Every year we hear a debate, sometimes becoming a raging controversy, whether we can celebrate English New Year or not on 1st January. Actually there is more ‘Hinduism’ in English New Year than any other religion.

So please celebrate Hindu New Year on First January! But it should be a ‘no drinks’, no ‘hanky-panky’ celebration.

Calendars have been changed continuously from the dawn of history. Hindus have more calendar systems than any other culture in the world. The whole world is celebrating New Year based on one or the other of the Hindu calendars. Most of the countries follow either a New Year calendar as March or April as the first month.

 

January Ganapathy! Ganapathy January!!

 

January, the first month of English calendar is named after Lord Ganesh. Romans called Ganesh as Janus and worshipped him for 800 years between 400 BCE and 400 CE. Anyone who reads about Janus will find it is nothing but the corruption of Hindu God Ganesh! J and G are interchangeable.

 

Here are the similarities:

1.Romans worshipped him with two faces facing opposite direction, looking at future and past

2.They installed Janus temples on road sides, entrances and gates.

3.They named the first month after him.

 

4.Janus is connected with war.

 

5.Janus temples were constructed in square shapes.

All these are based on Hindu beliefs. Hindus begin any work with the worship of Ganesh. That is why Romans made it as the first month after calendar reformation.

Hindus install Ganesh at the gates or entrances of the temples. Most of the Tamil Ganesh temples are on road sides and in square shaped buildings or platforms. Ganesh is in charge of our future and that is why he is worshipped first. Bhuta Ganas under the leadership of Ganesh serve the army of Lord Shiva.

 

Romans had Janus temples all over Italy and Nero and other kings issued coins with Janus temples pictures. Even today Janus is displayed in all the museums from Vatican to Louvre. Romans had a city in the name of Janus, ‘Janiculum’ on the banks of River Tiber. Even today, Hindus install Ganesh under a tree mostly on river banks.

So the reformed English calendar is actually Hindu calendar.

January 9th was celebrated as the Birth day of Janus/Ganesh in Italy 2000 years ago!

So we can even sing a Bhajan song in the name of January!

Hindu Sanskrit Months in English!

Sapta = 7= September

Ashta = 8 = October

Nava = 9 = November

Dasa = 10 = December

 

Sanskrit words for 7, 8, 9, 10 are still used in the names of English months. The entire world was following Hindu calendar beginning in March at one time and so the names for 7,8,9, 10 for September, October, November and December. The latest calendar was called Julian calendar after his reformation. Romans also made lot of changes in the calendar naming certain months after the Roman emperors Julius (July) and Augustus (August) Caesars.

So long as we have these months we will be remembering the Sanskrit numbers.

Even today the Saka year of the Government of India begins around March.

Hindus followed both solar (Tamil, Singhalese, Nepalese, Bengalis, South East Asian countries) and Lunar ( National year, Telugus, Kannadigas etc) calendars. Since it was the largest country in the ancient world each king or region followed different systems.

 

Hinduism is a religion which will digest everything alien to it and absorb or adapt it to suit it. Tamils have started going to temples like Tirupati, Tiruttani, Palani etc on Pada Yatra ( by foot ) on the English New Year day. This is a typical example how Hindus take everything to their advantage.

 

Muslim and Christian invaders were so ruthless and killed several thousand before converting them to their religion. They converted the whole of South America and most of Africa. But they could not do such a thing in India even after 1000 years! This is the secret of adaptation and absorption. Hindu religion is an ever changing religion. But it will never sacrifice its basic values such as Truth, Peace, Love, Kindness, Charity, fear of God, Respect for culture, Respect for Elders etc. They don’t bother about superficial forms. They digested and absorbed all that is good from the Greeks, Romans, Sakas and Huns. They boldly adapted certain systems from the Christians and Muslims. The world also took all that is useful from the Hindus such as the numbers, value of zero, domestication of cow and horse etc. Without these Hindu contributions the world would never have seen computers or space rockets! Or a civilization.

ஆங்கிலப் புத்தாண்டை ஏன் கொண்டாட வேண்டும்?

ஏனெனில்,அதைக் கொண்டாடும்வரை சம்ஸ்கிருதம் வாழும். இந்துமதம் வாழும். அது எப்படி?

 

கணபதி=ஜனவரி; ஜனவரி=கணபதி!!

நீங்கள் ஒரு பஜனைப் பாடலே பாடலாம்!

கணபதி=ஜனவரி; ஜனவரி=கணபதி! பாஹிமாம்!

ஜனவரி=கணபதி!! கணபதி=ஜனவரி!! ரக்ஷமாம்!!

 

ஏனெனில் ஜனவரி என்ற மாதப் பெயர் ‘ஜேனஸ்’ என்ற ரோமானிய கடவுள் பெயரிலிருந்து வந்தது என்பர். உண்மையில் ‘ஜேனஸ்’ என்பது ‘கணேஷ்’ என்பதன் திரிபு!

