AROUND THE WORLD SEVERAL DOGS HAVE BEEN HONOURED FOR THEIR SERVICE IN THE ARMY AND PUBLIC LIFE. THEY WERE EVEN AWARDED MEDALS FOR THEIR SERVICE IN THE WORLD WARS. BUT TAMILS WERE THE FIRST TO ERECT A STATUE FOR IT 1400 YEARS AGO

Rig Veda dog SARAMA and Mahabharata Dog that walked with the Pandavas to death may be more famous; but we don’t have statues for them. Tokyo Dog Hachiko may have a statue in front of the railway station. But even before that Tamils sculpted a dog to say, ‘THANK YOU’.

Here are the details

Location – Eduthanur in Sengam area of North Arcot District, Tamil Nadu, India

Name of the Dog – KOVIVAN

Year of the Hero Stone Sculpture – 34th Regnal Year of Mahendra Pallava

Approximately 624 CE

Mahendra Varman was crowned in 590 CE while his father Simha Vishnu was alive. Historians calculate that he ruled for 39 years. This included the period while his father was officially the king.

THE STORY OF THE DOG

Why was it honoured in a Hero Stone?

A villager named Karundeva kathi was guarding the cattle of the village. Robbers came to take away the cattle and other property.

He fought with robbers heroically and the dog helped him in the fight. Unfortunately, he was killed along with the dog in the fight.

Grateful Tamils sculpted the dog in the Hero Stone and inscribed both the names of the dog and his master.

Sources book – SENGAM NADU KARKAL, DR R NAGASAMY, DIRECTOR OF ARCHAEOLOGY, TAMIL NADU, 1972

Tamil Poet Tiruvalluvar has composed ten couplets on gratefulness.

Valluvar says

A help rendered in time of need , however small it may be , should be regarded as much larger than even the world –

-Tirukkural 102

The value of help rendered without any expectation of recompense is larger than even the ocean .

-Tirukkural 103

The noble minded will remember for seven births the friendship of those who saved them from affliction.

-Tirukkural 107

There may be forgiveness for any sin but not for ingratitude.

-Tirukkural 110

The couplet 110 is in Sangam Literature book Purananuru verse 34, Valmiki Ramayana and Pancha Tantra stories of Vishnu Sarman.
