காந்திஜியும் மத மாற்றமும்

மஹாத்மா காந்தி அடிக்கடி தான் ஒரு ஹிந்துவாக இருப்பதில் பெருமைப்படுவதாகக் கூறி வந்தார்.
கிறிஸ்தவ மிஷனரிகள் அப்பாவி மக்களை ஏமாற்றி அவர்களை மதம் மாறச் செய்வதில் அவர் வருத்தமும் கோபமும் கொண்டார்.
பல்வேறு சமயங்களில் அவர் அவர்களை இதற்காகக் கண்டித்துள்ளார்.
ஒரே ஒரு உரையை மட்டும் இங்கு காணலாம்:
23-4-1931 தேதியிட்ட அவரது உரையில் பல கருத்துக்கள் தெளிவாகக் குறிப்பிடப்படுகின்றன.
அவற்றின் சாரத்தைத் தமிழிலும் மூலத்தை – ஒரிஜினலை – ஆங்கிலத்திலும் கீழே காணலாம்.
மனிதாபிமானத்திற்காக அல்லாமல் மதமாற்றத்திற்காக கல்வி,மருத்துவ உதவி போன்றவற்றை ஏழை மக்களுக்கு அவர்கள் செய்வதாக இருந்தால் அதை நான் ஆதரிக்க மாட்டேன்.
ஒவ்வொரு தேசமும் அதன் மத நம்பிக்கை இதர தேச மத நம்பிக்கை போலவே நல்லது என்று கருதுகிறது.
இந்தியாவில் உள்ள மத நம்பிக்கைகள் அங்குள்ள மக்களுக்கு நிச்சயமாகப் போதுமானது. ஒரு மதத்திலிருந்து இன்னொரு மதத்திற்கு மாறுவது இந்தியாவிற்குத் தேவையே இல்லை.
மனிதாபிமானம் என்றபெயரில் மதம் மாற்றுவது ஆரோக்கியமான விஷயம் அல்ல. இங்குள்ளோர் அதனால் மிகவும் வருத்தமடைகின்றனர். மதம் என்பது ஒருவரது தனிப்பட்ட விஷயம். அது இதயத்தைத் தொடும் ஒன்று. கிறிஸ்தவ மதத்தைப் பின்பற்றும் ஒரு டாக்டர் ஏதோ ஒரு வியாதியை எனக்குக் குணப்படுத்தி விட்டார் என்பதற்காக நான் ஏன் மதம் மாற வேண்டும்? அவரது செல்வாக்கில் நான் இருக்கும் போது அப்படி ஒரு டாக்டர் அதை ஏன் எதிர்பார்க்க வேண்டும் அல்லது அப்படி மாற ஏன் யோசனை கூற வேண்டும்? அவரது மருத்துவத்தினால் குணமாவதே அவருக்கான சிறந்த பரிசும் திருப்தியும் இல்லையா? ஒரு மிஷனரி கல்வி நிலையத்தில் நான் படிக்கையில் கிறிஸ்தவபோதனைகள் என் மேல் ஏன் திணிக்கப்பட வேண்டும்? எனது அபிப்ராயத்தில் இவை என்னை மேலே தூக்கி விடும் ஒன்றல்ல; இரகசிய எதிர்ப்பிற்காக இல்லையென்றாலும் அது சந்தேகத்திற்கு இடமளிக்கும் ஒன்றாகும். மதமாற்ற வழிமுறைகளானது சீஸரின் மனைவி போல சந்தேகத்திற்கு அப்பாற்பட்ட ஒன்றாக இருக்க வேண்டும்.மதசார்பற்ற விஷயம் போல மத நம்பிக்கை இருத்தல் வேண்டும். அது இதயம் பேசும் மொழியால் தரப்படும் ஒன்று. ஒரு மனிதன் ஜீவனுள்ள நம்பிக்கையைத் தன்னிடம் கொண்டிருந்தால் அது ரோஜா மலரின் வாசனை போல மணம் பரப்பும். கண்ணுக்குத் தெரியாத அதன் தன்மையினால் கண்ணுக்குத் தெரியும் மலர் இதழ்களின் அழகை விட அதன் செல்வாக்கு வெகு தூரம் வரை பரப்பும்.
நான் மதமாற்றத்திற்கு எதிரானவன் இல்லை. ஆனால் அதன் நவீன முறைகளுக்கு எதிரானவன். மதமாற்றம் என்பது இன்று வணிகமாகி விட்டது. ஒரு மிஷனரி அறிக்கையில் ஒரு மனிதனை மதமாற்ற தலைக்கு ஆகும் செலவு எவ்வளவு என்றும் அதன் அடிப்படையில் அடுத்த “அறுவடைக்கு” ஆகும் செலவுக்கு பட்ஜெட் தர வேண்டும் என்றும் சொல்லப்பட்டிருப்பதை நான் படித்தேன்.
“ஆமாம். இந்தியாவின் பெரிய மத நம்பிக்கைகள் அதற்குப் போதும். கிறிஸ்தவம், யூதம் தவிர ஹிந்து அதன் கிளைகள்,இஸ்லாம்,ஜொராஷ்ட்ர மதம் ஆகியவை ஜீவனுள்ள மதங்கள். எந்த ஒரு மதமும் பூரணமானதல்ல.
எல்லா மதங்களும் சமமானவை. ஆகவே வேண்டுவது என்னவெனில் உலகின் பெரும் மதங்களைப் பின்பற்றுவோரிடையே நட்புடனான தொடர்பு வேண்டுமேயன்றி மற்றவற்றை விட பெரிது என்று காட்டும் பயனற்ற முயற்சி தேவையில்லை. அப்படிப்பட்ட நட்பு ரீதியிலான தொடர்பால் நமது மதத்தில் உள்ள குறைகளையும் தேவையற்றவற்றையும் களைந்து விட முடியும்.
மேலே நான் கூறியவற்றால், இந்தியாவில் மதமாற்றத்திற்கான தேவை இல்லை. சுய தூய்மை, ஆன்மாவை உணர்தல் ஆகிய மாற்றமே இன்றைய அவசரத் தேவை. இதை மதமாற்றம் என்று சொல்லப்படுவதற்கு என்றுமே அர்த்தமாகக் கொண்டதில்லை.
இந்தியாவை மாற்ற வருபவரிடம், “வைத்தியரே, முதலில் உம்மைக் குணப்படுத்திக் கொள்ளும்” என்று சொல்ல வேண்டுமல்லவா?