ஜேனஸ்=கணேஸ் யார்?

ஜேனஸ் என்ற ரோம் நகர தெய்வத்துக்கு இரண்டு முகங்கள்: ஒன்று கடந்த காலத்தைப் பார்க்கும்; மற்றொன்று எதிர்காலத்தைப் பார்க்கும். இதை வாசல்படிகளில், நுழைவாயில்களில் வைப்பர். நமது இந்துக் கோவில்களில் நுழைவாயிலில் கணபதி/கணேஷ் இருப்பதைப் பார்த்தே அவர்களும் இப்படி வைத்தனர்.

 

மேலும் இந்துக்கள் எல்லா காரியங்களையும் துவங்குவதற்கு முன் கணேஷை வணங்குவர். ஆகவே அவர்களும் ஜனவரியை ஆண்டுக்கு முதல் மாதமாக வைத்தனர். ஆகையால் இது ஆங்கிலப் புத்தாண்டு இல்லை. இந்துப் புத்தாண்டே!

 

ரோமானியர்கள் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் ஜனவரி 9ஆம் தேதி கணேஷ் சதுர்த்தி கொண்டாடினர். இன்றைக்கு அல்ல. 2000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு!

ஜேனஸ் கோவில்கள் கி.மு.400 முதல் கி.பி.400 வரை 800 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு இத்தாலி முழுதும் இருந்தன. அவருடைய கோவில்கள் சதுர வடிவில் – 4 பருவங்களைக் குறிக்க—அமைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தன. இதையும் இந்துக்களைப் பார்த்தே செய்தனர். கணபதியின் தனிக் கோவில்கள் தமிழ்நாடு முழுதும் சதுர வடிவிலே இருக்கும்.

 

இத்தாலியில், டைபர் நதிக்கரையில் ஜனிகுலம் என்ற இடத்தில் கணபதி நகரமே அமைக்கப்பட்டது!

 

ஜேனஸ் கையில் ஒரு சாவியும் மற்றொரு கையில் ஒரு தண்டமும் இருக்கும். நாம் அங்குசம், பாசக் கயிற்றைக் கைகளில் காட்டினோம். அவர்கள் சிறிது மாற்றி வைத்தனர். ஜேனஸுக்கும், போருக்கும் தொடர்பு உண்டு. இந்து புராணக் கதைகளிலும் அவர்தான் பூதகணத் தலைவர்.

கணபதி கோவில்களை சாலை ஓரங்களிலும் ரோமானியர் கட்டினர். இன்றும் தமிழ் நாட்டின் சாலை ஓரங்களில் கணபதியைக் காணலாம். இதையெல்லாம் பார்க்கும்போது தமிழ் நாட்டிலிருந்துதான் ரோமுக்கு இவர் போனாரோ என்று என்ன வேண்டியிருக்கிறது. ஆனால் தமிழ்நாட்டிலுள்ள பிள்ளையார்பட்டி, திருப்பரங்குன்ற குகையிலுள்ள பிள்ளையார் சிற்பங்கள் ரோமானிய ஆட்சியின் வீழ்ச்சிக்குப் பின்னால் எழுந்தவை.

அஷ்ட- ஓபர்= அக்டோபர்= 8

முன்காலத்தில் மார்ச் மாதம்தான் ஆண்டின் முதல் மாதம். பின்னால் வந்தவர்கள் இதை மாற்றி வைத்தனர். அதற்கும் பின்னர், ஜூலியன் என்ற போப்பாண்டவர் இன்னும் சில காலண்டர் சீர்திருத்தங்களைச் செய்தார். மார்ச் மாதம் முத்லாவது மாதம் என்றால் சப்த, அஷ்ட, நவ, தச= 7,8,9,10 என்பது பொருந்தும். ஆகவே இதுவும் இந்து ஆண்டே. இன்றும் இந்தியவின் தேசிய வருடமான சக வருடம் (தெலுங்கு, கன்னட, மகாராஷ்டிர புத்தாண்டு) மார்ச் மாதத்தை ஒட்டியே துவங்கும். அதுதான் நமது உண்மையான புத்தாண்டு. ஆனால் தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு சூரிய இயக்கத்தின் (சோலார்) அடிப்படையிலும், மற்ற இந்திய புத்தாண்டுகள் சந்திர இயக்க (லூனார்) அடிப்படையிலும் அமைந்தன. ஆகவே இரண்டும் சரியே.

ஆக ஆங்கிலப் புத்தாண்டு ஆங்கிலப் புத்தாண்டல்ல. இந்துப் புத்தாண்டே!! அது வாழும் வரை சம்ஸ்கிருத எண்கள் நினைவில் நிற்கும்.

