Satyavan-Savitri story from Vana Parva of Mahabharata continued…………………

Savitri

Near my husband no place can be too far.

Human beings do not trust even themselves as they trust the saints; it is from love trust arises and because the saints have love for all, people have trust in them.

Yama

Blessed one! What you have said that I have not heard before except from you. It gives me great satisfaction. excepting the life of Satyavan, ask for a fourth boon and go back.

Savitri

May I with Satyavan have   hundred sons, who brave and courageous, will continue our family line. This is the fourth boon I seek from you, Lord of Death.

And the Lord of Death granted that wish of Savitri as well. You will have hundred sons, who brave and courageous, who will enhance your happiness. Now go back, he said to her.

Savitri

With the power of truth, the saints keep sun on its course and sustain the earth. It is from the saints that the present, the past and the future derive their support, being with the saintly, people do not suffer.

Given to the good of the others, selflessly, the saints do not look upon each other with narrow concerns of the self.

The blessings of the saints never in vain. Nobody feels reduced by the saints, nor anybody’s self-interest suffer. In the nearness of the saints the three get united: blessings, self-esteem and the self-interest. the saints are thus protectors of the world.

Yama

The more you speak, and say in words most elegant, the things that I have deep meaning and are agreeable to mind and heart, the greater grows my feelings of bhakti for you. Ask from me, some exceptional boon.

Savitri

You have bestowed upon me the boon of having a hundred sons of my own that cannot come true without my union with my husband, whose life you are taking away. Therefore, I seek from you this last boon that Satyavan restored to life, for without him I am like dead. Without my husband, I have no desire for the prosperities of the world, nor any desire for any heavenly existence. Without him I do not even with to live.

Saying THATHAASTU (that shall be so) Yama released from the cord of mortality.

The Mahabharata shows how one’s pain is because of the pain of the other; Satyavan’s pain at the pain of anxiety of his father and mother and Savitri’s pain for both. To reassure Satyavan wiping his tears, she spoke to him thus:

Savitri

If I have ever done Tapasya (penance) in its true discipline, then may this night be blessed both for my mother-in-law and father-in-law and blessed for my husband.

They reached home from the dark forest as fast as they could.

All the seers from nearby Ashramas including Suvarcha, Gautama, Bharadwaj, Dhalbha, Ghaumya praised Savitri’s victory over Yama.

The goddess of prosperity or fortune, and the goddess of adversity or misfortune, two sisters, mentioned in this proverb, exercise a mysterious influence over the minds of the vulgar. These remarkable beings are said to have been produced when the celestials, in search of ambrosia, churned the milky ocean. The opinion expressed in the proverb is also contained in a stanza of Niti neri villakkam a poem on moral subjects, justly admired by the learned, for the terseness and beauty of its composition, as well as for the general purity of its moral sentiments. The poet says:-

“When the goddess of prosperity finds that her favours are not appreciated, she introduces her elder sister, the goddess of adversity, to the sluggard, and then takes her departure.”

The goddess of fortune, whose presence is a guarantee for happiness andprosperity, is said to dwell in the face of a horse of superior caste, -with the wise and good,-in all fragrant flowers,-in the tree of paradise that bestows whatever it’s votaries may desire,-in the beauty ofa good and obedient wife, -in the ocean,-in the portal of a house where a marriage is being celebrated,-in a well governed country,-in grain in brilliant lamps and flaming torches,-in the words of the great,-with truth-speaking men,-in the arrows of Cupid, -and in vessels of milk.

Tirukkural was translated by Kavi Yogi in prose and poetry .

KAVI YOGI SHUDDANANDA BHARATI (11 May 1897 – 7 March 1990)

Spurning the glitter of God

Forlorn I left my home

A pilgrim soul calm and bold

Taking refuge in Thy name.

Minakshi, O Mother of Love

Thy grace guided me from above

It is with me then and now

And its glory I can prove.

In the thick of mental fight

In dark despair, dreadful glens

A lightning smile removed the night

And illumined my existence

Thy dawn-like form, Thy fawn like gait

Thy fire like purity

Thy bird like voice and sun like sight

O Thy simplicity.

Thy benign hands streaming with gifts

Thy heart so large and kind

Thy limitless grace uplifts

To godhood aspiring mankind.

Wiped are my tears

At the thought of Thy Grace

Driven are my fears

At the sight of Thy face

Thy faith is my strength

Thy love is my wealth

Thy service is my creed

From worries I am freed.

