Sun is the most important God to Hindus. How do we know that?

We know that because millions of Brahmins look at sun in the morning , mid noon and evening and recite the most powerful Mantra in the Four Vedas known as Gayatri Mantra.

We know it because millions of RSS workers and Yoga practitioners do Surya Namaskar (12+1 times) every day in the morning.

We know it because Savitar, Aditya, Bhaga, Surya and Mitra are found in hundreds of hymns in the Vedas.

xxx

Muir in his original Sanskrit Texts say,

“I regard it (EYE) as the most Sun like of all the organs of sensation” -Socrates

Plato in his Republic , VI .18, quoted Socrates.

This is not the only one instance which connects Socrates to the Vedas. Scores of books have been published showing Greek philosophers’ knowledge of the Vedas. From Pythagoras to Alexander, all show that they knew Hindu concepts.

I went further down the road and found out even Tamil poet Tiruvalluvar knew Socrates drinking poison. (Please see the links at the end of this article; my article written in 2011)

This Socrates matter is from the footnote to Atharva Veda Mantra Canto/Book 5, Hymn 9 (Sukta 151)

Hymns of the Atharva Veda, by Ralph T.H. Griffith, [1895], at sacred-texts.com

HYMN IX

A prayer to Heaven and Earth for protection and assistance

1All hail to Heaven!
2All hail to Earth!
3All hail to Air!
4All hail to Air!
5All hail to Heaven!
6All hail to Eartht!
7Mine eye is Sīirya and my breath is Vāta, Air is my soul and
  Prithivī my body.
I verily who never have been conquered give up my life toe
  Heaven and Earth for keeping.
8Exalt my life, my strength, my deed and action; increase my
   understanding and my vigour.
Be ye my powerful keepers, watch and guard me, ye mistresses
of life and life’s creators! Dwell ye within me, and forbear
   to harm me.

‘Eye is surya’ is found throughout the four Vedas starting from starting from the most famous Purushasukta of Rig Veda (RV 10-90). It is recited every day in temples and orthodox Brahmin houses.

Eye and Sun:- also AV. 5-24-9; RV.10-16-3

Scores of references are in the Vedas about sun light treatment for skin problems, killing seen and unseen germs, known and unknown germs etc.

Even the half baked 30 + Europeans who translated Vedas into European languages 150 years ago use the Vedic words ‘known and unknown’, ‘seen and unseen’ in their translations!

TWO UNSOLVED MYSTERIES

I don’t know when the NASA and Russian scientists would solve the two puzzles in the Vedas.

One is about Valakhilyas travelling before sun. (Please see the link at the bottom; my article written in 2011)

NEW MYSTERY!

We don’t know what the Vedic Rishis meant when they sang three Ribhus live in the Solar Sphere. One day NASA would explain it and then we can boast again “IT IS AREADY SAID BY OUR VEDIC SEERS!!!”

What did they say about ‘THREE LIVING IN SUN’?

Ribhus are three sons of Sudhanvan. They are found in the Rig Veda , the oldest book in the world.

Ribhus are descendants of seer Angiras. Their names are Ribhu, Vibhvan/Vibhu and Vaaja; collectively called RIBHUS from the name of the eldest.

Through their assiduous performance of good works they obtained divinity , and became entitled to receive praise and adoration. THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DWELL IN THE SOLAR SPHERE. There is an indistinct identification of them with the rays of the sun.

(We know that Hydrogen is converted into Helium every second and billions of hydrogen bombs explode every second in the Yellow type Star sun and we receive different types of rays, both harmful and helpful)

Helium is derived from Sanskrit word Suryan (H=S; L=R;M=N according to linguistic rules)

But I don’t know whether they meant the elements in sun.

Ribhus show us one more thing. Professor Wilson says, “They prove the admission, at an early date, of the doctrine, that men may become divinities”.