 

மேலும் இந்துமதம் எதையும் ஜீரணம் செய்துவிடும். ஆங்கிலப் புத்தாண்டன்று பலர், திருத்தணி, பழநி, திருப்பதிக்குப் பாதயாத்திரை செல்வது பெரிய இயக்கமாக வளர்ந்து வருகிறது. சகரர், ஹூணர், கிரேக்கர், முஸ்லீம்கள், கிறிஸ்தவர்களை ஜீரணம் செய்த நாடு பாரதம். அகாவே இந்து மதம் எதையும் ஜீரண செய்து தனதாக்கிக் கொண்டுவிடும். அஞ்சற்க.

உலகில் கிறிஸ்தவ, முஸ்லீம் படையெடுப்பாளர்கள் சென்ற அவ்வளவு நாடுகளும் அவர்கள் மயமாய்விட்டன. தென் அமெரிக்கா முழுவதையும் ஸ்பானியர்களும் போர்ச்சுகீசியர்களும், ரோமன் கத்தோலிக்க நாடுகளாக்கினர். ஆப்ரிக்க நாடுகளை முஸ்லீகளும் கிறிஸ்தவர்களும் தமதாக்கினர். அனல் இந்தியாவில் “ஆயிரம் ஆண்டு அன்பிலா அந்நியர் ஆட்சி”க்கும் (பாரதியாரின் வரி) பின்னர், பத்து சதவீதமே மதம் மாற்றப்பட்டனர். அவர்களும் பெரும்பாலும் நம்பிக்கையிலும், கலாசாரத்திலும் இந்துக்களே!

முஸ்லீம் அன்பரின் சந்தேகம்

திருவண்ணாமலையில் அருளாட்சி செய்து கொண்டிருந்த ரமண மஹரிஷியை அணுகி தங்கள் சந்தேகங்களைப் போக்கிக் கொண்ட அன்பர்கள் ஏராளம். பெரும்பாலும் மௌனத்தையே பாஷையாகக் கொண்டு வந்திருந்தோரின் மனதில் சந்தேக விளக்கம் தானாகவே கிடைக்கும் படி அருள் பாலிப்பது அவர் வழக்கம். சில சமயம் வந்திருந்திருப்பவரின் பக்குவத்திற்கேற்ப பதிலை அருள்வதும் உண்டு.

ஒரு நாள் இரண்டு முஸ்லீம் அன்பர்கள் அவரை நாடி வந்தனர். அவர்களுக்கு உருவ வழிபாடு பற்றி சந்தேகம் இருந்தது.

பக்தர்: கடவுளுக்கு உருவம் உண்டா?

மஹரிஷி: அப்படி என்று யார் சொன்னது?

பக்தர்: அப்படி என்றால், கடவுளுக்கு உருவம் இல்லை என்றால், சிலைகளைக் கும்பிடுவது சரியா?

மஹரிஷி: கடவுளை விட்டு விடுவோம். ஏனென்றால் அவர் யாருக்கும் பிடிபடாதவர். உங்களை எடுத்துக் கொள்வோம். உங்களுக்கு உருவம் உண்டா?

பக்தர்: ஆம், எனக்கு உருவம் உண்டு; பெயர் உண்டு.

மஹரிஷி: அப்படி என்றால் உடல் அங்கங்களைக் கொண்ட ஒரு மனிதர் நீங்கள். ஆறடி உயரம், தாடி கொண்டவர். சரி தானே!

பக்தர்: நிச்சயமாக அப்படித்தான்!

மஹரிஷி: சரி, அப்படியானால் தூங்கும் போது உங்களை நீங்கள் காண்கிறீர்களா?

பக்தர்: விழித்து எழுந்தவுடன் நான் தூங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்திருக்கிறேன் என்பது தெரிகிறது. ஆகவே, அநுமானத்தின் மூலமாக நான் இப்படி ஆழ்ந்த உறக்கத்தில் இருந்திருக்கிறேன் என்பது தெரிய வருகிறது.

மஹரிஷி: நீங்கள் உடல் தான் என்றால் இறந்த பிறகு சவத்தை ஏன் புதைக்க வேண்டும்? உடல் தன்னைப் புதைப்பதை எதிர்க்க அல்லவா வேண்டும்?

பக்தர்: இல்லை, நான் பரு உடலில் உள்ளே இருக்கின்ற உள்ளுறை ஜீவன்.

மஹரிஷி: ஓ! அப்படி என்றால் உண்மையிலேயே நீங்கள் உருவம் இல்லாதவர் என்றாகிறது. ஆனால் இப்போது  உடல் மூலமாக உங்களை அடையாளம் கண்டு சொல்கிறீர்கள். இப்படி உடலுடன் இருக்கும் போது அடையாளம் காணும் நீங்கள், உருவம் இல்லாத கடவுளை உருவமாகக் காண்பதில் என்ன தவறு இருக்கிறது?

