London Hindu devotees gathered in thousands today in Ealing to have the darshan of Goddess Kanaka Durga. Every year the Sri Lankan run Hindu temple Kanaga Thurkai amman temple holds an annual Ratha Yatra ( Chariot Procession ) in Ealing area of London. From the early morning silk sari clad Tamil women with lot of jasmine flowers on their heads accompanied by their Veshti (dhoti) clad men and children gathered there. Scores of people rolled on the roads to offer worship. It is called Anga Pradakshina. Hundreds of Hindu women held Milk Pots on their heads and walked along with the Goddess procession. It is called Paal Kudam in Tamil. Scores of Hindu women held Fire Pots in their hands with margosa leaves (Neem leaves) support. It is called Thee Chatti in Tamil. Apart from this,  hundreds and hundreds of women walked with the goddess procession with Coconut, Banana plates to offer to Goddess.

Police made elaborate security arrangements to maintain the flow of traffic smoothly. Free food was offered in the near by park. The enthusiasm of Tamil community turned Ealing area into a Hindu temple complex at least for two to three hours.

Hindu Gods and Goddess are so merciful and compassionate, they come out of the temple at least once a year in Big Chariots to bless the people who come across their paths. This is a unique feature of Hinduism. Whether you go to temple or not , the gods come out to bless you and no one can miss them because they are placed in the highest place in a chariot called Ther in Tamil. In India, chariots are as high as temple towers, that is 150 to 200 feet tall.

Hare Krishna movement popularised chariot festivals across the world. All the major cities hold annual chariot festivals. The biggest event happen in Puri Jagannath Temple in Orissa in India. The Rath Yatra there attracts millions of people every year.
