There is a satirical couplet in Sanskrit, mocking at the misers:

Krupana iva daataa na bhuuto na bhavishayati

Na buncanneva sarvasvam parasmai sah pradaasyati

There was neither a philanthropist in the past nor there will be one in in the future like the misers. They don’t even eat and leave all theirs to others.

It is true indeed that they don’t spend anything for themselves and after their death, all their wealth go to others.

Arecanut-Cultivation

Picture of Areca nut tree

People are of Three Tree Types!

He gives twice who gives quickly – is a proverb.

A Tamil poem also says that there is nothing wrong to say ‘No’ if one doesn’t have money to donate; but it is the habit of low lives to dodge and refuse to give at the end (Naladiyar poem)

Another Tamil verse compares people who prevent other people from giving to a fruit tree surrounded by thorny bush. Here the fruit tree stands for the philanthropists and the thorny bush to the bad people who prevent the good people from donating. (Neethineri Venba)

The same poet divides people into three categories:

Palmyra Tree people:

The first category is like the Palmyra tree; they give like Palmyra trees; i.e the Palmyra trees give fruits even without we watering it.

The second category of people is like the Coconut trees. You have to water the coconut trees now and then to get good yields.

The third category of people is like areca nut trees. Unless you water it constantly the trees wont yield you any fruits. People at the lowest level will help you only when you help them.

There was a shepherd in a remote corner of Iran. In those days the country was called Persia. He was very simple and spent all his time happily in shepherding. He just wore a tattered sheep skin. But he was extraordinarily brilliant. He was a great scholar who looked like a beautiful lotus in a muddy pond or like shiny a gem stone in the middle of barren rocks. He can be compared to Emperor Vikramaditya, the great wise king of India. Like Vikramaditya he knew the language of the birds and animals. He gave advice to anyone who came to him.

Slowly he was made the leader of the people living in that area. When his name and fame spread to the capital, the king also came to know about him. He was wondering whether the people simply exaggerate or there is some truth in the story. So he decided to meet in but in disguise. One day he set out to the cave in the far corner of his country dressed like a poor man in rags. He rode an old horse. His ministers also followed him disguised as travellers.

As soon as they came near the cave, they were received with all the hospitality. The shepherd gave them milk and cheese. Slowly they got involved in discussion on various topics. The king asked him who his master was. He told the king that he learnt all himself. Answering a question of the disguised king, he suddenly addressed him Oh! King!.

The king was surprised and asked him how come he knew that he was the king of Persia. He told him that his behaviour, voice, stance, look and the knowledge showed him that he must be a great king. Now the king was really impressed told him his knowledge shouldn’t be wasted and gave him the post of state governor. The shepherd accepted his offer.

sheep cycle field

Years rolled on. The governor turned shepherd was going to all the places with locked box. People were wondering what it contained and why he was holding it all the times. Slowly rumours were spread by jealous people. They said that he was stealing the money of the king or he may be pocketing the taxes or he may be accepting bribes and keeping them in the locked box. The rumour reached the ears of the king who rushed to his place.

As and when the king saw the locked box with him he became very angry and shouted at him and ordered him to open the box. He maintained his composure and quietly opened the box. All were eagerly waiting for that moment. People were imagining all the worst that could happen to the poor shepherd governor. But to their disappointment there was only his old sheep skin. Before any one asked him the reason for keeping it in a tightly locked box, he explained: “I don’t want to become arrogant and forget my humble past. I was happy being a shepherd, dressed with this simple sheep skin. I always wanted to remember my past.”

The king was more impressed now and offered him a bigger role of ruling a big region. Did he accept it?

There are two ends for the story:

1.He said ‘No’. He told the king that he was happy going back to his previous shepherding which kept him happy for ever.

  1. He said ‘Yes’. He became the ruler of a bigger are and became more famous.

smarmy salesman

I am them!

The executive was taken down a peg.
You may well feel proud of yourself, young fellow, he said to the life insurance agent, I have refused to see seven insurance agents today.
I know, said the agent, I am them.

Taking Orders!
The sales manager was delivering a terrible dressing down to one of his salesmen. He became so abusive in his anger that the culprit protested, saying,

“Don’t talk to me that way. I take ORDERS from no one”.
“That is what I am raising Hell about”, snapped the manager.

Bed Bugs!!!
In one of his political speeches in the early days of the NRA (National Recovery Administration), Hugh ‘Ironpants’ Johnson revived an old story, demonstrating the usual futility of letters of complaint.
It concerns the case of the man who was tormented by bedbugs in his sleeping car and who wrote an indignant letter about the matter to the general passenger agent of the railroad.