கேள்வி கேட்டவர் திகைத்து விட்டார்.

ஓர் நாமம் ஒருருவம் இல்லார்க்கு ஆயிரம் திருநாமம் பாடித் தெள்ளேணம் கொட்டோமோ என்பது அருளாளர் வாக்கு.

உருவமுமாகி அருவமுமாகி அதையும் கடந்தவனாகி இருப்பவன் இறைவன்.

மஹரிஷியின் அருள்வாக்கின் மூலமாக அனைவரும் உருவ வழிபாடு பற்றிய உண்மையை அறிந்தனர்.

சையத் உணர்ந்த சமத்துவம்

டாக்டர் முஹம்மத் ஹபிஸ் சையத் என்பவர் பெர்ஸிய மொழியிலும் உருது மொழியிலும் பேராசிரியராக அலஹாபாத் பல்கலைக் கழகத்தில் பணியாற்றி வந்தார். அவர் திருவண்ணாமலை வந்து மஹரிஷியை தரிசித்தார். ஏராளமான கேள்விகள் அவரைக் குடைந்தன. ஒவ்வொன்றாகக் கேட்டுத் தெளிவு பெற்றார்.

சையத்: உண்மையை எப்படி உணர்வது? அதை எப்படி அனுபவிப்பது?

மஹரிஷி: புதிதாக எதையும் பெற வேண்டியதே இல்லை! ஆன்மாவைப் பற்றிய அறியாமையை விட்டு விட்டாலே போதும்! ஆன்மாவை ஆன்மா அல்லாதவற்றுடன் அடையாளம் காண்பது தான் அறியாமை. அதை விட வேண்டும்.

இங்கு வந்த போது ஒரே தயக்கம். என்னை உங்களின் அருகே வர அனுமதிப்பார்களா, பேச விடுவார்களா என்றெல்லாம் சந்தேகப்பட்டேன். ஆனால் எனது சந்தேகம் எல்லாம் நீங்கி விட்டன. இங்கு அனைவரும் சமம் என்பதை உணர்ந்து கொண்டேன். இங்கு சமத்துவத்தை நீங்கள் உருவாக்கியிருக்கிறீர்கள். உங்களுடன் சேர்ந்து மற்றவர்களைப் போலவே சாப்பிட்டேன். இங்கு நடந்ததை உத்தர பிரதேசத்தில் சொன்னால் நம்பவே மாட்டார்கள். அங்குள்ள அந்தணர்கள் என்னுடன் சமபந்தியில் சாப்பிடமாட்டார்கள்; வெற்றிலை கூடப் போட மாட்டார்கள். ஆனால் இங்கோ நீங்கள் என்னை உங்களுடன் ஒருவனாக ஏற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். காந்திஜி இதைச் செய்ய முயன்று கொண்டிருந்தாலும் கூட தேசத்தில் அப்படிப்பட்ட நிலையை உருவாக்க இன்னும் முடியவில்லை. உங்கள் முன்னால் இருப்பதே எனக்கு ஆனந்தமாக இருக்கிறது.

உங்களை தெய்வமாக மதிக்கிறேன். ‘யார் வழிபட்டாலும் சரி, அப்படி வழிபடுபவர் என்னையே வழிபடுகிறார். அவரை நான் காப்பாற்றுவேன்” என்று ஶ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணர் அருளியுள்ளார். ஆனால் மற்றவர்களோ, என் மூலமாகத் தான் முக்தி என்று சொல்லி இருக்கின்றனர். ஶ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணர் ஒருவரே இப்படி பரந்த மனப்பான்மையுடன் கடவுளே பேசுவது போல அருளியுள்ளார். அதே சமத்துவத்தை நீங்களும் கடைப் பிடிக்கிறீர்கள்”

சையத் மனமுருக இப்படிப் பேசி விட்டு மஹரிஷியை வணங்கினார்.

இதிலிருந்து பல முறை அவர் மஹரிஷியைப் பார்க்க வருவது வழக்கமானது.

கஷ்டமான கேள்விகளுக்கு தான் வாழும் வாழ்க்கை மூலமாகவே எளிய விடையை காண்பித்தவர் மஹரிஷி.

ஹிந்துக்கள், கிறிஸ்தவர்கள், முஸ்லீம்கள், பார்ஸிகள், புத்த மதத்தினர், சீக்கியர், ஜைனர்கள் என அனைத்து மதத்தினரும் அவர் முன் சமமாக அணி வகுத்து நின்றனர்; சம உரிமையைப் பெற்றனர். தங்கள் தங்கள் சந்தேகங்களைத் தீர்த்துக் கொண்டு திருப்தியுடன் அவர் அருளைப் பெற்றனர்.

மஹரிஷியின் அருளுரைகள் ஆன்மீகச் சுரங்கம்; அதைத் தோண்டத் தோண்ட அற்புதமான இதமான விஷயங்கள் கிடைக்கும்; இறைவனை வெளிப்படுத்தும்!

