Gentleman or Not?

The Vicar of Sheffield, the Rev.Dr.Sutton, once said to the late Dr Peech, “I never ask a gentleman for money”.

Indeed, said the vicar, then how do you get it if he doesn’t pay?

“Why, replied Dr Peech , after a certain time I conclude he is not a gentleman, and then I ask him”.

Sheridan

A friend once observed to Sheridan, “Being of an illustrious Irish family, it is strange that your name has not an “O” prefixed to it.

“True, replied Sheridan, no family has a better right to it. We owe everybody”.

Pessimism Anecdote

On the subject of calamity howlers, the story is told of the gala crowd that had assembled for the test run of Robert Fultons outlandish steamboat contraption ‘The Clermont’. For some hours, in the presence of a mass of spectators, the strange craft belched smoke and sparks from its tall, thin stack as his engineers attempted to get up the necessary head of steam. When the time to cast off had come and the engines were being limbered up, the boat quivered and vibrated violently and made a loud racket.

A group of doubting Thomasses in the crowd had been shouting loudly and scornfully, “She will never start! She will never start!”  But notwithstanding this, the boat pulled itself together and actually started to move up the river.

After a moment of astonished silence, the voices of the scoffers resumed their shouts; this time crying with all the scorn they could muster, “She will never stop! She will never stop!”
