கள் என்று எழுதப்படவில்லை. குஷ்டரோகிகளும் குருடர்களும் கூட ஆரூடம் சொன்னதை அது எடுத்துரைக்கிறது. ஒருவேளை உள்ளுணர்வால் (இன் ட்யூஷன்) அல்லது சாமுத்ரிகா லட்சணத்தால் இப்படிச் சொல்லி இருக்கலாம். இந்தியாவில் ரோட்டில் விளையாடிக் கொண்டிருந்த சிறுவனைப் பார்த்துக்கூட மந்திரி ஆவாய், அரசன் ஆவாய் என்று சொன்ன சம்பவங்கள் உண்டு.

ஆரூடம் 1

பாண்டு அபயன் பட்டாபிஷேகம் என்பது பத்தாவது அத்தியாயத்தின் பெயர். அவனைக் கொல்ல பல சதிகள் நடந்ததால் ஒளிந்துவாழ வேண்டிய நிலை. அப்போது பண்டுலா என்னும் பணக்கார, வேதம் கற்ற பிராமணன் அவனைச் சந்தித்து நீ தான் பாண்டு அபயனா என்று கேட்கிறார். அவன் ஆம் என்றவுடன் நீ அரசன் ஆகப் போகிறாய், எழுபது ஆண்டுகள் அரசாட்சி புரிவாய். இப்போதே ராஜ தர்மங்களைக் கற்றுக் கொள் என்கிறார். அவனும் அவருடைய மகன் சந்தனும் அவருக்கு அரசாளும் கலையைக் கற்றுத் தருகின்றனர்.

இதில் வேறு சில உண்மைகளையும் உய்த்தறியலாம். 2600 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் இலங்கையில் ஒரு கிராமத்தில்கூட வேதம் கற்ற பிராமணன் இருந்தான். அவன் பணக்காரன். அவன் முக்காலமும் உணர வல்லவன். அவன் மாற்றானுக்கு பிரதிபலனை எதிர்பார்க்காமல் நன்மை செய்தான். அவனும் அவன் மகனும் போர்க்கலையிலும் ராஜ தந்திரத்திலும் வல்லவர்கள்.
அர்த்தசாஸ்திரம் என்னும் உலகப் புகழ்பெற்ற நூலை எழுதிய சாணக்கியன் என்ற பிராமணன நாம் எல்லோரும் அறிவோம்

மஹாபாரத காலத்தில் துரோணன் என்னும் பிராமணன் தான் பாண்டவ ,கௌரவர்களுக்குப் பாடம் சொல்லிக் கொடுத்தார் எனபது நமக்குத் தெரிந்த விஷயமே. இலங்கையில் கி.மு. ஐந்தாம் நூற்றாண்டில் கற்றறிந்த பிரமணன் இருந்தான் என்றால் தமிழ்நாடு என்ன சளைத்ததா?

ஒல்காப்புகழ் தொல்காப்பியனுக்கே, நான்மறை முற்றிய அதங்கோட்டாசான் தான் ‘சர்ட்டிபிகேட்’ கொடுத்தார். அவருக்கு முன்னால் அகத்தியன் என்னும் வேதியன் என்பான் தமிழுக்கு இலக்கணம் வகுத்தான்.

1.தமிழ்த் தாய் பாடலில்……………..
ஆதி சிவன் பெற்று விட்டான் – என்னை
ஆரிய மைந்தன் அகத்தியன் என்றோர்
வேதியன் கண்டு மகிழ்ந்தெ – நிறை
மேவும் இலக்கணஞ் செய்து கொடுத்தான் (பாரதியார் பாடல்)

ஆரூடம் 2

மகாவிகாரை என்னும் 15-ஆவது அத்தியாயத்தில் மன்னனிடம் தேரர் கூறுகிறார்: உன்னுடைய சகோதரன் மகாநாமனுடைய மைந்தன் யத்தாலாயகதீசன் இனிமேல் அரசன் ஆவான். அவன் மகன் கோத அபயன், அவன் மகன் காகவனதீசன், அவன் மகன் அபயன் ஆகியோர் அடுத்தடுத்து அரசன் ஆவர். அபயன் என்பவன் துட்டகாமனி என்னும் பெயருடன் புகழ்பெற்று விளங்குவான் என்பது ஆருடம்.

புண்ய புருஷர்கள், சாது சந்யாசிகள் ஆகியோர், எதிர்காலத்தை உணர்ந்தவர்கள் என்ற நம்பிக்கை இந்தியாவில் உண்டு. மக்கள் அவர்கள் சொல்வதை நம்பினர் என்பதை மஹாவம்ச சரிதம் காட்டுகிறது. இது போன்ற விஷயங்கள் பவிஷ்ய புராணத்திலும் இருக்கிறது.

ஆரூடம் 3

12 அரசர்கள் என்ற 35-ஆவது அத்தியாயத்தில் வசபன் என்ற லம்பகர்ணன் அரசன் ஆவான் என்று ஒரு ஆருடம் இருந்தது. அவனைப் பார்த்த ஒரு குஷ்டரோகியும் கூட இதை அவனிடம் சொல்கிறான். முன்னரே வசபன் என்ற பெயருள்ளவன் அரசன் ஆவான் என்று ஜோதிடர்கள் சொன்னதால் வசபன் பெயர்கொண்ட எல்லா வாலிபர்களியும் தீர்த்துக் கட்டினான் மன்னன். அப்படியும் ஆருடப் படியே ஒரு வசபன் அரசன் ஆனான். உடனே தனது ஆயுட்காலம் பற்றி ஜோதிடரைக் கலந்தாலோசித்தான். அவன் இவனுக்கு 12 வருடமே ஆயுள் என்றவுடன் புத்தமத தேரர்களைச் சந்தித்து ஆயுளை நீட்டிப்பதற்கான வழிமுறைகளை கண்டறிகிறான். அதன்படி தான தருமங்களைச் செய்கிறான்.