2013  பிரிட்டிஷ் கிறிஸ்துமஸ் தபால்தலைகள்

பாரதிக்கு எம்மதமும் சம்மதம். இந்திய ஞானிகளுக்கே உள்ள தனிப்பெரும் உயர்ந்த சிந்தனை அவருக்கும் இருந்தது. ராமகிருஷ்ண பரமஹம்சர் போன்ற பெரியோர்கள் ஒவ்வொரு மதத்துக்குள்ளும் நுழைந்து உண்மைப்பொருளை உலகிற்கு எடுத்துரைத்தனர். பாரதியோ பாடலின் மூலம், ஏசுவையும், மரியா மக்தலேனாவையும், அல்லாவையும் பாடிப் பரவியுள்ளார். இதோ அவரது பாடல்:

நோவாலே மடிந்திட்டான் புத்தன் கண்டீர்

அந்தணனாம் சங்கராசார்யன் மாண்டான்

அதற்கடுத்த ராமனுஜனும் போனான்!

சிலுவையிலே அடியுண்டு யேசு செத்தான்

தீயதொரு கணையாலே கண்ணன் மாண்டான்

பலர் புகழும் இராமனுமே யாற்றில் வீழ்ந்தான்

பார் மீது நான் சாகாதிருப்பேன் காண்பீர்!

மலிவுகண்டீர் இவ்வுண்மை பொய் கூறேன் யான்,

மடிந்தாலும் பொய்கூறேன் மானுடர்க்கே

நலிவுமில்லை, சாவுமில்லை, கேளீர், கேளீர்.

 

இது ஒரு தத்துவப் பாடல். புத்தன், ஏசு, ராமன், கிருஷ்ணன் ஆகிய அனைவரும் இயற்கைக்கு மாறான மரணம் அடைந்தனர். ஆனாலும் ஆன்மா அழியாது. அவர்களுடைய பூத உடல் அழிந்தாலும் புகழ் உடம்பு நீடிக்கிறது. இந்தப் பொருளிலேயே பாரதியும் நான் சாகாதிருப்பேன் என்கிறார்.

இந்தப் பாட்டின் அடுத்த செய்யுளில் “அச்சத்தை வேட்கைதனை அழித்துவிட்டால் அப்போது சாவும் அங்கே அழிந்து போகும் மிச்சத்தைப் பின் சொல்வேன்” … என்று தொடர்கிறார். இதிலிருந்து அவர் சொல்லும் மரணமிலாப் பெரு வாழ்வு என்ன என்பது தெள்ளிதின் விளங்கும்.

 

ஏசு பிரான் பற்றி பாரதி பாடிய பாடல் இதோ:–

 

யேசு கிறிஸ்து

1.ஈசன் வந்து சிலுவையில் மாண்டான்

எழுந்துயிர்த்தனன் நாள் ஒரு மூன்றில்

நேசமா மரியா மக்தலேநா

நேரிலே இந்தச் செய்தியைக் கண்டாள்

தேசத்தீர் இதன் உட்பொருள் கேளீர்;

தேவர் வந்து நமக்குட்புகுந்தே

நாசமின்றி நமை நித்தங் காப்பார்

நம் அகந்தையை நாம் கொன்றுவிட்டால்.

 

2.அன்புகாண் மரியா மக்தலேநா

ஆவி காணுதிர் யேசு கிறிஸ்து;

முன்பு தீமை வடிவினைக் கொன்றால்

மூன்று நாளில் நல்லுயிர் தோன்றும்;

பொன்பொலிந்த முகத்தினிற் கண்டே

போற்றுவள் அந்த நல்லுயிர்தன்னை;

அன்பெனும் மரியா மக்தலேநா

ஆஹ! சாலப் பெருங்களி யிஃதே.

 

3.உண்மையென்ற சிலுவையிற் கட்டி

உணர்வை ஆணித் தவங் கொண்டடித்தால்

வண்மைப் பேருயிர் யேசு கிறிஸ்து

வான மேனியில் அங்கு விளங்கும்

பெண்மைகாண் மரியா மக்தலேநா

பேணும்நல்லறம் யேசு கிறிஸ்து

நுண்மைகொண்ட பொருளிது கண்டீர்

நொடியிலிஃது பயின்றிடலாகும்.

இந்தப் பாட்டில் ஏசு பிரான் மூன்று நாளில் உயிர்த்தெழுந்தது, சிலுவையில் அறையுண்டது எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் தத்துவ விளக்கம் தரப்படுகிறது.

 

தமிழில் பொருள் விளங்காதவர்களுக்கு ஒருவேளை, இதை ஆங்கிலத்தில் படித்தால் நன்றாகப் பொருள் விளங்கலாம்:-

1.The Lord came died upon the cross,

And rose up resurrected on the third day,

Devoted and glorious Mary Magdalene

Was witness to this wondrous event

Listen, countrymen, to its secret meaning;

The gods will come and live within us,

And shield us from evil, and redeem us for ever

If only we would shed our pride of self.