This is a typical ADVAITA concept found in Bhagavad Gita and Tamil Veda Tirukkural (50); Bhagavad Gita 4-10. Father Athanasius of Alexandria also said it. Egyptian port Alexandria had a very big Hindu colony. So Athanasius said God became man so that men could become Gods; he probably justified all the Avataras of Vishnu!

xxx

FOUR CUP MYSTERY

The Ribhus are said to have made Four sacrificial Cups out of single chalice. (Sanskrit word Kalasa becomes Chalice in English ;C=K; also Vedic word Samiti=committee; Vedic word Sankha=Conch)

Tvashtar made only one cup. Saying that the Ribhus made four out of one may signify some innovations made by them.

Ribhus are also attributed the manufacturing of Indra’s chariot and ‘horses’. If they have stopped saying they made chariots, then we may say they were great design engineers or just skilful carpenters; but the word they made ‘Horses’ may mean they built some space shuttles for Indra’s Inter Galactic Space Trips. Even today we use the word ‘Horse power’ for powerful engines, though no horse is used!

FROM LONDON SWAMINATHAN’S HOME LIBRARY

Rig Veda, the oldest book in the world, dated around 4500 BCE by Bala Gangadara Tilak and Herman Jacobi of Germany, has a lot of amazing things about Human Eye.

Hindus believe in three things which science would prove one day:

1 Moon has connection with plants on earth. They grow with the help of moon. But science says photo synthesis happen with the help of sunlight and without photo synthesis plants will die. They never connect moon with the plants.

2.Hindus believe power of eye will improve or increase by doing Surya Namaskar (Exercise cum Sun Worship) in the early morning. Science don’t believe in it; but it says Vitamin D is obtained by sunlight. Nowadays doctors in London advise everyone to take Vitamin D. Latest scientific articles say deficiency of Vitamin D is the root cause of many health problems. So, the doctors and scientists partially agree with us.

3.Moon has a sway over human mind. Though scientists don’t agree with Hindus, statistical records show increased mental health problems are seen on Full Moon days and New Moon days. Surface of Earth is covered with 70 % water and human body also consists of 70% water, so the moon effect on water is understandable, argue believers. But no precise scientific proof is available.

Eye in the Rig Veda

The most famous sukta/hymn of Rig Veda 10-90 Purusha Suktam is recited every day in temples and orthodox brahmin houses. Max Muller gang and Marxist gangs are interested in it because of the reference to the four castes for the first time in the Vedas. But we are going to investigate another interesting point in it.

When a rishi looked at the universe as God, Cosmic Man/Person , he says,

“The moon was born from his mind; from his eye the sun was born”- RV -10-90-13

Here we see the connection to eye and sun. Greeks also borrowed it from us:-

Eyes resemble the sun, both as a rayed circle (eye and lashes) and also a set of concentric circles (pupil, iris, white). The sun is able to see all that is happening on earth. In many European languages , eyes can stand for the sun. in Old Irish the word for eye is ‘suil’.

Sul, solar, suil – and many other words are derived from Surya in the Rig Veda. R/L change is seen in all the languages; so, Surya becomes Solya and then solar, sul, sur etc.

GREEKS

There is a Greek prayer referring to the goddess Theia in terms of sun:-

“Thou beam of the sun

Far seeing mother of the eyes”.

Greek drama is full of allusions to the link between the eye and the sun. Aeschylus in Prometheus Bound refers to the ‘all seeing circle of the sun’.

The eye to menace the wheel of the sun- Aristophanes

The Greeks thought of the sun and the moon as the eyes of the animate sky like Vedic Hindus.

In Oedipus Colonius, Sophocles writes, ‘may the all seeing sun give you  such a sad old age as mine’.

This is similar to Hindu Brahmins daily prayer (Daily Sandhya Vandana in the afternoon) where the man asks for 100 year happy life looking at Sun. The mantra finishes with ‘look at Sun’ and the man looks at the sun with his crossed fingers. Without looking at the bright Sun Light directly Hindus make a small hole via the crossed fingers of both the hands.