ஆரூடம் 4

13 அரசர்கள் என்ற 36-ஆவது அத்தியாயத்தில் ஒரு அந்தகன் ஆரூடம் சொன்ன அதிசய சம்பவம் வருகிறது. சங்கதீசன், சங்கபோதி, கோதகாபயன் என்ற மூன்று லம்பகர்ணர்கள் நடந்துவரும் காலடி சப்தத்தைக் கேட்ட மாத்திரத்திலேயே ஒரு கண்பார்வையற்ற ஆள், மூன்று மன்னர்களை இந்த மண் தாங்கிநிற்கிறது என்றான். அவர்கள் மூவரும் விஜயகுமரன் என்ற அரசனிடம் சேவகம் செய்து பின்னர் அவனைக் கொன்றுவிடுகின்றனர். சங்கதீசன் என்ற லம்பகர்ணனை மற்ற இருவரும் சேர்ந்து முடி சூட்டுகின்றனர்.

இந்த சம்பவங்கள் அக்காலத்தில் ஜோதிடர்கள் இருந்ததையும் அவர்களை மன்னர்கள் அல்லது எதிர்கால மன்னர்கள் கலந்தாலோசித்தனர் என்பதையும் காட்டுகின்றன.

அடுத்தாற்போல “மகாவம்சத்தில் அற்புதச் செய்திகள்”, “மகாவம்சத்தில் படுகொலைகள்”, “மகாவம்சத்தில் தமிழ் வரலாற்றுச் செய்திகள்” என்ற ஆய்வுக் கட்டுரைகள் வெளிவரும்.

Astrology in Mahavamsa!

What is Mahavamsa?
Mahavamsa is a book in Pali language narrating the history of Kings of Sri Lanka. It gives a continuous history from the date Vijayan from Bengal ( India ) landed in Sri Lanka. It covers the period between 543 BCE and 361 CE. The book was called Mahavamsa following the Raguvamsa of Kalidasa in which Kalidasa gives history of solar race that ruled Northern India. Mahavamsa means Great Dynasty or Great Chronicle.

There are lot of interesting astrological references in the book. It shows that the people of the land between Kandy and Kashmir had the same belief. I have already given the astrological beliefs of Sangam age Tamils. It is all the same. But we don’t know whether they worked on the basis of planetary positions in their horoscopes or they did face reading and predicted out of intuition. Even lepers and blind people do predictions in Mahavamsa. In Indian real life stories we come across incidents where someone predicts that this little boy would become a great king. We did not know how they worked it out. It may be intuitive power or mastery of Shamudrika Lakshan (body marks or shape).

Prediction No.1
In the tenth chapter “Consecration of Pandukabaya”, a rich Brahmin by name Pandula makes a prediction that he (Pandu Abhaya) would become the king and rule the country for seventy years. He asked him to learn the art (of ruling) and Pandukabaya learnt the art from Brahmin’s son Canda. Pandu abahya ruled for seventy years. This is one of the longest rules we hear in history!

Pandula was learned in the Vedas and has been living there for long. This shows that Vedic studies were available in Sri Lanka in the fourth century BCE. This is similar to Chanakya teaching Chnadragupta. In those days only Brahmins were teachers from Kashmir to Kandy. Even the Pandavas learnt only from the Brahmin teacher Drona. Parasurama also taught the Kshatriyas (Ruling class).

Prediction No.2
In the fifteenth chapter “The acceptance of Mahavihara”, a thera gives predictions about future kings:
“One descended from you will build this Stupa. The son of your brother Yaththalayakatissa will become the king. His son Gothabhaya and his son Kakavnna tissa will be the rulers. And his son Abhaya with the name of Duttagamini will build the Stupa here”.

This shows that people believed that saints or people like theras can make predictions for 3 or 4 generations. We see such predictions in the Hindu Puranas.

Prediction No.3
In the chapter on Thirteen Kings (Chapter 36) a blind man who had the gift of prophesy makes predictions just by listening to the sound of the foot steps of three Lambakarnas: “The ground bears here the three rulers of the earth”. When they asked for clarification he predicted that the last of the three men Samghatissa will be the king. And he ruled for four years.

Congress leaders did Hindu Yagna before last general elections for their victory. Individually they won, but their party lost miserably.

Prediction No.4
In Chapter 35, Twelve Kings, one Lambakarna man by name Vasabha was predicted to become the king. He escaped from several dangers and became the king. Even a leper told him that he would become the king. When he became the king he consulted an astrologer to know the length of his life. He told him that he would live for 12 years only. Then the king met the Buddhist teachers and asked what would prolong one’s life. And he did donate whatever they told him to donate to prolong his life.

This shows that even the kings were concerned about their future and they were at the mercy of soothsayers.

There are many more things in Mahavamsa, but strictly speaking they would fall under the category of Miracles. I will write about them in another post.

Nine Planets in Hindu Astronomy

Hindus called heavenly bodies Grahas. So Nava Grahas/ Nine Planets include Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Strictly speaking, sun is a star and moon is earth’s satellite and Rahu and Ketu are north and south lunar nodes. Four of the “nine planets” are not planets. They calculated correctly the time of the eclipses in spite of these naming.

Thesauruses like Amarakosa in Sanskrit and Diwakaram and Pingalandhai in Tamil give several names for the planets. What do we know from these names or epithets for the planets? Navagraha stotras also describe the planets, their colours and their virtues. Now and then we read some “scholarly” articles about Hindus copying Greeks or the Babylonians. Is there any truth in it?

Following are taken from our Hymns or Thesarus:
Statement 1
Mars is the son of Earth (Bhumi putra, Mahisuta)
Statement 2
Mercury is the son of Moon (Induja, Somaja)
Statement 3
Saturn is the son of Sun (Chaya putra)
Statement 4
Venus causes rains (Rain planet in Tamil)
Statement 5
Moon influences Mind; moon is born out of the mind of God
Statement 6
Sun is linked to Eyes; sun is born out of the eyes of God
Statement 7
60,000 Valakilya Rishis, seers of thumb size, travel with the sun.
Statement 8
Guru/Jupiter is the Teacher (guru) of the Devas; Venus is the Teacher of Demons. Both are Brahmins.
Statement 9
Colours of the Planets: Saturn is black, Jupiter is Golden, Mercury is Green, Mars is red and Venus is white.
Statement 10
Saturn is lame or a slow coach; Jupiter measures the years.

