Dr V S Mani of Amersham (Greater London) has written more than six books including novels. He has very good experience in the field publishing books, particularly in e book formats. He has already conducted a seminar for Gnanamayam listeners a few months ago. After the seminar our listeners asked some questions and I sent them to Dr V S Mani. He has answered those queries live on 22-8-2021 via Gnanamayam Broadcast from London.

Dr Mani has obtained his doctorate in Metallurgy and was a G P Surgery manager as well. He is one of the pillars of South Indian Society in the UK.

Mrs Uma Prasad from Dubai has helped him in proof reading and she also appeared on our shows in the past.

With his permission I am publishing his written copy. Those who want to listen to him , may go to Facebook.com/gnanamayam

LISTENERS QUESTIONS SENTTO DR V S MANI FOR 23-8-2021 INTERVIEW ON GANAMAYAM BROADCAST

Dr Mani speaks,

“I have sent my replies to Swaminathan in the email which you all could get a copy. You may contact me through Swaminathan for further clarifications

For publishing, one must have a book ready, which is the first step to consider.  Whether it comes as e-book or paperback or hard back format is next step.

Other steps are important in making the above decisions and these relate to costs and publishers.

WHAT ARE THE STEPS IN MAKING E BOOKS ?

You should have a book to publish. Is it ready for publishing?

Has it been proof-read, checked and corrected? If the answers are positive, you are ready to publish a book

WHAT ARE THE PITFALLS IN IN E BOOK PUBLISHING?

For a wide market at very low pricing, nothing to beat e-books. Royalties, normally a pittance for paperbacks, would be still very low.

Also, remember because the price is low does not mean people would buy it. It depends on marketing, which usually is outside the domain of the writers.

WHAT IS YOUR EXPEREINECE IN EBOOK PUBLISHING?

All of the above I have stated. I preferred paperback but it comes with e-book sales as well.

THEY TALK ABOUT DIFFERENT FORMATS IN E BOOK PUBLISHING.

e-Book formats

  • PDF (. pdf) – A very popular eBook format from Adobe which most eReaders support.
  • EPUB (. epub) – An open eBook standard created by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). …
  • Kindle (. …
  • MobiPocket (. …
  • Text (.

I used Kindle only.

Bridging the gap between the eBook reader you have and the eBook content you want to use often requires a software middleman

Here are some of the most common free software solutions:

Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is an eBook management system, providing a way to organise and access your eBook library. It is also a core player in the eBook ecosystem of publishers, sellers and libraries. You will need to download and install the freely available ADE software before you can download and borrow most library eBook content. (PDF and HTML file formats excluded.)

For Apple, IPad and IPhone users who don’t choose to download the IBooks app. Bluefire Reader works with DRM-equipped Adobe eBooks, in both PDF and EPUB formats.

Calibre is a widely-used, open source option for converting between eBook formats.

Another freely-available eBook management system for Apple products.

CAN YOU ELABORATE ON IT? WHICH IS BETTER?

As I have used Kindle only, you are advised to read web about it and decide.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET IT ON E BOOK?

If the book, say, a novel is ready, then through Amazon, Kindle, usually within 2 to 3 weeks. They suggest few hours even.

DO YOU DO IT ON YOUR OWN OR LEAVE IT WITH SPECIALISED PEOPLE FOR IT?

I used various people. Amazon/Kindle first; then Indian agents; then a UK company which were not based here but in Boston and Indonesia; and finally, a Literary agent in Oxford. I will never use others. Always stick to local literary agents having contacts with publishers. I can give details of the agent I used and I do not get a penny for recommending clients. Even if they did, I would refuse to take it and plough back to the writers.

AMAZON, KINDLE  AND OTHERS ARE SAID TO HAVE  E BOOK FORMATS WHERE YOU CAN READILY UPLOAD. HAVE YOU TRIED THEM?

Yes. All the others, whoever you go through finally use Amazon/Kindle as they are the biggest distributors.

ARE PRINTED BOOKS SOLD MORE THAN KINDLE EDITIONS?

Not relevant as numbers mean nothing. Would 10 books in paper back compared to 20 e-book is totally of no use to the author who expects 50 to 100 times these numbers.

WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF PUBLISHING? WILL PRINTED BOOKS DISAPPEAR IN COURSE OF TIME?

I do not have a crystal ball to predict these. However, in my limited opinion, as long as people write about any subject, they would be motivated to publish it and self-publishing route would be used more.

However, contrary to popular belief, the industry is not at risk of dying – far from it. In fact, the industry has seen growth in the last few years, with book sales increasing in value by 1.4% in 2018 (according to Nielsen BookScan) – small growth, but growth nonetheless.28 Mar 2019

According to the latest ProQuest Bowker Report (October 15, 2019), nearly 1.7 million books were self-published in the U.S. in 2018, which is an incredible 264% increase in just five years.

Printed books would never disappear for several decades.

  1. could Tamil language books are accepted in Amazon kindle.

All languages are accepted as it would be seen and read by specialists in country like Amazon.in

  • how to prepare Tamil language books’.

There are scripts and software available to type in standard computer ipads, mac etc. I wrote in English only. Being away from India since 1965, my Tamil writing is old version used in Tanjore style not the current Chennai version.

  • is there any guidle line book informing us a step by step procedure.

I did not find one and the key is to get the writing done. The publishers would help but it costs money. Advice and such help do not come cheap.

  • to prepare an Ebook whale all the articles are available as Word document?

I wrote mine in word document only and will not change.

  • The Pricing: 5.99 $ means the author will get 70 %. If it is less say even %.98 $ the author will get only 30% remaining goes to Amazon?

With Amazon, my books selling at GBP 9, I get a royalty of 69 pence only.  60% goes to distributors – Amazon, Kindle; 40% to publishers who give 5% to writers.

Your 70% seems unreal to me but stick to them and do not leave them ever, please.

5)for 5.99$ pricing how many pages should be there for a book?

Anything less than 25000 words (say, 360 words for an A4 page) is classed as Novella.

Novels above 25000 words and typically 80000 to 90000 words.

Bigger ones may go to 125000 words.

A5 is usually size used. Novella may end up as 110 pages for this size.

  • Regarding cover page and last page is there anybody to design?

Usually, publishers charge but they do offer some limited FREE designs. Even local literary agents offer Free designs too.

  •  Are could we pick up from the available designs?

Yes.

Finally, I am grateful to have people sent queries and hope I had helped them to make up their minds on which way to publish. I wish you all more success than I have had with selling books and earning royalties.

My thanks to Swaminathan, his brother Nagarajan and Mrs Uma Parvati in reading your queries to me for me to answer.

With kind personal regards to all

Mani