Picture of Kavi Yogi

Thou singest in my soul

The song that is for all

Thou feedest my hunger

To be Thy silent singer

Minakshi, Thy magic name

Is a delightful thrill

That wins the frightful game

Of life which in Thee full

Lead me to love Thee more and more

In all beings high and low

Live O Light in my heart’s core

And bless my act with a Jai HO.

God Almighty never shut eye.

After God, then the white people.

Everyday Devil help thief, one day God help watchman

(In Tamil we  say Pala naal thirudan our naal agappaduvaan, meaning many day thief will be caught one day ).

–Negro

****

One may go around a ravine or around a hill, but one cannot go around God.

God gives and doesn’t remind us continually of it; the world gives and constantly reminds us.

No one who trusts in God will ever fall .

(Tamil Poet Bharati also said this; whoever trusts in God will never fail; this is the conclusion of Four Vedas)

God will outlive eternity.

God who made the mouth will not close it up (i.e. Lord will provide.

(This is in Tamil as well; Padaiththavan Padi alappaan, meaning Creator will measure the grains  (for the person created).

God knew how to hide the shame (nakedness) of the maize with the husks.

–Nupe (Northern Nigeria)

****

Call upon the name of God and ask for what is good for you.

God does not kill everyone with a club, but takes away his understanding.

God has never spoken except to an Arab.

If God is our friend, our business is accomplished.

Where God is, there is everything.

God loves good accounts.

There are no two together but God makes a third.

Hurry is of the devil, but slow advancing comes from God.

Oriental Proverbs.

The liberal man is the friend of God.

What can your enemies do if you enjoy the favour of God?

You can’t have both God and dates.

If you have God as your protector, what affliction have you?

God gives much cold to the well clad, but little to those who lack clothing.

God has in store many hidden mercies.

Your saviour is your deeds and God Himself.

God is a tray of plunder.

God provides the Dervish’s kitchen

God rights him that keeps silence.

God will not seek thy race nor will He ask thy birth; alone He will demand of thee what hast thou on earth?

God’s club makes no noise; when it strikes no cure for the blow.

The legs of those who require proof of God’s existence are made of wood.

To do things quickly is of Satan, because God works slowly.

When God wills the destruction of an ant , He gives it wings.

–Persian

****

You will noy buy much with God Bless You.

Fear God and next to God, him that has no fear of God.

Trust in God and put your shoulder to the wheel.

Offer the candle to God, and to the devil the butt.

Hold God by the feet, and he devil by the horns.

God can shave without soap.

God did not join Brains with Beauty.

When praising God, do not bow to the devil.

To him whom, God favours ,a bitch will  bear a litter of pigs.

To him who rises early God gives.

God gives the wideness of the mouth according to the bigness of the spoon.

Man shoots, but God guides the bullet .

God has given all to all and not all to one.

God has given; God has taken.

What God has given will not be taken away by envy; what God has not given will fall out of your hands.

When it pleases God, He likewise gives behind the hearth.

Thou wouldest do little for God if the devil were dead.

He who swims with God never goes to the bottom.

Where God puts one finger the devil puts his whole hand.

God saves the moon from the wolves.

Man carries the powder and God the bullets.

God will afflict; God will console.

God will help a ploughing man.

If God wills even a cock will lay an egg.

(In Sanskrit they say even a dumb will speak fluently, even a lame will climb the mountain)

When God wishes to punish, He will deprive of his reason.

In time of need one turns first to God and then to Jew.

In want to the Jew; in distress to the priest; in fear, to God.

  • Show me God, only then will I believe?
Most of us can’t even meet the President of a small country on this insignificant planet. So how can we meet the President of millions of universes?
God is not our servant who will come in front of us whenever we desire it. If we want to see Him, then we have to accept His terms.
Have you seen Japan? No! But you still believe there is a country called Japan, even though you have not seen it. You are willing to accept the authority of world maps created by people and also the words of people who have seen Japan. Why not accept the authority of the eternal Vedic scriptures which state that Lord Krishna is the Supreme person, who has appeared more than 18,000 times in His original form (same body) and each time proving He is the Supreme person. Why not accept the authority of millions of Vedic followers who have seen Lord Krishna?

What is the evidence for God?

