ஆயிரம் பொன்மொழிகள்! (1-20)

ச. நாகராஜன்

அறிஞர்களின் பொன்மொழிகள், அறநூல்களின் வழிகாட்டுதல்கள் நமக்கு இன்றியமையாத ஒன்று.

இதோ சில பொன்மொழிகள்! (From my  1962 collection!)

1.       Man – Work

What we want to see is one who can breast into the world, do a man’s work, and still preserve his first and pure enjoyment of existence.                        – R.L. Stevenson

Man

Rejoice that man is hurled

   From change to change unceasingly,

His soul’s wings never furled.                                             – Browning

Men

If there exist men whose ridiculous side has never been seen it is because it has never been properly looked for.                                                             – La Rochefoucauld

Man

A man throweth himself down whilst he complaineth; and when a man throweth himself down, nobody careth to take him up again.                               – Halifax

Men – Learning

Men are either learned or learning; The rest are blockheads.    – Mohammed

Good Man

A good manis the best friend, and therefore soonest to be chosen, longer to be retained; and indeed, never to be parted with.                                                    – Geremy Taylor

God – Men

Just are the ways of God, and justifiable to men.                           – Milton

God

If we find but one to whom we can speak out our heart freely, with whom we can walk in love and simplicity without dissimulation, we have no ground to quarrel with the world of God.

–          R.L. Stevenson

               God

The gods give nothing really beautiful without labour and diligence.       – Xenophon

            10.  God

God hath said, “I am Truth.” He has never said, “I am what you have been accustomed to

                   believe.”                                                                                     – Abelard

     God

Who falls for the love of God, shall rise a star.                      – Ben Jonson

     Time

There is nothing of which we are apt to be so lavish as of Time, and about which we ought to be

more solicitous; since without it we can do nothing in this World.     – William Penn

             Time

To hold the same views at forty as we hold at twenty is to have been stupefied for a score of

years, and take rank, nor as a prophet, but as an unteachable brat, well birched and none the

              wiser.                                                                                                    – R. L. Stevenson

              Time

As the flowing rivers never turn back or stay, so days and nights bear human lives away.

                   பேசும் அளவு மனிதனே; தெய்வமே

       பேசா மவுனம் பெறின்.  – உலக உள்ளங்கள் (164) –

                                      ஜெகவீரபாண்டியனார்