 

2.Look! Mary Magdalene is Love incarnate;

And look! Jesus Christ is the Holy Spirit!

If first we shed this embroiled evil,

Godly sacred life will manifest itself in three days.

Mary Magdalene, Love incarnate, saw the radiant vision

Of that godly sacred life beaming from the face

Of golden splendour, and praised it in adoration

This is bliss indeed! The greatest, most ecstatic bliss!’

 

3.If you tie the senses fast to the Cross called Truth,

And hammer them down with the nails of austere penance

Gloriously great and sacred life will shine with radiant splendour

In the sublime and celestial body of Lord Jesus Christ.

Look! Mary Magdalene is true womanhood incarnate;

And Jesus Christ is eternal virtue, which all cherish and revere!

Look! This is the finest, greatest secret, and inmost, mystic meaning;

Yet anyone can learn and practise it in just a moment’s time.

Bharati was the greatest Tamil poet of our time. He has sung about all the freedom fighters including G K Gokhale, Lala Lajpat Rai, Dadabai Naoroji, B G Tilak, V O C, M K Gandhi and national heroes and Gurus including Veera Shivaji, Guru Gobind Singh, poets including Tagore , Avvaiyar , Valluvan, Ilango, Kambanand Kalidas and philosophers and religious teachers including Shankara, Ramanuja, Vivekananda, Nivedita, Buddha and Jesus.

 

Here is his poem on Jesus Christ:-

In a town there was a thief. He used to go to ‘his work’ after worshipping in a temple praying for a good ‘harvest’. Every day he saw a big crowd listening to a saint. The saint was giving religious discourses. Sometimes he used to listen to it because of some jokes or stories told by the saint.

 

Suddenly wisdom dawned upon him. One day he visited the saint in the day time.

Thief: Guruji, Namaste!

Guru/saint: My son! Blessings! What brought you here?

Thief: I want to learn some Mantras. Please teach me some mantras.

Guru: Good. What do you do every day for living?

Thief: I am a thief. I have been doing it for the past thirty years.

Guru: What? You have been doing it for 30 years and you want to learn Mantras!

Thief: I want to shine in my life.

Guru: Since you boldly told me the truth that you are a thief, I see something good in you. So here is my Upadesa/teaching. From today onwards ‘Satyam Vada’ i.e. Speak the truth. This is enough for today.

 

Thief: Yes, Guruji! Thanks. I will follow it.

The same night he wanted to try his hand at the palace with the help of powerful mantra ‘Satyam Vada’.

 

At the dead of night, he went round the place with all the tools of his trade: Measuring thread, spade, chisel, ladder and hammer. At the same time the king came out of the palace to find the pulse of the country. Hindu kings always go out in disguise to know what the people think about his rule.

 

King: Hey! Who is it there?

Thief: I am a thief. Today I am going to rob the treasury.

King: Good. I come from outside. I need money. Can I help you? Just give me half of what you get.

Thief: Fine by me. Come on, let us climb the wall.

Since the king know his own palace, he took him straight to the treasury in the pitch darkness.

When they reached the treasury they came across a box. When they opened it they found three big, valuable ruby stones.

King: We are lucky. The very first found itself is valuable.

Thief: Right. Here is one for you and one for me. Let us leave the third stone for the owner.

King: I am surprised. We came to steal. Why do you leave one for the owner/King?

Thief: Look, man. I told you that I would give you half of what I get. If I take the second stone it would not be 50 – 50. If you take the second stone, then again it wouldn’t be half – half. But that is not the only reason. The owner of the stones will be happy to find at least one of his valuables is left out.

The king appreciated his opinion and both of them left the place. The king followed the thief without him knowing. King found out where exactly he lived in the town.

Next day the royal court began its daily session.

King: An important announcement! Spies told me that there was one robbery in the treasury. Did the finance minister who is in charge of treasury know it?

Finance Minister: Oh, King! None of us knew about the theft. We had even our ministerial meeting earlier in the day. I will quickly run to the treasury and give you a report.

When the finance minister went there he saw two gems were stolen and one left out. Greediness blinded him and he took one and put it in his inside pocket.

 

He came straight to the king and reported:

FM: King! Our spies are very efficient and correct. Three valuable gems- all rubies—were missing.

King: Are you sure that all the three gems missing? Nothing was left by the thief?

F M : Which foolish thief in the world will leave one gem?

King: Right. I have got one more bit of information. Guards, Go and get this man from this address. Don’t harm him.

 

The king gave the thief’s address to the royal guards who fetched him in no time.

Thief (shivering): Namaste, Maharaj.

King: What did you do last night?

