Hindus use holy water taken from sea, lakes and rivers for bathing kings, gods, and on special occasions, ordinary people. During big Yagnas (Fire Sacrifices) and temple consecration (Kumbha Abishekam) ceremonies water is brought from different holy places. Tamil and Sanskrit inscriptions praise certain kings bathing everyday in water brought from four different seas. This is to show that they control all the four directions, i.e. the countries in all four directions.
Someone has done a painstaking work by compiling names of the holy rivers and holy sarovars/lakes in different parts of India . This was published in a souvenir on the occasion of a Shivratri Yagna performed in London several years ago.
