While some politicians run down
Sanskrit and vehemently oppose its introduction in our educational
institutions, the erudite scholars of the West who having realized its glory
and uniqueness and charmed by its elegance, have spoken about it in glowing
terms. The following excerpts from Sir Monier Williams introduction to his
monumental work, Sanskrit English Dictionary (brought out by the Oxford
University Press more than a century ago
– in 1872) should provide some food for thought to all concerned:
By
Sanskrit is meant the learned language of India – the language of its cultured inhabitants, the language of its religion, its literature and science – not by any means a dead language, but one still
spoken and written by educated men by all parts of the country, from Kashmir to Cape
Comorin, from Bombay to Calcutta and Madras. We are appalled by the length of some of India’s literary
productions (in Sanskrit) as compared with those of European countries. In some
subjects too, especially in poetical descriptions of nature and domestic
affections, Indian works do not suffer by comparison with the best specimens of
Greece and Rome while in wisdom, depth and shrewdness of their moral
apophthegms they are unrivalled. The Hindus are perhaps the only nation, except
the Greeks, who have investigated independently and in a true scientific manner
the potential laws which govern the
evolution of languages. More than this, the Hindus had made considerable
advances in astronomy, algebra, arithmetic, botany and medicine, not to mention
their superiority in grammar, long before some of these sciences were
cultivated by the most ancient nations of Europe.
Going through the above statement in
glorifications of Sanskrit by the renowned orientalist and professor of
Sanskrit in Oxford University, our present day secularists may dub him a
“communalist”, because he is vouchsafing the hard truth which is naturally
unpalatable.

Many years before the popularity of Florida as a winter resort, John D Rockefeller was in the habit of spending his winters at Augusta, Georgia.
While there he always attended the coloured Baptist church the first Sunday of his stay, and the white Episcopal and Methodist churches the following two Sundays. The Methodist minister, intrigued by the invariable schedule, once asked the Baptist preacher if he knew Why Mr Rockefeller always visited his church first. “Why, that is easy”, replied the preacher. “You Methodists burn electricity, the Episcopalians use gas, but we burn kerosene oil.”

Are you a
reformed drunkard?”
That American revivalist, Dwight Moody, once passed through a large crowd in a Chicago railway station distributing tracts on temperance. One of those to receive this material was a benign elderly gentleman who glanced at the paper in his hand and peered quizzically at Moody.
“Are you a reformed drunkard?” He asked. “No, sir, I am not! “cried Moody in indignation. Then, answered the old gentleman, “Why don’t you reform?”

Who was Cain’s
wife?
Billy Sunday, the ‘rootin, tooting’ , saw dust trail
evangelist, was-once interrupted in his harangue by a heckler, who shouted the
question, then famous in all agnostic or atheists circles,
“Who was Cain’s wife?”
Billy Sunday shot back the reply,
“I respect any seeker of knowledge, but I want to warn you,
young man, don’t risk being lost to salvation by too much inquiring after other
men’s wives”.

A missionary told how she was once describing the loving
character of the Christians’ god to a company of her Chinese sisters. As she
went on in her holy enthusiasm, picturing gods real as character as full of
mercy to the sinful and suffering, one of the Chinese women turned to her
neighbor and said,
“Haven’t I often told you there ought to be a god like that”?.