Thief: I came to your palace with another thief and took two gems from your treasury. I kept one and gave the other to my partner. There was one more gem and I left it for the owner.

King: That is right. I was your partner last night. I came in disguise. Now the third gem is missing. FM, put it on the table at once.

FM: King, how dare you accuse me of theft? I and my forefathers have been serving you for generations.

King: If you don’t place it in front of me, I am going to order body search and your house search.

FM: Pardon me, King. My greediness blinded my eyes. He placed the ruby at the king’s feet.

As soon as he confessed, he was taken to the prison at the order of the king.

 

King: One more important announcement: This thief is appointed as the Finance Minister from today on wards. He is more truthful and more loyal to my kingdom than any one of you.

All the ministers congratulated the newly appointed FM.

The new FM went and met his Guru next day and told him what happened

In the past few days.

Guru: One Vedic command “Satyam Vada” is enough for you to shine in life. I will teach you more next week.

“You, O King, live in a distant region, far beyond the borders of many oceans, but, desiring humbly to share the blessings of our civilisation, you have sent an embassy respectfully bearing your letter. To show your devotion you have also sent offerings of your country’s produce.

Our dynasty’s majestic virtue has reached every country under Heaven and kings of all nations have sent their tribute by land and sea. We possess all things, we are not interested in strange and costly objects and we have no use of your country s products. I have accepted your tribute offerings only because of the devotion which made you send them so far.

I have read your letter, it shows a respectful humility on your part. I have shown great favour to your ambassador. I have entertained him and given him many gifts. I am sending you, O King, valuable presents of which I enclose a list. Receive them reverently and notice my tender good will towards you.

As to your request to send an ambassador to live at my Heavenly Court, this request cannot possibly be granted. Any European living in Peking is forbidden to leave China or write to his own country, so that you would gain nothing by having an ambassador here. Besides there are many other nations in Europe beside your own. If all of them asked to come to our court, how could we possibly consent? Can our dynasty change all its ways and habits in order to do what you ask?

Your ambassador asks us to allow your ships to trade at other ports beside Canton. There are no hongs and no interpreters at any other port, so that your barbarian merchants could not carry on their business there. For the future, as well as the past, your request is refused. Trade may be carried on only at Canton.

The request that your merchants may store and trade their goods In Peking is also impracticable. My capital is the hub and centre around which all the quarters of the earth revolve. Its laws are very strict and no foreigner has ever been allowed to trade there. This request is also refused.

Your ambassador has asked permission to have your religion taught in China. Since the beginning of history, wise emperors and sages have given china a religion which has been followed by the millions of my subjects. We do not need any foreign teaching. The request is utterly unreasonable.

From Triambakeswar we came back to Nashik and proceeded to Panchavati which is very nearby. As soon as we entered the town, we saw Ramayana scenes on the wall with descriptions in Hindi. This is about Rama’s encounter with Surpanaka followed by Maricha Vada (Killing of Maricha).

 

Panchavati became famous because of the incidents in the Aranya Kanda of Ramayana. Surpanakha tried to seduce Rama and Lakshmana followed by her disfigurement (nose cut). Maricha came disguised as a golden deer and Rama tried to catch it at the behest of Sita and Ravana came at the time to abduct Sita. Since Rama and Lakshmana camped there for most of the 14 year period in the forest, all the places there were connected with Ramayana.

We went to see the five banyan trees which gave the name to the place: Pancha means Five and Vata means Banyan tree = Five Banyan Trees= Pancha Vati.

 

The banyan trees are numbered from 1 to 5. Tourists can easily identify them. But most of the sign boards are in Hindi only. We need them in English or regional languages such as Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. North Indians can follow Hindi.

 

All along our route we saw lot of banyan trees and Sugar cane juice stalls. There is a Sita Cave (Sita Guha or Gufa). As our driver warned us about the condition of the cave we did not venture to go there. He told us some drunkards abused the place and there was even a murder in the recent past. But opposite the five trees, there was a centre with all the Ramayana statues and dolls. It was very good to see the scenes from the Aranyakanda.

The big attraction in Panchavati is the Kala Ram (Black Ram) temple. It is a beautiful Rama temple. In the nearby park we saw statues of Swami Vivekananda and Valmiki. Lot of shops sell things for tourists. We also bought some brass bells. I have already written about the tortoise lucky yantras sold there. With them Surya yantras are also sold.

 

Too many Toll gates:

Between Mumbai and Shirdi, we came across 8 to 10 toll gates. They extracted money and delayed the traffic. State and Central governments must find a way to eliminate them or use machines to photograph the number plates and charge them like we do in London for the Congestion Charge. Alternately State governments may be subsidised and the toll gates can be done away with.

 

Since onions became scarce and were in great demand, a lot of vendors were selling the  onion bags on the road side. We also saw lot of shops selling cheap Chinese toys such as teddy bears.