What is the meaning?
The above statements are rough translations of the words found in thesaurus or the hymns. What do they mean? Are they scientific?
The short answer is most of them are yet to be proved by science. Let me give some explanations

About Statements 1, 2, 3
When you say that a particular planet is the son of another heavenly body (Graha) it may mean collision between the two heavenly bodies produced X planet. So we call the X planet is the son of so and so. In short it is an astronomical event happened long ago. In astronomical terms billions of years ago.
Another meaning is one looks like another. For instance Mars looks like earth and so we call it the son of the Earth.

The third meaning is that earthly creatures are going to settle in Mars in future. So we call Mars is the son of earth.

The fourth meaning is a hidden meaning which we don’t know now. May be future scientific discoveries may prove us right. If we take soil samples from both the planets and compare it, clearer picture will emerge.
For instance there are several theories about the origin of moon. Nothing is proved beyond doubt. Some say it is a big chunk thrown out of earth because of a collision and it can be easily fit into Pacific Ocean. Some others say it was caught by earth and made a slave (satellite) of earth. These theories can be made as beautiful Puranic stories (Mythology).

About Statement 4
Venus- Rain connection may be superficial or more than that. It is in Sanskrit books as well as Sangam Tamil books. The amount of rains or the drought is forecast by the position or movement of Venus in the sky according to Tamil commentators. Science hasn’t proved it yet.

About Statements 5,6
Rig Veda says that the sun and moon are born from the eyes and mind of the Supreme God. We know for sure the connection between the moon and the mind. Lot of articles have come out in science journals linking the lunatics and the full moon. Hindus believe that doing Surya Namaskar every day in the morning will brighten one’s eyes. Science has to prove it.
“Chandrama Manaso Jata: Chakshor Suryo Ajayata” (Purushasukta in the Tenth Mandala of Rig Veda).

About Statements 8,9, 10
The colours are partly right. When we look at Mars in the sky it is blood red in the night sky.
When we say Saturn is “lame” we know that is the planet that takes longer years than other planets in completing one circle in orbit (30 years). When we say that Jupiter is the planet that measures years we mean it moves from one zodiac sign to another sign every year and completes the 12 zodiacal signs in 12 years which decides Kumba mela, Maha makam and other big festivals.

I have already written about the Valakilya Rishis (Lilliputian seers travelling with sun). I have also written about the Heavy planet Guru and its sling shot effect in sending the rockets without fuel. Guru in Sanskrit means Heavy and one who sends up (elevates) others.

My Conclusions:
1.No other language has got so many names for the planets or stars like Tamil and Sanskrit. This shows that astronomy was born here and we have not borrowed it from the Greeks or the Babylonians.

2.Brahmins in their Sandhya Vandhanam every day, worship Navagrahas in the same order like Sunday , Monday, Tuesday …….. They couldn’t have borrowed it from someone and inserted it in their Vedic ceremonies.

3.Tamil saint Sambandhar of seventh century CE sang about the nine planets in the same order. So it is Vedic and not Greek.

4. Moreover these beliefs are listed in 2000 year old scriptures in Tamil and Sanskrit from Kanyakumari to Himalayas covering the vast sub continent. So they couldn’t have borrowed it during Alexander’s time and spread it over the entire country. There were no mobile phones or telephone lines or electronic communication at that time!

5. Foreign beliefs can’t be inserted into Hindu ceremonies that easily. They have a fool proof system.

6. Purusha sukta of Rig Veda linked mind to Moon. It is scientifically proved with lots of research confirming the link between the two.

We can conclude that Hindus spread it to the whole word like their decimal system and Hindu numerals.

ஜோதிடமும் கோடீஸ்வரர்களும்!

ஜோதிடம் உண்மையா? ‘’கொஞ்சம் உண்மை’’ இருக்கிறது என்று சொல்ல ஒரு ஆதாரம் கிடைத்து இருக்கிறது.

ஜோதிடம் உண்மையானால் நடக்கப் போகும் விஷயங்களில் நூறு சதவிகிதம் இல்லாவிட்டாலும் 75 சதவிகிதமாவது முன் கூட்டியே சொல்ல வேண்டும். நடந்த பின்னர் நாத்ரதாமஸ் Nostradamus (1503 – 1566) என்பவர் அன்றே சொன்னார் என்று பிதற்றுவதில் பொருள் இல்லை. ஜோதிடர்கள் உண்மை விளம்பிகளாக இருந்தால், நடக்கப் போகும் விஷயங்களை முன்கூட்டியே எழுதி ஒரு ‘கவரில்’ போட்டுக் கொடுக்கட்டும். பின்னர் ஆண்டு முடிவில் நான் சொன்னதில் இத்தனை சரியாக இருந்தது ஆகையால் ஜோதிடம் உண்மை என்று சொல்லட்டும்.

35 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் மதுரையில் நடந்த ஒரு சம்பவம் நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. அப்போது நான் மதுரை தினமணியில் சீனியர் உதவி ஆசிரியராக வேலை பார்த்தேன். எனது தந்தை செய்தி ஆசிரியராக இருந்தார். மதுரையில் உள்ள ஒரு வணிகப் பிரமுகர், எல்லா ஜோதிடர்களுக்கும் ஒரு சவால் விட்டார். “நான் பத்து பிரமுகர்களின் ஜாதகங்களை ஒரு உறையில் போட்டுத் தருகிறேன். அதில் பத்து கேள்விகள் இருக்கும்— சரியான பதில் தரும் ஜோதிடருக்கு பெரிய ரொக்கப் பரிசு” என்று அறிவித்தார். ஜோதிடர்களுக்கு அவை யாருடைய ஜாதகங்கள் என்று தெரியாது. ஆனால் மதுரைப் பிரமுகர்கள் அடங்கிய கமிட்டிக்கு மட்டும் தெரியும். குறிப்பிட்ட நாளன்று பொது மக்கள் முன்னால் அந்த உறைகள் (கவர்) பகிரங்கமாகத் திறக்கப்பட்டு ஆராயப்படும் என்று தினமணியில் செய்தி வெளியானது. எங்கள் தினமணி ஜோதிடர் உள்பட யாரும் அந்த சவாலை ஏற்க முன்வில்லை!!

