There are lot of statements about semen and sperm in Tamil and Sanskrit literature . Hindus believed that saving semen would give them strength and good memory power. It is called URDHVA RETAS. Literally sending ‘semen upwards’.

Puranas have many stories of Rishis (seers) shedding semen in cups and leaves and transferring to women. Most of which sounds like Test Tube babies and artificial insemination.

Following is taken from wisdom library:

Urdhva retas

one who lives in perpetual celibacy or abstains from sexual intercourse; यतीनामूर्ध्वरेतसाम् (yatīnāmūrdhvaretasām) Mb.3.233.44. (-m.)

1) Name of Śiva.

2) Bhīṣma (who vowed not to marry)

Ūrdhvaretas is a Sanskrit compound consisting of the terms ūrdhva and retas (रेतस्).

Ūrdhvaretas (ऊर्ध्वरेतस्).—[adjective] chaste (lit. having the semen above).

  1. Ūrdhvaretas (ऊर्ध्वरेतस्):—[=ūrdhva-retas] [from ūrdhva] mfn. keeping the semen above, living in chastity, [Gautama-dharma-śāstra; Mahābhārata; Harivaṃśa; Kathāsaritsāgara] etc.

Sri Ramakrishna and Vivekananda

“If one practises celibacy, a physiological change is produced in the body. A rudimentary nerve known as Medha will develop, the function of which is to transmute the lower energies in to higher. The knowledge of the higher Self is gained after the development of the Medha Nadi”.

Swami Vivekananda added some more interesting details about celibacy:- He says a person who observed celibacy for twelve years obtains tremendous memory power. Swami could remember anything he read, page after page. When someone wanted to test his thought reading power, he told the person even his disciple could do it who was sitting just beside him. The disciple was so scared to hear this, because he did not have that power. But when Swami Vivekananda told his disciple to read the person’s mind, he did it. Swami attributed everything to celibacy. In short, one can develop tremendous powers if one observed celibacy at three levels= Tri Karana Suddhi= word, thought and deed.

Tamil Siddhas on Sex Energy

Gorakkar, one of the 18 great siddhas , advises sick people taking herbal medicine  to have union with women after taking cool milk with palm sugar. He adds ,

The cool milk along with the medicine mentioned earlier will help increase manliness and give joy with women. He talks about ‘lekiyam’ in verses 12 and 13 of karpa cuustiram  (Kalpa sutra)

The commentator explains ,

Lekiyam – medicine brought to the consistency of a paste. This will help manliness and give joy with women without expenditure of semen by emission.  It is like  Tamil Viagra.  In Buddhism ulta- sadhana is referred to as the culture of bodhi -citta , semen virile. In alchemy mercury symbolises semen and alchemist tries to find out ways and means of converting into a hard metal i.e. gold and using it for transubstantiation of body

Ulta- sadhana  (the contrary practice of  sublimating semen)  and alchemy  (a process of hardening semen  )  are the two esoteric and exoteric methods of kaya sadhana – transformation of the body  into an immortal essence. In the previous verses and in this verse

Gorakkar suggests  the medicinal way of sublimating semen to an adamantine body.

Greeks on sex and the games

The one time world heavy weight boxing champion Lennox Lewis , arguing that women weakened a boxer, avoided sex for three weeks before a big fight.  The theory has  certainly  been around for some time. In the ancient world it was based on the idea that semen was a vital factor in keeping a man strong.

The doctor    Aretaeus , in the first century CE said-“

“If any man is possession of semen, he is fierce, courageous, and physically mighty like beasts. Evidence for this is to be found in athletes  who practise   abstinence.

Even involuntary nocturnal emissions were thought to be enfeebling, threatening one’s endurance, and breathing. The doctor Galen , in the second century CE recommended that athletes take precautions

Sex before exercise was criticized;

Exercise before sex was strongly recommended.

Manu on semen

“Once upon a time the universe was made up of darkness.  Then the lord who is self existent, himself  unmanifest, putting his energy into the great  elements  and everything else, he became visible and dispelled the darkness.  He thought deeply , for he wished to emit various sorts of creatures from his own body. First, he emitted the waters and then he emitted his semen in them.  That semen became a golden egg.  As bright as the sun with his 1000 rays. Brahma himself, the grand father of all people, was born in that egg.

Manu mentioned semen in other places as well.

In short, Greeks identified  semen with  physical strength ; Hindus identified it with spiritual strength.

A recent report published in the Journal of Medical Ethics has argued that doctors should be able to take sperm from men who have passed away if they have consented to becoming post-mortem donors.

The authors state that doing so is “both feasible and morally permissible”, as it may help to ensure that “sufficient quantities of sperm“ are made available to individuals who wish to become parents through sperm donation.

So where does the law in the UK currently stand with regards to sperm donation? Here is everything you need to know.

Who is eligible to donate sperm?

According to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), sperm donors are usually aged between 18 and 41.

Carrots and lettuce linked to better sperm quality

Thursday 31 October 2013

“The secret to healthy sperm? Carrots,” the Mail Online website declares. The study it reports on found that certain vegetables may help improve sperm quality.

The researchers carrying out the study were interested in two important aspects of sperm quality:

  • sperm motility – how quickly a sperm can swim towards an egg
  • sperm morphology – the size and shape of a sperm (for the best chance of successfully conceiving, a sperm should have an oval head and a long tail)

They looked at young men’s diets and analysed their sperm samples. They found that men who ate a higher amount of three antioxidants found in fruit and vegetables had sperm with better motility and morphology.

The three antioxidants in question were:

  • beta-carotene – found in carrots, lettuce and spinach
  • lutein – found in lettuce and spinach
  • lycopene – found in tomatoes
  • tags – semen, sperm, Tamil Viagra, Sexy foods