The scientists and atheists say there is no God:

  •                 Can any scientist create life? Every second God is creating trillions of living beings in various forms. This is evidence of God

  •                 Everything on this planet is maintained by living beings, so who is maintaining everything beyond this planet? This is evidence of God

  •                 Can any scientist create trees that produce fruits and vegetables? This is evidence of God

  •                 The cow takes water and grass and turns it into milk. Can any scientist do this? This is evidence
of God

  •                 According to the scientists, it would take over 400 billion nuclear weapons to produce the same
amount of heat that the sun produces in just 1 second, and the sun has been doing this for at least 15 billion years according to the scientists themselves. Can the scientists replicate the sun, even for 1 second? This is evidence of God

  •                 The sun always rises and sets on time, and the seasons come and go on time. Is this by chance? This is evidence of God

  •                 The legs of trillions of living beings, including humans are 100% of the same length. Is this by chance? This is evidence of God

  •                 Why is there a variety of living beings? Can a manufacturing company produce anything without the input from a person? This is evidence of God

  •                 Every human face is unique, is this by chance? Can a manufacturing company produce unique products without any input from a person? This is evidence of God

  •                 The human body is symmetrical (both halves are 100% same). Is this by chance? This is evidence of God

  •                 Why doesn’t the donkey think like a human and vice versa? This is evidence of God

  •                 If you throw some bricks on the ground, will they form into a house? Without a spiritual being,
the bricks cannot be formed into anything. Do the atoms combine to form certain molecules by chance? No. It’s Krishna (God) who is present in every atom who combines the atoms to form specific molecules .

MORE CHURCH ANECDOTES

There had been a series of severe electrical storm s In Oorange, New Jersey and the vestrymen of a certain church in that town had discussed the advisability of placing lightning rods on the edifice. So they went on to call Thomas Edison, the inventor, to get his opinion.

“I think, Sir”, said their spokesperson, “the lightning rods are a mighty good thing on a building. What do you think?”
“What sort of building is this ?” Asked Edison impatiently.

“A church”.

“By all means put them on”, said the great inventor.
“You know Provident is absent minded sometimes”.

PICK POCKETS  IN SYNAGOGUE

Harpo Marx is not a religious man. He has never entered a synagogue but once since his Bar Mitzvah. On this occasion he entered a synagogue in search of his bootlegger. He got his pocket picked.

President , I am not sure, but God will be there!

One day the telephone in the office of the Rector of  President

Roosevelt ‘s Washington Church rang and an eager voice said,

“Tell me, do you expect the president to be in church this Sunday?”
That, the rector explained patiently,
“I can’t promise. However, God will be there and that will be incentive enough for a reasonably large attendance”.

ONE TOOT, YOU AARE OOT

JEROME D ENGEL

In the later years of his ministry, the southern preacher Jerome D Engel, became slightly hard of hearing. A legend has it that at one service during the announcement period, Engel informed the congregation about new hymnal S which were being ordered and which were to be purchased individually by the congregation. When he had finished the announcement, the Deacon of the church rose to remind the audience that the following Sunday was the regular day for the baptism of infants.

Engel, not hearing clearly, and thinking that the deacon had made reference to the books, hastily added,

All you who haven’t any , can get as many as you want, by calling on me, at 75 cent a piece.

Why do we need a Guru? A spiritual teacher. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and an anonymous Tamil poets give different answers.

An anonymous Tamil poet in the Tamil didactic work Neethi Venpa says:

God is like wild fire and Guru is like a lamp. When we need heat, and fire we don’t go to wild fire. We just use the lamp to drive darkness or light another lamp or to get fire to light the oven or gas stove. God’s grace is everywhere, but not all of us can use it. A little lamp can be used by every one. Gurus are like the lamps, easily accessible and usable.

Chess Game and Guru

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa says,

At a game of chess, the on-lookers ca tell what the correct move is, better than the players themselves. Men of the world think that they are very clever, but they are attached to the things of the world – money, honours sense pleasures etc. As they are actually engaged in the play, it is hard for them to hit upon the right move.

Holy men who have given up the world are not attached to worldly objects. They are like the on-lookers at a game of chess.  They see things in their true light and can judge men better than the men of the world. Hence, in living the holy life, one must put faith only in the words of those who meditate upon god and who have realised Him. If you seek legal advice, will you not consult lawyers who are in the profession? Surely you will not take the advice of the man in the street.

Single Guru is a Must:

What is the necessity of calling a particular man our Guru instead of  calling everyone who teaches us something by that designation? When going to a strange country, one must abide by the  directions of the guide who knows the way. Taking the advice of many would lead to utter confusion. So in trying to reach God one must implicitly follow the advice of one single guru who knows the way to God.

24 Upa Gurus!

The Guru is only one but Upa Gurus (subsidiary teachers) may be many. He is an Upa guru from anything whatsoever is learned. The Great Avadhuta, (an ascetic of a high order in the Bhagavata) had 24 such upa gurus.