ஜோதிடம் உண்மைதான். ஆனால் அதை சரியாக கணக்கிட்டுச் சொல்லும் திறமைசாலிகள் குறைந்துவிட்டனர். நாம் சூப்பர் கம்ப்யூட்ட்ர் யுகத்தில் வாழ்கிறோம். சரியான முறையில் எல்லா விஷயங்களையும் அதில் போட்டுவிட்டால் பிறகு நல்ல முறையில் ஆரூடம் சொல்ல முடியும். ஒரு காலத்தில் நானும் என் சகோதர்களும் அஷ்டாவர்கம் வரையில் போட்டு ஜாதகங்களை ஆராய்ந்ததால் இதில் எவ்வளவு கணக்குகள் உள்ளன என்பது புரிகிறது. மேலும் ஜாதகம் கொண்டு வருவோரும் சரியான ஜாதகத்தைத் தான் கொடுத்தாரா என்பதையும் அறியவேண்டும்.

ஜோதிடம் உண்மை என்பதற்கான சில ஆதாரங்களைக் காண்போம். பெரிய பெரிய சுவாமிகள், பாபாக்கள் போன்றோர் ஒரு பக்தரைப் பார்த்த மாத்திர த்திலேயே அவர்கள் ஜாதகத்தில் உள்ள குறைபாடுகளைச் சொல்லிப் பரிகாரம் சொல்கிறார்கள். அவர்களுடைய ஜாதகங்களைப் பாராமலேயே உள்ளுணர்வு, தெய்வீக ஆற்றல் மூலம் இப்படிச் சொல்வதை அருகில் இருந்து கவனித்து இருக்கிறேன்.

We have some proof to say that astrology is right to some extent.

If astrology is true, it should give us some concrete proof. If astrology is true, it should forecast all the events, or at least 75% of the events that is going to happen. I don’t believe in Nostradamus. He might have been a true seer or a prophet or a clairvoyant. But the way he wrote always gave us two or three meanings or it may be interpreted in the way you wish. So anyone quoting him must produce all predictions before hand and should say at the end of the year in how many he or she was right. Everybody fools people by saying that Nostradamus (1503 – 1566) had already prophesied or predicted this and that. Had he alive today he himself would refute most of those cheats.

When I was working as Senior Sub Editor for Dinamani Newspaper in Madurai there was a wealthy businessman who challenged all the astrologers of Tamil Nadu. He told them through our newspaper that he would submit ten questions and some horoscopes of living people who are very popular. But the astrologers would not know whose horoscope it is. Only a committee of Madurai VIPs would know. All the envelopes with the predictions of the astrologers would be opened by the committee in front of the general public. Any astrologer with 75% success rate would get a big cash prize. My father who was News Editor at that time published this appeal several times. No astrologer came forward to accept the challenge. The person who challenged the astrologers did this through some club like Rotary or Lions; I don’t remember now. All this happened 35 years ago.

But there are certain indications which show that there is ‘some truth’ in astrology. Only problem is that you need huge calculations and intuition to predict correctly. I have seen even some Swamijis (Babas) saying that because of this planet that someone is undergoing a good or bad period. They don’t do it for money like astrologers. As soon as they look at the person they give predictions like this.

Now and then Western News Papers publish the zodiac signs of sportsmen or actors or actresses. Certain signs always dominate in each and every walk of life.

Every year The Sunday Times of London publish a supplement of Rich people in the United Kingdom. They will rank 1000 rich people of the country. The news paper analyses the list from various angles: How many of them made money through mass media, business, arts, films, music, publishing etc. In a small tabular column they also publish the zodiac sign list of the billionaires.

People who are born under Gemini Sign always dominate the billionaires list. Hindu astrology and Western astrology are different. Gemini means Miduna Rasi. So Gemini in Western astrology won’t be the same in Hindu horoscope calculations. Westerners decide your zodiac sign by the date you are born. But to my surprise whether it is Miduna Rasi in Hindu astrology or Gemini sign in Western astrology most of the rich people are born under GEMINI sign!!

Astrologers versus Saints

Appar alias Tirunavukkarasu

Planets can’t influence the course of events in the presence of saints. It won’t affect even their devotees. We see the evil effects of malevolent planets are nullified when saints want to do something good. We have an anecdote to prove this in the life of one of the Saivite saints of Tamil Nadu. He lived in the seventh century.

Tiru Jnana Sambandhar, the miracle boy and a Great Saivite saint, was invited to Pandya country by the queen and the chief minister to cure the disease of the king. At that time the king was under the influence of Jains who were politically lenient and involved themselves in various non religious activities. The invitation was delivered to him when the minister and queen met Sambandhar at Thirumaraikkaadu in Choza territory. Senior most Tamil saint Appar was with him at that time. He knew very well the mischief of the politically lenient people. So he warned the boy saint.

Sambandhar started composing beautiful verses on Lord Siva from the age of three and he died at the age of sixteen. Since he was very young when the invitation came, Appar thought that it would be wise to warn him. But he was a divine child. Appar himself had suffered a lot under the Pallava King Mahendra Varman, who was also under the influence of Jains. Appar is known as Tirunavukkarasar.

Sambandhar who was considered an incarnation of Lord Subramanya, like Adi Sankara, told Appar, to stop worrying. He told him that the effects of nine planets won’t harm him. He sang a beautiful poem to nullify the effects of the evil planets. It is sung by lot of Tamils until today when they are undergoing some bad effects of malevolent planets.

Sekkizar who sang about all the Saivite saints in the tenth century recorded this anecdote in his poem as well. He said,
“Appar said out of concern
“Dear son!
There is no limit to the perfidy
of those wretched people;
I have something more to say;
The planetary aspects too are malevolent;
It is not proper for you
To agree to go there”.

Sambandhar

Sambandhar replied:
“If it is true that the object we worship
Is the feet of our Lord,
No harm will approach us”.
Saying so, he contemplated
The fragrant blossoms –
The rosy feet of the Transcendent Being –
And expounded his credo
By the decad beginning with the words,
“The Partner of Her
With shoulders smooth like the bamboo”.
(In Tamil VeyuRu ThoLibagngan VidamuNda KanDan….)

Sambandhar’s actual prayer to Lord Siva went like this:

“Since the Partner of Her
With shoulders smooth like the bamboo,
He with the throat which swallowed the poison,
He who plays the Veena
And wears on His crown
The flawless moon and the Ganges
Since He has taken abode in my heart
The Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury,
Jupiter, Venus, Saturn,
And the two snakes (Rahu and Ketu);
They all are unqualifiedly good, good indeed,
Wholly good are they to the devotees,
Exceedingly good they are!

