Kumbh Mela in Haridwar

Hindu pilgrims descended on the banks of the Ganges river in HARIDWAR ON Thursday, shrugging off Covid-19 risks for the start of the Kumbh Mela, a religious festival that regularly attracts millions.

“The pandemic is a bit of a worry, but we are taking all precautions,” said organiser Siddharth Chakrapani, who expected between 800,000 and a million people to attend on FIRST  DAY alone.

“I’m sure Maa Ganga will take care of their safety,” he added, referring to the river considered holy by the faithful.

According to Hindu mythology, gods and demons fought a war over a sacred pitcher containing the nectar of immortality. Drops fell at four different locations, which now alternate as hosts for the immense gatherings. Every four years Mini Kumbha Melas are held in different locations

Maha Kumbh Mela is recognised as a piece of intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, and its last edition — in Prayag in 2019 — attracted around 55 million people over 48 days. That is held once in 12 years.

This year, beginning Thursday, Haridwar is the host, and several million people are expected to throng the holy city in Uttarakhand state over the coming seven weeks.

Holy men known as ‘sadhus’ are a regular feature at the Kumbh Mela, camping by the river and offering blessings to those who come for the holy immersion.

This week brings several other religious festivals in India, including the Gangasagar in Kolkata where officials expect around 15,000 people.

Madurai in the southern state of Tamil Nadu  hosted a bull-chasing carnival known as Jallikattu, where revellers grab hold of the beasts’ horns as they run through crowds of people.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy participated in the Kamadhenu Puja in Guntur district on Friday

The authorities of Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanams conducted Kamadhenu puja atop Indrakeeladri on the occasion of Kanuma on Friday.

The ‘go puja’ was simultaneously held at 2,679 temples across the State by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams as part of promoting Sanatana Hindu Dharma.

Speaking to the media, temple executive officer MV Suresh Babu said the gopuja will be conducted daily from now onwards and the devotees can also participate in the ritual.

The Executive Officer said that Chaturveda Homam will be performed at the temple from January 18 to 25. He also explained the importance of cow worship in the Hindu religion

IN THE MEANTIME……………………………….

Telugu Desam leaders met Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan on Thursday and submitted a representation seeking a CBI probe into the series of attacks on temples in ANDHRA PRADESH in recent days. They also sought removal of the Jagan-led government and imposition of President’s rule in the state.

THEY informed the governor that 140 temples were attacked since the YSR Congress came to power. This, they said, was a violation of fundamental rights of the people and dilution of Articles 25 and 26 providing religious freedom to the people.

The Telugu Desam leaders alleged allotment of shops in Srisailam temple in violation of GO No. 426 to non-Hindus. The presence of these non-Hindus was affecting the sanctity of the temple as they sold meat, liquor and drugs, it was alleged

Makaravilakku IN Sabari Malai

Lakhs of Ayyappa devotees witnessed ‘Makara  jyothi’ in Sabarimala on 14th January.

Sabarimalai  hill temple, which used to witness a heavy rush on the occasion every year, was thronged by only a few thousand pilgrims due to the strict safety guidelines in place in the wake of the virus outbreak.

As per the government directive, only 5,000 pilgrims were permitted to climb the holy hills to offer prayers on the day, according toTravancore Devaswom Board (TDB) officials .

The portals of the shrine was thrown open after the ”deeparadhana” which was performed to the idol of Lord Ayyappa adorned with the holy jewels, ”Thiruvabharanam”.

The jewels were brought here, moments before the ”arti”, in a ceremonial procession, which started its journey a couple of days earlier from the Pandalam palace, where, according to legend, Lord Ayyappa was born and spent his childhood.

The ”Saranam Ayyappa” chants intensified when the ”makara jyothi”, considered a divine light by devotees, flickered across the eastern horizon above the Ponnambalamedu soon after the arti.

Meanwhile, state Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran earlier said here that the Left government was prepared to extend all support for the developmentof Sabarimala.

Indicating the fall in revenue collection at the hill temple, he said only Rs 16 crore was collected till Tuesday in this season compared to the revenue of Rs 260 crore last year.

The minister also requested devotees to extend all help to the hill shrine.