LET US SEE SUN FOR 100 YEARS

Here again the Hindus confirm the link between the Sun and Eye. Here is the daily afternoon prayer of Hindus (I recite this Mantra everyday in London):-

Pashyema saradas satam

Jeevema saradas satam

Nandaama saradas satam

Modaama saradas satam

Bhavaama saradas satam

Shrunavaama saradas satam

Prabhravaama saradas satam

Ajeetaashyaama saradas satam

Jyok cha sooryam  druse saradas satam

May we look at sun for 100 years

May we thus live for 100 years

May we be delighted for 100 years

May we be happy for 100 years

May we excel in all for 100 years

May we speak and hear for 100 years

May we be unconquerable for 100 years

In this way we would like to see Sun………………….

This is found in all the Vedas with slight difference in wordings.

In the thrice a day worship of Brahmins there are many more mantras on Sun God. I chose this particular verse because it is chanted when one sees the Sun through gap created by locking both the hands.

Xxx

Here is the proof to show that Greeks borrowed it from us:

In the most famous Wedding Mantra in the Rig Veda (10-85)

“One of the pair (Sun) sees all existing things; the other orders seasons and born again- 10-85-18

This is a reference to Sun and Moon. It is found in Wedding Mantra which is used even today unlike the Greek verses!

Another Rig Vedic reference sounds more interesting!

Yama’s son says in 10-16-3

“The Sun receives your Eye; the Wind your Spirit”

Again this is a funeral hymn. This means the dead person’s eye goes to the sun whereas his breath mingles with the atmospheric wind. Here we may interpret Eye and Sun as light. Most of the funeral hymns in Hindu Vedas say that the dead person becomes light and travels upward.

xxx

10-37-1 is praising Sun God ‘Surya’-

“Do homage unto Varuna’s and Mitra’s Eye; offer this solemn worship to the mighty god

Who sees faraway, the ensign, born of gods. Sing praise unto Surya, to the son of Dyaus”

Even today millions of Hindus pray to Sun God and do Surya Namaskar.

xxx

The Gayatri Mantra found in all the four Vedas is also about Sun. Gayatri represents Energy, Power, Sakti. In Hinduism Shakti or Power is always shown as Goddess.

Xxx

EGYPT

Egyptians also borrowed the concept of eye representing sun.

The perception of the sun as an eye is related to its role as an ‘all seeing judge in the universe’. This is repeated in the Vedas as an attribute to Varuna and Surya.

In Egypt , on images of the sun god the eye portrayed on a solar disc could represent the head of the divinity.

In Egypt, Greece and India the all seeing role of the sun gave it an association with the eye.

Egyptians also saw the sun as all seeing eye like the hindus. Sun is symbolised by an eye as in the case of Horus , the youthful Egyptian sun god. He is also portrayed as a hawk in other places. The characteristic stylization of his eye, the Udjat eye , was considered a powerful amulet.

Eyes of St.Lucia

St .Lucia is another example of a goddess whose eyes are significant to her cult, as they become one of her emblems. The eye of Saint Lucia of the Mediterranean is a natural operculum that is worn in jewellery, a lucky charm in Corsica! . these are sea shells collected from the Mediterranean Sea (In Tamil it is called Ravavan muzi in Rameswaram).

HINDU DISCOVERY – SUN IS A STAR! (Post No.7526)

Sun is a star according to modern science. There are billions and billions of suns. Most of them are bigger than our sun. Our sun is a yellow colour star, i.e. mediocre one. Blue and red colour stars are more powerful and hotter. The world thought that these are modern discoveries. But it is already in our Vedas!

Before I give my comments read what A A Macdonell and A B Keith said in 1912.

‘Surya – Nakshatra’

“Surya – Nakshatra is found in Satapata Brahmana (2-1-2-19) in a passage where Sayana takes it denoting a nakshatra/star which gives out rays of light like sun. But the real sense (as the Kanva  text helps to show)  is that the sacrificer may take the sun for his nakshatra – i.e. he may neglect the nakshatras altogether and rely on the sun”.

Page 468, volume 2, Vedic Index

My Comments

All the world literature compared stars with fire flies or little lamps at a distance or candle light till the modern science informed the world that our Sun is also a star. But Vedic rishis always associated Sun with Star or Stars with sun. It is amazing to see that the Vedic seers spoke about sun and star at one breadth.

