I HAVE WRITTEN THREE ARTCILES ON SAMUDRIKA LAKSHANA FROM 2012. PLEASE SEE THE LINKS AT THE END OF THIS ARTICLE

Samudrika lakshana is the study of body features of a man or woman and interpret his /her characteristics, behaviour etc. on the basis of the features. It is a Hindu science practised by Hindus for thousands of years. 2000 year old Kamasutra of Vatsyayana lists this science as one of the 64 arts. The proof for it lies in the Valmiki Ramayana and Mahabharata. Whenever they describe a heroic type of man the poets will use the Sanskrit words Aajaanu Baahu; the meaning is one who is blessed with long arms which touch one’s knees.    Rama is described Aaajaanu Baahu by Valmiki. Tamils also followed it in Kambaramayana and other books. If we look at the scientific background, before weapons made of iron were made men were using bow and arrow. Naturally if a man who practises archery more ,  his arms grow longer and longer generation after generation. It can be interpreted from another angle as well. One who has longer arms will easily excel in shooting arrows; naturally he becomes a hero.

In Tamil Thiruvilaiyadal Purana we have more information about excellent body parts.

What is Thiruvilaiyadal Purana?

It is a Tamil book written by atleast 300 years ago by Paranjothi Munivar. It tells us the story of Lord Shiva’s miracles in Madurai, the temple town of Tamil Nadu. Most famous Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple is located in Madurai and the 64  leelas/ playings of Lord Siva are in this Purana. They are enacted even today as temple festivals in Madurai. There is an earlier book with the same name written by Perumpatrappuliyurar. Both deal with the same subject

In the chapter about Ukkira Kumara Pandya, there is a good description of commendable or admirable body features. Ukkira kumara was the son of Somasundara Pandya (Lord of Madurai temple). He is said to have 32

Exceptional body features  (Samudrika Lakshana).

One will become an Indra (like Vedic hero Indra) if the following 6 body parts are prominent: stomach, shoulder, forehead, nose,  chest, palm.

Following 5 parts should be longer: eyes, head, hand, nose, chest.

Life span will increase if the following 5 parts are smaller: hair, body, finger nodes, nail, tooth.

Wealth will increase if the following 4 parts are narrower: tongue, back, ankle, genital part

More pleasure will be obtained if the following 7 parts are reddish: sole, palm, eyes, lips, palate, tongue, nail.

It will be good if head and forehead are  broad.

If belly button, ikalvali (meaning is not found for this Tamil word) and Voice are deeper that person will be in the forefront.
