TWELVE LABOURS OF HERAKLES

Greek Hero Hercules ( Herakles) accomplished twelve labours when he was in the service of King Eurystheus of Tiryns; several of these resemble Lord Krishna’s Leelas :-

1.The Nemean Lion

Herakles was ordered to kill a lion which was terrorizing the Land of Nemea. No weapon could penetrate its hide. He used his club and killed it. He then skinned the lion with its own claws  and donned the pelt to render himself invulnerable.

2.The Lernean Hydra

He was sent to kill the nine headed snake or dragon Hydra in the swamp near Lerna When he chopped off one head two grew up. His Iolus helped him to kill it. It is similar to Kaliya mardhana of Lord Krishna.

3. The Cerynean Hind

Herakles was asked to capture this beast. It had golden horns and bronze hooves.  It was sacred to goddess Artemis. After a yeas chase he caught and injured it. To escape the goddess’ anger, he blamed King Eurystheus for its injury.

4.The Erymanthian Boar

The hero had to bring this monstrous boar back home. He captured it and sent to Tiryns. King Eurystheus was scared to look at it and so hid it in an urn.

5. The Augean Stables

Herakles was asked to clean the stables in one day.. he succeeded in cleaning it by diverting the rivers into stable. It is similar to Krishna lifting the Govardhana Giri.

6. The Stymphalian Birds

Heracles was ordered to get rid of the monstrous man eating birds with iron claws. They were living in Lake Stymphalos; He first scared them and shot one by one with his bow.

7.The Cretan Bull

Eurystheus sent Herakles to Crete island to capture a bull that was terrorizing the island. The hero caught the bull and took it to Greece.

8.The Mare of Diomedes

Diomedes , King of Bitones owned vicious mares and he fed them with the flesh of strangers. Herakles went to Thrace and killed Diomedes and fed the mares with his flesh. He tamed them and took them to his king.

9. The Girdle of Hippolyte

Hippolyte was the queen of Amazons, who wore a beautiful girdle. Herakles was sent to fetch it for Eurytheus’ daughter. He slew Hippolyte and took the girdle from her body

10.The Cattle of Geryon

Herakles borrowed the cu of Helios, the sun and sailed to Gerion beyond Spain. There he killed the three bodied monster.

11.The Apples of the Hesperides

Hesperides was the nymph who raised a tree with golden apples. Herakles killed the dragon called Ladon who guarded the tree. He took the golden apples.

12.The Descent to the Underworld

Cerberus was the three headed dog which guarded the gates of the underworld. Herakles after a great struggle dragged it to his king Eurystheus and then sent it back to the Underworld.

Self Improvement Series

Vastu is a living organism. Vastu books of Hinduism explain the secrets about the health of a construction or a building. The preparation of site, commencement of building, layout of building, disposition of rooms in the building, kitchen, worship room, bed room, living room, walking space in rooms, verandahs, Doors and windows, woodwork, well, compound around building, toilet are all very important and one should learn the art of Vastu and build the building according to the rules and guidance given by the sages to get the maximum benefits.

Each direction of the building is governed by planet. Each direction gives certain specific benefits.

Similarly, Feng Shui which originated in China 4000 years ago ensures improved health, better sleep, harmonious family relationship, longevity, active sex life, wealth, fame.

‘Chi’ is the subtle flow of electromagnetic energy which links all things in the universe. Buildings alter the flow of energy. The design and interior decoration of a building should enhance the kind of chi energy so that the occupants enjoy the maximum benefits.

One who follows Feng Shui will maximize his benefits.

Even though hundreds of complicated rules are laid, the basic rules if followed properly assure a trouble free life.

Vastu and Feng Shui accept the fundamental principles.
Some of the important rules are given below.

The Brahma Sthala or the centre point of the building is very important. It should be kept clean.

Chanakya in his,’Arthasastra’ lays down that in the midst of the king’s fort were to be constructed the temples of Siva, Vaisravana, the Asvins, Lakshmi and Madira (all Hindu deities).

Similarly in all the houses and commercial places, the centre place should be vacant and kept clean.

It is preferable if the building faces East or North East.

The building should never face South-East.

The bedroom should be on the South-West.

Kitchen should be preferably on the South-East corner of the building.

Worship room should be in the North-East direction.

The well should be provided on the North-East direction of the plot.

The concept of yin and yang offers a comprehensive way of looking at the world and how it affects you. Feng Shui explains Yin and Yang in detail.

Hindu Vastu God in Rome and Greece!

vestatemple_nero

Research article by London swaminathan

Article No.1917; Dated 7 June 2015.