Beginning with this verse he sang ten verses (decad) and went to the Pandya country. Though he had to face stiff opposition and competition from the Jains there, he won the fight at the end.

Saints versus Planets: A Story by Swami Ramdas
Following story is from “Stories as told by Swami Ramdas”:–

An itinerant saint came to a certain place along with his young disciple. The routine was that the disciple should go for alms (Bhiksha), and after collecting sufficient provisions come back to the Guru. Both would then cook food from the provisions thus secured and satisfy the hunger.

As usual, the disciple, who was yet a boy, started in the morning on his daily Bhiksha (going for alms). When he was passing through a lane he was called by an astrologer who sat on the Verandah of his house waiting for customers. Having had no customers till then and finding no work to do he asked the boy to sit by his side. Taking that moment as the basis, the astrologer studied the planets governing the life of the boy and found out that the boy, according to his reading, should die next day. The astrologer told this anticipated event to the boy.

The boy hearing the prediction of the astrologer was thoroughly frightened. He could not collect the Bhiksha for the day, but hurriedly went back to his Guru. With tears in his eyes he told his Master about the dire prediction of the astrologer. Then the guru calmly replied: “Look here my boy, nothing is going to happen to you tomorrow. You will be alright.” He kept the boy with him the whole day. On the following day the boy was asked to go for Bhiksha in the usual course. The boy again happened to go through the same lane in which the astrologer lived. The astrologer was astounded to find him alive contrary to his prediction. He called the boy, asked him who his Guru was, and expressed a wish to have his Darshan.

Four Great Saivite Saints.

Accordingly, led by the boy, the astrologer went to the saint whose disciple the boy was. The boy introduced the astrologer to his Guru. The saint looked at the astrologer and said, “You freighted my disciple unnecessarily. Do you think he will meet with any harm so long as he is under my protection? It was unwise of you to have upset the mind of the boy by saying that he would die yesterday”
Such is the power of the saints.

சங்கத்தமிழ் முழங்கும் ஜோதிட உண்மைகள்!

சனி தப்பினாலும் செங்கோல் மழை தரத் தப்பாது!

சங்க இலக்கியக் கடலில் அற்புதமான ஜோதிட முத்துக்கள் ஏராளம் உள்ளன.மாதிரிக்குச் சில உண்மைகளைப் பார்ப்போம்.
சனி கிரகத்தை மைம்மீன் என சங்க இலக்கியம் குறிப்பிடுகிறது. அது புகையின் மழை பெய்யாதாம். ஆனால் அப்படிப்பட்ட மழை பெய்யாச் சூழ்நிலையிலும் கூட மன்னன் தனது செங்கோல் தப்பாது அரசாள்வதால் அவன் செங்கோல் சிறப்பாலேயே மழை பெய்கிறதாம்! இதைப் புறநானூறு (பாடல் 171) கூறுகிறது.பாடல் வரிகள் இதோ:-

மைம்மீன் புகையினும்.. .. பெயல் பிழைப்பு அறியாப் புன்புலத்ததுவே!

தூமகேதுவும் மழையும்

தூமகேதுவைப் பற்றித் தொன்று தொட்டு வழி வழியாக ஏராளமான நம்பிக்கைகள் உலகெங்கும் உண்டு. தமிழ் இலக்கியம் தூமகேது தோன்றின் மழை பெய்யாது;ஆனால் மன்னனின் செங்கோல் சிறப்பினால் மழை பெய்யும் என்று ‘செங்கோல் அறத்தின்’ சிறப்பினை எடுத்துக் கூறுகிறது. இந்தச் செய்தியை அதே பாட்டில் காணலாம். “தூமந் தோன்றினும்.. பெயல் பிழைப்பு அறியாப் புன்புலத்ததுவே!”

வைகை நதி அஷ்டமி போலச் சுருங்கும் அமாவாசை போல வறளாது!

வைகை நதியைப் பற்றிய சுவையான செய்தியைப் பரிபாடல் (பாடல்11;37-36)கூறுகிறது.

“எண்மதி நிறை யுவா இருண்மதி போல நாள்குறை படுதல் காணுநர் யாரே”

இதன் பொருள்: வைகை நதியின் நீர் அஷ்டமி போலச் சுருங்கும்;ஆனால் அமாவாசை போலச் சுருங்காது!

வாஸ்து ஜோதிடம்

மன்னன் அரண்மனை கட்டக் கால் கோள் நாள் பார்த்தல்
மன்னனின் அரண்மனையைக் கட்ட வாஸ்து பார்த்து ஜோதிடம் மூலம் நாள் பார்த்துக் கட்டக் கால்கோள் நாளைப் பற்றி நெடுநல்வாடை (73-78 வரிகள்) அழகுறச் சொல்லுகிறது.

“விரிகதிர் பரப்பிய வியல்வாய் மண்டிலம்
இருகோள் குறிநிலை வழுக்காது குடக்கோ
பொருதிறஞ் சாரா அரை நாள் அமயத்து
நூலறி புலவர் நுண்ணிதிற் கயிறிட்டு
தேஎங் கொண்டு தெய்வம் நோக்கி
பெரும்பெயர் மன்னர்க்கு ஒப்ப மனை வகுத்து”

பெரும்பெயர் அரசனுக்கு நூலறி புலவர் கயிறிட்டு, தெய்வம் நோக்கி அரண்மனை கட்டுவதை எப்படி அழகுறச் சொல்கிறார் புலவர்!

பூரி ஜகந்நாதர் ஆலயமும் கில்லாரி நீலகண்டர் ஆலயமும்
ஜோதிடம் மூலம் நாள் கணித்து வாஸ்து சாஸ்திரப் படி அரண்மனைகளையும் கோவில்களையும் இதர கட்டிடங்களையும் பாரத தேசம் முழுவதும் அனைவரும் கட்டி வந்ததை இங்கு கவனத்தில் கொள்ள வேண்டும். இவை எப்படி வலிமை வாய்ந்தவையாக இருந்தன என்பதற்கும் சமுதாய மக்களுக்கு எப்படி உதவின என்பதற்கும் உதாரணமாக (இடத்தைக் கருதி) இரு சம்பவங்களை மட்டும் இங்கு எடுத்துக் காட்டலாம்.