He was cautioned by his friends that he would probably not receive so much as a reply, and his satisfaction was great when, in due course, he received an apologetic letter assuring him that such a thing could never happen again. His elation was quashed a moment later, however, by the discovery of the inter office memo which had inadvertently been inserted with the letter, which said tersely, “Send this s.o.b. the bug letter”.

Competition
A young and conscientious fellow ran a newsstand in front of a bank. One day a friend of his stopped by and asked him a loan of five dollars.

“Sorry”, said the young man, “I am afraid I couldn’t do that. You see I have an agreement with the bank”.
“You…… An agreement with the bank. What do you mean?”
“Well, you see, it is this way.
I don’t give loans. The bank doesn’t sell newspapers. It’s a perfect agreement. I am sorry, but I am bound”.

1).Evidence
Justice John M.Harlan once explained the intricacies of evidence to a young man. Usually in conflicting evidence one statement is far more probable than the other, so that we can easily decide easily which to believe. It is like the boy and the house hunter.

A house hunter getting off the train at a suburban station, said to a lad
“My boy, I am looking for Mr Smithson’s new block of semi-detached cottages. How far are they from here?”
“About twenty minutes’ walk from here”, the boy replied.
“Twenty minutes! Exclaimed the house hunter, nonsense, the advertisement says five.”
“Well”, said the boy, “you can believe me or the advertisement, but I am not trying to make a sale”.

Xxx

2).Eskimo pies (Chocolate coated Ice Cream)

In a case tried by the famous criminal lawyer, Samuel Leibowitz, the determining evidence was that of an alleged eye witness to the crime , one Brecht, who claimed to have been at the scene in the legitimate capacity of a seller of Eskimo pies.

Shortly after this testimony had been given, Leibowitz sent out and had brought into him some twenty Eskimo Pies, which he blandly distributed to the judge, the jury men, and others before the bar. The ice cream was eaten with appreciation and pleasure by all in the presence of the witness, who, still on the stand, was unaware of the significance of what was going on. By his failure to identify the objects being eaten, their wrappers, and his inability to explain how the pies had been kept from melting when he was selling them, Leibowitz proved the perjury and fraudulent pretensions of the witness and won the case.

Xxx

3).Witness Anecdotes
Two friendly enemies were involved in a lawsuit. The issue at stake was small, but each was determined to win. The day of the trial arrived. Mr Johnson, the party of the first part, came into the courtroom surrounded by a covey of witnesses for his side of the case.

A few minutes later, Logan, the other man involved, entered. Looking about, he spied Johnson with the witnesses.

Good Lord, Johnson, are these your witnesses?
They certainly are.
Well, in that case, I give up. You win! I have used these witnesses twice myself.

Xxx

london-haven-pickpockets

4).Professional Pickpocket!

It is extraordinary to watch the occasional results of the fact that the prisoner before the bar is concerned only and strictly with the question of his guilt on the count charged and none other.

A peculiarly brazen piece of testimony was once given by a defendant under the charge of Samuel Leibowitz. The issue at stake was the question of a frame up. The great criminal lawyer was frank in his examination of the witness as Toni’s general character.

He questioned him thus:
What is your occupation?
Professional pickpocket
How long have you been a professional pickpocket?
Twenty four years.
If acquitted in this case, what will your occupation be in the future?
Professional pickpocket
He was acquitted.

IGNORANCE: Sexy Simile of Tamil Poet Valluvan! (Post No.2778)

It is very interesting to read the similes that were used by Tiruvaluvar, the author of Tamil Veda, ‘Tirukkural’. On the topic ignorance, he gives good similes.

Let us first look at Vyasa’s sloka on ignorance:-

There is a beautiful couplet/sloka in Mahabharata on ignorance. According to Vyasa, ignorance is the only enemy to mankind.

“There is only one enemy of men and not another; the foe is identified with ignorance. Overwhelmed by it, one is led to perpetrate acts that are frightful and cruel.”

Ekasatrurna dvitiyo assti satrurajnaanatulayah purusashya raajan

Yenaavrutah kurute samprayuktah ghoraani karmaani sudaarunaani

–Mahabharata, santi parva 297-28

Simile 1

Valluvan says, in the chapter titled ‘Ignorance’:

“The unlettered man aspiring to speak is like a lady without her two breasts courting love” – Kural 402

Politicians Orators

Hitler stamp12

Dr S M Diaz in his English commentary on this couplet says, “A person of no learning wanting to display his knowledge and skill to an assembly of learned men, would be like the joyless  emptiness attendant on a woman, without both her breasts and femininity, seeking the fullness of love. One of the ten old commentators, Paridhi, adds “falling for the empty words uttered by an ignorant person is like falling in love with a breast less woman. This implies that there are some speakers, who captivate unthinking persons, with just words with no meaning or underlying ideas. Many of the latter day politicians, who make attractive, alliterative speeches, of all words and no deep sense, would belong to this category. In a discerning society, they cannot continue hoodwinking all the people all the time. At some stage their ignorance will get exposed.