Look at the first sentence ‘star which gives light like Sun’. 200 years ago, if anyone read it, the person would have thought that it is just an exaggeration.

Sayana wrote the commentary in the 14th century. Satapata Bramana was written around 850 BCE according to the Westerners. But Hindus believe it is older than that.

I don’t jump to conclusion based on a single passage.

In fact, it is even in Rig Veda, the oldest book in the world.

Macdonell and Keith again,

Nakshatra

Nakshatra is a word of obscure origin and derivation.  The Indian interpreters already show a divergence of opinion as to its primary meaning. The Satapata Brahmana resolves into ‘na- ksatra = no power’ explaining it by a legend. The Niruka refers it to the root ‘nak’s ‘obtain’ following the Taittriya Brahmana

Aufrecht and Weber derived it from ‘nakta-tra’ ‘guardian of night’, and more recently the derivation from ‘nak- ksatra’ ‘having rule over night’, seems  to be gaining acceptance. The generic meaning of the word therefore seems to be star. (English word Night came from Sanskrit ‘Nakt’

English word star is derived from Sanskrit ‘tara’ for star.

xxx

The Nakshatras as stars in the Rig Veda and later-

The sense of star appears to be adequate for all or  nearly all the passages  in which Naksatras occur in the Rig Veda. The same sense occurs in the later Samhitas also; the sun and the Naksatras mentioned together;  or the sun, moon, the Naksatras  or the moon and the Naksatras or  the Naksatras alone .

–Page 409, volume 1, Vedic Index

For al the above, both of them, have given references from the Vedic literature.

MY COMMENTS

I am going to comment on only one thing in the above passage.

There is nothing interesting if some poet sings about ‘twinkle, twinkle little star up above the world so high’.

There is nothing significant if a poet sings about star’ like a diamond in the sky ‘ with moon. A child even can sing about it. Throughout Tamil and Sanskrit literature we read star girls are after moon man, in Hindu mythology moon is masculine and stars are feminine. Moon is always loved by 27 wives/ 27 stars

But when one sings about ‘sun and star together’ one raises one’s eyebrow. One wonders what! stars tiny specs of light in the night and sun is million times brighter in the day!

But  Vedic poets sing them together in

Atharva Veda – 6-10-3; Vajasaneyi Samhita 23-43 and in a few other places.

More important is the Rig Vedic mantra 6-67-6

ता हि कषत्रं धारयेथे अनु दयून दरंहेथे सानुमुपमादिव दयोः |
दर्ळ्हो नक्षत्र उत विश्वदेवो भूमिमातान दयां धासिनायोः ||

tā hi kṣatraṃ dhārayethe anu dyūn dṛṃhethe sānumupamādiva dyoḥ |
dṛḷho nakṣatra uta viśvadevo bhūmimātān dyāṃ dhāsināyoḥ ||6-67-6

Here is Griffith’s translation 100 years ago-

“So, through the days, maintaining princely power, ye  prop the height as it were from loftiest heavens.

The star of al the gods, established filleth the heaven and earth with food of man who liveth”.

Star of All Gods

In the foot note Griffith says,

The Star of all Gods- SUN

In RV 7-86-1, the poet says

dhīrā tvasya mahinā janūṃṣi vi yastastambha rodasī cidurvī |
para nākaṃ ṛṣvaṃ nunude bṛhantaṃ dvitā nakṣatrampaprathacca bhūma |

“Wise, verily, are creatures through his greatness who  stayed ever , spacious heaven and earth asunder;

Who urged the mighty sky to motion, the Star of Old, and spread the earth before him”

Here also Griffith’s foot note says the star = the SUN

Nowadays we praise someone who has achieved something with the words YOU ARE A STAR. Sometimes we comment she is a star or he is a star. This expression is found for the first time in the Rig Veda

It is interesting to see that one compares star with sun another praises sun as star. So, we can boldly conclude that the Vedic rishis knew sun is a star.