பழைய வானியலானது ககோளம் என நமது சாஸ்திர நூல்களில் குறிப்பிடப்படுகிறது.இதையும் கருத்தில் கொண்டே கட்டிடங்கள் அமைக்கப்பட்டன!ஜோதிட சாஸ்திரத்தின் படி நல்ல நாள் பார்த்து ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்ட இந்தக் கட்டிட வேலைகளை தெய்வீகப் பணியாகக் கருதி ஸ்தபதிகளும் பணியாளர்களும் அதில் ஈடுபடுவது வழக்கம். இப்படிக் கட்டப்பட்ட ஒன்று தான் பூரி ஜகன்னாதர் கோவில்.

30-10-99 தேதியிட்ட டெலகிராப் பத்திரிகை தரும் அதிசயச் செய்தி அறிக்கையில்.”மணிக்கு 250 கிலோமீட்டர் வேகத்தில் புயல் (இந்த வேகம் எவ்வளவு ஆபத்தானது என்பதை ஒரு கணம் சிந்தித்துப் பார்த்தல் அவசியம்) ஒரிஸாவைச் சேர்ந்த ஜகத்சிங்பூர், பூரி, பலோசோர், பட்ரக், கஞ்சம், குர்தா,, கட்டாக், கேந்த்ரபாரா உள்ளிட்ட கடற்கரை மாவட்டங்களைத் தாக்கியதாகவும், வேகமான காற்று பூரி ஜகந்நாதர் ஆலயத்தை நோக்கி வீசத் தொடங்கிய போது ஒரு நீல ஒளி ஜகந்நாதர் ஆலயத்திலிருந்து கிளம்பி புயல் காற்றை வெட்டித் தடுத்து ஆலயத்தைக் காத்ததாகவும் கூறுகிறது. ஒவ்வொரு புயலின் போதும் ஆலயங்களையே புகலிடமாக மக்கள் சென்று அடையும் ஒரு உண்மையே அந்த ஆலயங்கள் எவ்வளவு வலிமை வாய்ந்தவையாக அமைக்கப்பட்டன என்பதையும் சுட்டிக் காட்டுகின்றன.

1993ம் ஆண்டு செப்டம்பர் 30ம் தேதி லட்டூரில் ஏற்பட்ட பூகம்பத்தை பிரிட்டிஷ் நிபுணர்கள் ஒரு ஹைட்ரஜன் குண்டு போடப்பட்டதற்கு சமமாக ஒப்பிடுகின்றனர். இந்த பூகம்பத்தில் பூகம்பம் ஏற்பட்ட மையத்தின் அருகில் இருந்த கில்லாரி என்ற சிற்றூரில் இருந்த நீலகண்டர் ஆலயம் மட்டும் சேதம் அடையாமல் இருந்தது எப்படி என்பதை எண்ணி விஞ்ஞானிகள் மற்றும் பூகம்ப நிபுணர்கள் உள்ளிட்ட அனைவரும் வியக்கின்றனர்.

ஆக சரியான நேரத்தில் ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டு வாஸ்து பார்த்து கட்டப்பட்ட வலிமை வாய்ந்த அரண்மணைகளைச் சேர சோழ பாண்டிய மன்னர்கள் விரும்பி அமைத்தது சரிதான்! அதையே நெடுநல்வாடை சுட்டிக் காட்டுகிறது!

நிமித்தமும் சகுனங்களும்

இன்னும் ஜோதிடத்துடன் தொடர்பு கொண்ட சாமுத்திரிகா லட்சணம்,நிமித்தம்,திருமணச் சடங்குகள் போன்ற பல ஹிந்து வாழ்க்கை முறை சம்பந்தமான பொருள்களை எடுத்துக் கொண்டால் மேலும் பல நூற்றுக் கணக்கான குறிப்புகளைச் சங்க இலக்கியம் தருகிறது.

நிமித்தங்களில் தான் எத்தனை வகை! பொழுது நிமித்தம் (புறநானூறு-204), நாள் நிமித்தம் (தொல்காப்பியம் 1037) பறவை நிமித்தம் (தொல்காப்பியம் 1037) இவை போன்றவற்றை ஏராளமான பாடல்களில் காணலாம். அசரீரி என சொல்லப்படும்‘யாரிடமிருந்தோ வரும் நல்ல சொல்லை’ நன்மொழி என முல்லைப்பாட்டு (16-17)சுட்டிக் காட்டுகிறது.

காக்கை கரைந்தால் விருந்து வரும் (குறுந்தொகை 210), ஆண் ஓந்தி வலம் வந்தால் வழிப்பயணம் நலம் பயக்கும் (குறுந்தொகை 140),கனவில் படைக்கலம் கட்டிலுடன் கவிழுதல்,எட்டுத்திக்கிலும் எரிகொள்ளி விழுதல்,மரக்கிளை வற்றுதல் (புறம் 41),கனவில் தலையில் எண்ணெய் தேய்த்தல்(புறம் 41) போன்றவை தீமை பயக்குமாம்! பெண்களின் இடதுகண் துடித்தால் நல்ல நிமித்தமாம்.

(ஐங்குறுநூறு 218); பெண்களின் வளை இறுகினால் நல்ல நிமித்தமாம் (ஐங்குறுநூறு 218) இப்படி நூற்றுக்கணக்கான குறிப்புகளைச் சொல்லிக் கொண்டே போகலாம்.

அடுத்து கிரகணத்தைப் பற்றிய தமிழரின் அறிவு உலகின் தலை சிறந்த விஞ்ஞானிகளே வியக்கும் ஒன்று. இதைக் கணிக்கும் பஞ்சாங்கம் பற்றிப் பகுத்தறிவாளர்களுக்கு எப்போதுமே ஒரு இளப்பம் தான்!

சங்க இலக்கியத்தில் நூற்றுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட ஜோதிடக் குறிப்புகள்!

