In Boston, the famous tenor Beniamino Gigli was singing ‘Faust’. The
stage of the Boston Opera House was not adequately equipped as that of the
Metropolitan. There was a trap door which sank down in order that
Mephistopheles might conduct Faust to Hell. As Gigli stepped on this and began
to sink, something went wrong and he became struck midway and could not get any
further, though he made every effort to squeeze through. In the midst of the
predicament which was now clearly evident to all the audience, the voice of a
slightly inebriated Irishman roared from the top gallery,
“Thank God. I am safe at last! Hell is full!”

ONE MAN AUDIENCE
Brahm’s kindness often revealed a finely imaginative quality. During his
concert in Hungary with Joachim, the audience one evening consisted of a
solitary man. The violinist was all for giving him back his money and closing
before the start.
“No, said Brahms, our unique partisan does not deserve such disrespect.
Let us go on with the program”. So they began, and soon were enthusiastically
playing whatever their fortunate solo audience suggested.

JUNK ORCHESTRA AND WHITE FLAG!
A story is told by Deems Taylor about the first performance in Carnegie
Hal of the extremely modernistic Ballet Mechanique, by George Antheil. The
composition may be classed as an extreme of extremes; and among unorthodox
instruments augmenting the orchestra were ten grand pianos, six xylophones, a
player piano, fire alarm siren, an airplane propeller and several automobile
klaxons.
The audience, which had been attentive and quiet previously, began to
fidget after the start of the music. The general excitement and consternation
mounted, until finally, after eight minutes of the composition, a man in one of
the front rows raised a white handkerchief tied to his cane. Where upon the
entire audience burst into laughter.

William Blake, English mystic, poet and artist, said
I write when commanded by the spirits, and the moment I have
written I see the words fly about the room in all directions. It is then
published and the spirits can read. My manuscripts are of no further use I have
been tempted to burn my manuscripts, but my wife wont let me.

Shakespeare Imitation!
At the Garrick Club in London the witty librettist W S Gilbert was once making light of Shakespeare, to the horror of most of those surrounding him. All right, then, said Gilbert in answer to their protests, Let us take this passage for example I would as lief be thrust through a quickest hedge, As cry Plosh, to a callow throstle
Why that is perfectly clear, insisted one of his hearers, rising to the defence of the bard. It just means this bird lover would rather get himself all scratched up in the thorny bush than disturb the birds song. What play is the passage from? No play, said Gilbert, I made it up — and jolly good Shakespeare too.

Proof Reading !
On the subject of proof reading some authors are a menace to their publishers, While others suffer from legitimate grievances. In one such instance the author , Ward Dorance, wrote to his publishers on the subject of proofs of his book, In all the proof that has reached me windrow has been spelt Window, if, in ,the bound book windrow still appears as window, then neither rain nor hail, nor gloom of night nor fleets of riot squads will prevent me from assassinating the man who is responsible. If the coward hides beyond my finding, I shall step into Scribner’s and merely shoot up the place, Southern style

Thomas Hardy
The import of Thomas Hardy’s birth was so little appreciated
that he was thrown aside for dead. Presently he must have been so in fact, had
not the nurse glancing up from attending the mother, cried out suddenly,
Dead! Stop a minute. He is alive enough sure!

Shaw’s Friends did not like him!
When George Bernard Shaw , as a young man, emerged from his native Ireland and moved to England he began writing a column for a London weekly publication. At that time Oscar Wilde was enjoying his vogue as a wit and epigram maker. One evening an acquaintance, calling upon Wilde, happened upon a copy of the paper to which Shaw was a contributor and reading therein one of Shaw’s characteristic articles which was signed with the authors initials, said to his host, I say, Wilde, who is this chap G B S, who is doing a department for this sheet?
He is a young Irishman named Shaw, said Wilde. Rather forceful, isn’t he? Forceful, echoed the other, well, rather! My word, how he does cut and slash! He doesn’t seem to spare anyone he knows. I should say he is in a fairway to make himself a lot of enemies.
Well, said Wilde, as yet he has not become prominent enough to have enemies. But none of his friends like him.

Soon after Goldsmith’s death, some people dining with Dr Johnson were commenting freely on some parts of Goldsmith’s work , which in their opinion showed neither talent nor originality . To this Dr Johnson listened for some time, when at length his patience being exhausted he arose with great dignity, looked them full in their face, and exclaimed, If nobody were allowed to abuse poor Goldsmith but those who could write as well, he would have few censors.

WARBURTON
Goldsmith and Johnson onetime had an argument on
the merits of Warburton, the writer. Goldsmith asserted that Warburton was weak
writer. Dr Johnson refuted this saying.

weak; he flounders well.

B B BETTER……….
Barry Cornwall tells how he once said something
in Lambs presence which he thought possessed some smartness.
Lamb commended him with a stammer ,
Very well, my dear boy, very well. Ben ( taking
a pinch of snuff). Ben Johnson has said worse than that, and b b b better.