MUKTIDHAM

Muktidham is another place near Panchavati. There is a beautiful marble temple were all Hindu gods and saints are displayed in miniature form. There is a central shrine for Rama and Sita. On either side there are lot of statues or marble figures depicting Puraic scenes. Dis play of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines is the most impressive one.

 

There was a Kartikeya (Skanda) shrine where women are not allowed following the age old tradition. Poet Kalidasa and Tamil Sangam literature also talk about such a taboo.

 

One disappointing thing about such a beautiful temple is that we don’t get any pictures for sale. No one is allowed to take pictures inside the temple. In future, at least the temple should sell picture post cards.

Warning about Oily food

Our driver advised us to go to Rs 50 meals sold by the temple trust. But our ill luck made us to try the Purohit restaurant in the same compound where a meal (Thali) is Rs.230. We did not mind paying the amount, but all the dishes were floating in oil. Literally the vegetables were swimming in the oil!

 

Next time you go there, please try the temple restaurant and write to me about the quality of the food. Let me find out whether it is better than the restaurant!

I was fortunate enough to visit five places Mumbai, Trayambakeswar, Panchavati, Muktidham and Shirdi under good weather conditions. I give below my experience, observations and ideas for improvement. I was moved by the blind faith of the devotees who are the followers of Lord Shiva and Lord Ram. In contrast to South Indian temples where we see much show with women in silk saris and men in silk dhotis with hour long rituals, people in the North simply worshipped without any pomp.

 

We went to Trayambakeswar via Nashik from Mumbai. Being a Sunday we had to wait in the queue for nearly four hours. First we tried the special Q where one can pay Rs.200 and have quick Darshan. But we understood that there was a special time table for the paid Darshan. When we reached the sanctum sanctorum, it was Four O clock and the special Q also merged with us.

Trayambakeswar is one of the twelve important Shiva shrines spreading over from Rameswaram in the South to Kedarnath in the Northern Himalayas. They are called Dwadasa Jyotirlinga Shrines. Three of them are in Maharashtra.

Tortoise Mystery

I was surprised to see a big tortoise carved on the marble floor in front of the god. I have already written two articles about the mystery of tortoise. That is the longest living land animal with a life span of 300 years. That is the reason Lord Krishna mentioned it in Bhagavad Gita. Tamil literature also mentioned it. The second mystery is the Dwajasthambas (Flag staff) in Kerala temples are on the figure of a tortoise. This is not seen anywhere else. This mystery was not explained in any other scriptures. The third tortoise mystery is the Chinese belief that a turtle came with a magic square on it shell (adds up to No. 15= Kubera Yantra) and that is considered a lucky number. To my surprise shops in Panchavati and other places are selling yantras with tortoise picture. But we have no explanation for it in our scriptures. We know only the Kurmavatara of Vishnu and turtle shell, as a part of Lord Siva’s dress. (Please read my earlier articles on the tortoise mystery)

Here are some suggestions for improvement:

 

One disappointing thing was the flowers that devotees bought were taken by a woman even before we entered the Garbagriha and she gave us back a few flowers or leaves as Prasad. Devotees should be allowed to take at least a few flowers inside to offer them to the god.

 

 

In the Balaji temple at Tirupati, one would know where he stands in the Q. The sheds are numbered. In the same way the trust can number the lines and make announcement about the approximate time of waiting. For instance they can say, “ if you are in line 22, you will have to wait for at least three hours”.

 

Actually, we started in line 22 and it took three and a half hours to reach the Jyotirlinga. Though we were able to watch the Garbagriha and the main deity over big screen while waiting, there was no music. At least sweet devotional songs or Shiva Bhajans may be broadcast. Water facility for the people in the Q was good. Another suggestion is about the special Q. there was utter confusion and stampede in the junction where it merged with the ordinary Darshan Q. to avoid such stampede, there may be two lines : one for the special Q and another for ordinary Q. both can approach the deity at the same time.

 

There is a tradition to pour water over the Linga throughout the day. So the priests were doing Abishek with water now and then. I read in a book that the gold Kavasa (shield) is brought in a palanquin every Monday. Probably it has three faces of Shiva.

Hindu Stamps please!!

Modi Government should issue postage stamps for all the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines ,108 Vaishnavite shrines and 51 Sakti shrines. All the Christian countries such as UK, USA, Canada, Australia issue Christmas stamps every year. I have got hundreds of Christmas stamps with Christmas themes in my album. I have got stamps from Muslim countries in my album with mosques on it. All the Buddhist countries like Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, and Laos have issued hundreds of stamps for Buddha. Why shouldn’t we issue stamps for all the one hundred thousand temples in India?  The British boldly issued stamps with Hindu temples, when they ruled India. But secular India issued only stamps with Hindu statues or temples with architecture as its focus. It must issue stamps with religious focus.