Uploaded at London time: 17-49

Vastu god was worshipped as Vesta in Rome and Hestia in Greece. Since they lost touch with India for thousands of years after they left the Indian landmass on their migratory routes they developed the stories in their own way. We see such trends in our Puranas and Sthala (local) Puranas of every town in Tamil Nadu. Same Siva or Vishnu will have a different story in each town with interesting turns and twists. This happened with the Vedic God Vaastospati who is invoked in one short hymn in the oldest religious book in the world, the Rig Veda (7-54-1/3). Vaastospati means Lord of the House. He is invoked to bless man and beast, to remove diseases, to make cattle and horses prosper, to afford protection and to grant a favourable entry.

He is elsewhere described as the destroyer of diseases, is identified with Soma, brought into close connection with Tvastr, an artificer, and he is likened to Indra in connection with Soma pressers.

Origin of Grhapravesa (Entering New House) Ceremony

In the Tenth book of Rig Veda (10-61-7) he appears as an observer of ordinances, who was fashioned by the gods. His character is made clearer by the fact that the Grhyasutras prescribed that offerings are to be made to him upon entering new house. In later literature (TS 3-4-10-3) Rudra bears the style in one passage. The god is clearly the god of the house, who when a new house is built, comes and abides in it. Later in the Sutras, we hear more generally of deities in the house.

Goddess in Rome Vesta

Vesta was the Goddess of Rome. Vesta sounds like Vastu. She was the goddess of the hearth/fireplace, regarded as the centre of the home, so that in effect she had an altar in every house besides the great sanctuary in the Forum attended by the Vestal Virgins. In contrast to other temples, it was circular in shape. It was served only by virgins who had been selected in their childhood from among the most perfect girls of the city. They were placed under the authority of the great pontiff and received many honours. If they failed to remain chaste, they were whipped or walled up alive at the Collins Gate in Rome.

vesta 3

Now here is the comparison with Vedic deities:

Vasstospati is a male deity but Vesa is a female deity. But the fire place is part of every Brahmin’s house in ancient India. Every Brahmin had three different fire places in his house and one of them is circular like Vesta’s. Another point is the girls were given to temples in India also who remained chaste till their death. But they were not punished for violating the rules of celibacy. Romans thought Vesta was the guardian of the city. In India every city has a guardian goddess like Vesta of Rome.

In Rome, the fire was kept lit all year long and its flame was solemnly stirred up during the festival in March – Vestalia. This flame had to be obtained solely by rubbing two pieces of wood together. This is also a Vedic custom. For all the Vedic fire ceremonies they produce fire by rubbing two woods and there is special mantras for it. Moreover from birth to death, the same fire in the Brahmin’s house is used. So it was never allowed to stop burning. In the temples the flame was kept alive in Nunda Vilakku (Eternal Flame), special type of lamps which will burn for years continuously. Only thing is oil has to be filled now and then in the pot like bottom of the lamp.

kalibanganfirealtars.

Vedic Fire Altars in Indus valley Site in Kalibangan

Her name derives – like the name of Hestia — from a Sanskrit root, vas, which expresses the idea of shining. The Romans made Vesta a goddess who personified earth and fire – the fire required for domestic use or in religious ceremonies. As goddess of fire she received both a private and public cult. Hindu’s Fire god is also treated the same way in the Vedas. Vesta received daily offerings from each family, at the hearth/fire place. In Brahmin families everyday offerings were given to fire god. It was called Aupasanam or Agni Hotram. On 9th of June every year was the Vestalia when barefoot Roman matrons offered food baked on their hearths. In Indian temples women give offerings on barefoot on certain days in a year.

As with the Balts and Slavs, a woman had to bring fire from her mother’s house when she married. The goddess of fire celestial and earthly naturally suggests Agni, the god of fire, lightning and the sun: all forms of fire. The rounded temple echoed the form of the sun: the hearth as the earthly counterpart of the heavenly fire.

In the Rig Veda, every male head of a family was obliged to perform, every day, Purvas. For this purpose he had to set up in his house three kinds of fire, protecting his house and the fires by placing  altars of special design. The fires were known as Dakshinagniyam (Semi Circular altar), Garhapatyam (Circular altar) and Ahavaneeyam (Square altar). The altars, intended to shield the fires, had to be built to design plans which related them to each other in the shape and area. To calculate the correct dimensions, sound knowledge of geometry was required. This is quite a complex calculation, requiring an accurate value of pi and a knowledge of the formula for the areas of a circle and rectangle. In such ways as this, the religious concerns of Hindu heads of families had the effect of raising the arithmetical standards of everyone involved. Advanced Geometry originated in India during the Vedic period.