பகுத்தறிவாளர்கள் தமிழன் பண்பாட்டிற்கு ஒவ்வாத ஜோதிடத்தின் பக்கம் போகலாமா என்று கேட்டு இதற்கு எதிராக ‘முழங்கி’ வருவதை எண்ணிப் பார்த்தால் சிரிப்புத் தான் வருகிறது! தமிழர்களின் பாரம்பரியத்தின் படி ஜோதிடம் மகத்தான ஒரு இடத்தை அவர்கள் வாழ்வில் கொண்டிருந்ததை சங்க இலக்கியம் நன்கு விளக்குகிறது.

அஸிரிய, பாபிலோனிய, மாயா, கிரேக்க,எகிப்திய நாகரிகத்தை விடப் பழமையான நாகரிகம் தமிழர் நாகரிகம் என்பது உலக அறிஞர்களால் ஒப்புக் கொள்ளப்பட்ட ஒரு உண்மை! தமிழர்களின் சங்க இலக்கியம் காலத்தால் முற்பட்ட கருத்துக் கருவூலம் என்பதும் அனைவராலும் ஒப்புக்கொள்ளப்பட்ட ஒன்று! இந்த சங்க இலக்கியங்களில் சுமார் 154க்கும் மேற்பட்ட குறிப்புகள் ஜோதிடத்தைப் பற்றி உள்ளன!

கணியன் பூங்குன்றனார் ஒரு சிறந்த ஜோதிட மேதை!

பழந்தமிழில் ஜோதிடம் என்ற வார்த்தை புழக்கத்தில் இல்லை. மாறாகக் கணியம் என்ற சொல் பல இடங்களிலும் பயிலப் படுகிறது. உலகமே இன்று போற்றி வியக்கும் தமிழ்ப் புலவர் கணியன் பூங்குன்றனார் ஒரு சிறந்த ஜோதிடர்; வான நூல் விற்பன்னர். அதனால் தான் அவர் “யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர்; தீதும் நன்றும் பிறர் தர வாரா” என்ற அடிப்படை ஜோதிட உண்மையைக் (அவனவன் கர்மமே அவனுக்கு நன்மையையும் தீமையையும் தருகிறது!) கூறினார்! கணியன் பூங்குன்றனாரை தலை சிறந்த உலகனாகச் சுட்டிக் காட்ட விழையும் பகுத்தறிவாளர்கள் அவர் ஒரு கணியன் என்பதால் ஜோதிடத்தை அங்கீகரிக்க வேண்டிய அவசியம் ஏற்படுகிறது அல்லவா?

நற்றிணை (373.6), காரரும்பு அவிழ்ந்த கணிவாய் வேங்கை என்றும் அகநானூறு (151.15)கணிவாய்ப் பல்லிய காடிறந்தோரே” என்றும் கூறுகின்ற வரிகளால் கணி என்ற வார்த்தை பயிலப்படுவதைப் பார்க்கலாம். கணிப்பது ஜோதிடம்; அதைக் கணிப்பவர் கணி அதாவது ஜோதிடர். இன்றும் கூட நாம் ஜாதகத்தைக் கணித்துத் தாருங்கள் என்று கூறுவதை வழக்கமாகக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம்!

கணிவாய் வேங்கை என்றால் என்ன?

மேலே கண்ட வரியில் வரும் கணிவாய் வேங்கை என்றால் என்ன? வேங்கை பௌர்ணமியன்று தான் பூக்கும்!அந்த தினத்தில் சந்திரன் ரோஹிணி நட்சத்திரத்தைச் சேரும்.ஆகவே அது காதலர் அல்லது புதுமணம் செய்யப் புகும் யுவதியும் வாலிபனும் கடிமணம் செய்து கொள்வதற்கு உகந்த நாளாகத் தமிழரால் கொள்ளப்பட்டது. கணியர் போல (ஜோதிடர் போல) நல்ல நாள் இதுவெனப் பூத்துக் காட்டுவதால் அது கணிவாய் வேங்கை எனச் சொல்லப்பட்டது! பல்லி சொல்வதை கேட்டு நம்பும் பழக்கமும் பழந்தமிழரிடம் பரவலாக இருந்தது!தன்னைப் பிரிந்து இருந்த தலைவன் வருவான் என்பதை பல்லி சொல் கேட்டுத் தலைவி உணர்ந்து கொள்வாள்! இப்படிக் கணித்துச் சொல்வதால் அதுவும் ‘கணிவாய்ப் பல்லி’எனப்பட்டது.

ஜோதிடம் இன்றித் தமிழரின் தொன்மம் இல்லை!

அன்று தமிழரின் வாழ்வில் (ஏன், இன்றும் தான்!) எப்படி ஜோதிடம் முக்கியத்துவம் பெற்றிருந்தது என்பதற்கு இன்னும் ஏராளமான சுவையான செய்திகளைச் சுட்டிக் காட்டலாம் – சங்க இலக்கியத்தின் மூலம்! ஆகவே ஜோதிடத்தை மறுத்தால் தமிழனின் பாரம்பரியமே கேள்விக்குறியாகி விடும்!அவ்வளவு தொன்மம் தமிழர் வாழ்வில் ஜோதிடத்துடன் இணைந்திருப்பது வியப்பூட்டும் ஒரு உண்மை!

நாள்மீனும் விண்மீனும்
அசுவனி முதலாக ரேவதி ஈறாக பெயர் சூட்டப்பட்ட 27 நட்சத்திரங்கள் நாண்மீன்கள் என்றும் பெயர் சூட்டப்பெறாத இதர நட்சத்திரங்கள் விண்மீன்கள் என்றும் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் குறிக்கப் படுகின்றன.

அருந்ததியை புது மணம் புரிந்தோர் பார்ப்பது சம்பிரதாயமாக இருந்தது. அருந்ததியை சங்க இலக்கியம் வடமீன்,செம்மீன்,மீன்,சிறுமீன்,சாலினி,வானத்து அணங்கு எனப் பலவாறாகச் சுட்டிக் காட்டுகிறது! சில சங்க வரிகளைக் கீழே காணலாம்:

சுக்கிரனும் மழையும்

சுக்கிரன் மழை தரும் கிரகமாக தமிழர் தமது ஜோதிட -விஞ்ஞான அறிவால் கண்டுபிடித்திருந்தனர்! அது தெற்குப் பக்கம் ஏகினால் மழை பெய்யாது என்பதை புறநானூறு “இலங்கு கதிர் வெள்ளி தென்புலம் படரினும் அந்தண் காவிரி வந்துசுவர் பூட்ட” என்று அற்புதமாகக் குறிப்பிடுகிறது!இதே கருத்தை புறநானூற்றின் மேலும் ஐந்து பாடல்கள் வலியுறுத்துகின்றன! Tamil’s Strong Belief in Astrology

Sangam Tamil literature in its 2389 poems sung by 461 poets give us voluminous information about their beliefs in supernatural and paranormal things. All these poets lived in the first three centuries of modern era. They believed in different types of predictions. Though they have some specialised techniques to read the future of any person, most of them are same like North India. This not only debunks the Aryan – Dravidian Racist theory, but also belies the atheist propaganda about an ancient rationalist Tamil society.