A fool’s mouth is his own destruction (Proverbs 18-7)

Simile 2

There is another simile of gambling board:

“To speak in an assembly without a wide knowledge of books is like throwing dice on a board without chequers” – Kural 401

Simile 3

“Men without learning are like worthless barren lands. Nothing more can be said of them than they exist.” ” – Kural 406

Simile 4

“The pomp of a person without deep and subtle knowledge is like the fine painting on a clay doll” – Kural 407

Simile 5

“In relation to them that have studied noble books, others are like beasts in relation to men” – Kural 410

Suddenly Valluvan has become a Kalidasa in using similes! All are beautiful and appropriate similes; no exaggeration.

We may compare these with some popular proverbs on ignorance:

1.Ignorance is the night of the mind (Chinese proverb)

2.There is no blindness like ignorance.

3.Thedevil never assails a man except he find him either void of  knowledge or  of the fear  of god.

4.Scinece has no enemy but the ignorant.

5.Art has no enemy but ignorance

6.If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

Finally,

An ancient saying from the Middle East says:

He who knows not, and knows not that he knows not, is a fool. Shun him.
He who knows not, and knows that he knows not, is simple. Teach him.
He who knows, and knows not he knows, is asleep. Wake him.
He who knows, and knows that he knows is wise. Follow him.

Hindu scriptures are not against violence; they support violence where it is necessary. When it comes to protecting countries and governments, war was part of their life. The biggest job provider in the ancient world was the war and weapon industry. It is true with the modern world as well. At any one time 50 conflicts are going on in different parts of the world. The Western Governments love wars. Their biggest income come from arms sale. They are the mainstay of all the terrorist movements. Big arms fairs are held in London and other parts of the world, where the terrorists and developing countries procure weapons in benami/proxy names. So we can laugh at them when they speak of world peace and non-violence.

Western Governments ‘invent’ human rights violations of other countries if they don’t provide them oil/petrol or don’t do business with them. They have no moral issues in wars. They want their products to be sold. Doctors flourish when there are more diseases; lawyers flourish when there are more criminal activities; Western Governments survive only through their arms sales and conflicts between nations. If there is peace, then they wont have the BIG POWER status! They will justify any violence like Iraq War, Vietnam War, nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan and killing millions of innocent Buddhists. Their propaganda machinery such as ABC, BBC, CBC etc. will help them to justify all their immoral activities. With the communist governments, they openly support violence unlike the covert activities of Western Governments.

All Hindu gods and goddesses hold weapons; they are there to punish the evil doers. They never attack anyone on their own. If there is violence from the demons and devils, they kill them. It is also symbolic in many cases; there the demons or devils symbolise evil thought in human beings.

So we have to look at any violence in this background; the violence advocated by the Tamil and Sanskrit scriptures is of different kind. They support violence only against the evil people. We can easily see the difference between the actual criminals and the ‘invented’ criminals of the Western countries.

Ambhasi nivestavya: To be drowned in ocean

Mahabharata says,
Dvaambhasi nivestavyau gale badhwaa drutaam silaam
Dhanavantamadaataaram daridram caatapasvinam
—Udyoga parva 33.60

Drown the following two kinds of people in the ocean:

1.Adaataa Chanukah
Richman who doesn’t give
2.Atapasvi daridra
Poor man who is not devout

From Tamil Literature
Tamil poet Tiruvalluvar also says,

“The mean will not shake off what sticks to their hands to any but those who would break their jaws with their clenched fists!” (Tirukkural 1077)

That is the misers have no heart, no compassion; they will give only when their hands are twisted and jaws are broken with a good punch.

“At a mere word the good melt; but the mean, like the sugarcane, yield only under pressure” (Tirukkural 1078)

That is the misers have to be actually crushed physically to get something out of them.

In another couplet, Valluvar advocated also death penalty for the murderers. He compared the murderers as weeds in the field. Capital punishment for grievous offences is like the weeding of fields, necessary for protecting the food crops.

“The king gives capital punishment to wicked killers like removing weeds from flourishing fields” (Tirukkural 550)

Sanskrit law books such as Manu smrti and Sukra neeti also support capital punishment.