Hindus’ Future Predictions- Part 2

  1. God’s particle and Kanchi Shankaracharya: Kanchi Shankaracharya who attained Samadhi at the age of 100, delivered a lecture in Madras in 1932. At that time the Periodic Table had only 72 elements. He made a passing remark about it and said they will find in future that there is only “one” from which all these came from. Now we are looking for such a particle. What Shankaracharya said 80 years ago will soon be proved by the scientists.
  1. Big Bang: The universe came into existence from the sound (AUM). This is what happened during Big Bang 1500 million years ago. Hindus talk about Big Shrink as well in their literature.
  1. G spot: Hindus were the first to explore sex. Whether it is grammar or sex they produced the first scientific treatise. 11th century Sanskrit literature speaks about mysterious G spot which gives pleasure for women during sexual intercourse. Now biologists are proving that the Sanskrit texts are right (See New Scientist, April 28, 2012 issue). They will find more from Vatsyayana’s Kamasutra.
  1.  84 lakhs Yoni Bedam: Even before Linnaeus and others classified the plant and animal kingdoms Hindus said that there were 8.4 million species. It may not coincide exactly with what the biologists say today. After all we are the one who classify them and in future lot of species may be merged into one family or a lot may be further sub divided. What matters here is we knew many lakhs of species were there when other cultures did not even bother about the number.
  1. Brahma’s life: What we say about the life of Brahma, Manu etc can be interpreted in many ways. Please read my article Do Hindus believe in Aliens and ETs? We were the one who came at least nearer to Big Bang time by giving the Life of Brahma, Manvantara etc.

  1. Eight Super Powers: “Ashtama Siddhi”  is a house hold word for Hindus. We come across such words from Vedic literature to Hanuman Chalisa. Man’s mental power is an unexplored area in western science. Only now they have realised the importance o it because of the time taken for travel to Mars and back. Science will slowly acknowledge it and start practising Yoga to attain Eight Great Super Powers. The need for Yogasana and Pranayama (breath control exercise) will be acknowledged by the scientific community.
  1. Rebirth : Though lot of cases of rebirth have been identified and researched ,still it remains a mystery for scientists. They try to explain differently because Semitic religions don’t accept it. Slowly scientists will accept it by doing proper and open research.

Dreams : Western psycho analysts Freud and Jung haven’t understood the dreams well. Though they created awareness in this area, their explanation of dreams as “suppressed desire” is not right. Hindus have explained the meaning of dreams. Saints like Dr Sivananda of Divine Life Society have explained it very well. Psychologists and psycho analysts will slowly accept the Hindu explanation of dreams (please read Do our Dreams come true?).

  1. Body Symmetry and Body Features: Hindus have studied the body parts and its features very well and developed a new science called Shamudrika Lakshan. This is an unexplored field in western countries. By studying the body features of a man or a woman one can tell their virtues, qualities and health. Scientists will rush for ancient Indian Sanskrit texts when they realise the importance of such features.
  1. Vastu Sastra/ Sacred Geometry: It is similar to above Kshamudrika Lakshan. Instead of body features, here we see the structure and location of buildings. Now even big companies hire Feng Sui (Vastu Sastra of Chinese) experts to build or reconstruct their buildings. Scientists will accept and acknowledge our contribution in this area.
  2.  Research on Twins gave inconclusive evidence to the validity of astrology. Proper research by Indians with the help of computers will prove our astrological texts are right. Those who study Nadi Jothidam books, published already (Saptarishi Nadi) would find out what exactly can be told in advance about a person born on a particular day.
  1. Powers of copper utensils, Dharba grass, Vedic Soma plant juice, cow’s Urine and several trees like Neem, Pipal, Katampu , Ayur Vedic and Siddha medicines will get renewed attention from the scientists and Hindu contribution will be appreciated.
  1. Mankind is divided into seven major groups (came from Sapta Rishis) according to Hindus. They banned Gotra marriages (man, woman relationship in the same clan/gotra). There was only one language (Tower of Babel story) which gave birth to several languages. Gotras and one language theory will get some new impetus and old language theories will be discarded.
  1. Puranas (Hindu mythologies) such as Devi Bhgavath gives graphic description of various worlds (loka loka parvatham, four dig Gajams Rishabam, Pushkarasutam, Vamanam and Varajitham). Even those who don’t believe such descriptions as astronomical descriptions will have to give the writer the title -First Science Fiction Writer!!
  1. When Arjuna was taken in the Space Shuttle ( Matali’s Chariot) to the heaven (Indra Loka), he asked about the stars. Matali answered him saying that they were the Punya Atmas (Good souls). I couldn’t understand this till I heard a TV broadcast where Patrick Moore, The British Royal Astronomer made a statement that we were all stars once!! We were all star dust once upon a time, may be billions and billions of years ago. This partly explains Matali’s answer to Arjuna that stars are Holy souls. Hindus name the stars after Rishis/ seers. Apart from the Sapta Rishis (Seven stars in the Great Bear/ Ursa Major), we have named other stars as Arundhati, Dhruv, Agastya and Tri Sanku. Hindu literature contains more stories about the 27 Nakshatras (stars). Viswamitra was praised for creating a “new world”. Many of these are not even understood by us now.