Tamil literature has got encyclopaedic information on astrology. For want of space, I give below some of the popular beliefs: this is not an exhaustive list—

The oldest Tamil book Tolkappiam mentions that the Royal umbrella and the Royal sword should be moved in the direction of travel on an auspicious day. Tamil weddings took place on the day of Rohini’s (Star Aldebaran) alignment with the moon (Agam 86 and 136). What Tolkappiar said nearly 2000 years ago is still followed by the Hindus. If they book plane tickets for some auspicious functions such as weddings abroad and the travel date is not auspicious, they simply move their luggage to the next door or a neighbour or do a Puja at an auspicious time .

Meteor
Meteors: Kudalur Kizar (Puram 229) described the effect of a meteor he and his colleagues saw in the sky. They predicted that the Chera King Mantharan Ceral Irumporai would die in seven days time and it came true.

Venus
The connection between Venus and Rain are seen in many of the Sangam verses:– Puram 117 by Kapilar, Puram. 35,41,384, 385,386, 388, 390, 398; Maduraikanchi Lines 106-109; Pattinappalai 1and 2. Depending upon the movement or position of the planet they predicted floods and drought. This is a new field for research. Modern scientists or astronomers have not yet found any link between rain and Venus. But Tamil and Sanskrit books are very clear about this link. Future research would prove that the Hindus are the first to discover this link.

Zodiac signs
Lot of people suspected Greek influence in Indian astronomy. For instance the 12 zodiac signs did not exist in Indian astrology before the Greek occupation of North West India, they say. Hindus divided the path of moon in the sky into 27 constellations from the Vedic days. But ‘’Nedunal Vadai’’ (lines 160–161 ) sung by Nakkirar and Pura. 229 by Kudalur Kizar mention Mesha Rasi (Aries).

I doubt about Hindus borrowing these signs from the Greek. If we believe that Nakkirar and other 460 Sangam poets lived in the first three centuries of modern era, the Greek knowledge would not have spread that fast to Tamil Nadu from the North Western corners of India or Tamil’s direct contacts with the Yavanas. It will take hundreds of years to absorb foreign ideas and use them in popular poetry. Sometimes people start using certain terms in certain ages. This doesn’t mean that they learnt it late from other sources. Lord Ganesh is not mentioned by any Sangam poet or Manikkavasagar. Inspite of their knowledge about Lord Siva, the word SIVA was not used by any of the Sangam poets. So I will take all these as trends in literature.

Israel Stamps onZodiac signs

27 Stars
Amazing thing about the Tamil astronomy is that they have lot of pure Tamil names for 27 stars in the sky, even during Sangam period. Star Anuradha is called Mudapanaiyam (stunted Palmyra tree) and Punarvasu a Kadaikulam (Pond). We don’t know why they named the stars so. But we know the same star clusters are seen by different cultures as different shapes. For instance, what we see as Saptarishi Mandalam (seven sages) is seen as Ursa Major (Great Bear) by the Greeks. Other cultures described it as a kite, a chariot etc.
Tamils must have observed the stars from very early times which is known from the way they named the star clusters/ constellations. At the same time they did not hesitate to use the Sanskrit words in Tamilized form as well. Kudalur Kizar in Puram.229 used the words Panguni (falguna), Uusi (Udichyai for North in Sanskrit), Paasi (Prachyai for East) etc.

Like their northern counterparts Tamils also worshipped the Saptarishi/Seven Stars, Arundhati (alcor)and Pole Star. All these are referred to in Sangam poems.

Eclipse
Eclipse: Though ancient Hindus knew very well that the eclipses are caused by the shadows of earth and moon, they told the laymen a story about a snake devouring the sun and the moon. Tamils also reflected this Puranic story in their ancient verses. (Puram 260, Agam 114 & 313. They have calculated the days of eclipse well in advance.

Bird signs
Details are in the verses of Puram. 204, 124, 68,41.

Lizards
The sound made by the lizards served as omens for the Tamils. Kavan mullai putanar says,” the lizard on the Kalli tree makes its characteristic tickling sound and is taken as predicting the events to the wayfarers (Agam 151). Another poet says that the travellers paused a while hearing the tickling sound of the lizard (Agam 387). Even wild animals followed lizard sounds! A boar was just about to enter a millet field, but it went back on hearing the tickling sound of the lizard (Agam 186).

Comets

Comets: Like any ancient community Tamils were also afraid of the comets. They used the Sanskrit word ( Dhuma ketu) and Tamil word (Pukai Kodi) for it. Reference: Puram 117. Also in post- Sangam Tamil epic Manimekalai 6-64, 7-74, Silappadikaram 10-102

Extinct Astrology
Virichi (Mullaippaattu 6-11,Pura 280), Unnam (Pathirrupathu 7th decad), Dark Bird Karik Kuruvi, Kurathi, Veri Atal are special techniques used by the Tamils to find about good and bad that is going to happen. The techniques are almost extinct now.

Virichi is hearing good or auspicious words before embarking on a task. Maravars sought Virichi before entering another country to ‘capture’ the cattle. This was the first step in waging a war. Tolkappiar also mentioned it.
Unnam is a tree. If it is very green it is considered positive and good. If it is wilted it is no good.
Veri Aatal is asking about the impending wedding of a daughter from a fortune teller. Sometimes the girls who had clandestine love affair were laughing at their mothers secretly about the futility of the task.

Nadi Jothidam
No reference of Nadi Jothidam is available in Sangam Literature: But it is prevalent from the olden days. It is about giving predictions with the help of old palm leaf manuscripts in which already one’s life predictions are written by the sages in verse form.