ஆங்கில மூலத்தைக் கீழே காணலாம்:
Gandhiji clarified his views on the role of foreign missionaries in India. (23-4-1931)
“(If) instead of confining themselves purely to humanitarian work such as education,
medical services to the poor and the like, they would use these activities of theirs for
the purpose of proselytizing, I would certainly like to withdraw. Every nation considers
its own faith to be as good as that of any other. Certainly, the great faiths held by the
people of India are adequate for her people. India stands in no need of conversion from
one faith to another.
“Let me now amplify the bald statement. I hold that proselytizing under the cloak of
humanitarian work is, to say the least, unhealthy. It is most certainly resented by the
people here. Religion after all is a deeply personal matter, it touches the heart. Why
should I change my religion because a doctor who professes Christianity as his religion
has cured me of some disease or why should a doctor expect or suggest such a change
whilst I am under his influence? Is not his medical relief its own reward and
satisfaction? Or why should I, whilst I am in a missionary educational institution, have
Christian teaching t^mist upon me? In my opinion these practices are not uplifting and
give rise to suspicion if not even secret hostility. The methods of conversion must be
like Caesar^ wife above suspicion. Faith is imparted like secular subjects. It is given
through the language of the heart. If a man has a living faith in him, it spreads its aroma
like the rose its scent. Because of its invisibility, the extent of its influence is far wider
than that of the visible beauty of colour of the petals.
“I am, then, not against conversion. But I am against the modern method of it.
Conversion nowadays has become a matter of business like any other. I remember
having read a missionary report saying how much it cost per head to convert and then
present a budget for ‘the next harvest’.
“Yes, I do maintain that India’s great faiths all suffice for her. Apart from Christianity
and Judaism, Hinduism and offshoots, Islam and Zoroastrianism are living faiths. No one
faith is perfect.
All faiths are equally dear to their respective votaries. What is wanted therefore is living
friendly contact among the followers of the great religions of the world and not a clash
among them in fruitless attempt on the part of each community to show the superiority
of its faith over the rest. Through such friendly contact it will be possible for us all to rid
our respective faiths of shortcomings and excrescences.
“It follows from what I have said above that India is in no need of conversion of the kind
I have in mind. Conversion in the sense of self-purification, self-realization is the crying
need of the times. That, however, is not what is ever meant by proselytizing. To those
who would convert India, might it not be said, ‘Physician heal thyself’ ? (Complete Works of Mahatma Gandhi – Volume 46:Page 28)

மதமாற்றம் பற்றிய காந்திஜியின் கருத்துக்களை இதற்கு மேல் விளக்க வேண்டிய தேவை இல்லை.
இன்றைய போலி செகுலரிஸவாதிகள் காந்திஜியை தங்கள் துஷ்பிரசாரத்திற்கு இனியும் இரையாக்கத் தேவையில்லை.
1931ஆம் ஆண்டு அவர் கூறிய இந்தக் கருத்துக்கள் இன்றைக்கும் பொருந்தும்.
மதமாற்றப் பாதிரிகள் இன்னும் தீவிரமாக மக்களை ஏமாற்றுவதை நாடெங்கும் தினம்தோறும் பார்த்து வருகிறோம்.
கடலோரப் பகுதிகளிலும், மலைவாழ் மக்களின் பட்டி தொட்டிகளிலும், தேசத்தின் எல்லையோரப் பகுதிகளிலும் அவர்களின் முயற்சி அதிக அளவில் அதிகப் பணச்செலவில் இன்றும் தொடர்கிறது.
மதமாற்றத்திற்காக தேசத்தைத் துண்டாடும் கலவரங்களைத் தூண்டிவிடும் அளவிற்கு இன்றைய நிலைமை மோசமாகி விட்டது.
கிறிஸ்தவ பாதிரிகளே, முதலில் உமது வியாதியிலிருந்து நீவீ ர் உம்மைக் குணப்படுத்திக் கொள்ளும் என்று காந்திஜியின் வார்த்தைகளை அப்படியே கூறி அவர்களை உடனடியாக பாரதத்தை விட்டு அகற்றுவதே இன்றைய தேவை.
